    BY NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: I have two old

    splitleaf philodendrons in

large pots on my porch. They

    are so cumbersome I cant

keep them indoors in the win-

ter any longer. Can I cut their

trunks up to the first several

    oots and replant them?

    Probably not successfully.

The plants will have too muchleaf area in relation to the few

large roots that will make themove with them. It wouldbe best to find someone who

does have enough room forthem. I have one thats spent

every summer in a very largeconcrete pot in the shade

alongside our driveway. Minegoes into my greenhouse eachwinter, but to conserve space,

have to use plastic plant tieto draw its leaves up tightly.

ts worked fairly well forme for all of that time. Ive

not seen it done, but I sus-pect they would sprout out ifyou cut them back to 8 to 10

inches of the soil line, but youwould need to do so now to al-

low time for them to regrow. This would be my last choice,

however. For the record, thevariety Xanadu looks about

the same as Philodendronselloum but stays muchsmaller and more manage-

    able.

Dear Neil: How can we kill

    bahiagrass that has invaded

    our bermudagrass lawn?

Spray it with MSMA. Itmay yellow your bermuda for

a short while, but it will comeback very quickly. MSMA

kills dallisgrass as well. Youneed to make your applica-tion soon, before the grasses

start to slow down this fall.

Dear Neil: If you wereonly given the choice of one

roundcover to use in a heav-

    ily shaded area where St.

    ugustine has died out, what

    would it be?

    My own personal choice

in exactly that situation hasbeen mondograss (Ophio-

pogon). It grows to 6 to 8 inch-

es tall. I use dwarf mondo-grass, but not for large areas. It simply grows too slowly.

For variety, I also have purplewintercreeper euonymus and

Asian jasmine. Both are out-standing full-sun groundcov-

ers, but they also do very wellin shade. So, the answer isnt

quite as simple as the ques-tion.

Dear Neil: What can I do

to get rid of chinch bugs per-

    manently? They come back to

    the same places every summer

even though Ive had the lawn

    sprayed professionally.

    Unfortunately, thats not a

realistic expectation. Insecti-cides have much shorter re-

    siduals than you are wanting,

and chinch bugs are very mo-

bile from lawn to lawn. Thepractical solution is to learnto recognize them at their

earliest appearance, then toapply a good turf insecticide.

Its not terribly expensive, nor is it difficult. Those of us

who prefer St. Augustine forwhatever our reasons learn

    to cope with the insects.

    Dear Neil: Our Asian jas-

    mine has turned brown de-

    spite regular watering. Fun-

    gicides havent helped. The

    stems are also brown. What

    have you seen bother it?

Absolutely nothing otherthan freeze damage and

drought. It almost has to havegotten too dry sometime ear-

lier this late spring or sum-

mer. The fact that the stems

are brown is not good. It mayhave to fill back in from theedges of the healthy jasmine.

Dear Neil: How do I elimi-

    nate nutsedge from a Vinca

    minor bed? Hand-pulling has

    not worked.

    Check the labels of Image

and Manage. They are themost effective controls, butyour time is rapidly running

    out for this season.

    Dear Neil: Our very impor-

tant elm tree is besieged with

    mistletoe. Pruning doesnt

seem to slow it down. Ive

    heard there is something that

can be taken in through the

    roots. What do you suggest?

    There is no product that

can be applied to the soil to

be taken in through the roots.Professional applicators havea spray they can apply to the

mistletoe, but it does littlemore than kill it back to its

roots. The best control is toprune it out in its first winter,

before it becomes firmly root-ed and before the twigs be-

come larger branches. Aboutall that can be done when itis infesting large limbs is to

keep it pruned off flush eachwinter. If someone develops

a better remedy it will be areal boon to the horticulturalindustry.

    Dear Neil: We are consid-

    ering replacing our St. Augus-

    tine with Turffalo grass. Any

    comments?

    You need to decide, firs

and foremost, what the verybest turfgrass for your needswould be. If you have shade,

St. Augustine is the handsdown winner. Turffalo is a

form of buffalograss. As such,it is drought-tolerant, bu

it definitely will need full ornearly full sunlight. Bermu-

dagrass and St. Augustinewill both invade any buf-falograss planting. There is

    no chemical control to stopthem.

    ADHD

    Characterized by hyperactivity,

    impulsivity, and inattention, ADHD

    (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

is a condition that is sometimes evident

in children in their early school years.

Children with ADHD can find it difficult to

control their behavior and pay attention.

At times, many (if not most) children can

be restless, act without thinking, and

    often daydream. However, when these

actions begin to affect performance in

    school, social relationships with other

children, or behavior at home, ADHD

may be suspected. The impulsivechild who acts before thinking could

    be considered simply a discipline

problem, while the child who is

passive or sluggish may be viewed

as merely unmotivated. Yet in both

cases, the children may have ADHD.

ADHD is a serious concern. Come

    to LOVETTE PEDIATRICS, 2014 Ben

Merritt Drive, Suite B, Decatur where

highly trained and caring specialists will

evaluate and treat your child based on

his or her health condition. Our staff will

recommend treatment as well as care-

ful instruction on the use of any medi-

cations that may be needed. Make an

    By THE AMERICAN

    COUNSELINGASSOCIATION

    What should you do when

    a child experiences a dis-

appointment? Parents andteachers face this kind of

    situation regularly. Child-

    hood disappointments come

    in many shapes and sizes

    - not being chosen for a

    playground game... losing

    in some competition... hav-

ing a best friend or favorite

    teacher move away... los-

ing a pet... getting sick and

    missing some special activ-

ity the list is as long as a

    childs imagination.

    A good starting point in

    helping a child cope with

    disappointment is to listen

    to the childs story. Dont

    minimize or discount the

    event. Adults may see the

story as trivial - My best

friend wont talk to me - or,

they may see the event as a

    normal event - being turned

down for a school play part -that will soon be forgotten.

But for the child the dis-

    appointment is not some-

thing minor. It may feel like

    it will never be overcome.

    Its important to remember

    that your values and experi-

    ences are not the childs.

One reaction to avoid is al-

ways trying to sooth the dis-

    appointment with a pleas-

    ant experience or reward.

While that ice cream or sur-

    prise present may make the

    sorrow disappear, it can also

    establish patterns that will

be hard for the child to over-

come as he or she grows into

    adulthood.

    Instead, react to what has

    happened by talking with

    your child rather than to

    your child. Dont interrogate,

but instead give the child anopportunity to tell you what

    has happened.

    Share your understand-

    ing of the disappointment or

loss being felt. Do that with

    statements of understand-

    ing, not explanations of your

    own life difficulties. Dont

try to top the childs disap-

    pointment with stories of

    your own frustrations.

If you notice a change in

    behavior over a disappoint-

    ment, especially one for

    which you have few details,

make time to allow the child

a chance to talk about what

has happened and how he or

she is feeling. If your child

cant or wont talk about it,

    discuss the situation with

    your childs school counsel-

    or. Counselors are trained

to understand a childs feel-ings and how best to com-

    municate with children.

    Its important not to ig-

    nore or minimize the impact

    of disappointing events in

a childs life. When you do

    so you simply confirm what

    many children think all too

    often about the adults in

    their lives: They just dont

    understand.

    Did you every wish you

ere wealthy enough to ownshing and hunting landacross the Lone Star State?

hile actually owning theand might be a wishfulhinking for most of us, hav-ng access to thousands of

acres of prime fishing wa-ers and hunting lands, for

a very affordable price, is re-ally well within our reach.

My longtime friend, usty Schneider has been

in the business of locatinghunting lands, negotiat-ing deals with landownersand offering access to hishunting club members for

almost 20 years. Dusty re-cently joined forces withanother like group of folksthat lease fishing rights toover 80 excellent lakes inTexas. The merger is knowsas The American Fish andGame Club (www.ameri-canfishandgameclub.com)and organization is provid-ing myriad opportunitiesfor those that enjoy huntingand fishing on a wide assort-ment of properties, ratherthan just one lease. Heresthe way the Club works:The member simply goes

online and decides where hewishes to hunt or fish. Theclubs website has a listingof properties that includesparticulars to each lake orhunting area and very cleardriving direction. A fulltime employee with the clubschedules the lake or pieceof hunting property for theclub member on a particu-lar day and the deal is done, simple as that!

This past week, I joinedSchneider and long timeclub member Mike Hunn fora little bass fishing. Whenplanning the trip, Dusty

asked me to go online andchoose a lake I wished to fish. With lakes well distributedacross the state, I though Idlook for one close to home.

was surprised to find theClub has a lake within threemiles of my home. I studiedthe details pertaining to thelake online and drove rightto the gate. The map on theClubs web page depicted avery accurate descriptionof the various lakes on theproperty and the roads usedto access them. Well orga-nized!

Texas hunters are wellknow for lease hopping, changing from one huntinglease to the next, sometimeson a yearly basis, in hopes offinding that perfect huntingspot. With about 20 hunt-

ing ranches currently on-line with the Club, huntershave the freedom to hunt

different regions and gameanimals, all within the samehunting year. Schneidersays stands and feeders arein place, all the hunter hasto do is schedule the time heor she wishes to hunt andshow up.

Some of our hunters areinterested in hunting onlybirds, everything from doveto turkey, and we have aspecial package and rate toaccommodate them. Otherswish to hunt deer or hogswhile some wish to sign upfor fishing only. We haveplans to accommodate the

different levels of involve-ment with the Club, saidSchneider.

I was impressed at theaffordable rates; fishingrights on over 80 lakes isless that $300 per year andthe other opportunities areproportionally economicallypriced.

Habitat improvement isa big factor with the Cluband Schneider says improv-ing the properties to insurebetter hunting and fishingis something the land own-ers he works with really like

about the Club.We do everything fromplanting food sources forwildlife to creating coverfor baitfish and bass on ourlakes. Were in this thing forthe long haul and under-stand that proper manage-ment practices are key tokeeping these lands boun-tiful in years to come, headded.

On our recent scouting/bass fishing trip to the lakenear my home, Schneiderwas continually pointingout projects to improve theduck hunting and fishing

    opportunities.

See that little area ofstanding water over there? This winter, it should be ide-

al duck habitat. We will soonbe building a couple of per-manent blinds here. Then, when club members showup this fall and winter, theywont have to worry aboutspending time working, theblind locations will be notedon the locator map on ourweb site and hunters can gostraight to the blind to hunt.We need to cut a couple ofthose dead willows and getthem in the deep end of thelake to improve the habitatfor bass, Schneider said.

Fishing private waterswithout crowds is a real

treat and one of the reasonsfor the huge success of theclub. Many anglers like theidea of having sole fishingrights to a lake for the entireday. Some of the lakes havesmall fishing boats providedfor the use of members butmany of the Club membershave their own 2 man bassboats or aluminum Jonboats with trolling motors. Most of the lakes providegood bank access, as did theone we fished recently.

The American Fish andGame Club gives its mem-

bers affordable and varieduse of prime privates landsand waters which, to myway of thinking, is a conceptwhose time has come. Longgone are the days whengaining access to good fish-ing and hunting is as simpleas asking a neighbor foraccess to his back fortyor fishing pond. CLAYTON

    CLAYTONS CORNER

By GARY CLAYTONWise Co. Extension Agent

    Todays column is part two

of a two-part series on effec-tive cattle handling tech-

niques. If you missed lastweeks suggestions, call the

xtension office and well behappy to get those for you.

    6. Pressure cattle from be-hind only when absolutelynecessary. Like any prey

animal, cattle cannot seedirectly behind themselves.

f you assume a position di-rectly behind cattle (in theirblind spot), they will turn to

one side or the other in orderto see you. To drive cattle in

a straight line, assume a po-sition behind their point of

balance (shoulder) and off toeither side.

    7. When working cattle,

move in triangles. Soundsodd, but it works. Move in

straight lines. For example,if you work in an arch pat-

tern behind the cattle, youwill find them being drawnfrom side to side (and con-

sequently walking in a zig-zag pattern) as they follow

your movement. Invadetheir flight zone to create or

correct movement. Retreatfrom their flight zone to slowor stop movement.

    8. Going with the flow ofcattle slows them down or

stops their movement. Itsall about that point of bal-

ance as you move in thesame direction the cattle

are traveling, when you ap-proach a position parallel totheir point of balance, they

will slow down, and as you

pass the point of balancethey will stop and/or reversetheir direction.

    9. Going againstthe flow of cattle

    initiates or accel-erates their move-

ment. The inverseor opposite of point-

er No. 8. Ever filledthe chute, and thenpressured the last

animal in line tomove the others

forward? Its likelyhe or she had no place to goand nothing happened. Next

time, try leaving their flightzone, walk up ahead of the

line, then re-enter the flightzone of the first in line and

walk alongside the chute, front to back, and see whathappens. We suspect that as

you pass their point of bal-ance, they will step forward.

The one in the front willpull the others forward.

    10. Cattle work best whenthey are ready - You have toget them there... Cattle (like

husbands) are not mindreaders. You have to teach,

condition and prepare them.Unfortunately, todays cattle

owners are short on timeand experienced labor, andconsequently, dont spend

time with their cattle as didthe stock men of days gone

by. Perhaps theres not timeto educate the entire exist-

ing herd, but quality timespent with replacement

heifers will pay dividendsfor years to come. Spendtime with heifers (in both

    the pasture and the pens)

when you want to, not justwhen you have to.

    The days of

    whoop and hollercattle handling need

    to pass quickly.Numerous others

    will handle yourcattle after they

have left your care.Bad habits and un-ruly behavior are

    learned. Make sureyour cattle (calves)

are started cor-rectly. First impressions arecritical - as Will Rogers once

said, You never get a sec-ond chance to make a first

    impression.Safety and wholesomeness

of our food supply have longbeen important. Our preser-

    vation techniques have pro-

gressed from smoking, dry-ing and salting, to canning,to refrigeration and freezing,

to vacuum packaging andmost recently to irradiation.

The U.S. food supply is thesafest and most wholesome

    on the planet.Beef consumers remain

interested in safety andwholesomeness, but aremore concerned than ever

before about where and howtheir food is produced. When

working slow and correct, shouting, whistling, pokingand prodding cattle is un-

necessary. In fact, they arecounterproductive and dis-

tract cattle from what youreally want them to do.

    Area pecan growers should

    be planning their first appli-

cation of insecticide for pe-can weevil control. A secondapplication should be made

10 days after the first if ac-

    tivity continues. Most of our

entomologists agree the Se-vin 80S is the insecticide ofchoice for weevil control.

As with other forms of cancer, the earlier ovarian cancer is

diagnosed, the better the chances are for recovery. However, ovarian

cancer is difficult to detect early. In many cases, the symptoms are non-

existent or very mild until the disease reaches a more advanced stage.

To complicate matters, symptoms of ovarian cancer are nonspecific and

often mimic those of other conditions, such as digestive and bladder

disorders. Consequently, women are counseled to be suspicious of

    symptoms such as abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling, or bloating;

urinary urgency; and/or pelvic pain or discomfort. Additional signs may

include persistent indigestion, unexplained changes in bowel or bladder

habits, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss or gain, pain during

    intercourse, and low back pain.

It is important for a woman to have routine pelvic exams to screenfor enlarged ovaries since ovarian cancer has few, if any, symptomsin its early stages. DAVIS

    WISE NOTESFOR CONSUMERS

By TANYA DAVISWise Co. Extension Agent

In spite of what you mayhave heard, not all fat isbad. Although a high-fat dietprobably isnt good for any-body especially for peoplewith diabetes fat can stillhave a place in a healthful

menu.To help you learn how to

plan and prepare meals thatcan be enjoyed by peoplewith and without diabetes,Texas AgriLife ExtensionService is planning a four-part series of cooking class-es called Cooking Well with

    iabetes.The classes will be held

from 6-8 p.m., beginningTuesday Sept. 2 and con-

tinuing through Sept. 9, 16and Oct. 7 at the Wise Coun-ty Extension office, locatedat 206 S. State inDecatur. Cost forthe four week seriesis $20 per personor $30 per couple.Space is limited, sopre-registration is

a must. The serieswill include cookingdemonstrations aswell as discussionsof research findingson diabetes fromarea dieticians, diabetes ed-ucators and nutritionists.

Following is a sample ofinformation that will be cov-ered during the class series.People with diabetes need tobe more careful than others

in watching their dietaryfat intake because diabetesbrings an increased risk of

heart disease andother medical con-ditions. Followingare a few simplesteps that can helpyou lower your fatintake:

When cookingand baking, use oilsand fat substitutesinstead of lard orshortening. Buy leaner cuts

of meat and low-fat or no-fatdairy products. Trim the visible fats

from cuts of meat beforecooking. When cooking, reduce

the amount of fat in a recipe

by one-quarter. Limit the amount of fat

you consume to 30 percentor less of daily calories.

There are four types of fat:monounsaturated fats, poly-unsaturated fats, saturatedfats and trans fatty acids.

The good news: Monoun-saturated fats and polyun-

saturated fats can help youlower your blood cholesterolif you decrease the amountof saturated fat in your diet.

The bad news: Saturatedfats are solid at room tem-perature and, when con-sumed, tend to accumulatein the blood vessels, whichrestricts blood flow throughthose vessels. This increasesthe risk of heart attack orstroke. Trans fatty acids,

often found in baked goods, margarine and hydrogenat-ed oils, can raise blood cho-lesterol levels.

To gain additional infor-mation about how peoplewith diabetes can ensure

that fat is a part of a health-ful diet, I encourage you topre register for the CookingWell with Diabetes class se-ries by contacting the Ex-tension office at (940) 627-3341.

    By JIM MILLER

    Dear Savvy Senior,

    Are there any good re-

    sources that offer tips on

    what older drivers should

    look for when purchasing a

new car? My wife and I have

    been looking around, but at

ages 69 and 71 we want to

make sure we get a good ve-

hicle that meets our futureneeds and current budget.

    Senior Drivers

    Dear Senior,The National Older Driver

esearch and Training Cen-ter at the University of Flor-ida and AAA recently de-

veloped a handy new guidecalled Smart Features for

ature Drivers thats per-fect for seniors who are in

the market for a new car orthose evaluating their cur-rent one. Heres what you

    should know.Shopping guide

Even healthy seniors facesome degree of physical

challenge (reduced vision, mobility, strength, range ofmotion and reaction time)

that can make driving moredifficult. Finding a vehicle

with features that meetsthose challenges can make a

big difference in both plea-sure and safety.

    Smart Features for Ma-

ture Drivers is a great toolto help seniors evaluate a

vehicle, by focusing on thedifferent features that ad-

dress age-related problems. Here are some of the fea-tures they recommend you

look for, depending on whatails you: Limited range of mo-

    tion: Drivers with limited

flexibility in the neck, backand arms usually have a

difficult time looking overtheir shoulder to backup orto merge into traffic, and

have a hard time reachingfor their seat belt too. These

drivers can benefit fromlarge, wide-angle mirrorswhich minimize blind spots,

a tilt and telescoping steer-ing wheel that offers more

comfortable positions to al-leviate neck and shoulder

pain, adjustable seat beltsthat are easier to reach, andheated seats with lumbar

support to help those stiffachy backs.

Limited mobility: If yousuffer from hip or leg pain

or limited knee range of mo-tion, look for vehicles thathave low door thresholds,

six-way adjustable powerseats, and seat heights that

come up to your mid-thighlevel. These features make

it easier for you to get intoand out of the vehicle. Arthritic hands: Driv-

ers who have hand or wristarthritis or a weak upper

body can benefit from thicksteering wheels which are

easier to grip, keyless entryand ignition that eliminatestwisting and turning, power

mirrors and seats that areeasy to operate, larger dash-

board controls with buttonsversus knobs that are easier

to manipulate, and four-doormodels versus two-door cars

which have longer heavierdoors that are harder toopen.Diminished vision: Driv-

    ers with diminished vision

and sensitivity to glare willfind extendable sun visorshelpful, as well as larger

audio and climate controlswith contrasting text which

are easier to see. Short drivers: For old-

er drivers that are smallin stature it can be a chal-lenge to comfortably reach

the pedals without being tooclose to the airbag or being

able to see over the steeringwheel safely. To help with

these problems, look for ve-hicles with adjustable footpedals, tilt and telescoping

    steering wheel and six-wayadjustable seats.

    AAA also recommends

that all seniors, regardlessof their health issues, lookfor vehicles with solid safety

features and a proven safetyrecord. Start by checking

the vehicles crash test androllover ratings which you

can find at www.safercar.gov. Other safety featuresto look for include: side and

    dual-stage/threshold airbagsthat adjust the deployment

force based on the sever-ity of the crash; adjustable

head restraints and extrapadding that moves forward

to cushion the head, reduc-ing neck injuries when a caris hit from the rear; antilock

brakes that prevents thewheels from locking dur-

ing emergency braking; anddynamic stability controlwhich helps prevent loss of

    control in a turn.

Mature Drivers brochure, call your local AAA (call800-564-6222 to get your

local number). You can also view it online at www.aaa.

If you are going to show a lamb at the WiseCounty Youth Fair and will have it for a project,

you need to start working with them early. When leading your lamb during a show, you

are not supposed to use a halter on your lamb. Some show/judges will allow you to use a hal-ter, but it is preferred that you do not use one.

You cant just expect your lamb to go intothe show ring knowing how to be led without

its halter, so you must train it to do so. In orderto do this, pick a day when you have nothing

better to do (whats better than sheep?) andget your lamb out. Practice nothing but lead-ing without the halter.

When leading your lamb, place one handunder its chin near the jaw line and your other

hand on the back of your lambs head, rightbelow the ears. Using slight pressure, gentlypull on your lambs head in the direction you

would like to go. If your lamb will not walkwhen you are leading it, take your hand off of

its head and tap or squeeze the lambs dock. This is slightly uncomfortable to the lamb and

will cause him to move. However, some lambs, particularly wild ones, may jump into the airinstead of moving forward when their docks

are touched. Never let go if they jump. Thiswill only teach the lamb that when he jumps

he gets loose. If you are unable to control yourlamb when it jumps, you can try to straddle

your lamb to prevent him from jumping alto-gether.

No one can accuse John Shelley of going through the middle-age crazies. He always wanted to be a police officer, but life took him down a different path

while raising a family in Mineral Wells. He opened a successful insurance companyand has been quite content with his lifestyle.

But then, his own son became a police officer, and his daughter-in-law is a statetrooper. So, inspired by them, Shelley is following his own life-long dream and isenrolled as a cadet i n the WC Law Enforcement Academy.

Its a challenge, he said. But the Law Enforcement Academy is very good. Goodinstructors, too...not only do they know their stuff, they know how to convey it.

Soon, youll be seeing another proud man in blue, John Shelley, trained by thegood instructors at WC Law Enforcement Academy.WC salutes you, Cadet Shelley!

    LOWESTPRICEEVER!

    By CLAIRE CURRY

Just about everyone hasseen a Great Blue Heron. These are large, elegant

birds, often refered to as graycranes or blue cranes. This

is a wonderful time of year towatch for herons and egrets.

They are all around manyponds and lakes. In addition

to Big Blue, as I like to callthe Great Blue Heron, wehave several other species of

herons and egrets.First, what is the differ-

ence between a heron andan egret? Just the name. They are all members of the

family Ardeidae and someegrets and herons are in the

same genus. For example, the Great Blue Heron is

Ardea herodias, while theGreat Egret is Ardea alba.

    ikewise, Snowy Egret and

ittle Blue Heron are in agenus together. The family

also includes bitterns, whichare brown streaky marsh

birds. I will not discuss themhere since, although theyare not rare here, they are

very difficult to find. Typi-al herons, night-herons,

and bitterns are all in dif-erent subfamilies. Typical

erons include Great Blueeron, Little Blue Heron,

    and Snowy Egret. We have

wo species of night-heron:lack-crowned and Yellow-

    rowned.I will start with some

ark-colored herons. Weave good ol Big Blue, the

reat Blue Heron. Its a bigird: the largest heron inorth America. They usu-

ally eat fish, frogs, and otheraquatic animals, but will eat

hatever they can catch, in-luding small mammals and

    small birds. The Great Blue

eron nests in colonies.t is always fun to see the

awkward young in big stickests at the tops of trees,

ostling for nest space. Bothparents incubate three tofive pale blue eggs for almost

a month. Then the youngherons spend another two

to three months in the nestbefore leaving. This species

is present in our area year-round.

    The Little Blue Heron is

much smaller. Adults aredark slaty blue, with a ma-

roon tint to the neck andhead. Like the Big Blue,

its diet is varied and caninclude small fish, crusta-ceans, grasshoppers, frogs,

lizards, snakes, turtles andspiders; it will forage both in

the water and on land. This

is another colony-nester;eggs take about three weeks

to hatch and the young be-gin to climb out of the nest attwo to three weeks. They are

independent at about six toseven weeks. This species is

only found here in the sum-mer. Immature Little Blues

are actually white, and moltpatchwork-like into the slatyblue color. The white imma-

tures are very similar to theSnowy Egret, which I will

talk about next.Snowy Egrets are said

to have golden slippers.Adults have black legs with

yellow feet (and matchingblack beak with yellow infront of the eye). It is also

known for its active feedingbehavior of dancing wildly

around in shallow water. However, I have noticeda tendency for the Snowy

Egret to become stealthy, slow, and subdued whenever

I decided to point this out topeople. Its diet and nesting

habits are similar to the Lit-tle Blue Heron, and like thatspecies, it only occurs here

during the summer.Immatures of these two

species can be nearly impos-sible to separate at times.

Usually, Snowy Egret has adark-tipped beak that fadesinto yellow-green lores (that

is the area in front of theeye) and its legs are yel-

low-green, occasionally withblack on the front of the legs.

The Little Blue Heron typi-cally has pale green, gray, orpinkish bill and lores with

the dark tip, and dull greenlegs. Nonetheless, these col-

ors can be variable and hard

to separate. The immatureLittle Blue Heron, even

when all white otherwise, has tiny bits of dark on thewingtips. If you can see this

you have your identification.Otherwise it is sometimes

    best to leave some unidenti-fied.

A rare late summer visitorto our area is the TricoloredHeron. It is about the size

of a Little Blue or Snowy, but has a very long yellow

(nonbreeding plumage) orblue and black (breeding

plumage) bill, and a uniquedark breast with contrasting

white belly in both breedingand non-breeding plum-age. It is a very elegant and

pretty heron that usually oc-curs on the Gulf coast and

    eastern coast of the UnitedStates.

Another white egret is theGreat Egret. It is the size ofa Great Blue but is all white

    in all plumages. It has ayellow beak and black legs;

these features (in addition tothe size) distinguish it from

Snowy Egrets and imma-ture Little Blue Herons. It isusually a colony-nester and

mainly occurs here duringthe summer. Its diet is simi-

lar to the Great Blue Her-ons. Both parents incubate

three to four eggs for aboutthree weeks; the young be-

gin to climb out of the nestat about 3 weeks age, andcan fly in another three to

    four weeks.Now for some smaller

birds. The Cattle Egret, asyou all know, follows cows (or

sometimes tractors plowingfields) looking for disturbed

insects. This short egret iswhite (with orange-yellowpatches on the head, breast,

and back during peak breed-ing plumage) with a yellow

beak and black legs (redduring peak breeding sea-

son). Cattle Egrets didntoccur on our continent be-fore the early 1950s; they

spread to South Americafrom Africa in the late 1800s

and then made their way upnorth. It was not introduced

by humans and is thought tousually have little impact on

native heron populations. It,like the other species, usu-ally nests in colonies. It is

    only found here during thesummer.

The Green Heron is ashort, stocky bird with agreenish back and cap and

rufous belly. The immaturesare streaky brown. If you

get to see one up close it isa treat; the rich colors and

fine details on the wings are

exquisite. This species usu-ally nests alone or in smallgroups. The young can ap-

parently fly when they are3 weeks old, but the parents

will take care of them for afew more weeks after that.

    This is another summer spe-cies.

    Finally, the night-her-

ons. I have seen more Yel-low-crowned than Black-

crowned here, but both dooccur during the summer.

They are called night-heronsbecause they mainly forageat dusk and dawn, although

you can see them out duringthe day. The Yellow-crowned

Night-Heron is gray with aboldly patterned head black-

    and-white head. The Black-crowned Night-Heron is

pale gray with a black crownand back. Immatures of bothspecies are extremely hard

to tell apart; they are bothstreaky brown with white-

spotted wings. The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron main-ly eats crustaceans such as

crayfish and crabs, whilethe Black-crowned prefers

fish. As with all the otherherons, they will eat lots of

    other aquatic critters in-

cluding frogs, mollusks, andinsects. The Black-crownedNight-Heron usually breeds

in colonies, while the Yellow-crowned nests alone or in

    colonies.The herons and egrets are

out in force this time of year, stalking the ponds, creeks, and fields for a bite to eat.

Be on the lookout for theirelegant, slender forms and

careful steps. Just be gladyou are not a fish or frog un-

    der their watchful eyes!

    The next monthly field

trips on the Lyndon B. John-son National Grasslands
