    y NEIL SPERRY

    Dear Neil: My spring and

all gardens this year havebeen plagued with whiteflies.Summer squash, fall toma-

toes and a nearby hibiscushave all been impacted. Is

there any hope of getting aood crop out of that gar-

    den?Whiteflies in gardens

filled with annual flowersand vegetables are some-what cyclical. Theyll be abig problem one year, andthey may not show up againfor several, even many, years. That presumes, how-ever, that you dont havea perennial plant that is aprime host of the insect liv-ing somewhere nearby. Forexample, old-fashioned priv-et hedges, gardenias andcitrus are whitefly-magnets.

our problems will be madeore futile if plants like

hose are in the vicinity. Youshould probably destroy allstubble from this seasonsarden, probably by thor-ugh composting, and plantormally next spring withhe hope that they wonteturn. For the record, they

ove to over-winter on tropi-al hibiscus plants in green-

houses or sunrooms. Maybeyou shouldnt try to save theplant you have now.

    Dear Neil: What is the

best time to smooth out low

spots in my lawn?Mid-spring, just as the

grass starts to grow vigor-ously. May would be ideal.Use dry brick sand (the kind

you would use to mix mortaror put in a sandbox) if thelow areas are less than 1-inch deep. If you need morefill than that, use topsoilyouve collected somewhereelse in your garden. Dontallow new soil to be broughtto the site for this purpose. Its likely to be full of seriousweed problems.

    Dear Neil: We bought a

    white wisteria three years

ago. It has not bloomed atall yet. I prune the runners

every six weeks in the sum-mer, to keep it in bounds ona 6-foot trellis. Is it the prun-

ing thats stopping it fromblooming, or is the white type

just reluctant to flower? Its more the pruning than

the color. White wisteriastraditionally bloom just asheavily as the purple plants. The best time to prune wis-terias is in the mid-spring,

just after they have finishedflowering (or should have).Prune as little as you can.Strong trimming encour-ages vigorous vegetativegrowth that will come at theexpense of bud set the fol-

lowing year. For the record, wisterias are huge vines

that can grow 30 to 40 feetin all directions. A 6-foottrellis is very small for it.

Dear Neil: How can I get

rid of briars beneath an oak

    tree without harming thetree?

Smilax briars have heavyroot systems and compara-tively few leaves. What

leaves they do have areusually very glossy, andsprays tend to run off themand onto the ground. I haveeliminated 8 acres of bri-ars beneath my pecan treessimply by mowing themdown with a brush cutter, then using a sharpshooterspade to dig any that wereable to regrow. Weedkillersare not a good choice for thisweed. Almost all of themwill struggle to survive themowing, and digging themwill take perhaps less thana minute per plant.

    Dear Neil: Im concerned

about metal pieces in con-tact with two of our trees. My

husband put a band of met-al around the trunk of our

pecan to keep squirrels fromclimbing. Now, the tree seemsto be dying. He also bought a

red oak about a month ago.He tied a metal rod against

it to keep the tree straight. Now its dying. Are these due

to the metal pieces? No. The sheet metal collar

on a pecan tree is a good wayof protecting your crop, solong as the tree doesnt in-

tersect with a rooftop, powerlines, limbs of other pecans

branches, etc. Moisture mayhave been trapped behindit, or it may now be girdlingthe trunk. As for the metalrod and the new red oak, that simply cannot be theproblem. The new tree musthave gotten too dry follow-ing planting.

    Dear Neil: I cant find

any tomato plants in gardencenters, yet Id like to grow

them in my greenhouse thiswinter. Ive heard you canroot them from cuttings. Is it

easy? How do I do it?Its very easy. Simply

take the growing tip (4 or5 inches) from the stem of

a healthy, vigorous plant.Stick one cutting into each4-inch pot filled with a light-weight potting mix. Coverthem with dry cleanersplastic to conserve moisture.Once theyre rooted (usuallyonly a week or two), you canpot them up and put theminto the greenhouse.

Dear Neil: What can Iuse to control a type of clo-

ver (maybe horseherb) thatis taking over my lawn andeven a field nearby?

Use a broadleafed weed-killer (containing 2,4-D)spray, and apply it to vigor-ous, active growth. Do not

mow for several days beforeor after you treat, and ap-ply the herbicide at a timewhen no rain is expectedfor at least 48 hours. Treatimmediately. If it is horseh-erb, it will die to the groundwith the first hard freeze, and you wont get anotherchance until spring.

    !

Have a question youdlike Neil to consider? Mail

it to him in care of the WiseCounty Messenger, P.O. Box149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-

mail him at [email protected]. Neil regrets

    By CLAIRE CURRY

Its starting to feel likewinter to me. Cold north

winds and rainy days com-bined with falling leaves

makes me think about allthe fun winter birds that livehere. Im going to talk about

several small ones: kinglets, warblers and creepers.

These birds often associ-ate together with chickadees

and titmice to form winterforaging flocks.

    One of the most common

f these small winter song-irds is the Yellow-rumped

arbler. It is a light gray-rown color with a streaked

ack, streaked breast, palehite (Myrtle form, most

    ommon here and in the

astern United States) orellow (Audubons form,

ost common in the westernstates) throat, and two white

ing bars. Its name comesrom the distinctive yellowatch located on the rump

eathers, right above theail. There is also a patch of

ellow near the wings. Thisspecies has a much brighter

reeding plumage with gray, lack, white and yellow, bute rarely see that except on

few late spring stragglers. We have a few other un-

ommon winter warblershat stay here while their

elatives head south. Or-nge-crowned Warbler isncommon to rare in the

inter. It sometimes visitssuet feeders or bird baths.

t is grayish to yellowish toreenish, with yellow un-

ertail coverts (the feathersnder the tail) and a darkhin eye line. The underside

an have faint blurry streak-ng. It can vary from drab

o brightly colored and thisvariation can cause it to be

mistaken for other warblersthat do not occur here in thewinter. This species spends

the summer in Canada andthe western United States.

Our other winter warbleris the Pine Warbler. It has a

    brownish-green unstreaked

back, white wing bars, whiteundertail coverts and belly,

and a yellow throat and yel-low spectacles around its

eyes. It is resident throughmuch of the southeastern

United States, where, appro-priately, it lives in pine for-ests. I frequently heard this

species song, a level trill, when I visited east Texas.

Now for the kinglets! Weonly have two species in all

of North America, but bothoccur in Wise County inthe winter. The very com-

mon Ruby-crowned Kinglethas been back in our area

for several weeks. This tinybundle of energy has a drab

olive green body and head, adark area on the wing feath-ers just below the white

wing bar and a white eyering that is widest in front

of and behind the eyes.If you are lucky, you might

see one get really excitedand raise its crest feathers, revealing a brilliant ruby-

red crown. Only males showthat feature. These birds

are often heard before beingseen; their calls are a scold-

ing jjt jjt jjt jjt jjt.The Golden-crowned

Kinglet is not seen as often

as the Ruby-crowned. Itscall is a high-pitched, thin

seeseesee. When you findone of these tiny beauties,

though, you can admire itsstriped face and yellow andgold crown stripes. Like

the Ruby-crowned Kinglet,it also has an overall olive

color with a white wing barwith a dark area below on

the wing feathers. The last bird I will talk

    about is the Brown Creeper.

Just like the other species, itwill hang out with the trav-

eling winter flocks of chicka-dees, titmice and other small

birds. However, it is extraor-dinarily hard to see. TheBrown Creeper looks like

a tiny piece of bark scoot-ing up tree branches. Listen

for its high-pitched seeeecall, rather like a Golden-

    crowned Kinglet but single-

noted (be careful, though, asmany other birds do have a

similar note). Then you cansearch for its tiny silhou-

ette quickly inching up andaround trees. They will often

spiral up a tree, giving you achance to spot them againstthe sky during each round-

about. The thin curved bill, camouflaged streaking and

patterning on the back andwings, and pale underside

will cinch the identificationif you spot one. These littlecritters are just amazing.

We once were watching onescoot up a tree when all the

birds in the woods soundedan alarm and fled. A hawk

flew in and landed in a tree. The creeper froze, and wealmost couldnt see it any-

    the restof thestory.

A significant number of women of reproductive age display

symptoms caused by non-cancerous growths, known as fibroids,

that form in the walls of the uterus. To address the heavy bleedingthat is often associated with fibroids, there are a number of

medical and surgical treatments available. One minimally invasive

procedure deserves mention because it is a good option for women

who either do not/cannot have surgery or would like to preserve

their uteruses (unlike hysterectomy). Uterine artery embolization

(UAE) shrinks fibroids by cutting off their blood supply. Once

an MRI helps ascertain the size, location, and types of fibroids

present, a catheter is inserted through the femoral artery to

introduce synthetic particles to block the blood vessels feeding the

    fibroid.

Your best treatment for fibroids is dependant several factors,

including the location and amount of them, future child bearing

plans, and the advice from your doctor. For further information

about anything discussed in todays column, call WISE

    OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our

office is conveniently located at 1713 South Fm 51, Ste. 201,

    Decatur. New patients are welcome.

P.S. Uterine artery embolization is conducted under local

anesthesia; it takes less than one hour to complete the procedure.

    It seems that everywhere

we turn, we hear about theimpact of obesity on our na-

tion, especially ourchildren. The Tex-as 4-H and Youth

    evelopment pro-gram is working to

    provide high-qual-ity programs that

address the needsof Texas youth andtheir families.

This fall I havehad the pleasure of

    working with WiseCounty 4-Hers as

they prepared to participatein two dynamic foods andnutrition competitions that

focus on planning and pre-paring healthy meals. Both

the 4-H Food Show and 4-Food Challenge encour-

age participants to makehealthy food choices, im-prove energy and alertness,

reduce disease and illnessrisks and gain knowledge of

    nutrients.Major learning experi-

ences are centered aroundnutrition, menu planning, food buying, preparation

and food safety. This past week, two teams

represented Wise Countyat the first-ever District 4-

Food Challenge held inJacksboro. Forty-six teamsof boys and girls from 24

counties competed. The con-test allows 4-H members

to create a dish using onlya predetermined amount

of ingredients. From theseingredients, 4-H members

must identify, prepare andthen present information

related to the serv-ing size, nutrition-al value and cost of

    the dish.Top winners
