Laramie County Community Colleges student media organi-zation placed in the American Copy Editors Society Headline contest for the fourth year in a row.
The Wingspan staff took second place in the student publications category. LCCC is the only two-year school that has won in this competition and had never previously placed higher than third place.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hills Daily Tar Heel took first-place honors. LCCC beat out Baylor Univer-sitys Lariat, which placed third.

and Good play beyond a shadow of a Doubt.
The award was announced at the ACES 20th annual confer-ence in Portland, Oregon, March 31-April 2 and the headlines will be featured in a book spon-sored by The Associated Press alongside other contest winners National Public Radio, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Dallas Morning News, The Philadelphia Daily News and the New York Times.
Erica Klimt, Daniel Martinez, Shari Johnson, Jessica Dawkins and Amber Munjar served as LCCC Wingspan editors and Ro-salind Schliske, Jacob Sherlock and J.L. OBrien served as advis-ers for the 2015 calendar year.
Laramie County Commu-nity Colleges student media organization took nine Mark of Excellence awards in the Society of Professional Jour-nalists Region IX competition.
Wingspan took nine awards, including three winners, which will go on to the national SPJ competi-tion. Mass media major Ike Fredregill won in the feature photography and feature writ-ing categories for a feature on retired chemistry instructor Rich Laidlaw. LCCC multi-media graduate Taylor Snell took top honors in the photo illustration category for the cover design of the March 9, 2015, issue of Wingspan.
Fredregill was also a finalist in feature writing for another story he wrote about retired mass media instructor Rosalind Schliske.
Current Wingspan co-editor and mass media major Cody Fox was a finalist in sports photography.
LCCC multimedia gradu-ate Tamara Rodgers was a finalist in feature photography for her photo story on the work done in the agriculture building titled A little dirt never hurt and in sports photography.
Mass media graduate Erica Klimt was a finalist in in-depth reporting for her
analysis of the LCCC climate survey, which ran with the headline Third times not a charm.
The Wingspan staff was a finalist for editorial writing for a trio of editorials written in the Spring 2015 semester.
The winners were an-nounced April 16 in Albuquer-que, New Mexico, at the SPJ Region IX annual conference.
LCCC was one of only three community colleges to win in the competition and earned more awards than the other two schools: Northwest College, which earned five awards, and the Commu-nity College of Denver, which earned three awards. Two-year and four-year schools competed against each other. Competition divisions were based on student populations, with LCCC competing in the small-school 9,999-and-under division, and in some catego-ries small schools competed with the 10,000 and over division. LCCC competed with Colorado State University-Pueblo, Westminster College, Metro State University, Weber State University and Brigham Young University.
Rosalind Schliske, Jacob Sherlock and J.L. OBrien served as advisers to the LCCC student media organization during the 2015 calendar year.
Laramie County Community Colleges student media organiza-tion, the Wingspan, was honored for the 26th consecutive year as one of the top college student newspapers in the country.
Wingspan was awarded first place by the American Scholastic Press Association in the 2016 Scholastic Newspaper Awards among community colleges with an enrollment of 2,501 or greater for the 2015 calendar year. The award was announced in the Spring 2016 edition of the Ameri-can Scholastic Journalist.
Additionally, LCCCs student media organization was recog-nized for outstanding photogra-phy. LCCC was the only school in the competition recognized in this category. The award was given for the May 4, 2015, issue of Wingspan.
