2 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, July 17, 2008

Dear Neil: I want a fast-growing shade tree and was considering either a Fantex or Texas ash. Any other suggestions?

Fast-growing trees all live short and hard lives. In the process, they require undue care and expense and they end up being liabilities to the property instead of as-sets. Ask your nurseryman for the best moderate-grow-ing tree for the space and conditions you have. Give it good care. It will grow almost as quickly as the so called “trash trees” and live many times longer. Oaks, pecans, Chinese pistachios and cedar elms are near the top of every good list.

Dear Neil: What would cause a tomato bed that has been productive suddenly to be weak and puny? We add compost and fertilizer.

There are several possibili-ties. If trees have grown over the top of the garden, lack of sunlight could be respon-sible. It’s also possible that you haven’t done enough to improve the soil. Compost is good, but it must be well rot-ted, and it’s also good to mix in other sources of organic matter. Finally, you might want to have the soil tested for nematodes. They’re mi-croscopic soil-borne worms that sting plant roots and seriously affect plants’ vigor. Once you determine the prob-able cause, you’ll be able to implement the best remedy.

Dear Neil: Several areas of our bermudagrass lawn died out where contractors washed out their concrete wheelbarrows. How can we encourage the grass to re-grow?

Bermuda will almost as-suredly come back vigor-ously. What they put into the soil was extremely alkaline, but it normally wouldn’t kill bermudagrass unless it caked over it. Be sure all the concrete is gone, then fertilize and water the grass deeply.

Dear Neil: Why would a 12-year-old red oak be miss-ing bark all the way around two of its major limbs? Do I need an arborist?

The most likely cause would be squirrel damage. They have to sharpen their

teeth all the time, and it’s not uncommon for them to peel bark away in the pro-cess. You may be able to cap-ture and relocate them via humane traps. It normally disfi gures trees for a short while, but they usually come bounding back.

Dear Neil: Due to our watering restrictions, I’m wondering how often I must water a bermuda lawn to keep it alive and healthy. Are any other treatments advised?

Bermuda is incredibly tol-erant of abuse. If you are al-lowed to water it deeply every 10 to 14 days you can at least keep it alive. It won’t be very green in-between, but it will survive. No other treatments

are advised. Keep mowing at the recommended height. Letting grass grow tall does not improve its odds of sur-vival. Wait until September to fertilize it again.

Dear Neil: I have citrus trees in pots. They bloomed well in the spring and set fruit profusely. However, about a month ago, most of the walnut-sized fruit dropped off. Do I need to be using some special fertil-izer?

That doesn’t sound like a nutrient defi ciency at all. In fact, it sounds like the trees probably got too dry a few days before the fruit abort-ed. Next year, you might try thinning the fruit so that the plants don't have such heavy

loads. Keep them thorough-ly moist at all times as the young fruit develops.

Dear Neil: How can I tell the difference between Johnsongrass and dallis-grass, and how can I elimi-nate them from a lawn with both St. Augustine and ber-muda turf?

Dallisgrass forms dark green, dinner-plate-sized clumps. It produces seed heads that bear some resem-blance to an old fashioned, cross-arm telephone pole. Small green disks of seeds have black, peppery specks on their surfaces. John-sgrass, by comparison, is lighter green and much taller (to 3 to 6 feet if not mowed). Johnsongrass is usually not

a problem in lawns that are mowed regularly. Dal-lisgrass, by comparison, is all-pervasive. You can use MSMA to eliminate it, but only in bermudagrass turf. June and July are the prime times for that spray. You will have to dig it by hand from St. Augustine lawns.

Dear Neil: How can I eliminate squash bugs without having to do a lot of spraying all over my garden? Once my squash plants die, the bugs move over to the cucumbers. Is there something I can do ahead of time?

There is no preventive. Use Sevin dust around the plants’ crowns to control the juvenile bugs. Once they’re

mature, your best bet is toremove them mechanically.Either hand-pick and de-stroy them or prop a woodenshingle or small board on astick beneath the plant. Thesquash bugs will congre-gate beneath the shingle inthe hottest part of the day.Merely kick the prop out andyou’ll be able to “squash thesquash bugs” where theyhide.

Dear Savvy Senior,Can a person in their early

50s have osteoporosis? When I broke my wrist last month the doctor that treated me told me the fracture may be a result of osteoporosis. Is this possible, and if so, what can I do about it?

Bony Brenda

Dear Brenda,For years, osteoporosis has

been considered a disease that affects only the elderly, but the fact is more than half of all Americans over age 50 are at risk. Here’s what you should know.

Osteoporosis is a bone-thinning disease often called the “silent disease” because most people don’t know they have it until they break a bone. In the United States today, around 10 mil-lion people age 50 and older already have osteoporosis, while another 34 million have osteopenia – which means they are at risk of developing it. But the good news is osteoporosis is both preventable and treatable.

Are you at risk? Most people, by the time

they reach their late 30’s, gradually start losing some of their bone mass, but for women menopause is the time when this process re-ally accelerates. Bone loss for men occurs much more slowly. However, by age 75, osteoporosis is as common in men as it is in women. (Tip: check your personal risk at www.yourdiseaser-isk.com <http://www.your-diseaserisk.com/> – click on “osteoporosis”). Here are the factors that increase your

risk:■ Gender: Women are four

times more likely than men of developing osteoporosis.■ Age: Women over age

50 and men over 65 are at greatest risk, and it increas-es with age. ■ Ethnicity: Caucasian

and Asian women. ■ Body size: People who

are very thin or small-boned.■ Family history: Osteo-

porosis runs in families. ■ Hormones: Low estro-

gen levels due to missing menstrual periods or too early menopause – before age 45. ■ Low calcium: A lifetime

diet low in calcium and vi-tamin D. ■ Eating disorders: A his-

tory of anorexia or bulimia.■ Medications: Certain

drugs including glucocorti-coids (steroids) which are used to control diseases such as arthritis and asthma; some anti-seizure medica-tions; blood thinners; some diuretics; some antidepres-sants; antacids that contain aluminum; proton pump inhibitors; some medicines that treat endometriosis; some cancer drugs; and too much thyroid hormone for an underactive thyroid. (Note: If you’re taking any of these medicines, talk to your doc-tor about what can be done to protect your bones.)■ Sedentary lifestyle: In-

activity weakens bones. ■ Smoking: It robs your

bones of calcium and lowers your estrogen levels. ■ Alcohol: More than two

drinks a day can interfere with your body’s ability to

absorb calcium. Boning Up

It’s never too late to help your bones (see www.nof.org <http://www.nof.org/> ). A good fi rst step in preventing and treating osteoporosis is to get screened. For women, that should start around menopause (if you’re not taking estrogen), or for any-one who has broken a bone after age 50 or has other risk factors. All women over 65 and men over 70 should be tested every two years (for women it’s covered by Medicare). Screening for osteoporosis is a simple, painless, bone density test which takes about fi ve min-utes. Here are some lifestyle changes that can help you protect your bones. ■ Boost your calcium:

Those over age 50 should get over 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily. The best source is calcium-rich foods such as dairy products (low-fat milk, cheeses and yo-gurt), fortifi ed orange juice, broccoli, sardines, salmon, fortifi ed cereals, almonds and soybeans. If you can’t get enough calcium through your diet, talk to your doctor about taking a supplement. ■ Take vitamin D: Your

body needs vitamin D to absorb all that calcium. Ev-eryone over 50 should take a daily vitamin that contains at least 400 IU (internation-al units) of vitamin D (600 IU after age 70). ■ Exercise: At any age,

weight-bearing exercises such as walking, stair climb-ing, dancing and strength training with weights or re-sistant bands three or four

times a week can signifi -cantly improve your bone health. ■ Other tips: Don’t smoke,

don’t drink more than one alcoholic drink per day and limit your caffeine intake to two or three cups of cof-fee, tea or caffeinated soda a day.

TreatmentIf you have been diagnosed

with osteoporosis, there a variety of medications avail-able today that can slow or stop its progress including a new once-a-year treatment called Reclast (see reclast.com). Your doctor can help determine which drug is ap-propriate for your particular case.

So, your doctor has told you that you have high blood pressure. One of the latest di-etary eating plans to help you manage your high blood pressure is known as Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH). The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Insti-tute funded research that supports fi ndings showing DASH can lower both blood pres-sure and what is known as the “bad” cho-

lesterol or LDL. By lowering both of these risks, the risk for developing heart disease is also lowered.

What is so great about the DASH eating plan? Dr. Mary Kinney Bielamowicz, nutri-tion and food science specialist for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service has summed up the benefi ts of following the DASH plan.

First of all, it includes the Dietary Guide-lines for Americans (2005) recommendations for healthy eating of low-fat or fat-free milk

If you were to go car shop-ping and saw a model you liked, one that drove well, looked great and was in your price range, would you care how long it had been on the lot? Probably not. You’d likely feel good about fi nding it and move forward with the purchase.

What about real estate? When you fi nd the right home, one that fi ts your needs, does the number of days that house has been for sale make a difference to you?

Some people believe a property that has been on the market for a while must have serious problems. Oth-ers believe that a house on the market for a long period means that the seller is des-perate and will accept a low offer.

I’m not saying that buying a car and buying a house are the same thing – far from it. I am saying that the time a home has been on the mar-ket is not necessarily an in-dicator of a property’s desir-ability or the seller’s state of mind.

Nothing’s wrong … honestly

Excluding overpricing, which is the most common reason a home will linger on the market, there are sev-eral reasons a quality piece

of property may not sell quickly.

The statistic days on mar-ket (DOM) is the number of days a property listing has an active status in a list-ing service. Normally, the property’s status is changed to pending during the pe-riod between the seller’s acceptance of an offer and the actual closing. The DOM will reset if a contract falls through, but if the agent fails to update the status, the DOM continue to rise, even though the home was ostensibly off the market. This happens, and through no fault of the homeowner, the property may now have a deceptively high DOM.

Some houses are listed be-fore they’re 100% ready to sell – perhaps the seller put the house on the market de-spite the fact that it’s under-going remodeling or repairs. In this case, the home was listed too early and probably won’t show well. The days on market will go up, but after weeks of renovations, it’s not the same house, and it will show a great deal better.

There are also situa-tions where the sellers are not particularly motivated. Maybe they don’t need to sell and are just testing the market. Perhaps they’ve got a price in mind and are will-ing to wait for the market to catch up with that number.

A number of properties sim-ply go unnoticed – obviously a roadblock to a successful and timely sale. Maybe the

listing price is $149,900 and the seller is missing buyers whose searches range from $150,000 – $200,000. Some homes may be tenant occu-pied; others may not be mar-keted well, especially on the Internet.

It’s perfect – where do I sign?

Sometimes property is too specifi c for most buyers. It may have an amenity or quirk that just doesn’t work for 99 people out of 100 – you can use your imagina-tion here. When that 100th person comes along, though, and sees that the house has this unconventional feature she appreciates, she’ll prob-ably make an offer.

It’s all about you Just like any statistic,

DOM information may be useful for overall market analysis, but in any given case it may have absolutely no signifi cance. The bottom line is that, regardless of the state of the real estate mar-ket, there are many reasons a property may linger, and all that really matters is what you think.

A Texas Realtor can help explain why certain homes have spent a lot of time on the market and guide you through the process of buy-ing a home. For more infor-mation about buying or sell-ing real estate in the Lone Star state, or to fi nd a Texas Realtor, I encourage you to visit TexasRealEstate.com.

Dense breasts are those which have less fat and more connective and glandular tissue. These are characteristics that are more common among younger women’s breasts; however, older women may also have dense breasts, especially if they are taking combined hormone therapy (estrogen and progestin). Breast density is also, partly, a heritable trait. In any case, for reasons that are not completely understood, women with dense breasts are at increased risk for breast cancer. Whatever the reason, because it can be diffi cult to distinguish breast tumors against a background of dense breast tissue on a mammogram, women with dense breasts may want to consider digital mammography, which

improves cancer detection.

A woman’s breasts go through many normal changes throughout her lifetime. Such as during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and during menopause. There are some changes however, that you should see your ob/gyn to discuss. To schedule an appointment contact WISE

products, fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods and other foods that are heart healthy and lower in sodium (salt). These foods are loaded with the nutrients that many Americans need to increase such as calcium, potassium, fi ber and magnesium impor-tant nutrients for managing blood pressure plus vitamins A, C and E. The DASH plan is rich in nutrients, protein, fi ber and phytochemicals.

The DASH eating plan is low in fat and cholesterol and features fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, lean leg or loin cuts of red meat, fi sh and chicken trimmed of outer fat and nuts in rec-ommended amounts. When

shopping, read the nutri-tion facts on food labels for total fat, saturated fat and trans fat content, plus ingredient la-bels to select low-fat foods. Select only lean meats; trim away visible fats; broil, roast, or poach; and remove excess fat and skin from poultry. Eat less red meat cuts containing more fat such as the arm (chuck) roast or other cuts with more seam fat cover-ing each individual small muscle in the meat cut. Eat no more than two portions daily, each the size of a deck of playing cards. Eat whole

grain pasta, wild rice and beans for higher-fi ber choic-es. Eat more fresh fruits and

vegetables. Select sweets, added sug-ars and sugar-con-taining beverages less often.

Also be aware of a food’s sodium content. Read the nutrition facts on labels and words on the ingredient listing containing sodium/ salt so you

can make sodium-wise se-lections. Whether you are eating at home, school, on the go, or dining out in a fast food or regular restaurant, keep these DASH meal plan suggestions in mind so you

can help reduce your hy-pertension, your LDL “bad” cholesterol, and ultimately lower your chances of devel-oping heart disease.

ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, July 17, 2008 9

By LUKE CLAYTON

I have spent a lifetime in the outdoors but have nev-er actually sighted a wild mountain lion. I've come close, very close, on several occasions but can truly say I don't remember ever actu-ally sighting a lion in the wild. Mountain Lions are extremely secretive animals but sightings are becoming more and more common in Texas and much of the Southwest, probably be-cause their numbers are on the increase and the human population is also increas-ing; there are simply more sets of eyes scanning the woods and roadsides these days than a few years ago.

Just this past week, I was forwarded an e-mail from a friend that contained a pic-ture of a huge, 260 pound mountain lion that was hit recently by an automobile near Aspermont. Most cats weigh between 80 and 125 pounds. This one had ob-viously been eating very well. A rancher in the area reported seeing a huge lion take down a steer that weighed over 300 pounds recently. Chances are pretty good is was the big cat that was hit by a motorist; there simply are not that many li-ons of this size, even in cap-tivity. It seems the cat was badly injured and had to be put down by local authori-ties. The set of photos of the big cat included a close up of his paw, which appeared to be huge.

I've been fascinated by these big cats most of my life and, growing up in East Texas, I’ve heard my fair share of ‘cat tales’, most of which I questioned the va-lidity. I grew up in rural Red River County back in the 50s and 60s and remem-ber many tales of neigh-bors hearing the big cats that made sounds in the night that sounded like ‘the screams of a woman.’

Much later in life, I ac-tually heard the screams of a mountain lion female in heat on a ranch in Jack County. A friend had two female mountain lions in a big enclosure on his ranch and the cats were about as tame as a mountain lion

gets. I remember watching him take the cats for walks on a leash- and wondering just how sane he and his wife were to put so much trust in an animal that made its liv-ing killing deer sized animals. One night while I was at the ranch hunt-ing hogs, one of the female lions began screaming, sound-ing much like the amplifi ed version of a house cat in heat. The next morning, we saw the fresh tracks of a male lion around the enclosure. I did observe just how un-believably fast a mountain lion can be on that hunt. I harvested a couple of wild hogs and my buddy wanted to feed the livers to his cats. He opened the door of the enclosure, tossed the fresh meat on a little ledge near the fl oor. Both cats eyed the meat with that predatory stare that makes the hairs on one's arm raise. While I was transfi xed by the stare of the larger lion, she made her move. In an instant, she dropped off her perch, hooked the meat with the claws in one paw and in the same fl uid motions, jumped back up to the tree limb and began feeding.

Just this past spring, I had a close encounter with a female mountain lion and her cub, but I never actual-ly sighted them, only their tracks that were minutes old in the soft clay after a recent heavy rain. I'm certainly no authority on mountain lions but I have read a great deal about them, in efforts to learn more about an animal that, to me at least, is the essence of everything wild. On this turkey hunt, I was hiking to a remote section of the ranch, walking along an old ranch road, stopping often to call. It had come a spring downpour a few hours earlier, the rain had stopped only 30 minutes be-fore I began my hunt. In the soft clay, I noted the very

clear tracks of a mature lion and her half-grown cub. I had been hiding in the brush along the road, with my turkey decoy out and

making the plain-tive yelps of a hen turkey. No tell-ing where the cats were at that mo-ment but one thing was crystal clear: they were on that road 30 minutes OR LESS earlier! Later, I discovered a deeply rutted gul-ley with undercuts that traversed the

ranch I was hunting. I'm pretty sure the cats were holed up somewhere along this drainage.

Thirty years ago, on a lease near Antelope, Texas, I had constructed a deer stand on the side of a little mountain, overlooking a creek drainage and little meadow. Deer and turkey were plentiful along the creek and they came out into the meadow early and late to feed. A buddy, John-ny Welch, was hunting with me and I put him in the stand on the mountainside. Later that morning, back at the old camp house, he told me about a big mountain lion he had sighted along the creek and later took me back and showed me the tracks in the sand. I had spent untold hours in that stand and never saw a lion!

While hunting mule deer on Clayton William's West Pyle ranch out in the Trans Pecos country of far west Texas, I met an old cowboy that guided on the ranch. The gentleman was well into his 70s and had grown up in Wyoming, working on remote cattle and sheep ranches. He told me about the time he watched a moth-er mountain lion teaching her cubs to hunt. Through binoculars, over a half mile away, he watched the pen containing about 30 head of sheep. He saw a fl icker of movement and spotted the cats stalking the sheep. He put the spurs to his horse

and made a mad dash in an attempt to intercept the cats before they reached the sheep. When he arrived on the scene, he watched the year old cubs chasing and killing one of the sheep. Ten of the animals had already been wounded or killed. Mountain lions are very ef-fi cient predators. It's said they eat, on the average, one deer per week.

With the boon in num-bers of feral hogs in much of Texas and the southwest, I wonder if all the avail-able wild pork is not one of the reasons for the obvious increased number of lion sightings. My buddy Jason Bonner who runs a hunting operation up in northeast Texas near Jefferson, once showed me a spot where a lion had hidden the remains of a recent kill, a big wild boar. My friend Buck Cri-ner lives on the edge of what has become a pretty heav-ily populated area about 25 miles east of Dallas. A cou-ple of years ago, he watched a mature mountain lion traveling down a heavily wooded strip that led from the Trinity River bottoms, probably a mature male on the prowl for a mate during breeding season.

I was hunting the Rich-ards Ranch near Jacksboro with Randy Oldfi eld 10 years ago. I was in a bow stand about 300 yards from Randy when a female lion walked under the stand from which Randy was hunting. As luck would have it, I never got a glimpse of the cat.

Two years ago, I was in Schleicher County in west-ern Texas, deer hunting with my buddy Sam Hen-derson. Sam told me about a recent close encounter with a mountain lion that oc-curred on his ranch. Seems he was guiding a hunter on a deer hunt and, from his deer stand, heard a com-motion that sounded to be coming from thick cover 75 yards or so back in the woods. After the hunt, Saw took his rifl e and walked back into the brush to take

a look. He found a dead yearling buck with it's neck broken with claw and tooth marks around it's neck. The ground was covered with mountain lion tracks. Sam had obviously spooked the cat from its recent kill.

Another good friend, Rog-er Hill had his deer stand set up in a remote section of woods not far from Lake Texoma. Roger saw a couple of mountain lions on several occasions over a six month period around his deer feed-

er. It was obvious the catswere eating well, probablyon fresh venison they killedaround the corn feeders.

I seem to always misssighting a wild mountainlion by a matter of minutes.I've seen their sign and evenheard their blood curdlingscreams. Hopefully one day,I'll actually spot one in thewild. But, if not, it's enoughjust knowing there's a muchmore effi cient predator thanme roaming the wilds!

CAN BABIES BE HELD TOO MUCH?

Babies need lots of cuddling. They

like to see the faces, hear the voices,

and listen to the heartbeats of their

parents. Newborns can even detect

the unique smell of each parent. Af-

ter being fed, burped, and changed,

many babies simply want to be held.

Parents often ask if babies can be

spoiled if they are held too much.

Many pediatricians believe spoiling

does not occur in such early stages.

Infants vary in how much they want to

be held—some demand a lot of atten-

tion while others can spend long pe-

riods of time calmly sitting alone. Ba-

bies who like attention can be picked

up, worn in a front carrier, or placed

next to other adults or children.

By DENNY DEADY

Years ago they were called “bees.” Today, they’re called “crops.”

They offer an opportunity for women to get together to talk, swap ideas and share their love for a craft. There are still quilting bees today, where women gather around a large wooden frame, talk-ing and laughing as they sew neat, tiny stitches to create colorful works of art. But since 1980, when modern scrapbooking got its start, women are now gathering around tables, still talking, still swapping ideas and still sharing a love for a craft. These gatherings are called crops and they offer as much an opportunity to socialize as to create works of art.

Scrapbooking is now a $2.6 billion a year industry, grow-ing from a $200 million a year industry in just 10 years. It is one of the most popular hob-bies in the U.S. and, accord-ing to the Wall Street Jour-nal, scrapbooking is “one of the fastest growing cottage industries in the world.”

Scrapbooking provides the opportunity to tell a story about a special memory, through photos and journal-ing and keeps family memo-ries’ alive.

Donna Billmire of Decatur turned her love for scrap-booking into a business when she opened the Scrapbook Nook in Decatur nine years ago. Over the years, she has

seen small scrapbook stores fl ourish and then decline as major retailers like Michael’s, JoAnn Fabrics and Hobby Lobby increase their invento-ry of scrapbooking supplies.

Billmire has been in the business long enough to see plenty of changes and the newest trend of digital scrap-booking comes as no surprise to her. As women become busier balancing home, fam-ily and careers, they are look-ing for ways to “have it all.” The speed of digital scrap-booking lets them enjoy their craft despite a busy work and

home schedule.“I can’t see yet that it will

be any less expensive,” said Billmire of the digital meth-od. “It’s good for people who want the beauty of scrap-booking but don’t want to get their hands dirty. But I can see it getting just as addic-tive. It’s so fast.

“It’s just the technology age we’re in.”

Billmire has recently stocked the digital software. She chose Memory Mixer by Lasting Impressions because of its simplicity and because it is user friendly.

“You can create scrapbook pages, photo books, calen-dars, photo cards, DVDs and more,” said Billmire. “The way families are so spread out, this is a good way to keep in touch. You can e-mail books, burn DVDs, e-mail a gift to grandma. This is just so much fun.”

So far, Billmire is using standard cardstock to print her digital base pages, put special digital paper is avail-able.

Embellishments can also be added to the pages once they are printed, a process termed

“tradigital” scrapbooking.“You can add all kinds of

fun things,” said Billmire.Billmire sees more young

people taking an interest in scrapbooking and the digital software might attract even more. She noted a teacher in Chico gets students interest-ed in scrapbooking through a class scrapbook project.

For those who don’t even have the time to create a base page, Quick Mix pages are available where “all you do is drop in your photos,”

said Billmire.Memory Mixer offers 40

Quick Mixes, 200 back-grounds and 1,200 embel-lishments. It gives the crafterthe option of adding music orvideo clips to pages.

For those interested in thedigital technique, Billmirewill gladly demonstrate thesoftware on her computer inher store on Bus. 380 and sheadds that help is also avail-able on the Lasting Impres-sions Web site.
