By Mila Lira If you have been craving a Little League Hot Dogs with the secret sauce, popcorn or nachos, you are in luck. This year’s Little League season has started a month earlier to accommodate the added teams to the league. This year there were enough children signed up that there are 17 teams in the league – two more teams than last year. The extra month of games means that you will have the opportunity to come out and watch these pint sized ball players get a taste of America’s favorite pastime. The boys and girls baseball and softball season will start in mid April with the annual Little League season opener parade. The Superior Little League has made many new improvements to the field. This year the dugouts feature a fresh coat of paint and there have been new bleachers installed. These improvements have been paid for through concession proceeds and through the financial support of many sponsors. The bleachers were purchased through a $2,000 grant from Warren Charities.

T-Ball Season in Full Swing The Superior Little League has operated completely by volunteers for more than 50 years. Every year the league operates that no child is ever turned away from play if a family is unable to pay so your contribution at the concession stand or donation does make a difference for the league. With the extra weeks added to the season take this opportunity to enjoy the wonderful spring weather,

grab a tasty treat from the concession stand, and support these little athletes and the Superior Little League. T-Ball games will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. one game will be played on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.Dodgers Team Roster:Amaya Sommer, Aaliyah Hernandez, Liana Hernandez, P.J. Superior High School Mock Trial Team did not pull out a win, but equally so, did not lose when presenting their case at the Tenth Annual Pinal County Mock Trials held Friday, March 2, at the Pinal County Superior Court in Florence. The result was a “hung jury” when the Superior seniors argued a First Amendment case against San Tan Foothills in front of Presiding Judge Robert C. Olson and Judge Theresa Ratliff. The Superior High Team argued for defendant ZTV, Inc., while the San Tan Team presented the plaintiff’s case on behalf of Lee Macafee, mother of Sean Macafee, who was crippled when three teens were videotaping a stunt for the television station’s program, “Wildest Wackiest Craziest Teen Video Competition.” Superior’s team held that the television station was not exempt from the First Amendment because the station did not deliberately incite teens to lawless or harmful acts. While the San Tan Team stressed that the television station was totally responsible for the actions of the teens causing the crippling accident. Six high school teams were involved in the Mock Trial competition and all six teams argued the same First Amendment case. Each team received a case overview, courtroom rules, case materials, statement of stipulated facts, witness statements, case exhibits, Mock Trial rules, television station memos, hospital bills, competition flyers and registration forms. Each team was also given a listing of applicable law, relevant court opinions, judging guidelines for each participant and dress code. Each team had to research their own case law, decide on assumption of the risk, and estimate foreseeable circumstances. One of the preparation suggestions was to author a dialog book which would include: opening statement, direct examination of witnesses, cross examination of witnesses, presentation of exhibits,

Superior Mock Trial team learns much about the legal systemaddressing of the court and closing statement. Ideally, each team should have 10 members, but cannot have less than five. Superior started out with 12 team members in November 2011 and ended with half of that on March 2, 2012. All of the Superior MT team members were high school seniors. Team members were: Bailiff – Erickson Calhoun; Opening Attorney – Leandrea Rivera; Direct Examination Attorney for all three witnesses – Eric Smith; Cross Examination Attorney for two witnesses – Leanrea Rivera; Cross Examination Attorney for one witness – Shayna Wickwire; Station Manager – Anthony Flores; Program Producer – Yvette Gonzalez; Dr. Bonnie Braker – Yvette Gonzalez; Announcer – Anthony Flores; and Closing Attorney – Shayna Wickwire. Team Coach was Yolanda Najera-Ewing. Team Sponsor was Superior-Kearny Justice of the Peace Larry Bravo. Certified Sponsor was Superior Unified School District Board President, Cindy Benson. The team coach specifically noted that the help received from Administrator Bill Duarte was invaluable. “He was the glue that kept the team together,” said the coach. “As our only school certified individual, Ms. Benson made the whole thing possible, and the team is very grateful to her,” stressed Coach Ewing. She also commented profusely on Judge Bravo who not only substituted for the coach when she had to be absent, but also toured the team through his court and gave the teams tips that are gained only from experience.

Ewing made a presentation at the school board meeting on March 8, thanking all of those mentioned here and told the school board how very proud she was of the Superior Mock Trial team for all of their hard work and efforts. “I think it was a true learning experience for the students who had to actually present a court case and do all of the research that went with the presentation. Additionally, they had to memorize the information. They did a great job,” affirmed Coach Ewing. Smiles danced around the

By Betsy Quinn The Town of Superior offers stunning scenery nestled in a historic western mining town atmosphere. This weekend Superior was hats off to celebrate mining, local heritage and cultures. In this Copper Corridor town, mining continues driving the local economy. Superior’s 24th Annual Apache Leap Days Festival provided throngs of visitors and locals alike a weekend packed with southwestern style family fun and entertainment. The parade on Saturday showcased community pride and local heritage. Master of Ceremonies Roy Chavez presided over the days events. The Gorham Family Covered Wagon float took first place, followed by the Superior Chamber’s Old Miners float in second place and the Ray High School ROTC claiming third place honors. Other parade participants also included Superior High School and Kennedy Elementary school students, Resolution Copper and Superior Fire Department. The action packed Mining Competitions throughout the day show just how much mining is alive and well in Superior. Miners gave their best efforts showing off their skills in competitions including Sawing, two person team Mucking, Spiking, and Jack leg Drilling. Winners received cash prizes but bragging rights are suspected to be the real purse. All the Mining Competitions kept the crowds’ rapt attention for hours. Other crowd pleasers included a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, performances by Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior and the Yellow Bird Native American Dancers. Great entertainment by Wildman Phil with Reptiles, comedian Brain Kohatsu and a western reenactment

by the Arizona Ghostriders rounded out the day’s fun. For history buffs, authors and historians Sam Lowe and Carol Schumacher gave history talks about local history at the Senior Center. Kozmo the Clown wandered the crowd entertaining kids with balloons. Crowds cheered on the Chihuahua races. The races were all out lively matches, with team owners coaching their tiny four pawed pals to the finish line. For the third year in a row, “Peanuts,” a cute little critter owned by Rene and Paul Reisenger, won the races. The carnival offered rides, games and a House of Horrors that kept kids on the move all afternoon. The evening rounded out with Robert Gibney, History singer-songwriter, and the Marty Ramirez band and street dance. The festival celebrated Superior’s rich cultural history and current day miners, community members, and their families. What a great way to spend your day enjoying Arizona and southwestern living! Solution to last week’s puzzle

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center Jeremiah 2:28 reads, “Where are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble.” The many nations surrounding Israel served a multitude of various gods. God told the children of Israel to not intermarry with other nations because they would cause them to follow other gods. In Exodus 20 He

makes it quite plain, “I am the LORD your God. You shall not follow any other gods or worship any idols.” Reading through the books of Kings and Chronicles, we see that many Israelite kings married foreign women and accepted their gods into their lifestyle. Even the great King Solomon, known as the wisest man on earth, fell into that sin. He married many other women and they turned his heart away from Jehovah

Pastor’s CornerGod. Deuteronomy 4:32-40 explains how to know that the LORD is God. They are reminded of the times they heard His voice speaking out of the fire on top of Mt. Sinai. This passage shares about the miraculous signs and wonders that they saw and experienced, the great and awesome deeds, during their passage from Egypt to the Promised Land. Verse 39 says, “Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.” Various other Bible verses declare that God is the Creator of the Universe, our heavenly Father and the One who rules and reigns from His throne

in heaven. He hears our prayers and through the Holy Spirit, provides guidance and direction for us. Through His Son Jesus Christ, we receive salvation and have entrance into heaven. These miracles and events of provision and protection, are things that man made gods cannot do. They cannot see, hear or speak. They have not existed for eternity. Only the God in heaven can do the things we have seen and heard. That is why we love, worship and serve Him, the LORD God Almighty.

mouths of the judges hearing the Superior vs. San Tan case when they saw that Yvette had shucked her power suit worn when she was the case psychiatrist to don the cap, T-shirt and scruffy jeans of the hip program producer. Erickson made sure everyone swore to tell the truth and Eric impeached witnesses from the prosecution and Anthony made sure all in the courtroom knew who the players were. its case and Shayna drove the teams point home stating, “Unprotected speech is directed to incite or produce imminent lawless action. Notwithstanding the pervasive effect of the broadcasting media and the unique access afforded to children, the effect of the imposition of liability could reduce the U.S. adult population to viewing only what is fit for children!” The MT event began with a Coach’s Training on October 21, 2011. MT case materials were distributed November 14, 2011. In mid November, teams were assigned to

prosecution or defense. January 23, 2012 teams received their competition packet which included the MT schedule, line up forms and final instructions. The team took three trips during MT season. The first was a tour of the local courthouse on East Main Street where Judge Bravo put the students through their paces. The second was a tour of the county courthouse in Florence and the courtroom to be used for the MT. The third trip was to Florence once again to present the MT court case. This year’s MT Team was

only the second team from Superior to compete in the ten years that the MT has been in existence. Superior participated several years ago under the leadership of Resource Officer Paul Licano. The Pinal County Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board (CAB) with sponsorship from the Pinal County Attorney’s Office hosted the 2012 MT. The CAB is a group of citizens working with Juvenile Court Services in Pinal County which raises money to enhance services to the county’s juveniles in the court system.

High school teams participating this year in addition to Superior were two individual teams from Miami High School, Apache Junction High School Coolidge High School and San Tan Foothills High School. Also participating were eight middle schools: Copper Basin K-8, Casa Grande, Imagine School Superstition, Villago Middle, Cactus Middle, Skyline Ranch, Magma Ranch and Mountain Vista. The CAB would like to

sincerely thank the Superior Court Judges who participated in the MT. These judges had to reschedule all of their court cases in order to participate. They have been generous with their time each of the MT’s ten years. They enjoy working with the students and helping them with this project. Participating were judges: Stephen McCarville, Brenda Oldham, Kevin White, Daniel Washburn, Steven Fuller, Boyd T. Johnson, Robert C. Olson and Theresa Ratliff.

In Loving Memory of Jacob Gomez IT WONT BE LONG You said before you died, that I was the key to your heart. But the truth is you were mine. I ask the Lord above, to answer my prayers. That you would come back. But, that wouldn’t be fair. I now know that you’re happy where you are. Safe in the arms of Jesus, without any cares. But I want you to know, that I still love you so. And I’ll go on living for Him, Knowing that His light will never dim. Someday together we’ll be. But, until then, the Lord will take care of me. It won’t be long. That from this world, I’ll be gone. Into your arms once again. Safe from all the worldly harm. Love always, Your wife, Queta. W 3/14 1TP
