Sermon Outline

Tough Choices… How Will You Live Understanding the Cost…part 2 ♦ As you think through the major decisions you have recently made, are they pleasing to God

or are they feeding your ego?

♦ Are you taking your personal goals and desires before the Lord for His final approval or are you asking Him to rubber-stamp what you have already decided because you’re afraid of what

He may say or where He may lead you?

♦ And are you willing to change to follow His will if it differs from yours?

We must love Him above all others

Luke 14:26, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife & children,

his brothers & sisters; yes even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”

The first key is this... disciples have no higher priority in their lives than Christ, not even their love

for their own family.

We must die to self in order to live for Him

Luke 14:27, “And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “The cross is laid on every Christian. As we embark upon discipleship we surrender ourselves to Christ in union with his death–we give over our lives to death. The cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise god-fearing and happy life, but it meets us at the begin-

ning of our communion with Christ.”

Luke 22:42 (NLT), “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me.

Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Colossians 3:2-3 (NCV), “Think only about the things in heaven, not the things on earth. Your

old sinful self has died, and your new life is kept with Christ in God.”

Galatians 2:20 (NCV), “I was put to death on the cross with Christ, and I do not live anymore—it is Christ who lives in me. I still live in my body, but I live by faith in the Son of God who loved

me and gave himself to save me.”

Galatians 5:24 (NLT), “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires

of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.”

Galatians 6:14 (NCV), “I hope I will never brag about things like that. The cross of our Lord Je-sus Christ is my only reason for bragging. Through the cross of Jesus my world was crucified,

and I died to the world.”

The second key is this… “A disciple has no greater sacrifice than to surrender their lives to the

cross of Christ and die to self so that they can live for Him.”

Reflection…

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NLT), “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perish-

ing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God.”
