    Dear Neil: My favorite

erson gave me a pot of tu-

    lips for Valentines Day. They

    are through blooming now,

and Id like to put them out

    in my yard. What location

would be best so that they

    can flourish forever?

Im going to give you twoanswers. First, plant them

where drainage will be per-fect during wet seasons, andlocate them so that their

soil will be shaded duringthe afternoons in the sum-

mer. However, (second an-swer), tulips are not espe-

cially well adapted to ourTexas climate. Potted tulipshave been forced to come

into flower under carefullycontrolled conditions. Hope-

fully your bulbs will estab-lish and do well, but thats

a rare occurrence here. Goodluck with them!

    Dear Neil: I read your

    uggestion of using Cana-

ian peat moss on my lawn

or Take All Root Rot. Where

    can it be bought?

Sphagnum peat moss isavailable in bales throughnurseries and garden cen-

ters. Some have it for salemost of the year, but if they

dont have it, they can orderit for you. The reason I spec-

ify Canadian peat mosswhen I write is because it

is far superior to domesticpeat. The Canadian productis much more active as a soil

amendment, while Ameri-can hypnum peat is inert

and virtually ineffective insoil improvement, also as aremedy for TARR. The Tex-

as A&M research, for thosewho didnt see the earlier in-

formation, suggests a 1-inchlayer of peat be applied in

the spring if the TARR fun-gus is present in St. Augus-tine turf. They report that

all brands of the Canadianpeat will work equally well.

    Dear Neil: Our Texas

    summers are both long and

hot. We have a new sprinkler

system, and we need the ba-

sic advice of when it should

run, and for how long per

    station.

    Early morning hours be-

fore daybreak are definitelythe best time to water, butas to the length of time each

station runs, thats a farmore difficult issue. It de-

pends on temperature, hu-midity, wind, soil type, slope,

    plants being grown and, of

course, recent rainfall. Youwant all of your plants todry out at the same time, so

you will find that each sta-tion will need its own specif-

ic run-time. One station (ashade bed with spray heads,

for example) may only needa few minutes, while an-

other (with impact heads orwith drippers) may take sev-eral times that long. Many

cities now require that newsprinkler installations have

a smart controller thatmeters all the factors beforeallowing the system to run.

Even if you dont have oneof these evapo-transpiration

(e.t.) controllers, it wouldbe a great addition. It will

probably pay for itself in just a year or two throughwater savings, and thats a

great thing for us all. Other-wise, I really would suggest

you leave your system in themanual mode, and turn it

on only when your plantsand their soils begin to dry.

    Dear Neil: Im seeing

    apple, peach and other fruit

trees at some of the local

    chain box stores. Will those

    grow well here?

Those are two of the morelabor-intensive fruit crops

for Texas, but both can begrown here. Start with an

adapted variety of any fruitcrop that you try. Odds are

that it will be a different

selection than youll find atnational stores. Texas A&Mhas fruit variety recommen-

dations for all areas of Texasonline. Stick with the advice

of the experts who know lo-cal conditions. Many inde-

pendent retail garden cen-ters buy carefully to have

the best types for local gar-dens.

Dear Neil: I have an area

    of approximately 500 square

feet that has three tall fruit

trees and no grass. What type

of grass will grow best there,

and can it be grown from

sod? I prefer the quick cover

I get from sod. The area has

    shade in the summer and

    full sun in the winter.

St. Augustine is the onlyshade-tolerant grass that

is planted from sod, but youneed to be sure that the

area will receive at leastfour hours of direct sunlight

daily in the summer (fullsunlight in winter isnt es-pecially helpful), or it wont

succeed. Three large fruittrees in only 500 square feet

sounds like a lot of shade. You may have to consider

either removing one or twoof the trees, or going to ashade-proof groundcover

such as mondograss (not atrue grass), Asian jasmine

    or purple wintercreeper eu-onymus.

    !

    Have a question youd

    like Neil to consider? Mail

it to him in care of the Wise

    County Messenger, P.O. Box

    149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-

    mail him at mailbag@sper-

that he cannot reply to ques-

    tions individually.

Long-term studies ofthousands of men and

women since 1949 haveproduced a consistent find-ing; overweight Americans

have more heart disease, high blood pressure, diabe-

tes and certain types of can-cer. Being inactive, having

too much fat in the abdomi-

nal area and having a fam-

ily history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabe-

tes and cancer, all seem toadd to the risks associated

with obesity. The health risks of being

    overweight are well docu-

mented. Many people aretold every year by their

health professionals to loseweight. Few people actually

    lose weight, and even fewer

    maintain their weight loss.

Is losing and gaining moredangerous than just stay-

ing obese? Does ones abil-ity to burn calories just get

slower and slower with eachtry? Is trying one more timeworth the trouble?

First, losing excess weightimproves health. Even a

loss of 10 pounds can lowerblood pressure and blood

    sugar levels. A 12-year

ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 5, 2009 3

    CLAYTONS CORNER

By GARY CLAYTONWise Co. Extension Agent

Following a few simple, clear-cut rules when stocking

ponds can result in larger, healthier fish and better fishing.Diverge from these rules and youre likely to wind up with

a pond populated with stunted game fish, trashsh or both, said Michael Masser, Extension fish-

ries specialist. The rules and guidelines differ according to the

size of the pond or lake, the type of fishing desiredand how much work the pond owner wants tospend managing it, he said. It also depends upon

ow often and aggressively the pond owner planso fish the pond.

First: If the pond is smaller than one acre, thinkwice about stocking it with largemouth bass.argemouth bass are the most popular game fish

n Texas, but theyre not vegetarians. They feed onther fish, and like wolves or other predatory ani-

als, need a large territory within which to feed.Ponds smaller than one surface acre are difficult to man-

age for largemouth bass and should be stocked with catfish, asser said. Ponds larger than one surface acre are good

andidates for stocking largemouth bass and bluegill.

Ponds less than one acre in surface area, even if well-anaged, are unlikely to support more than a couple of

arge largemouth bass. More likely, with fierce competitionor available food fish, usually bluegill, the result will be

argemouth bass runts, he said. Another general guideline depends upon whether thewner is prepared to regularly fertilize the pond. Fertiliza-

ion can boost the natural food chain and allow a largerumber of fish to be taken from the pond yearly.

And the third guideline depends upon how hard and of-en the owner plans to fish the pond. The most common

ismanagement scenario, Masser said, is stocking a pond, hen not removing enough fish every year. The result is anverabundance of small fish and few keepers. Removing

sh from a pond is essential in managing the pond for goodshing because of growth and reproduction, he said.

Heres how these guidelines apply to a catfish pond:If the owner does not plan to regularly fertilize the pond

r feed a catfish ration, only 50 to 100 catfish per acre shoulde stocked.

If it is to be fertilized, 100 to 200 catfish should be stockeder acre. If feeding is to be done once or twice a week, 350sh per acre can be stocked. And if a commercial catfish

eed is fed five or six days per week, 1,000 fish per acre cane stocked.

In ponds stocked below 350 catfish per acre, it is goodo stock fathead minnows (not shiners) into the ponds at

a rate of 5 to 10 ponds per acre, Masser said Fatheads

are slow swimmers and can be easily preyed upon by theatfish.

With all four catfish management scenarios, about halfhe number of the fish stocked should be harvested each

    ear, he noted.

Stocking 500 catfish per acre and feeding them almost

every day means that about 250 need to be fished out af-ter they reach 1 pound about one year after stocking,he said. Otherwise, the pond becomes overcrowded with

fish, and disease and water quality problems will cause fishkills. Catfish will usually reproduce in ponds in the absence

of predators such as bass, so fishing is also key tokeeping the population under control.

Masser recommended stocking bluegill and basstogether when renovating ponds.

There is no better prey for bass in ponds thanbluegills, he said. This has been established byscientific research.

As with other species, stocking rates for bass de-pend upon how the pond is to be managed. With

no fertilization, Masser recommended a limit of 50bass and 500 bluegill per acre. With a good fer-tilization program or daily feeding of the bluegill

using a commercial feed, the stocking rates can bedoubled - 100 bass and 1,000 bluegill per acre.

The bass will not eat the (commercial) feed, he said. These fish will reproduce in the pond and future stocking

should not be needed.Other fish can be stocked with the bass and bluegill, in-

cluding redear sunfish also called shell crackers fat-

head minnows and catfish. When stocking redear sunfish, stock only 20 percent as

many as the bluegill and reduce the bluegill stocking num-bers proportionally, Masser said. For example, if stocking

redear is desired, then stock 100 redear and only 400 blue-gill per acre in unfertilized ponds.

The recommended stocking rate for fatheads in a bass/

bluegill pond is 10 to 20 pounds per acre. The recommendedrate for catfish is 50 up to 200 per acre, depending on fertil-

ization and feeding.Catfish will not be able to successfully reproduce in most

bass and bluegill ponds, so they have to be restocked peri-odically as they are fished out, he said. it is best to stockponds with fingerling sunfish and catfish in the fall, winter

or early spring. It is best to stock fingerling bass in the latespring.

Masser said that crappie, hybrid sunfish, shiner min-nows, carp and flathead catfish should not be stocked in

    bass/bluegill ponds.

These species compete or prey upon the bluegill andbass causing population problems in ponds, he said. Theseclear-cut and simple pond stocking recommendations es-

tablish species known to coexist and establish a strong non-competing predator-prey food chain. The result is a pond

with larger and healthier fish and better fishing. For more information on pond stocking and management,

    rington, Cody Hixon andZach Caldwell.

    The black division tested

    competencies in algebra,geometry, trigonometry and

calculus.Individually, Price andixon placed fifth and ninth

in the top 10 individual re-sults in the black division.

    Other teams participat-ing included Weatherford,

Weatherford Christian,Trinity Christian, Stephen-ville, Huckabay, Mineral

    Wells and Godley.

obesity-related diseases such as heartdisease, diabetes, high blood pressureand cancer had a 20 percent reduced

death rate when they intentionallylost weight.

This reduction in death rate wasmostly due to a 40 to 50 percent de-

crease in obesity-related cancers suchas those of the breast, uterus and cer-

vix, as well as a 30 to 40 percent de-crease in diabetes-related death.

    Second, repeated weight loss at-

tempts do not permanently changeones metabolism, making weight loss

harder each time.Metabolism is the amount of energy

your body uses to maintain its func-

tions. Metabolism does go down withage, so a person who is 50 years old

    needs less calories

    than a 20-year-old.In addition to

    lowering the num-

    ber of calorieseaten each day,

    another way tomaintain weight

is to increase youramount of muscle

    with increasedphysical activitieslike walking and

weight training. Muscles use more en-ergy than fat. Engaging in an activity

like brisk walking for 30 to 45 min-utes also boosts metabolism.

So, is trying one more time worth

the trouble? The answer is clearlyyes.

If you want to have company los-

ing weight or increasing your activitylevel, sign up for Walk Across Texasat the Extension Office, 206 State

St., in Decatur. Walk Across Texas isan eight-week walking program for

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve.

In its early stages, glaucoma may present few or no symptoms and can gradu-ally steal sight without warning. In fact, it is estimated that half of the peopleaffected by glaucoma do not know they have it. If left undetected and untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness.

One of the major risk factors for glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP),or pressure inside the eye. A healthy eye produces fluids, called aqueous humor,at the same rate at which it drains. High pressure occurs when the drainagesystem is blocked and the fluid cannot exit at a normal rate. This increased IOPpushes against the optic nerve causing gradual damage, which may result invision loss, usually starting with the peripheral, or side vision. Increased eyepressure is often associated with gradual damage to the nerve fibers that makeup the optic nerve. Family history of glaucoma, age, race, and diabetes are allcontributing risk factors for developing this silent eye disease.

    BUSINESS

    By DENNY DEADY

What began as a birth-day gift from his wife hasgrown into a cottage indus-try for Doug Dunlap of Lake

    ridgeport.Cheri Dunlap went in

search of a 60th birthdaygift for her husband, wholoves to cook and is good atit. While looking for a stan-dard barbecue grill, she cameacross the Big Green Egg, aceramic appliance that is

fashioned after the Japen-ese kamado. It is billed asthe worlds best smoker andgrill. Something that couldgrill and smoke was exactlywhat Doug wanted.

There are many accesso-ries available for the darkgreen, egg-shaped cooker, including an egg crate, astand to hold the Egg. But

oug wanted somethingmore substantial, some-thing that would raise theegg to a convenient heightfor cooking and somethingwith room for his utensils. So he headed for his work-

shop, where the sign by thedoor reads, The Doug-Out,

o Gurlz Allowed. There hedesigned and built a 5-foottable for his Egg, the first of

any he would build.I have been interested inoodworking all my life,

said Dunlap. He got serious about the

raft in 1998 when he andheri moved to Lake Bridge-ort and gutted their home, otally remodeling it, withelp. They volunteered withabitat for Humanity inississippi, following Hur-

icane Katrina, and closero home, they helped withhe local Habitat house inridgeport.Doug and Cheri have also

artnered on a home remod-ling project at the lake, andoug is often called on byeighbors for help with theirrojects. What began as a project

o meet his individual needsas grown into a business.oug has built Egg tables

or a high-end barbecue ac-essories store as well as forndividuals.

    He begins each Egg table

y allowing the lumber toure at least three weeks.

He uses 2X6 lumber that hehas run through his planer. He glues the pieces togetherand sands the top and lowershelf. The table is put to-gether with 2-inch, 14-gaugesquare steel tubing, and hedoes all his own welding.

Its going to last as long asthe Egg, he said confidently.

    He finishes each table with

a minimum of three coats ofspar urethane, hand sandingbetween coats. The bottomshelf is finished to perfec-tion, just like the top of thetable.

Dunlap has stock plansfor various tables for thelarger versions of the Egg,but he also builds tables tocustomers specifications. Herecently completed a tablefor an Egg owner in the HillCountry who wanted a tablewith two different heightsand cabinet doors. The steelcan be painted to the cus-tomers specifications.

The former mayor of LakeBridgeport has cooked bris-

ket, ribs, chicken, turkey, meatloaf, burgers, pizza andmuch more on his Egg andis sold on the quality of theitems he cooks. Because ofthe baffle between the grateand the charcoal, the meatdoesnt come in direct con-tact with the flames. The re-sult is a very moist meat.

    Breakfast can even be pre-

pared in an Egg, and Cherisays she is anxious to trybaking a cake in it.

The Egg will cook every-thing from biscuits to bris-kets, according to Doug.

The Dunlaps look forwardto getting more involvedwith other Egg owners.

Its kind of like a cult,Doug said with a laugh. There are egg fests, whereeggheads get together anddemonstrate their skills, similar to barbecue coo-koffs.

To see Dougs tables, visithis Web site at www.MrD-

Stuff.com. He can be emailedat [email protected].

HATCHED AN IDEA Doug Dunlap of Lake Bridgeport designsand builds custom tables for The Big Green Egg, a ceramiccooker that smokes and grills. Dunlap has built the tables fora high-end barbecue accessories store in the Metroplex aswell as for individuals.

will be, awakened in the night by a

    child with wet pajamas. Nocturnal

    enuresis, or bedwetting, is fairly

common in young children. If a child

is still habitually wetting the bed past

age six, however, it may be time for

    help. A pediatrician can prescribe

    medication to control enuresis, but

    there are measures parents can

take before going the medical route.

    Establish an evening routine with

a beverage cutoff time and several

    bathroom visits before bed. Reward

dry mornings with special treats. Wet

    pajamas can be quite embarrassing,

so try not to scold a child about bed

wetting or bring it up around other

    people. If preventative measures

    dont work, consult a pediatrician.

    If your child suffers from

    uncontrolled enuresis, please come

    to LOVETTE PEDIATRICS. As with

    any serious situation, our highly

trained and caring specialist at 2014
