    By NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: I have grown a

    exas mountain laurel from

seed I planted six or sev-

en years ago. Its now large

enough to flower, and Ive en-

    oyed its spring blooms. How-

ever, as you can see in the pho-

to, some of the flower stalks

    are widened and stretched

out at their bases. A local

    nursery told me my sample

    couldnt be from a mountain

    laurel. What is the problem,

and what should I do with

    my plant?

This is called fasciation, and its the abnormalitywhere stem and flower tis-

sues develop two-dimension-ally. The best-known example

is the annual flower calledcockscomb, although youll

see many types of cacti andsucculents that mutate intothis type of growth. It alters

the plants rates of growth, and it changes their appear-

ance. But it doesnt reallyhurt them. You can usually

prune out the fasciated tis-sues, and the plant will con-tinue with normal growth

    and flowers.

Dear Neil: I have threecrape myrtles within 10 feet

of the foundation of my house.

    Will they hurt the foundation?

Two are 25-foot trees, and the

    other is the shorter variety

    coma.

At those distances, theypose no threat at all to the

foundation. Keep thempruned away from the edge

of the roof. They could rub

    through shingles and siding.

Dear Neil: How do you get

    rid of nematodes?

You may have to learn todeal with nematodes, insteadof expecting to eliminate

them. Your best courses of ac-tion include planting Elbon

cereal rye in early October.Let it grow through most of

the winter, before you plowit under. The rye entraps themicroscopic worms within its

root system, so the popula-tion will be greatly reduced.

Plant cool-season vegetablesinto infested areas. They are

much less likely to sufferdamage than their late springand summer counterparts.

    Choose resistant varietieswhenever theyre offered.

    Dear Neil: I remember you

    mentioning a product you

    could install behind retaining

    walls to prevent the intrusion

of tree roots. I cant find that

    note. What is it again?

Use heavy vinyl pondliner from a water garden

and pond supply dealer. Itsreadily available and easilyworked into such settings.

Dear Neil: What can I use

    to eliminate crabgrass from

    my St. Augustine lawn with-

    out harming the St. Augus-

    tine?

    Im going to assume you

truly have crabgrass andnot dallisgrass or some oth-

er grassy weed. Crabgrassis an annual weed that can

be identified by its light- tomedium-green leaves, shortrunners and helicopter-like

seed heads. It actually issomewhat akin to St. Augus-

tine, so what kills an exist-ing crabgrass plant will also

kill St. Augustine. Your twobest tricks: take better care

of the St. Augustine, and it

should quickly overrun theweaker crabgrass. Then, if

needed, apply pre-emergentweedkiller granules in early

March and early June nextyear to stop the next seasonof its growth.

Dear Neil: I have a large,

fruit-bearing fig tree thathas many stems, almost as if

    many trees were growing to-

    gether. Some of the branches

    have started dying. In remov-

ing one stem, I noticed some-

    thing was boring through the

    center. Now, other stems have

    yellow leaves. Should I be

    spraying something?

If you actually saw a larvalinsect in the tunnel in the

center of the fig stem, thatcould be a borer of some sort

(they are not prone to them). It might also just have been

the hollowed-out pith. Its dif-ficult to give a good diagnosiswithout additional facts. You

might take samples of thepossible borers to a Master

Certified Nursery Profession-al at a member of the Texas

Nursery and Landscape As-sociation. Take photos of theplant in, too. Its probably just

a large shrub with multiplebranches that play the parts

of trunks. It may be that theinternal stems are getting

pinched by the competition, much as happens with Brad-ford pear trunks.

Dear Neil: I have an un-

known species of pine tree ata house. Its about 30 feet tall,

and until about two years ago,

it was healthy. Now its yellow.

Ive used 24 tree stakes, iron

    and moderate watering. Its

a little better, but still strug-

    gling. What should I do?

    Not knowing specifically

what kind of pine you have, and not knowing where spe-

    cifically its growing, its diffi-

cult to give you a good answer. However, it certainly sounds

like an East Texas slash orloblolly pine thats having a

tough time of it in some othertype of soil, probably alka-line. If thats the case, you are

indeed seeing iron deficiency.Ive made it my policy, howev-

er, for the past 25 years, notto offer too much encourage-

ment on this issue. If youregrowing a water oak, Ameri-can holly, slash or loblolly

pine or other acid-soil-lovingtree in alkaline soil, you need

to cut your losses and replacethe tree with a better spe-

cies. Adding iron only solvesthe current problem, and itwill only get worse as long as

you have the tree. Ive seen ithappen thousands of times,

and I have yet to see a suc-cessful turnaround.

    !

    Have a question youd like

Neil to consider? Mail it to

him in care of the Wise Coun-

    ty Messenger, P.O. Box 149,

    Decatur, TX 76234 or e-mail

    him at mailbag@sperrygar-

    cannot reply to questions in-

    dividually.

    SAVVY SENIORBy JIM MILLER

Dear Savvy Senior,Where can grandparents raising grandchildren find help?

y two grandkids are about to move in with me indefinitely,

and Im looking to find out what resources are available that

    can help us.

    Grappling Grandma

    Dear Grandma,

You definitely have plenty of company on this issue. Acrossthe United States, more than 2.4 million grandparents are

raising their grandchildren, as the parents struggle with avariety of serious problems such as drug or alcohol addic-

tion, financial hardship, mental illness, prison time, domes-tic violence, divorce and more.

While there are many financial, legal and even emotional

issues to think about when you begin to raise a grandchild, youll be happy to know that help is available. Here are

some tips and resources along with supportive services tocheck into:

    Support groups

Even if its not your thing, support groups for grandpar-ents raising grandchildren are fantastic tools to connect

you with other people who understand what youre expe-riencing, not to mention it gives you a chance to learn and

share information and resources. To find local and onlinesupport groups, visit the AARP Foundation Grandparent

nformation Center at www.giclocalsupport.org where youcan do a search by city or zip code.

    Financial assistance

Raising or taking care of grandkids can be a major strainon the pocketbook, but financial assistance is available

depending on your circumstances. For starters, find outwhether your grandchild or family qualifies for Social Se-

curity (www.ssa.gov/kids/parent5.htm), your states Tempo-rary Assistance for Needy Families program (www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa) or food stamps (www.fns.usda.gov/fsp).

Also visit www.benefitscheckup.org, a comprehensive Web

resource that helps you search for additional governmentand private benefits you may be eligible for, such as supple-

mental income, lower energy bills, discounts on prescriptionmedications and more.

    Tax breaks

Grandparents who are raising children may also be eli-

gible for tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit(EITC), which is available to those with low or moderateincomes. If you make too much money to qualify for the

EITC, you may be able to apply for the Child Tax Credit. And if youre raising three or more kids, you can try for the

Additional Child Tax Credit. Also available is the Child andDependent Care Tax Credit to families who incur child care

expenditures in order to work. To learn more, visit www.irs.gov or call the IRS helpline at 800-829-1040.

    Legal status

Ask a family law attorney to help you determine whetheror not it would be beneficial for you to become your grand-

childs legal guardian. This status will allow you to makeimportant decisions for the child such as enrolling them in

school (some states require it), or giving a doctor permissionto treat them. For help finding legal advice or locating anattorney, visit www.findlegalhelp.org, a consumers guide

created by the American Bar Association that can also helpyou locate free legal services depending on your income.

    Health insurance

If you need health insurance for your grandchildren, you

can apply for free or low-cost health insurance (dependingon your income level) through your state government. Tolearn more and find out if youre eligible, go to www.insu-

rekidsnow.gov, or call 877-543-7669. You also may be able toget help through Medicaid. Also visit the National Associa-

tion of Insurance Commissioners Web site at www.insureu-online.org click on Raising Grandchildren, for tips and

information on a variety of other insurance considerations.Savvy tip

The best overall resource for grandparents raising grand-

    children is AARP (www.aarp.org/family/grandparenting),

which offers a bevy of articles and helpful information in-cluding a GrandCare tool kit.

I remember as a kid growing up inural Red River County during theate 50s and 60s, neighbors claiming

o have seen everything from blackanthers to bears. Its a good bet that

hese bear sightings were feral hogs orossibly calves or goats observed dur-

ng low light conditions. By the middlef the last century, black bears wereonexistent in East Texas, but they are

    ost definitely coming back. Thanks

    to images recordedby trail cameras

around hunterscorn feeders, weknow there is a scat-

tering of black bearsin isolated areas,

mostly young malesstriking out on their

    own from Arkansasor Louisiana.

    As recently as

June 21, there is documentation of a

bear around the corn feeder of ChrisBean from Paris. Chris said in late May

he filled his feeder with corn and set histrail camera nearby. When he returneda month or so later to check the camera,

in hopes of seeing some big bucks withheavy antlers in velvet, he was shocked

to see the image of a black bear.I did a double take when I looked

over the pictures from the camera. Iexpected to see deer and hogs but cer-

4 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, July 23, 2009

    tainly not what appeared to

    be an almost grown black

    bear! Bean said.

    Timmy Romine, who man-

    ages the hunting on the

    Circle T Bowhunting Ranch

    near Commerce, has a hunt-

    ing lease in northern Red

    iver County. Year before

last, he was checking histrail camera, also set beside

his corn feeder, and the head

of a big black bear was cap-

    tured on film.

    I showed the picture to

everyone I knew, and a few

    weeks later another hunt-

    er captured the image of

    a standing bear beside his

feeder. We did not see the

bear, or signs of him, last

    hunting season but its a

good bet where there is one

    bear, there should be more,

    said Romine.

    Texas Parks and Wildlife

    biologist Regan White said

    NA samples from one of

the bears identifies it as be-

    ing a sub-adult male stand-

ing about 30 inches high at

    the shoulders, bding 5 feet,

    4 inches tall and weighing

    more than 200 pounds.

    I am busy attempting to

    get a hair sample around

    eans corn feeder, White

    said. With a DNA sample

taken from the hair, we can

determine if the bear is of

    the Louisiana sub species of

    black bear, obviously from

    ouisiana, or an American

    lack Bear that has moved

down from Arkansas or pos-sibly southeast Oklahoma.

    Several years ago, the

    ouisiana subspecies of

black bear was stocked in an

    area in central Louisiana, in

    hopes of establishing a sus-

    taining population. Female

    bears with small cubs were

    released because the biolo-

gists hoped that since the ba-

bies were too small to travel,

    the mothers would remain in

    the area. This stocking went

    well, and a thriving popula-

    tion of bears was established

in that section of the state.

    According to White, male

black bears appear to be rov-

ers that have the habit of

    leaving the area where they

were raised and seeking out a

home area of their own, usu-

    ally just before breeding age.

This appears to be the case

    with the isolated bear sight-

    ing in Red River County.

    Chances appear to be pret-

ty good that, because of the

    relatively close proximity to

    Arkansas where there is a

    well established black bear

    population, the bears caught

    on camera in Red River

    County probably crossed the

    Red River and found cover

and food to their liking inthe woodlands of northeast

    Texas.

If all goes well and the

    bears manage to once again

    reclaim their previously

    occupied areas in eastern

Texas, we will one day have

    a huntable number. Their

    numbers certainly bounded

    back in Arkansas and parts

    of Louisiana, thanks to good

    management practices and

    cooperation between the

    state wildlife agencies and

    private landowners.

The huge success of the re-

    stocking of the eastern wild

    turkey in East Texas comes

    to mind. If good management

    practices can restore these

    birds to their native woods

    and fields, surely an animal

as hardy as a black bear can

    be re-introduced. But, at

    present, there is no restock-

ing of bears in Texas and in

    the foreseeable future, no

    plans to begin a restocking

    program. Hopefully, more of

these male bears will take a

liking to the Lone Star State,

and just maybe a few of their

    girlfriends will tag along on

    the voyage across the mighty

Red River. One thing is for

sure, well have our trailcameras running to capture

    their arrival on film.

    Outdoor tip

    of the week

    Crappie have moved out of

    the shallows into deep water,

    and savvy fishermen are us-

    ing submerged brush piles to

    concentrate them. Willows

    make excellent crappie at-

    tractors, but only when an-

    chored firmly with weights

    such as concrete blocks.

    Plastic gallon jugs tied se-

curely to the tops of the wil-

lows ensure they remain in a

    vertical position, once placed

in the water. Make sure and

    check the local regulations

on the body of water you fish

    about creating these crap-

    pie attractors. Ive recently

set a couple of these crappie

    magnets on some private wa-

ters I fish, which is relatively

    barren of structure. It seems

every crappie in the lake has

    been attracted to the baitfish

    that seek shelter around the

    leaves and branches.

    Many of us have expe-

    rienced the unpleasantconsequences caused by

spoiled food in a refrigera-tor or freezer after a powerfailure.

Jenna Anding, a food andnutrition expert with the

Texas AgriLife ExtensionService, offers these sug-

gestions for eliminating re-frigerator odors:! Unplug the appliance

and remove all spoiled food.f you are not sure whether

or not the food is spoiled, throw it out anyway.! Remove shelves, crisp-

ers, bins and ice trays andwash thoroughly with hot

water and dish detergent.Afterwards, rinse the unit

with a sanitizing solutionmade by mixing 1 teaspoon

    of chlorine bleach per quart

of water.! Wash the inside of the

refrigerator with hot waterand baking soda then rinse

    with the sanitizing solu-tion.

Leave the refrig-erator or freezerdoor open for at

least 15 minutesso air can circulate

    freely.If the odors are

strong, you mayneed to leave theunit open longer.

If odors remain, you can try one or

all of the follow-ing:! Wipe the inside out

with a solution made ofequal parts water and vin-

egar. Leave the door openfor several days so it can

    air out.! Stuff the refrigerator

    and/or freezer with rolled

newspapers. Close the doorand leave it alone for sev-

eral days. Then, remove thepaper and clean with a so-

lution of vinegar and water.! Use materials

that absorb mois-ture and odors. These materials

    include activatedcharcoal, bak-

    ing soda, or freshground coffee.

Place the mate-rial in a shallowpan in the bottom

of the unit and letthe refrigerator

run for a few daysuntil the odors disappear.

If the odor gets into thefreezers insulation, con-tact the manufacturer for

    suggestions on solving the

    problem.However, at that point,

there may not be anythingone can do to eliminate the

    odor.Thats when you have to

consider more unpleasant-ness the purchase of a newappliance.

If the refrigerator orfreezer needs to be thrown

out, be sure to do it in a safemanner. Childproof the

unit so children cannot gettrapped inside.

This can be done by tak-

ing the doors off, lockingthem shut with a padlock

or removing the latch com-pletely so the door wont

lock if it is closed. For more information, call

Fetal monitoring refers to checking the babys heart rate, usually

during labor and delivery, utilizing a variety of possible means. Doing

so enables doctors to monitor stress indicators, as fetal heart rate may

change in response to conditions in the uterus. An abnormal heart rate

pattern may indicate that the baby is not getting enough oxygen or

other problems. Among the non-invasive tools used for this purpose

are a fetoscope, a hand-held Doppler device, external electronic fetal

monitoring, and internal fetal monitoring. The choice of monitoring

instrument is largely dependent on a womans particular circumstances

and choice of labor management. Women with high-risk pregnancies, or

who are induced or choose epidural anesthesia, are more likely to have

    continuous fetal monitoring.

A womans pregnancy is one of the most important times in her life. We

understand that not all pregnancies are alike and provide personalized,

up to date care. When you require obstetrical care or would like more

information about todays column call WISE OBSTETRICS &

GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our office is conveniently

located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are

    welcome.

P.S. Internal fetal monitoring is used when it is necessary to obtain a

more accurate reading of fetal heart rate.
