Traders Celebrates43rd Anniversary!
Its hard to believe that its been 43 years since the first issue of Traders Shoppers Guide rolled off the press. Back in 1973, things were much different. Traders averaged only 4 pages and had a circulation of approximately 500 copies. Today, Traders has moved to the forefront of the market in southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Our most recent circula-tion audit indicates that almost 20,000 copies are picked up every issue. Throughout the month of January, all of Traders display advertisers will be recognized with a special Anniversary Symbol identifying their number of years as Traders advertisers. This is just one of the many promotions Traders will use to celebrate 43 great years of serving our communi-ties. Looking to the future, we are certain that Traders Shoppers Guide will continue to grow and improve. Our experienced and dedicated staff will always strive to make improvements to our publications. We believe that it is the
people in our community that have helped us become what we are today, the most valu-

Abuse of power or perversion of reality?By Logan Ferriera
Two years ago, Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, Missouri. Ever since then ten-sions have risen between civilian and police. People have generally seen police in a light that they were there to protect, but recent de-velopments have seen these certain ofcers in a negative light. This has prompted the outcry of the people and has prompted protest, riots, and disingenuous behavior from people all around the country.
So who is right? Are police abusing their authority or are people simply overreacting to a system that has been in place for years due to a series of unfortunate events? Both sides hold a grain of truth to them, although I lean more to the side of people overreacting to the series of events that have recently unfolded. This is mainly due to a principle known as Media Spin. Media Spin is a reporters or sources biased portrayal: a creative presentation by se-lectively presenting facts to support ideal posi-tions. In other words picking and choosing the things that the reporter or news agency wants to report on. It is painfully obvious when this happens, you get people who seem to have a bias on the situation instead of reporting on facts and statistics. It is a bit ironic that I sit here and do the same thing, but the differ-ence is that this is a column where opinions are meant to be voiced, not actual news is re-ported. Social Media is as responsible for this as any major news outlet by spreading uncon-rmed information and not showing the entire incident from start to nish, thereby causing
an uproar from those who believe anythingthats on social media for more than 5 minutes. But I digress.
It is interesting to note that an ofcers ROE, otherwise known as Rules Of Engagement areon a situational basis. The rules of engagement differ from each police department. The rules for each department are mostly similar andstate that in order to engage a suspect one of the following must be happening: 1) if an of-cer is being attacked or 2) if other peopleslives are in danger.
Adding to that, an ofcers training is con-sistent with conducting himself and treating citizens in a professional manner. So with all this, is a police department infallible? No, there are those who abuse the authority given them,although they are few and far between, and others who may overreact to a situation. Thisdoes not necessarily mean that police forcesaround the country should be held responsi-ble for these few people. Yet, at the same time there is validity to the claims people make. There must be some course of action that can be taken to appease both sides. A compromiseif you will; some have suggested that body cameras could be a compromise or perhaps areview of department ROE.
Regardless of how the situation resolves itself though, there may be some truth to theargument. Police ofcers as a whole cannot be blamed for the actions of a few.
