    G ARDENER S M AILBAG

    BY NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil : I planted threeruit trees two years ago.

They are alive, but theyrenot growing very well. Some-one told me its because I didnot make a hole big enough, and that I need to lift themup and replant them intobetter holes. Others say I justneed to fertilize them better.Where would you weigh in?

Probably more with thelatter. Trees have extensiveroot systems as they growand mature, so it reallydoesnt matter how big the

planting hole is. I buy treesthat are adapted to my area, then I dig the planting holelarge enough to accommo-date the root systems andthats about all. The mostcommon reasons for stall-out after fruit trees areplanted are that people buybare-rooted or balled-and-burlapped trees that are toolarge (suffer extensive rootloss from which they cannotrecover), or that they fail toprune dug trees back at thetime of planting to compen-sate for the roots that werelost. Any trees, even thoseplanted from containers, can stall when they dontget enough fertilizer, or,

    more likely, water at criticaltimes.

Dear Neil : I have redtip photinias that are 5 feet tall. Id like to cut them to 3 feet. I really dont like them andwould like to replace them, but now am wondering howmuch I can cut them.

Redtips, left unpruned, would grow to 15 to 20feet tall. They are amongour very tallest landscapeshrubs. Youre trying to keepthem way too short. Votehere: replace them. Yournurseryman can suggestmany options.

Dear Neil : We are dis-satised with our 609 buf-

falograss and would like toreplace it. Its in full sun. Onone side our neighbor has St.

Augustine. We have replacedsmall areas of the 609 al-ready with zoysia and have

been satised. What wouldbe best for the rest of thelawn?

If you like the zoysia, itwould be ne. Bermudag-rass is the best trade-outfor buffalograss since it isequally drought-tolerant. Italso is the dominant grass of the two. You could use herbi-cides should your neighborsSt. Augustine invade bermu-da. You cannot do that withzoysia. Other than that, ei-ther choice would be ne.

Dear Neil : I have 30- year-old burford hollies that I have trimmed at 5 feettall and 3 feet wide. Theyrein a shaded area. Some of

the branches have becomesparse and open. Id like to

prune them back to rejuve-nate them. When should I doit, and by how much?

That kind of pruningwould be done in earlyFebruary, before the newspring growth. Remove thedead branches with lop-ping shears, then carefullysculpt what is left with handshears. Do consider, how-ever, how many years youvegotten from them. Maybe itstime for something new.

Dear Neil : Is there anytype of weedkiller I can useto keep sprouts from comingup beneath my live oak?

No. Theyre tethered to themother tree and you wouldend up hurting it. Theres

just not a good solutionother than slicing them outwith a sharpshooter spadeevery few months. Covering

them with a root/shoot bar-rier such as vinyl pond linerwould help, but you cantplant through it.

Dear Neil : We have hada Japanese yew for 30 years. This past year it bore fruitthat looked like an oblong

plum with a round, greenseed on the end. It tasted likea plum with a corn cob core.

Have you seen this before?Thats the fruit of the

false Japanese yew (Podo-carpus). Be more careful inyour sampling. This one is

in no way related to plumsand may even cause irrita-tion if consumed. Its not tobe eaten.

Dear Neil : Is it too lateto plant wildower seeds forspring bloom?

Many Texas wildowersgerminate with early fallsrains, then establish deeproots over the winter. Blue-bonnet plants, for example, are already well establishedon Texas hillsides. Otherwildowers such as gaillar-dias (Indian blanket) dontsurvive freezing weather. They are awaiting warmweather before they sproutand start to grow. It all de-pends on which owers youwant.

Dear Neil : What will kill goatheads?

If youre talking about thesprawling weed with fern-

like leaves (as opposed tograss burs), use a pre-emer-gent product called Galleryin early March and again inearly June. Or, use a broad-leafed weedkiller spray onceyou see the weeds.

Have a question youdlike Neil to consider? Mailit to him in care of the WiseCounty Messenger, P.O. Box149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Neil regretsthat he cannot reply to ques-tions individually.

AGvantage & North Texas Bank: A Relationship Built on Trust

Twelve years ago, Dean andBarbara Hancock relied on WiseCounty bankers Don Robinson and

    Andrew Rottner to nance their

purchase of Cocanougher Feed,a 60-year-old Decatur institutionthat concentrated on supplyingquality feed.

That relationship continuedas the Hancocks transformed thecompany into AGvantage, a full-service farm-and-ranch store sup-plying the essentials of feed, seedand fertilizer along with an ever-expanding list of products relatedto agriculture.

Now that banking relation-ship is providing the backing theyneed as they move AGvantage intoits new home, a 27,000-square-footfacility on nine acres just north of Decatur on US 81/287.

This facility is designed speci-cally for our use. For once, we wontbe in a converted Chevy dealer-ship, Dean Hancock jokingly said.

Dean fully recognizes theimportance of a solid banking rela-tionship for any business.

We were involved with bothDon and Andrew when the oppor-tunity came to buy the business

    from the Cocanougher family,Dean said.

We were grateful that whenit came time to evaluate nanc-

ing opportunities for this project,North Texas Bank made availableto us the most attractive interimand long-term nancing for ourproject, he noted.

North Texas Bank president Andrew Rottner appreciates beinginvited to be a part of AGvantagescontinued growth.

We have had an extensivebanking relationship with Deanand Barbara and their businessdating back to First National Bankof Texas days, he said.

The Hancocks understood the Wise County markets poten-tial long before they bought Coca-nougher. For 20 years they raisedRegistered Angus near Decatur.

AGvantage had long ago out-grown its present Decatur location, which it turns out was needed byshopping-center developer The Re-tail Connection.

The functional new facility will double AGvantages retailspace and include a hay barn and acenter for trailer sales and service,

which Dean describes as a realgrowth area for us.

Were grateful CocanougherFeed provided us with a rm base,

Dean said. What we offer is sig-nicantly more than the businesswe bought 12 years ago.

Well stock everything fromclothing to gift items and be afull-line store for hobbyists whilewe continue to meet the needs of farmers, ranchers and horse own-ers, he said.

Keeping the rms expansionon track will be its manager, WadeWatson, who has been with AGvan-tage eight years. Wade is the keyto all of this, Dean pointed out.

Sons Cary and Kelly Hancockand son-in-law Cory Priest also areinvolved with AGvantage.

For growing businesses of all types, North Texas Bank offersa turnkey product for constructionand permanent nancing of com-mercial real estate.

We offer competitive termswith outstanding service, An-drew Rottner pointed out. Were

very responsive in closing transac-tions in order to get our customersmoving on their projects.

No matter how terric your boss, there are going to be times whenyou will have disagreements ordifferences of opinion. This can bean awkward situation, since youknow whos in charge, but yet youstill feel stressed, and maybe up-set about your reactions.

Since you know workplace dis-agreements will happen, whatyou want is a logical process thatwill get you through such situa-tions without feeling stressed, butrather feeling good about how you

conducted yourself.Start by evaluating how impor-

tant the disagreement really is. Weoften respond emotionally whentheres a disagreement, then ndweve made a mountain out of amolehill. If the problem really doesmatter, decide whether to deal withit now or later. Theres no rightanswer. Sometimes trying to dealwith a disagreement immediatelycan make you seem argumenta-tive, while at other times, waitingto voice your objections may meanyoure acting too late, or are set-ting up bigger problems. When toact is a decision to make based on

a careful evaluation of the problemand its implications.

Your next step should be to con-sider alternative courses of action. There is almost always more thanone way to confront a problem. What you want to do is actuallythink through those alternativesand try to evaluate which onewould actually be the best way toproceed.

When you have what you feelis the best alternative, then takeaction. At this point, the actionyoure taking is not just a heated, emotional response, but ratherbased on careful and clear evalu-

ation of the problem and possiblesolutions.

A nal step is to evaluate theoutcome. You may not have beenable to change the decision or ac-tion that led to the initial disagree-ment, but that isnt always yourgoal. Remember, the boss is stillthe boss and its not within yourpower to change him or her. Peopleare simply who they are.

Rather, your goal in workingthrough this disagreement is toget to the end of the situation feel-ing as good as possible about theway you handled it.

Fly off the handle and get in a

heated argument with your bossand youre never going to feel goodabout it. But react with a well-reasoned, carefully thought-outapproach, and youll end up feel-ing less stressed and much betterabout this work situation.

The following article wasritten by Dr. Bruce Car-

enter, associate professorand livestock specialist, FortStockton.

The economic value of an-nual pregnancy testing andculling of open and sub-fer-tile cows and heifers hasbeen well documented: withpositive affects on herd fer-tility, weaning weight percow and income per cow. Inaddition, the identicationand removal of open femalesallows supplemental feedand pasture costs to be bet-ter controlled. Knowing ex-pected calving dates can bean advantage when market-ing bred replacement heif-ers. Potential buyers oftenwant to purchase femaleswhose calving dates coin-cide with those of their pres-ent herd.

Rectal palpation of thefetus, and/or uterine-pla-cental structures, has beena long-practicedmethod of deter-mining pregnancyin cattle; and it willlikely continue asa popular method.Palpations advan-tages are that it isstill a very quickmethod of deter-mining pregnancyand it requires verylittle in the way of equipment. It does, however, require extensivetraining and practice, es-pecially if performed dur-ing the very early stages of pregnancy (35-60 days). Asopposed to dairymen, mostbeef ranchers utilize rectalpalpation pregnancy checksduring the fall, at weaning, when it is generally easierto detect a large fetus at 3 to6 months-of-age. Still, with

rectal palpation, errors canand do occur. The BioPRYN test is a

new method to de-termine pregnancy. It utilizes a labora-tory procedure totest tail- or jugu-lar-bled animalsfor pregnancy. It isessentially a yes/ no test and is 99percent accurate onpregnant cows andabout 95 percentaccurate on opencows. Blood collec-

tions are shipped by com-mercial carrier to a labora-tory. Results are availableby fax or e-mail within 27hours after arrival at thelab. Cost of the test is $2.25per sample plus purchase of blood collection equipmentand shipping.

BioPRYN stands forpregnant ruminant yes/no,as it has application in many

species of domestic and wildruminants. The test detectsthe presence of a proteinknown as pregnancy specif-ic protein B (PSPB) in theblood of the mother. PSPBcan be accurately detectedas early as 30 days post-con-ception (i.e. cows and heiferscan be tested as early as 30days after breeding). How-ever, cows that have calvedwill have residual PSPBin their blood. To allow forclearance time, it is recom-mended not to test lactat-ing cows until 90 days aftercalving, so practically speak-ing, a herd of multiparousbeef cows managed undera controlled calving seasonprobably wouldnt be testeduntil at least 30 days afterthe end of the breeding sea-son. With calving dates onindividual cows, it could bepossible to track and test in-dividual animals at earlier

Dear Savvy Senior , My husband and I (both inur 60s) are interested in re-odeling some areas of our

ome to make it more senior-riendly, but were not sure

what to do or who to call forhelp. Any suggestions?

Home Bound BobbieDear Bobbie,How to make a home safer

and easier to live in as youage has become a commonquestion today, as most old-er Americans want to liveout their lives in their ownhome. Here are some re-sources that can help.

    Getting StartedThere are literally dozens

of different things you can doto modify a home for aging-in-place. Modications can

range from simple, inexpen-sive do-it-yourself projects,to extensive remodeling jobsthat can cost thousands of dollars (see Home Modica-tions below). To learn moreabout senior-friendly modi-cations and universal de-sign see these resources:

National Resource Cen-ter on Supportive Hous-ing and Home Modication(www.homemods.org): Theyoffer a national directory of home modication resourc-es, information on designand products, and places tond architects and contrac-tors.

AARPs Home Designsection (www.aarp.org/fami-lies/home_design): Providesinformation and resourceson universal design and re-modeling solutions, includ-ing a checklist that helpsyou evaluate each room forsafety and long-term livabil-ity.

Hiring a ContractorIf your project requires

a professional contractoror remodeler, look for onethats a Certied Aging-In-Place Specialists (CAPS).These are professionals

that have special trainingin dealing with the specicneeds of older homeowners.See www.nahb.org/caps tolearn more or to search fora CAPS contractor in yourarea.

Savvy Tip : As with anyother type of contractor, its wise to get several bidson a job before deciding onone; be sure they have ex-perience; ask for a writtenagreement with estimates;and check them out with thelocal Better Business Bu-reau. Servicemagic.com andangieslist.com are also goodresources for researchingcontractors or handymen.

    ANGELMANS SYNDROME

Angelmans syndrome is a neurologi-cal disorder that is typically inheritedas a gene abnormality. Children arediagnosed most often between ages3 and 7 years. Seizures occur in 90%of children with Angelmans, usuallybefore age 3. A lack of motor skills, including movement or balance prob-lems, is another common symptom.Children often have a stiff, jerky gaitand struggle to walk, feed, and reachfor objects. Speech impairment alsooccurs. Children may also exhibit ab-normal behavior that can involve fre-quent laughing and smiling, unusualexcitability, and an impaired attentionspan. Because of these symptoms, children with Angelmans experiencedevelopmental delays. No cure existsfor Angelmans syndrome, but physi-cal therapy, adaptive devices, andanti-seizure medications can allevi-ate symptoms. Though a rare disorder, Angelmanssyndrome is a serious concern. Its 5:30 p.m. Whats for din-ner? Each day, millions of peo-ple are faced with this ques-tion. If no plans have beenmade, fast food and home-delivered pizzas start to lookpretty good. While eating outoccasionally is OK, mealseaten out tend to be less nu-tritious and more costly thanthose prepared at home.

A good solution for individ-uals who are time-restricted,nutrition-conscious and bud-get-minded is the slow cooker.

    r. Jenna Anding, assistantprofessor and nutrition spe-cialist with the Texas AgriL-ife Extension Service sharesways that slow cookers cando your cooking while you areaway.

In addition to preparinggreat tasting meals, a slowcooker can also help savemoney. It takes lesselectricity to use aslow cooker than anoven, and slow cook-ers are a great way toprepare inexpensive, lean cuts of meat. The moist heat gen-erated by the slowcooker makes thesecuts of meat moretender compared toother cooking meth-ods. Another feature of slowcookers is the ease of use. Forthe most part, all one has todo is place the ingredients inthe slow cooker, plug it in andturn it on.

However, if important foodsafety recommendations areignored, food prepared in a

slow cooker could cause afoodborne illness. To reducethe risk of foodborne illness,

the Food Safety andInspection Serviceoffers the followingtips for safe slowcooking:

Always startwith a clean cooker, utensils and workarea.

    Wash handsbefore and duringfood preparation.

Refrigerate per-ishable foods until prepara-tion time. You can chop meatand vegetables in advance, but they must be stored sepa-rately in covered containersin the refrigerator.

    Use only thawed meat orpoultry.

    Do not place large pieces

of meat or a whole chickenin the slow cooker. Instead, cut the meat or poultry intosmall pieces. Otherwise, thefood will cook so slowly thatit could stay in the dangerzone (for bacterial growth) toolong.

Fill the cooker between1/2 and 2/3 full. Root veg-etables such as carrots andpotatoes cook slower thanmeat or poultry so place themon the bottom, add the meat, then cover with liquid (brothor sauce).

Dont peek! Every timethe lid is removed, it can take20 minutes to regain the lostheat.

If you are not home dur-ing the entire slow-cookingprocess and the power goesout, throw out the food, evenif it looks done!

Use a food thermometerto make sure meat and poul-try dishes have reached a safeinternal temperature.

Following is a recipe for beef stew that is easily adaptablefor slow cooker preparation.

Easy Beef Stew2 pounds stew meat (Cut

meat into bite-sized pieces)1 envelope onion soup mix1 can cream of mushroom

ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, January 31, 2008 7

P ET T ALKTick, tick, tick if thats

our clock ticking, no prob-em. But if you are count-ng parasites on your pet, ouve got a big problem.Ticks are little pests that

an lead to severe health is-sues for you and your pet.

ere is what the expertsave to say about identi-ation, removal and preven-ion of ticks.

There are hundreds of species of ticks that lookompletely different. Ticksome in all shapes and siz-s and even change their

appearance throughout theifferent stages of their

    ives. When unfed, ticks are

at with either 6 or 8 legs, depending on their life stageof development. When fed, ticks look like little rubberybags, kind of like grapes.

Ticks are most common-ly found on the back of thehead or neck where cats anddogs cannot easily groomthemselves, says Dr. TracyCyr, an entomologist at theCollege of Veterinary Medi-cine & Biomedical Sciencesat Texas A&M University.Dont only look there, though. Ticks can be foundanywhere on the body.

The easiest way to ndthem is through simplegrooming. After the pet

comes inside, brush its en-tire coat and run your handsthrough its fur close to itsskin. If there is an unusualbump, it is time to furtherinvestigate.

When the weather isdry, ticks will usually bur-row into leaf litter to ndmoisture, says Cyr. If it ismoist and humid, ticks tendto stay on the tops of bladesof grass or weeds, waitingto attach themselves to petsor people that walk by.

Watching for ticks whenyou or your pet has beenoutside is important forprevention, Cyr believes. However, there is also a va-

riety of products availablethat repel or kill ticks andeas. Cyr recommends ask-ing your vet for the best op-tion, but warns owners toread the label before usingany over-the-counter prod-ucts.

Different species of tickscarry different diseases, allof which are potentially se-rious conditions. The threemost common diseases arebabesiosis, ehrlichiosis andLyme disease.

All three of these diseasestake at least 36 hours for

infection to occur. For thisreason, it is important toremove the tick as soon aspossible to lower the risk of the disease being transmit-ted.

While a visit to the vet-erinarian is important indetermining if the pet hascontracted a disease, re-moving the tick is a simpleprocess that owners canperform themselves.

Using your ngers to re-move a tick is not a goodidea because this usuallywill squish the tick. Twee-

    zers or forceps are recom-mended.

It is important to grab thepest at the point closest tothe pets skin. Cyr says toslowly pull the tick straightout, and be sure to avoidtwisting or yanking. Afterthe tick is removed, checkthe spot to make sure thatnothing remains of the tick.Occasionally the mouth-parts will remain attachedand cause irritation.

    When the removal is

animal handling require-ents.Cows are reported as open

r pregnant based on the op-ical density of blood samples

as measured by calibratedaboratory equipment. Al-hough BioPRYN is a yes/ o test; some estimation of

ength of gestation can beade based on the relativeagnitude of optical densi-

ies between samples. Thats, animals in late gestationill have a relatively higher

ptical density score com-ared to animals that are inarly gestation. Sometimes

a cow will be reported asopen-repeat or pregnant-epeat. This indicates that) the age of the embryo maye just less than 30 days, or

    2) that it has died, leavingsome residual PSPB. It isrecommended to bleed andre-test these animals afterve or more days to allowfor either embryo growth orclearance of residual earlyembryonic PSPB.

When comparing Bio-PRYN to rectal palpationor ultrasound, note that theresults of the BioPRYNtest are not immediatelyavailable, so any keep orcull decisions would be post-poned until receipt of the labreport. In addition, cattlemust be individually iden-tied to allow for culling orother management once theresults of the BioPRYN testare known. With the othertwo methods, neither indi-

vidual ID nor the need to re-work cattle is required. Also,a skilled person can deter-mine the stage of pregnancywith either rectal palpation

or ultrasound. This type of information may be usefulfor culling and marketingdecisions, or in determiningif pregnancy occurred (unin-tentionally) after the herdbulls were removed.

One specialized use of theBioPRYN test is in arti-cial insemination programsto determine conception toestrous synchronized AI vs.clean-up bulls. To do this,clean-up bulls are not placedwith the herd until 16 daysafter the last AI breeding.Blood testing at 30 to 35days after AI will detect AIpregnancies but not earlypregnancies to bulls. Allcows or heifers classied asopen with the rst test arere-tested 30 or more days af-ter the end of the bull breed-ing season. For more infor-mation contact BioTrackingLLC (www.biotracking.com).

Theres a difference be-ween biting and stinging. Iave been known to mix thewo up just out of habit, such

as by saying, I have beenitten by a scorpion. But

scorpions dont bite; theysting with the stinger at thend of their tails. Wasps andees sting too, not bite; thosewo related insects (bothn the order Hymenoptera)se a modied ovipositorhat injects venom insteadf eggs for that nasty sting.

Ants (another family in theorder Hymenoptera) alsosting, but they are multi-tal-ented and have good strongmandibles to bite, too.

    Ants are not the most

popular insects around be-cause of their biting, sting-ing swarms, but they aredenitely fascinating littlecritters. Previously I justadmired the big red ants(harvester ants) and wasdismayed by mounds of reants. I noticed occasionalbig carpenter ants or tinysugar ants but havent paidany ants much attention.Theyre too small and quickfor me to photograph eas-ily, and I dont know muchabout their identications.ts so much easier to be in-

terested in something whenyou can nd out its name ina eld guide like for butter-ies and birds.

I am going to have to lookcloser now. I was given a fas-cinating book called Jour-ney to the Ants: A Story of Scientic Exploration by

ert Hlldobler and Ed-ward O. Wilson. It describesmany of the neat adapta-

tions that different kinds of ants have for different envi-ronments and life histories. My personal favorites wereweaver ants from Africa.Worker ants folded leavestogether by making chainswith themselves, becausethe leaves are too strong forindividual ants to bend. Theworkers then used silk-ex-truding larvae to sew theleaves together. By repeat-ing this process many times, they create a nest.

You dont have to travelto Africa to nd fascinatingants. The harvester ants, orred ants as we call themat our house, are a greatexample. Journey to the

Ants describes how har- vester ants spread plants

around by transporting theseeds and forgetting wheresome of the stashes are. Itsrather like a squirrel, BlueJay or crow forgetting thehiding spot for an acorn. Theharvester ant mound in ouryard always has beautifulwispy lavender-tinted grassgrowing on it in the springand summer. I wonder if itsbecause the ants collectedseeds or if the grass justnds the aerated mound tobe a good growing spot.

Ants dont have great vi-sion, but they live in a worldof pheromones, which arechemical communication sig-nals. They lay down trails of pheromones for other work-ers to follow to a food source. If you are watching ants

crawl across a at smoothsurface, such as concrete, you can try this experimentto see how powerful its ef-fect is. Smear your ngeracross their trail. The for-merly business-like rush of the ant highway will be tem-porarily disrupted becauseyou have created a gap inthe chemical trail. Since thegap is only the width of yournger, they will soon pick upthe trail again and continueon their way.

Just watch out where youstep when youre watchingants. Dont be like me: I havea great knack for standingright in the middle of re

ant swarms and not noticinguntil they cover my hikingboots. With most of our ants, its not hard to avoid thatpesky biting and stinging, unlike the re ants. So, keepyour eyes peeled and youcan (pain-free!) enjoy watch-ing another one of naturesmarvels!

Cyr adds to consider your safety aswell. If possible, wear gloves to protectyour hands and be sure to wash yourhands thoroughly when nished.

When determining whether the pethas contracted a disease, look for u-like symptoms. If the pet is sleeping alot, has a fever, wont eat as usual, ap-pears to have aching joints or showsweakness, then a disease is probablypresent. Visit a veterinarian imme-diately to have tests run and beginproper treatment.

To be sure that the pet stays happyand healthy, it is best to check daily

for ticks and have regular medicalcheckups with your veterinarian, says Cyr.

Youre never too old or too young tostart a good exercise routine.

The Texas Department of Aging andisability Services developed the Texer-

ise program to encourage older adultsalong with their families and friendso adopt a regular exercise routine andealthy eating habits. But the Texer-ise message to get up and get activeapplies to Texans of all ages.If you cant imagine doing sit-ups,hy not try dancing? Everything from

gardening to a brisk walk around theeighborhood, or even a morning spentopping the oor, counts toward your

tness plan and can help improve yourealth.Regular physical activity provides

remendous health benets for all ages.t helps reduce the risk of stroke, diabe-es, high blood pressure and colon can-er. Exercise helps older Texans reducehe risk of falls and bone fractures, andt can relieve the pain of arthritis. Being

active helps children and teens main-

ain a healthy weight and build strongones. For busy adults, exercise hasroved to be an excellent way to ght

stress, improve your mood and relieveepression. When it comes to exercise, the rst

step is the biggest challenge. The De-

partment of Aging and Disability Ser- vices has 10 tips to help you get off to agood start:

    1. Pick a regular day and time forphysical activity. Having a routinehelps.

    2. Exercise three to ve times a weekfor 30 minutes.

    3. Track your activities. You can makeyour own activity log or use the one inthe Texercise Handbook.

    4. Work out with a friend.5. Include activities you enjoy.6. Wear loose-tting, weather-appro-

priate clothes that let you move freely.Wear comfortable shoes, preferably ath-letic shoes that provide good supportand dont cause blisters or calluses.

    7. For strength and balance exercise, consider using small weights. You canbuy weights or make your own withsome common household items. Forexample, an old tube sock lled withbeans can be used as an ankle weight,or you can carry a quart container lled

with sand or water for a quick 2-poundarm weight.8. Begin slowly and gradually work

your way to more vigorous exercises. If you havent exercised regularly in awhile, walking is a great way to start.Begin by walking a mile at a leisurely

pace ve times a week. Each week, tryto quicken your pace. Then you can be-gin to extend the length of your walk.Never exercise to the point of exhaus-tion or breathlessness.

    9. Learn to do exercises correctlyand safely. The Texercise Handbookincludes detailed instructions and il-lustrations for several exercises to helpbuild strength, improve balance and in-crease exibility.

    10. Be patient. Success wont happenovernight. It takes at least three weeksof regular exercise to start noticingchanges in your body.

Its important to set a realistic goal. You have to be able to walk aroundthe block before you can run aroundthe block. Once you start a regular t-ness routine, youll be surprised at howquickly your body responds. Youll feelbetter and have more energy.

    Elect Republican

    John Wayne PetersonWise County Commissioner

    Precinct 1

    Dear Wise County Voters,

As a third generation Wise County resident, my run for CountyCommissioner offers the voters a candidate well experienced inthe matters of business (insurance, taxes, contracts, bids, employeerelations etc, etc). This has been gained having worked in ourfamily business, Top-Way Properties, in Wise County for the past25 years. A large part of my work, outside of the ofce, was beingresponsible for road construction and maintenance.

Over the years we have built countless gravel roads, several milesof paved roads and other related projects including three bridges, two private and one public. The road construction business is inmy blood.

The bottom line is that the Commissioner has to make the nal de-cision on road maintenance. It is a priority to see to it that taxpayermoney gets the best investment without waste.

One of my goals as Commissioner will be to pave a minimum of 10 miles of gravel road per year. It may be possible to do more, weather permitting. Thats 10 miles done the right way. It takesa little longer to do it right, but it will be a good road when com-pleted.

Another goal is to establish a Forum with the residents. The Com-missioner is responsible for many decisions in the CommissionersCourt that affect the people, and people need to have input in thesedecisions.

There are other ideas and goals. I want to hear from you. Mypersonal Cell Phone number is 940-626-9217. Please call at yourconvenience anytime during business hours. My email address is
