For the last three months, Tim and his wife, Kelly, have spent much of their time at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, hoping and praying for the progress of their 3-month-old son, Riley. Those months have been an emotional roller coaster. They’ve waited at the hospital through two heart surgeries. They’ve watched doctors and nurses perform chest compressions on Riley. They’ve stared at their son in his warm- ing bed, tubes coming out of his nose, mouth and veins. They’ve also celebrated the small things. They love to see him smile, even if it’s just because of gas. They couldn’t wait to change his diaper. And they waited for what seemed an eternity – two weeks – to finally hold their baby boy for the second time. While Riley’s heart may be small in stature, he has shown a fighting spirit that lifts the faith of his parents and doctors. Dear Neil: My St. Augus-tine lawn has Take All Root Rot fungus. I have spent a lot of money on fungicides, but can’t afford to do that any more. I saw in one of your ar-ticles that they’re not effective against this disease, anyway. A nurseryman recommended that only iron be applied to the lawn this year – that the disease wouldn’t survive in a soil that is mostly iron. Is that true?

Research done by plant pa-thologist Dr. Phil Colbaugh of Texas A&M has shown that a 1-inch layer of Canadian peat moss will suppress the TARR fungus for one to three years. In my own experiences in my lawn, this has been the most effective treatment by far. I have not seen any research-backed suggestion of iron in this capacity. For those who are not familiar, TARR causes St. Augustine to thin and die away gradually. The symptoms are somewhat like those of grub worms: the grass dies and pulls loose easily from the soil, runners and all. However, grubs are not present. The Plant Dis-ease Diagnostic Laboratory

at Texas A&M can confi rm its presence. If TARR is con-fi rmed, Dr. Colbaugh’s rec-ommendation is to apply the peat uniformly over the lawn in April or May. The results can be dramatic.

Dear Neil: I have at-tached photos of my elaeag-nus shrubs, also a burford holly. The plants have spots and streaks all over their leaves. It began in September. A nurseryman suggested that it looked like pesticide dam-age, but I’ve not used any. A neighbor across the street has a lawn service company that sprays things. I have other shrubs, but only these are af-fected. What could cause it?

The nurseryman is correct. This almost assuredly has to be some extraneous chemi-cal injury. My fi rst inclina-tion, from looking at your photos, was that it could be herbicide damage. This is ab-solutely typical of weedkiller injury, particularly a type that might be included in a weed-and-feed product. The fact that two unrelated spe-cies (both of them essentially pest-proof) are affected rules out the chance of insects or diseases. Keep your plants moist the balance of the win-ter and early spring. New growth in the spring will probably look a lot better.

Dear Neil: We had the big round circles in our lawn last fall, but it has faded with the winter. What can we use this

year so that it won’t reap-pear?

It would surely help to know what type of lawngrass you have. It sounds like brown patch in St. Augus-tine. The grass turns brown in fairly round patches, and the blades pull loose easily from the runners. This is a cool-season disease that is most active in the fall. Treat with a labeled fungicide in September as a preventive.

Dear Neil: What is the se-cret to growing strawberries in a strawberry jar? We have not had good luck.

The problem with grow-ing strawberries in Texas in general is the hot summer weather. Strawberries do fa-mously where temperatures don’t go much beyond 85 de-grees, and that rules them out as mainstay crops for most of Texas. Strawberry jars merely add to that chal-lenge, due to their limited soil reservoir and exposure to sun and heat. Most people prefer to use one of the ever-bearing varieties and have an ongoing harvest of a few fruit a week. However, you’ll need to move the pot into a partially shaded location where it can have shelter from the afternoon sun in the summer. Use only the very best potting soil, and keep it moist at all times. Consider, too, the possibility of growing trailing herbs or small succulent plants in the jar instead. There are plenty

of good options of each.

Dear Neil: My lawn is looking rather tired right now. What are the critical issues to get it jump-started for spring? Also, what type of grass grows best in the shade? Is it sodded or seeded?

Start by eliminating broadleafed weeds such as henbit, chickweed, dandeli-ons, clover and others with a broadleafed weedkiller spray in February or early March. If crabgrass or grass-burs have been problems in past years, apply a suitable pre-emergent weedkiller in early March and again in early June. Use a quality high-nitrogen or, more likely, an all-nitrogen fertilizer as dictated by soil tests. Keep your grass mowed regularly at its recommended mowing height. Keep the soil moist, but don’t overdo it. It’s bet-ter to water less often, but to water more deeply to encour-age deeper root growth. As for the shade-tolerant grass, St. Augustine requires the least sunlight (four hours of direct sunlight daily – six or more would be better), and it is grown from sod.

!

Have a question you’d like Neil to consider? Mail it to him in care of the Wise Coun-ty Messenger, P.O. Box 149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Neil regrets that he cannot reply to questions individually.

In lawns and sports fi elds, weeds are often the result of poor quality turf, rather than the cause of poor turf.

The aggressive nature of weeds and their pro-lifi c reproductive capacity enable them to invade thin, weak turf areas. Cultural practices should always be viewed as the fi rst step to effective weed control. Always determine why weeds estab-lished a foothold and correct those defi ciencies. If the ba-sic problem is not corrected, weeds will continue to occur. An effective weed-control program also requires iden-tifi cation of the undesirable species as to its classifi ca-tion as a grassy weed, a broadleaf weed, an annual, or a perennial. Most turf weeds belong to two princi-pal categories - grasses and broadleaf plants. Chemical

controls for these two cat-egories of plants frequently differ.

Grassy weeds have joint-ed, hollow stems; leaf blades have veins parallel to leaf

margins, and are several times longer than they are wide; roots are fi brous and multi-branch-ing; and fl owers are usually inconspicu-ous. In contrast, broadleaved plants often have showy fl owers; leaves have a network of veins at diverse angles to

one another; stems are of-ten pithy; and a taproot is usually present. Another group of turf weeds, sedges, have grasslike characteris-tics, but require a different group of chemicals for con-trol. Sedges are character-ized by three-sided stems (triangular cross-section) which bear leaves in three directions (in contrast to the two-ranked arrangement of grass leaves).

Weeds can be further

grouped according to their life span - annual or peren-nial. From the standpoint

of chemical control, the

Through a modest increase in daily activity, most Americans can improve their health. Walk Across Texas is a program that persuades and moti-vates people of all ages to make the most important change: to get started. It is a fun and fl exible way to exercise. The program is simple, free and safe. All you need is a team of eight people to get moving, with one person being desig-nated as the “team cap-tain.” The team who walks farthest “across Texas” will win, but everyone who participates will take home a healthy habit - walk-ing for fi tness.

Team members report their

daily mileage to the team captain, and the team captain reports the individual and team total miles on the following web address: http://walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu or to the Extension Offi ce at the end of

each week by: telephone (940) 627-3341, fax (940) 627-8070 or e-mail [email protected].

Teams are not required to walk or ride together, although they may if they desire. Teams simply pool their mileage each week to work toward “walking across Texas.” Members may walk, jog, ride a bike, skateboard, roller blade,

treadmill, swim, spin and/or run. A large Texas map showing the progress of teams will be in Tex-as Cooperative Extension, Wise County offi ce, and at other various

locations. So dust off your walking shoes

and prepare to join us in this eight week journey beginning on March 15, and continuing through May 10.

Last year, 43 team captains and 347 individuals logged more than 48,000 miles. Walk Across Texas is sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension. A kickoff event will be held at noon Thursday, March 12, at the Wise County Courthouse. Participants may register until Friday, March 13, and begin re-cording mileage on Sunday, March 15. CLAYTON’S CORNER

grouping is most important, because preemergent her-bicides are only effective for control of annual weeds. Annual weeds germinate from seed each year, mature in one growing season, and die in less than 12 months. Crabgrass and henbit are examples of annual weeds - crabgrass being a summer annual and henbit being a winter annual. Preemergent herbicides must be applied according to the expected date of emergence for each targeted species.

Perennial weeds live more than one year, and recover or regrow from dormant sto-lons, rhizomes, or tubers as well as from seed. Control of perennial weeds requires

a postemergent herbicide during its season of active growth.

Effective chemical weed control requires identifi ca-tion of the weeds as to their Classifi cation (grass, broad-leaf, sedge, etc.), life span (annual or perennial), and season of active growth (cool season or warm season). Ef-fective chemical control also requires accurate timing of applications, proper rate of application, and unifor-mity of application. Always follow label directions for a product, and observe all warnings and precautions relative to safety of the ap-plication. Herbicide labels should be carefully reviewed for additional details on spe-cifi c uses of each product.

within the city limits of Decatur. The

inspection results are reported us-

Demerits are only recorded on

However, non-critical violations are

STUDENT ATHLETE

CARDIAC DEATH

Sudden cardiac death occurs when the heart stops beating, and it’s the leading cause of death in the United States. But tragically, it occurs far too often in young people, particularly athletes. Youngsters who suffer sudden cardiac death usually harbor a congenital heart defect, but are not suffering from atherosclerosis, the primary cause in adults. While most of these children are athletes, statistics are highest for basketball and football players. Though sudden cardiac death in children and adolescents is rare, many schools and sports facilities have invested in automated external defi brillators (AEDs) that deliver an electrical shock to the heart in order to reset the heartbeat. If treatment is started within minutes, sudden

cardiac death is reversible.

To grow, birds must eat and drink.

Inadequate feed stunts development and prevents birds from growing to their potential. Since birds grow quickly, if their feed con-sumption decreases for only a few hours their ultimate body size can be signifi cant-ly diminished.

Several factors can cause birds to eat less than they should. These factors are: feed availability, water availability, feed competi-tion, water competition, en-vironmental temperature and personal attention.

Fresh, clean water and feed must be continuously available to birds from the beginning. Order the proper feed from your farm store before your birds arrive. Make sure birds are able to easily reach wa-ter and feed. Dur-ing the fi rst week, place feed in fl at pans so young birds can easily fi nd and eat it. Use chick wa-terers so that water is easily reached.

Later, as birds grow, hang-ing tube feeders can be used. These feeders refi ll the feed-ing trough as birds eat. Keep

the height of the feed trough adjusted to the birds’ chest height. Make sure feed is

deep enough in the trough and that access to the feeder is clear. Pro-vide enough feeder space so that all birds can eat at the same time without being too crowded. The bird should be able to eat with-out fear of being pecked by another

bird or without fear of their combs and beaks contacting other objects.

There is a direct relation-ship between the amount of water a bird consumes and

the amount of feed it will eat. If the water supply is in-adequate, birds stop eating.

Temperature also is im-portant. If the room is too warm birds will eat less. So a comfortable temperature for the age of the bird should be maintained. Feed qual-ity also affects consumption. Birds given stale, rancid or moldy feed will stop eating. To keep feed fresh, store it properly away from expo-sure to heat, moisture and sunlight (sunlight destroys vitamins).

Birds respond to atten-tion. Dragging your fi n-ger through the feed in the trough will stimulate them to eat.

TAX TIPSTAX TIPSWise

Top Ten Tax Tips

1. Gather your records…now! It’s never too

early to start getting together any documents

or forms you’ll need when fi ling your taxes:

receipts, canceled checks, and other

documents that support an item of income or

a deduction you’re taking on your return. Also,

be on the lookout for W-2s and 1099s, coming

soon from your employer.

2. Find your forms. Whether you fi le a 1040

or 1040-EZ, you can download all IRS forms

and publications on our Web site, IRS.gov.

3. Do a little research. Check out Publication

17 on IRS.gov. It’s a comprehensive collection

of information for taxpayers highlighting

everything you’ll need to know when fi ling

your return. Review Pub 17 to ensure you’re

taking all credits and deductions for which

you’re eligible.

4. Think ahead to how you’ll fi le. Will

you prepare your return yourself or go to a

preparer? Do you qualify to fi le at no cost

using Free File on IRS.gov? Are you eligible

for free help at an IRS offi ce or volunteer site?

Will you purchase tax preparation software or

fi le online? There are many things to consider.

So, give yourself time to weigh them all and

fi nd the option that best suits your needs.

5. Take your time. Rushing to get your

return fi led increases the chance you will

make a mistake and not catch it.

6. Double-check your return. Mistakes will

slow down the processing of your return. In

particular, make sure all the Social Security

Numbers and math calculations are correct as

these are the most common errors made by

taxpayers.

7. Consider e-fi le. When you fi le

electronically, the computer will handle the

math calculations for you, and you will get

your refund in about half the time it takes

when you fi le a paper return.

8. Think about Direct Deposit. If you elect

to have your refund directly deposited into

your bank account, you’ll receive it faster than

waiting for a check by mail.

9. Visit IRS.gov often. The offi cial IRS Web

site is a great place to fi nd everything you’ll

need to fi le your tax return: forms, tips, FAQs

and updates on tax law changes.

10. Relax. There’s no need to panic. If

you run into a problem, remember the IRS is

here to help. Try IRS.gov or call our customer

service number at 800-829-1040.

The museum houses artifacts from the prehistoric age,

pioneer era, etc. We have much work to do before the

exhibits are as we want them since the walls and windows

are in need of much attention. The museum has the

“OH YES!”“OH YES!”

It may come as a surprise to many women that about half of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. This poses a serious health risk in that those with unintended pregnancies are less likely to receive early prenatal care and are more likely to smoke, drink, or use drugs. Consequently, their babies are more likely to have low birth weights and be born prematurely. To help prevent these potential problems, researchers set out to identify which women were more likely to have unintended pregnancies. They found that, while age and education are the strongest risk factors for unplanned pregnancies, a history of unintended pregnancy is associated with a heightened risk

for future ones.

Our practice strives to provide the highest quality health care to teens and women of all ages. From gynecologic care, pregnancy, osteoporosis screening, treatment for menopause, and wellness care, our team of highly skilled professionals will provide you with the most up-to-date care. For more information, call WISE OBSTETRICS &

GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are

welcome.

P.S. According to the study mentioned above, teenagers are three times more likely than women over age 24 to have an unintended pregnancy.

City offi cials from Bridgeport and veterans from the city met Monday with Rep. Phil King to briefl y con-tinue discussions and update the representative on the pursuit of bringing a state- and federal-fund-ed veterans home to Bridgeport.

In the past year, the city has pur-chased and begun to develop a 920-acre section of land north of U.S. 380 on the west side of Texas 101, and a portion of that land has been sectioned off for a 16-acre veterans home.

There are four applications avail-able from the state for the homes, and the word from the Texas Vet-erans Land Board is that the fi rst two applications will go to Hous-ton and East Texas near Tyler. Bridgeport is doing everything it can to be next in line for the third or fourth spot in the next three or four years.

“In the 75-mile radius that these homes serve, there are more than 400,000 veterans,” said Bridgeport mayor Donald Majka. “That’s more

than anywhere else in the state.”The home, if awarded to Bridge-

port, will be similar to an assisted living home for permanent and

non-permanent residents. It will be part of a master-planned park, and

“Sometimes we talk like doctors,” Tim Hardee said in mid-sentence, pausing to smile before he continued telling Riley’s story.

Less than a day after Riley’s Nov. 1 birth, he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a condition in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped.

For the last three months, Tim and his wife, Kelly, have spent much of their time at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, hoping and

praying for the progress of their 3-month-old son, Riley.

Those months have been an emotional roller coaster. They’ve waited at the hospital through two heart surgeries. They’ve watched doctors and nurses perform chest compressions on Riley. They’ve stared at their son in his warm-ing bed, tubes coming out of his nose, mouth and veins.

They’ve also celebrated the small things. They love to see him smile, even if it’s just

because of gas. They couldn’t wait to change his diaper. And they waited for what seemed an eternity – two weeks – to fi nally hold their baby boy for the second time.

While Riley’s heart may be small in stature, he has shown a fi ghting spirit that lifts the faith of his parents and doctors. And on this Valentine’s Day, Tim and Kelly hope, simply, for another good day.

Despite two surgeries, 3-month-old Riley Hardee shows uncommon strength
