TWO GOOD CAUSES James Wood Motors has donated $5,000 to United Way of WiseCounty (UWWC) and another $5,000 to the families of Leslie Denison and Becca Logan, the victims of an awning collapse in Bridgeport Aug. 25. From left are UWWC director andpast president Andrew Rottner, Wood sales manager Roy Young, UWWC executive directorMartin Woodruf f, and UWWC directors Susan Miller and Steve Summers. According to Miller, who is Woods marketing manager, the dealership normally sells $5,000 worth of kick towin tickets at the Battle of Big Sandy between Bridgeport and Decatur football teams. It matches that amount to contribute $10,000 to United Way. But because of the hardshipthe fatal accident caused, Wood immediately gave the ticket proceeds to the two BridgeportHigh School students families. Denison was fatally injured.

    By NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: I hope you can

elp me with a weed problem

    hat Ive been battling for

wo years. We tilled in hay

    couple of years ago, and

eve had weeds ever since. I

    pray them with Round Up,

    nd it kills everything above

    round, but new weeds

    spring up within a couple

of weeks. Is there anything I

can do over the winter to get

    id of them?

    Given that planting time

is only a month away forthe earliest of the springvegetables (onions and snap

peas), you dont have timeto do any kind of solarizing

treatment of laying blackpolyethylene plastic over the

garden. Thats not alwaysa perfect solution anyway.

ere it my garden, I would

rototill several inches of ad-ditional organic matter (well

    composted leaves, manure,

etc.), Canadian peat moss, shredded pine bark mulch

and leaf humus into the soil.Starting with a really loose,

highly organic soil makes itso much easier to cultivateweeds out of a garden. Then,

plant in rows so that youllbe able to lay weed fabric

between the rows. Buy thefabric before you plant, so

that youll have the correctspacing. Mulching after yourgarden plants are up and

growing will also repressthe weed growth.

    Dear Neil: My grand-

    parents have a nice fruit-

    ing pomegranate, and they

would like to give me a start

from it. Are they grown from

seed, or how do I get one

    started?

    Pomegranates, like almost

all fruit crops, are not grownfrom seed. They dont cometrue from seeds. Most are

grafted, but pomegranatesand figs, being shrubs, are

grown from cuttings. Theyshould be 4-6 inches long,

and you may want to tryhardwood cuttings in lateFebruary or semi-hardwood

cuttings in early summer.I have posted a great deal

    of information on start-

ing plants from cuttings atwww.neilsperry.com under

Most Asked Questions. If you ever decide to buy a

growing pomegranate plant, ask for the variety Wonder-ful. Thats almost assuredly

    what they are growing.

Dear Neil: I have a ma-ture redbud that is beginning

to get knots on its trunk. The

knots are about the size of

a tennis ball, and there are

    scores of them. What causes

them, and are they a concern

to the life of my tree? What is

the life expectancy of a red-

    bud?

First, average life expec-tancy of redbuds is probably

25 to 35 years. Some dieearly, and a few may survive

50 years. Those sound likeburls. Youll see them on old

redbuds, particularly thosethat have been challengedby cultural or environmental

issues. They offer no directconcern to the tree, but they

do indicate the tree is proba-bly in long-term decline. For

the record, redbud lumber isnormally not very exciting, but the burls develop very

pretty grain that is use-ful in small turnings such

    as pens and knife handles.

Thats not what you want, ofcourse, but it does make in-

    teresting found wood.

Dear Neil: Is it better to

buy a tall pecan tree or a

shorter one, in terms of get-

ting the first pecans? I dont

want to wait 20 years for my

    first pecans.Thats a great question,

and, good for you, for ask-ing it ahead of time. Pecanproducers, who make their

    livings harvesting pecans,choose small-to-medium

trees, in the range of 5 to 6feet tall. Because they are

buying so many trees at onetime, they use bare-rootedtrees. Then, to compensate

for the roots that are lost inthe process of digging the

trees, they cut their 6-footoriginal trees back by half,

so theyre only 3feet tall. Youll probably get pecansmany years sooner by do-

ing that than you will if youplant much larger 10- or 12-

foot trees. If all you want isone tree, consider buying a

really nice container-growntree. Since all of its rootswill be intact in the con-

tainer, it will hardly pausein its growth. Youll gain

    several years by doing that,

although the cost will beconsiderably greater. Water

container-grown trees care-fully their first several years

in the ground. Their originalsoil balls will dry out muchmore quickly than the na-

tive soil in your landscape, and the trees can suffer

badly if you let them get toodry. Youll probably want to

let a hose run slowly aroundeach tree every week during

    the summer. Turf irrigation

alone will not come close tomeeting their needs.

    !

    like Neil to consider? Mail

it to him in care of the Wise

    County Messenger, P.O. Box

    tions individually.

    CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Along with age, family history, early-onset menstruation, not havingchildren, and never having breastfed, having dense breast tissue is a

factor that plays a role in whether a woman will get breast cancer. This

risk rises in proportion to the density of the breast tissue. Generally, the

fewer fat cells in the breast, the denser the tissue will be. Especially

dense breasts may be reflective of increased breast-tissue growth, which

may predispose to developing cancer. Only a mammogram can tell a

woman whether she has dense breast tissue. To compound matters,

dense breast tissue looks white on a mammogram and is more difficult

to evaluate. However, ultrasound and MRIs can be used as adjuncts to

mammography to help clarify the images.

A womans breasts go through many normal changes throughout her

lifetime, such as during t he menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause.

There are some changes however, that you should see your ob/gyn to

discuss. To schedule an appointment contact WISE OBSTETRICS

& GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008.Our office is conveniently

located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are

    welcome.

P.S. Women most likely to have dense breasts are younger women, those

who have never been pregnant, those who had children when ol der, and

those who have been on hormone therapy.

RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES, LLCBy GARY CLAYTONWise Co. Extension Agent

    Last weeks article focused

    on grazing management

    for the small acreage land-

owner. This week Id like to

expand that topic to look at

    multi-pasture/short dura-

    tion grazing to help large

and small ranchers restoreforage and profits.

    Dr. Richard Teague, range

    ecologist with Texas AgriL-

    ife, has been studying the

    benefits of multi-pasture

    grazing for eight years. His

    research on ranches that

    successfully used that ap-

    proach compared the im-

    pact on soil, vegetation,

    hydrological function and

    profitability to the continu-

ous grazing used in much of

    Wise County.

    His findings indi-

    cate the multi-pas-

    ture ranches were

    able to carry many

    more animals, had

    more forage and

    better wildlife hab-

    itat. Animal per-formance was also

    higher.

    Ranches man-

    aged under the

    higher stocking

    rate with continuous graz-

ing had a higher degree of

    soil compaction, more bare

    ground, poorer grass compo-

    sition, more weeds and low-

    er forage production than

    those under multi-pasture

    management.

    Dr. Teague says the reason

    the multi-pasture

    grazers achieved

    the positive results

    is because their

    aim was to manage

    vegetation and an-

    imal performance.

He maintains thekey is to match

    animal numbers

    with available for-

    age at all times to

    avoid overgraz-

    ing and poor animal per-

    formance. He also says, to

    achieve top plant and ani-

    mal performance, the time

cattle are allowed to graze a

    particular pasture must be

short so that only a moder-

ate amount of the forage is

    harvested during the grow-

    ing season and adequate re-

    covery time is allowed prior

    to grazing again.

    If all ranchers will use

    these guidelines, the range

    will improve over time and

    profits will increase.

By allowing moderategrazing during the growing

    season with short grazing

    periods, allowing recovery

    before regrazing and graz-

    ing again before forage gets

    too mature, animal perfor-

    mance can be high without

    damage to your grasses.

GROUP B STREPGroup B strep is the bacterium

responsible for most cases of newborn

    sepsis and meningitis, illnesses

with potentially fatal results. Its also

    responsible for infant pneumonia

    and, though most cases present

shortly after birth, symptoms cantake a few months to manifest. The

    bacteria responsible for illness are

passed from mother to child during

labor. Fortunately, group B strep can

be prevented. If a pregnant woman

tests positive for group B strep, the

attending doctor will start an IV

antibiotic line during labor. After birth,

physicians will monitor the child closely

for signs of illness and, if they feel its

necessary, will test the childs blood

or spinal fluid. Symptoms of illness

    include fever, lethargy, irritability, and

    difficulty feeding.

Rest assured that testing for Group

B Strep is part of the pediatric care

    you receive while pregnant. Please
