ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, September 3, 2009

The books are closed andthe donations are dispensedfrom the 2009 edition of the

    C Challenger Charitiesrofessional Bull Riding

event in May in Decatur. The event, which has

drawn thousands to Decaturannually since 2004, carries

the name of J.W. Hart, theOklahoma bullrider who re-tired at the top of his gameto devote time to his family, raising championship bullsand narrating PBR eventson television.

Because Hart agreed totake his final ride atop a bulln Decatur, this years eventt the Wise County Sheriffsosse grounds drew a recordrowd and raised a record55,000 for charity. In theast six years, the event hasaised $276,450, $31,000 ofhat for the Resistol Reliefund and the remainder foron-profit groups and ser-

    vice organizations in WiseCounty.

The event is the brainchild of four local business-men, Andrew Rottner, Roy

oung, Wendell Berry Jr.nd Calvin Jackson.United Way of Wise Coun-

    y is the primary beneficiary

of funds, receiving $154,000since 2004. Since the event isstaged at the Posse grounds, the Sheriffs Posse has re-ceived $23,000 in six years.

On behalf of WC Chal-lenger Charities, it was agreat honor to be able topresent checks totaling arecord $55,000 to our localbenefactors as a result of the6th Annual JW Hart PBRChallenge, said Rottner. We cannot thank our spon-

sors and our fans enough fortheir support of this greatevent. Once again, O'NealDistributing of MineralWells stepped up as theyhave every year since webegan as our title sponsor.Without the support of oursponsors, WC ChallengerCharities could not producethe high caliber PBR eventwe do, nor would we be ina position to provide thefunding we do to local civic

and charitable groups suchas The Wise County Veter-ans Group, Wise RegionalHealth Foundation, TrinityHabitat for Humanity andothers.

Rottner said, It is a greatreflection on the people ofWise County that we are allable to pull together for acommon cause and help oneanother. Even when timesare difficult, that is whenthe support is needed themost and this year was noexception.

I just want to thank allthe sponsors and our fansfor their loyal support andwe hope to see them all backin 2010.

    By NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: A lot of myoses died this summer. When

    should I cut the remaining

    ones back?The heaviest pruning of

bush roses should be saved formid-February. At that time,

youll cut them back by half, making each cut just above abud that faces toward the out-

side of the plant. The secondheaviest pruning we make to

bush roses happens in earlyAugust, at which time we cut

them back by approximatelyone-third. That reshapingserves to stimulate them into

another round of growth andfall bloom. Its a little late to do

that now, so trim them only asneeded to improve their looks.

f you replant with more roses, consider the EarthKind vari-eties that have been designat-

ed by Texas A&M as being themost dependable, care-free

    roses for Texas gardening.

Dear Neil: What is the besttime to plant dwarf crape myr-tles?

In all honesty, you probablywould want to plant them in

the summer, while theyrein bloom. By late fall, most

nurseries will have sold outof them for the season. Manydont restock with complete

supplies until late the follow-ing spring. Your main goal

with any new plant you setout when its still warm is to

hand-water it every few days, even though your sprinklersystem may also be watering

the lawn. Normal irrigationalone wont be sufficient.

Dear Neil: In one part of

our yard, we have more oakroots than we do lawngrass.

Thats also happening in onespot between our house and

the porch. What is the best wayto get rid of these?

    If youre talking about one

or two surface roots that arethreatening a concrete slab,

you can remove roots in thefall. That would allow ample

time for new roots to growdeeper down into the groundby next summer. If, however,

youre talking about seedling-like sprouts coming up from

the roots, specifically of liveoaks, thats a genetic blem-

ish faced by probably 10 or 15percent of our live oaks. Studythem closely around your

neighborhood. Youll see thatnot every tree does it, but a

small percentage will. All youcan do in this latter case is

to get in with a sharpshooterspade and angle-cut each stemjust below the soil line. Theyre

a part of the mother tree, andanything you applied to kill

them would also risk harmingthe tree in general.

    Dear Neil: We have three

    magnolia trees. The one that

is 30 feet tall sheds its leavesmost of the summer. The short-

er 20-foot trees do not. Werewatering regularly. What more

can we do? Were raking sever-al times weekly.

    Its possible that you have

a shelf of bedrock underlyingyour landscape, and its also

possible that the larger treesroots have gotten to that layer

and run out of room. Just as apot-bound plant will strugglewhile it tries to get more nutri-

ents and water, so can a largetree. Or, there may have been

some type of damage done tothe large tree that the others

escaped. There might evenbe a slight genetic variationbetween them. Use a soaker

hose, and apply an all-nitro-gen, lawn food around each

of the trees every 6 weeks

    next spring and summer,

one pound per inch of trunkdiameter. Broadcast the ap-

plications across the soil, andfollow them with a thorough

    soaking.

Dear Neil: I am trying to

landscape beside four columnson the front of my house. Will

Italian cypress grow in partialshade? Is blue Italian cypress

    any hardier? Are there otherchoices?

    Italian cypress and the co-

lumnar junipers all need vir-tually full sun to do their best.

Be especially wary if youreplanting near a young shade

tree, because trees get largerthrough the years, and shadegets much heavier. Will Flem-

ing yaupon holly probablycomes closer to matching your

needs, although it must betrained to keep its branches

from splaying out away fromthe plant.

Dear Neil : Where can I find

an Aloe vera plant (the one

with no spines)?I collect aloes of many types.

Its an especially interestinggroup of succulent plants. Most of them are novelties,

and West Coast hobbyists andgrowers are the best sources.

They use them as landscap-ing accents in tropical desert

situations. So, online sourcessuch as eBay are always pos-sibilities. However, Aloe vera

in particular is very widelyavailable in the Texas nurs-

ery industry. My bet would bethat you wouldnt have to call

more than two or three nurs-eries before you could find it.

Dear Neil: I bought a yel-

low rose this spring, but now

its buds look like they havesome red in them. Could that

be caused by the soil here? Ithas a lot of clay where it is

    planted.

Hydrangeas are the onlyplant whose flower color

changes with different soiltypes, and in that case, its the

soils pH (acidity/alkalinity)that determines the outcome, not its texture (clay vs. sand).

Your rose may have had a

    second cutting stuck into the

pot at the time of planting, orit might be a small mutation

from the original solid yellowcolor. Watch it this fall. Check

the flower buds, too, to be surethat tiny thrips arent feedingoff the flower buds. They can

    also cause discoloration.

    y CLAIRE CURRY

    Morning is the most ex-

iting time of the day for airder, especially in a new

lace. I heard crows callingnd Mourning Doves cooing.

    A Northern Parula, a tiny

yellow and blue warbler, sang its buzzy rising trill

in the trees. Two species ofvireo, both White-eyed and

ed-eyed, were singing hid-den in the trees. Occasionaldwarf palmetto trees scat-

tered in the forest understo-ry added a tropical touch to

    the landscape.Where was I? Palmetto

State Park, where I campedfor one night near the end ofmy 11-day trip across Texas

in late May. This is the lastinstallment of my trip sto-

ries, as I finish up the grandtour near the Texas coast.

ast time I left you neareast Texas at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Histori-

cal Area and Stephen F. Aus-tin State Park. At the end of

the day, I visited a privatebird sanctuary near San

Antonio, where I found thelack-crested Titmouse, one

of my study species. I then

headed to Palmetto Stateark for the night, where

we pick up the story again.found hybrid titmice there,

but the tall trees along theriver and bright morningsunlight made it very hard

to see more than one or twobirds. It was a fun walk

along the trails in spite ofthese difficulties.

I next travelled south toSeguin, where I found abeautiful city park (Max

Starcke Park) along theGuadalupe River. Here I

found a pair of Black-crest-ed Titmice and several other

    interesting birds. My favor-ite was a Golden-fronted

    oodpecker. This species is

closely related to our Red-bellied Woodpecker, but has

yellow on the back of the

    head and near the beak.

Males also have a small redpatch on top of their head.

The range of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker is very

similar to that of the Black-crested Titmouse: it is foundin central Texas and north

to southwestern Oklahoma. In Kenedy, I couldnt find a

park with enough trees, butI stopped for lunch. I soon

saw a Crested Caracara, which is a large scavengingbird-of-prey, being mobbed

by Great-tailed Grackles. Itdisappeared and I thought

no more of it. A few minuteslater, however, there was a

huge scuffle in a small tree infront of my car. Great-tailedGrackles, mockingbirds and

Western Kingbirds were fu-rious at something in the

tree. A White-winged Dovefluttered out and away from

the tree. Then the caracaraflew out of the tree with abig fat gray baby bird! The

mobbing birds continuedto chase it as it carried off

what I believe was a nest-

    ling White-winged Dove.

I stopped for the night athistoric Goliad State Park.

My campsite by the riverhad a family of hybrid tit-

mice roamed through. Theyoung birds were constantlybegging to be fed. While ob-

serving the titmice, I alsostumbled across a patch of

Purple Leatherflower Clem-atis flowers. I had not seen

them in the wild before, soit was a special treat. Theseunique purple-maroon flow-

ers are shaped like an up-side-down vase. After dark

    I heard a Barred Owl hoot-ing.

From Goliad State Park Iheaded east up the coastalplains. I stopped at River-

side Park in Victoria, whichwas also along the Gua-

dalupe River. I found a tit-mouse, a family of Eastern

Bluebirds, and a MississippiKite. The kite was carryinga stick in flight, probably for

its nest. Lake Texana StatePark was very quiet at lunch

time. I was about to give up

on seeing any birds when I

saw a titmouse perched onthe edge of a large tree cav-

ity. It hopped in and out sev-eral times. I finally realized

it was taking a bath when Isaw water droplets sprayingout of the hole!

My last night campingwas spent at Oak Thicket

Park near La Grange, backup in the Hill Country. I

heard an Eastern Screech-Owl singing its beautifultrill as I went to sleep. The

next morning I spent anhour looking for birds, but

saw few. The highlight ofthe morning was an exqui-

site noctuid moth perchedon the public restroom doorhandle. It was stark white

with rich rufous stripes. My final stops were in

east Texas. Huntsville StatePark was beautiful with

towering pine trees. Unfor-tunately, those scenic huge

    trees make it awfully hard

to see birds. I would see tinyspots moving around way

up at the top of the tree andcould barely make out any

details. This is why I prefershorter trees like we haveat home! I also visited Fort

Boggy State Park briefly. Itis located near Centerville

and had very lush deciduoushabitat, with lots of sweet-

gum trees. I heard IndigoBuntings, Red-eyed Vireos,Painted Buntings, and sev-

eral titmice.I was exhausted by the

time I got home at the endof the day. It was well worth

it, though. I found lots oftitmice for my research andsaw so many beautiful plac-

es, birds, plants and insectsacross Texas. At home or

    wherever your travels may

    take you, keep your eyes

    peeled for natures surpris-es.

ADHDcauses problems for children socially,at home and at school, which canlinger into adulthood if untreated. If ADHD is suspected, doctors willperform a medical and psychologicalexam on the child and ask parentsand teachers for the childs history.Treatment includes medication and

The best advice for women who are about to conceive is to achieve

a healthy weight. This may be a difficult challenge when one takes

into account that 55% of women of childbearing age are overweight,

and that about half of all pregnancies are unplanned. In any case,

pregnancy is not a time to lose weight. A pregnant woman of normal

weight (as measured by body mass indexBMI) should gain between

25-35 pounds during pregnancy. Overweight women (BMI 25 t o

29.9) should gain 15-25 pounds. As far as obese women (with BMIs

of 30 or higher) are concerned, an 11- to 20-pound gain is in order.

Underweight women, with BMIs less than 18.5, should gain 28 to 40

    pounds.

You deserve the best prenatal care for your baby. If you are

expecting, or thinking about having baby, seek care from your ob/gyn.

At our office, we care about helping women stay healthy and deliver

healthy babies. We provide high quality care and many services for the

soon to be mom. To learn more about our practice and t o schedule an

appointment, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at

940-626-8008. Our office is conveniently located at 1713 South FM

51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.

P.S. Women who are expecting twins can gain more weight: 37-54

pounds for normal-weight women, 31-50 pounds for overweight

women, and 25-42 pounds for obese women.

8 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, September 3, 2009

    By SMATT

    Writers facing the problem

    of Texas find themselves

    oundering in generalities,

and I am no exception. Texas

is a state of mind. Texas is an

    obsession. Above all, Texas is

a nation in every sense of the

    word. ~ John Steinbeck,

Travels with CharleyI didnt hear my parents

Texan accents until I was 25

years old. It struck me that

    hadnt heard them before,

    and my ears tingled with

    this strange new sensitivity.

    started hearing accents

    everywhere, from aunts

    and uncles, neighbors and

acquaintances. I felt as if I

    had awakened in a foreign

    place, losing myself in the

    sounds and salutations of

    strangers.

I was born and raised on

    the coast in Corpus Christi,

but I do not use the typical

    inflections of the state.

    Coupled with my aural

    awakening, I became aware

of a general truth: I had

    become uprooted from the

    place Id once called home.

For most of the last nine

    years, I had lived and

    worked away from Texas. I

    had traveled to Europe and

    Africa, and along each of

    the sides of the continental

    nited States. During these

    years I often wondered

    about this separation, what

it meant to no longer feel a

    oneness with my birthplace.

    Texas had become an

    unknown land. It

    became the focus

    of the dreaming

    of this wanderer.

    I wanted to meet

    its people

    and walk

    its plains,see its

    parks and visit

    its coastline.

    In short, I wanted t o

    know Texas again.

    As is my general modus

    operandi, I desired a radical

    course of action to reacquaint

    myself with Texas. Books and

movies only take a person so

far. I needed a way back into

    this state in which

    I found myself a

    stranger. I wanted

    something simple,

    yet epic in scope,

    something in the

    tradition of men

    and women who

    came to the region

    without the pretty

    assurances of a

    better life.

    I decided to hike

    the perimeter of

    Texas. The route is between

    2,500 and 3,000 miles long,

my main tools a good pair of

shoes and socks. I could do it

in six months, but to really

get to know my state Id take

    a year. The idea sounded

    good.

As far as I can gauge my

    parents response, this an-

    nouncement ranked up

there with Id like to be-

    come a professional drug

    dealer and

    Ill be va-

    cationing

    for three

    weeks inAfghani-

    stan. De-

    spite their

    reaction, I felt

    strongly about

    my conviction.

    Some decisions feel

    mysteriously right and on

    track, regardless of the sen-

    timents of those around you.

This was one of those deci-

    sions.

    The time is now

    upon me. This Uni-

    versity of Texas

    graduate is ready

    to take one more

    course in Texas

    history. Starting

    in Corpus Christi

    and moving coun-

    terclockwise along

    the perimeter, I

    intend to hike as

    close as I can to

the edge of the state, pass-

    ing through numerous com-

    munities and national parks.

Along the way, I will be meet-

ing you, the Texans of Texas,

    and listening to your tales.

    Ill be walking your roads

and seeing your towns. Ill be

    watching your sunrises and

    sunsets, yet Ill be measur-

ing my progress not in days

but by people met and sto-

    ries heard.

    In returning to Corpus, I

am struck by how much it

    has changed and grown. My

    hometown is not the same

as when I was a child there.Furthermore, it will not be

    the same when I return.

    As I hike around the

state, I want to add some

    construction of my own. I

intend to build a series of

    written bridges that span

    from El Paso to Texarkana,

    from Brownsville to the

    Panhandle.

I invite you to walk along

    these pathways with me.

    You never know what youll

find. A new hike, a broken

    arrowhead, an old friend. If

    youre really lucky, perhaps

youll hear Texas again, as if

    for the first time.
