GARDENER’S MAILBAG

By NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: I planted my fi rst gardenia in September. I used the planting mix rec-ommended for our area and I have fertilized it every two weeks all fall and into early winter. Should I prune it at all now?

No. Any reshaping you do of gardenias should follow the main spring bloom, and it should only be as-needed to maintain good plant form. Anytime a gardenia suffers winter damage you can also prune back the dead twigs in late February or March. In fact, if you fear that your plant might be harmed by cold, cover it with light-weight frost cloth or an old sheet. Either would pre-vent wind burn as well as trapping warmth from the soil. Otherwise, just keep it moist this winter. It does not need any additional fertil-izer until it starts growing next spring.

Dear Neil: I have a se-rious problem with Take All Root Rot in my St. Au-gustine. Is there anything I

should use to treat it during the winter?

That’s a fungal disease that does present a clear danger to St. Augustine. It kills the roots, and the grass then weakens and dies. It defi nitely is more common in cool weather, especially in the spring. Texas A&M research has shown that spreading a 1-inch layer of Canadian peat across the lawn will stop the spread of the disease. However, that application should be made in late March or April, not during the winter. Conven-tional fungicides are not effective. You can see the re-sults of such an application by looking at my Web site, www.neilsperry.com and clicking through to the Most Asked Questions/lawns. The before-and-after photos are of my own St. Augustine.

Dear Neil: We have an ugly building behind our back fence. What screen would be least expensive? It has to stay beneath the pow-er lines that run across the area. The wood fence is 5 to 6 feet tall. What about witch-hazel?

The various witchhazels are deciduous shrubs, so they won’t do much screening for 4 to 5 months each year. You’d be better served by one of the hollies that grow to 6 to 12 feet tall. Choose from regular Burford, Wil-lowleaf (also known as Nee-

dlepoint), Nellie R. Stevens, Mary Nell and its red-holly hybrids, also regular yau-pon. Of the batch, Nellie R. Stevens is probably your best combination of speed and good looks. Waxleaf li-gustrums and elaeagnus are other candidates.

Dear Neil: I accidentally watered my Bradford pear with a mixture containing a weedkiller last year. It sur-vived, but its growth was sickly. Do you think it will recover?

There is just no way to know. Only time will tell. It depends on a lot of variables, not the least of which is the type of weedkiller involved. Some are much more persis-tent than others. The tree’s original vigor plays a part, as does its age. The average life expectancy of Bradford pears is probably 10 or 12 years. They have such bad branch angles that the trees end up self-destructing by splitting down their trunks by that age. Rather than do-ing a lot of heroic things to it next spring, the vote here would be to replace it if it’s still looking puny. A new tree would give you good shade faster. If you do make the change-out, consider a different type of tree.

Dear Neil: Texas A&M and the Extension Service (in one of their bulletins) rec-ommend using a 3-1-2-ra-

tio fertilizer every 10 weeks starting in spring. We have 100 homes in our develop-ment, and several of us have to hire the crew that will feed the lawns. We have to go out for bids. What should we require?

The only way to know ex-actly what your lawns need is to have soil tests run on them. You could probably sample from 10 represen-tative lawns to see if there are trends. Please check the print date of the brochure. That sounds like what A&M was suggesting 15 or 20 years ago. Many of their more recent soil test results have prescribed all-nitrogen plant foods. In either event, you should specify one that

has half or more of its ni-trogen in slow-release form. (Good for you for following A&M’s advice. The state’s best information comes from their research.)

OBESITY IN CHILDREN

Obesity in children is often defi ned as body weight that is at least 20% higher than a healthy weight for a child of the same height, or a body fat percentage above 25% in boys or above 32% in girls. Obesity is now among the most widespread medical problems affecting children and adolescents. About 15% of adolescents ages 12-19 and children ages 6-11 are obese according to the American Obesity Association. Childhood obesity represents one of our greatest health challenges, and the number of obese children is expected to continue to increase. Obesity has a profound effect on a child’s life. Obesity increases a child’s risk of numerous health problems, and it also can create emotional and social problems.

Obesity in children is of special concern to many parents. Speak with an experienced doctor at LOVETTE PEDIATRICS. Our offi ce has helped many children over the years and you can count on us to provide careful assessment of your situation. Please call (940) 627-8044 for an appointment. “Do you have a kinder, more adaptable friend in the food world than soup? Who soothes you when you are ill? Who warms you in the winter and cools you in the summer? Soup does its loyal best. You don’t catch steak hanging around when you’re poor and sick, do you?” This quote comes from Judith Martin, better known as Miss Manners, and it di-rects us to think about soup and its benefi ts.

Soup is warmth and com-fort, security and strength, simple and fl avorful. With contemporary accessories like food processors, blend-ers and slow cookers, soups are beginning to qualify not only as down-home cooking, but as practical, fast foods. The aroma of a simmering soup or stew can restore your spirits, and soups and stews are great when made ahead because their fl avor improves overnight.

Deanna Sagaser, county Extension agent in Hale County, shared the follow-ing information concerning

soups and stews. To make good soups, you

need more taste than skill. The recipes you follow are only guides. Even if you follow a recipe and it is painstak-ingly detailed, the soup will never be exactly the same twice. The moral of this story is you must taste what you are cooking often. Don’t forget the food safety is-sue; always use a clean spoon.

Adjust the dish by add-ing more salt, pepper, spices or herbs. Mustard, sugar, Worcestershire or soy sauce, red wine, bouillon cubes, drippings from a roast or a tiny bit of ground cloves to improve broths.

Stews and chilies typically have a tomato base and lots of meat. The pieces of meat and vegetables in a stew are generally larger than in a soup, and the mixture is considerably thicker. Don’t cheat on the simmering time on stews. The long, slow sim-mer helps extract maximum fl avor and ensures fork ten-

der results. Make sure the spoon-

ful you taste is relatively cool. If it’s hot, you won’t be

aware of its real fl avor. Sometimes just letting a soup sit for half an hour can improve it, so when you aren’t happy with your dish, walk away from it, then come back and taste again.

Many soups take on a richer taste if refrigerated for a

day to give the fl avors time to blend and develop. You can store soup in the re-frigerator up to three days. Most soups freeze well, es-pecially thick gumbos, chil-ies and stews. Be sure and place soups and stews in small enough containers so that it will chill promptly in the center of the mixture. Package soups and stews in pint or quart plastic freezer containers or zip top freezer bags. Be sure to label them with the recipe name, date and amount. Freeze soups

CLAYTON’S CORNERBy GARY CLAYTON

Wise Co. Extension Agent

Ranchers, cattle owners, veterinar-ians and other interested persons are encouraged to comment on Texas’ pro-posed regulations to control Trichomoniasis, or “trich,” a venereal disease of cattle that causes the early death of fetuses and abortions, result-ing in infertility in cows and extended breeding seasons in a herd. The comment period for the proposed regulations by the Texas Animal Health Commission will end Friday, Jan. 30.

“Trich infection often oc-curs when a producer un-knowingly introduces into the herd a trich-infected bull, which in turn, infects cows during breeding,” said Dr. Bob Hillman, Texas’ state veteri-narian and executive director of the TAHC. “Likewise, infected cows can transmit the disease to ‘clean’ bulls, creating a cycle of disease. Cattle ex-perts say that the extended breeding seasons, loss of a percentage of the calf crop and strung-out calf crops result-ing from trich infection can cause up to a 20 percent loss of herd income.”

All western states, except Kansas and Texas, have taken regulatory ac-tion to prevent the introduction of in-fected bulls and to control the spread of this cattle disease within their states.

Hillman said the Texas Trichomoni-asis Program, as proposed, would roll out in two stages.

“The fi rst stage could go into effect in late March 2009 and would place new entry requirements on bulls en-tering Texas from other states,” he

said. “Breeding bulls would have to be offi cially identifi ed and certifi ed as vir-gin bulls or be tested negative for trich within 30 days prior to entering Texas from any state. Bulls could be certi-fi ed as virgins until they were about

18 months old, as evidenced by the eruption of permanent incisors and accompanied by a breeder’s statement that the animal had not been com-mingled with heifers or cows. Bulls entering Texas without certifi cation as virgin or proof of negative trich tests would be restricted to sale or move-ment for slaughter only.”

Hillman said all the non-virgin bulls in a herd could be tested at the same time,

and if results are negative, this single test would be suffi cient for Texas im-port purposes for any of the bulls in the tested herd. For individual bulls not part of a whole herd negative test, three consecutive negative culture tests would be required, at least seven days apart, or two negative RT-PCR tests performed at least seven days apart.

“One positive test indicates that the bull is infected,” he said. “In most states, a positive-test bull may un-dergo a confi rmatory test before being classifi ed as infected and restricted to slaughter only. There is no effective treatment for infected bulls, and to halt the spread of disease, these ani-mals should be culled.”

Under the proposed regulations, trich would become a reportable live-stock disease in Texas, requiring both negative and positive test results to be reported within 48 hours.

The second phase of the proposed

Texas Trichomoniasis Program would be effective no earlier than September 2009. Prior to changing ownership in Texas, breeding bulls within the state would be required to be offi cially iden-tifi ed and certifi ed as a virgin bull or undergo the testing process for trich. Infected bulls would be restricted to slaughter or movement through a live-stock market to slaughter.

The Texas Veterinary Medical Diag-nostic Laboratories in College Station and Amarillo would serve as the offi -cial laboratories for the program, and Texas accredited veterinarians could be certifi ed to collect the samples. The bull’s owner or seller would be respon-sible for costs associated with virgin certifi cation or testing of bulls. Labora-tory fees are about $5 for the InPouch culture test and $25 for the RT-PCR test.

Hillman said the program would un-dergo annual review by a Trichomoni-asis Program Review Working Group, which would consist of representatives from the cattle industry, veterinary fi eld, universities and the TAHC, to determine if the program is still neces-sary.

PATTERSON

While the traditional Pap smear is an effective screening tool for cervical cancer, it produces more “false positives” than health experts would like to see. A false positive test may suggest that a woman has potentially dangerous pre-cancerous changes when, in fact, she does not. The main reason for the false positives is that the human papilloma virus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer often disappears spontaneously. To counter the problem of false positives, a research team recently combined a Pap smear with a simple test for a protein called P16INK4A, which provided a biomarker showing cell changes that indicated a woman likely has pre-cancerous lesions. The refi ned test helped identify 88% of women with cancer-causing lesions with far fewer false positives.

Cervical cancer symptoms often go unnoticed because they mimic so many other ailments; symptoms include painful urination, heavy discharge and irregular bleeding. However, it’s very important to note that cervical cancer often presents no symptoms. If you are experiencing these cervical cancer symptoms, please see a doctor. He or she will most likely perform a pelvic exam and may order further tests. For further information about anything discussed in today’s column, call WISE OBSTETRICS &

“OH YES!”“OH YES!”

Half of Wise County cities experienced a drop in sales tax revenue in November.

Sales tax rebates were dis-tributed by the state comp-troller in December. State-wide, rebates represent a 6 percent increase over calen-dar year 2007. Revenues are up 9 percent for December.

For December, revenues were up for the cities of Bridgeport, Decatur, Lake Bridgeport, New Fairview, Paradise and Rhome. On the year, revenues were up in every city in the county with the exception of Lake Bridgeport.

Bridgeport continued to lead in rebates, with $453,230 in December and $4.7 million for the year.

Decatur earned $322,466 in December, up 14 percent over this time last year. De-catur received $3.8 million for the calendar year, up 10 percent over 2007.

The city of New Fairview lead all other cities with $69,520 for December, bring-ing the city’s yearly total to $696,538, an 88 percent in-crease over 2007.

Wise County received $463,315 in December for a yearly total of $5.2 million, up 19 percent from 2007.

Statewide, sales tax col-lections for the fi rst three months of the fi scal year continued to grow. However, the increase is less than in the past three years, accord-ing to the comptroller.

6-DAY FORECAST FOR WISE COUNTY

Cory Sims said the convenient location ofWeatherford College’s Education Center inDecatur was what first drew him in. “But once I started talking with thecounselors and teachers here, I knew that Ihad made the right decision. Everyone fromthe director of the center to the maintenancestaff is extremely kind and helpful.”

Cory’s heading to another North Texascommunity college soon to finish his nursingprogram and hopes that he finds the same “caring”attitude there. “WC staff actually care about you as a personand your academic pursuits. That’s been theboost I needed.”
