Unwavering CourageT hese are unprecedented times. In the thick of an election year we are

challenged by ongoing issues of racial injustice and the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Yet history has a way of reminding us of our own resilience and ability to move forward. This month we draw lessons from the women’s suffrage movement as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote.

A century ago, women were subjected to public ridicule and violence for demanding that they be allowed to participate in elections. Those who stepped forward to lead the women’s suffrage movement risked losing their freedom and even their lives. And Black women who stepped forward to march were met with hostility and told to move to the back.

Reminiscent of today, the women wrestled with contentious questions about how to bring about social change without dividing Americans in the process. Their thoughtful and unrelenting efforts to win support state by state led to the passage in August 1920 of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote.

One hundred years later, we remember these unsung Black and white heroines and their unwavering courage in The Vote (page 12). This two-part documentary series from WGBH’s history series American Experience tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in US history. It describes the hardships they faced and controversies of the role of women and race in society that linger even today.

“Women’s suffrage is a story that has usually been reduced to a single page in the history books,” says American Experience Acting Executive Producer Susan Bellows. “The Vote restores this complex story to its rightful place in our history, providing a rich and clear-eyed look at a movement that resonates as much now as ever.”

Visit the American Experience website at pbs.org/thevote for interac-tive features, useful tools and information about women in American history, and see more WGBH programming dedicated to trailblazing women this month on page 8.

In July, we also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act. This landmark legislation prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. More than 50 years ago, WGBH’s pioneering work in closed cap-tioning for audiences who are deaf or hard-of-hearing ensured equitable access to information. Our Media Access Group and National Center for Accessible Media continue to be at the forefront of making media available to all.

As we celebrate our nation’s birth this month, let us remember those trailblazers who have lifted us up and emboldened us to be the best we can be. Thank you for helping us rise to a higher standard.

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.

Jon Abbott

Bringing You the WorldWorld Channel tells stories that humanize complex issues. World shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and fact-based informational programming that help us understand conflicts, movements and cultures

that may be distinct from our own. World’s original content offers a national platform to filmmakers examining issues too often ignored by mainstream media. These emerging and master filmmakers spotlight a diversity of voices, telling stories not heard elsewhere. World has won a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and numerous national honors—including an RTNDA Kaleidoscope Award, a Media for a Just Society Award, two Lesbian and Gay Journalist Awards, a Gracie and an Asian American Journalists Award. Carried by 159 partner stations in markets representing almost 66% of US TV house-holds, World can also be experienced via WorldChannel.org and social media platforms. The World Channel theme for July is democracy, with a special focus on the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Stepping UpTwenty-five years after the end of apartheid, a Black South African mother is training to become a leader in her community. With only a fifth-grade education, Jabulile Ndaba is a leader-in-training with Kopanang, a women’s project that enables women to earn money through embroidery. When the Irish nun who is running the program

announces that she will be moving to Australia, Jabulile and her fellow leaders are expected to take over the management of Kopanang or risk losing it. Doc World/A Growing Thing Sun, 7/5 at 10pm

Homegrown StoriesIn a fragmented time where identity is under scrutiny, States of America asks: How does each of the states we live in affect who we are and how we charac-terize ourselves? In this series of documentary shorts, meet everyday people from every corner of the country who are as different as the physical and cultural landscapes they call home. By looking at several of these stories together, these films begin to portray a mosaic of America’s diversity.Local, USA/States of America Mon, 7/6 at 9pm

Overcoming LimitationsWhen veteran choreographer Tamar Rogoff meets Gregg Mozgala, a young actor with cerebral palsy, his body inspires her next dance production. The only problem is that he’s never danced before. Working as a team, they discover that her lack of

medical training and his limited mobility are not obstacles, but the impetus for discovering the potential of the human spirit. As opening night approaches, Rogoff and Mozgala push themselves mentally and physically past the limita-tions of a disability toward a miraculous transformation.America ReFramed/Enter the FaunTue, 7/7 at 8pm

Unspoken StrengthMeet DJ Savarese, known as Deej, a gifted, young writer and advocate for nonspeaking autistics. Throughout his life, he has encountered people who believed that because he couldn’t speak, he also couldn’t hear, think or feel. Now a first-year college student, Deej insists on standing up for people on the spectrum who are often dismissed as incompetent. Tune in for this heartwarm-ing coming-of-age story that showcases a young man’s resolve and creativity to live a life of full inclusion.America ReFramed/DeejTue, 7/14 at 8pm

Hidden BrillianceAn estimated 6.5 million people in America are described as “intellectually disabled.” This documentary from award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib challenges perceptions of intelligence by examining the lives of three pioneer-

ing young American adults with intellectual disabilities—Micah, Naieer and Naomie—as they navigate high school, college and the workforce. Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper contex-tualizes the lives of these central characters through the emotional personal story of his son Jesse, as the film unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelli-gence testing in the US.

What’s on 89.7 WGBH Online: wgbhnews.orgOn-air: 89.7 HD1 Boston

The Exit Interview: Phil RedoA fter a decade at WGBH, Phil Redo retires as general manager for radio

and local news this month. Redo presided over the growth of WGBH News 89.7, 99.5 WCRB Classical Radio Boston and WCAI, the Cape, Coast and

Islands NPR Station. We caught up with Redo and asked about his time at the helm of WGBH News.

What do you consider your legacy at WGBH?In 2009, WGBH News was a vision and some raw material. I’m proud of helping to build

it into one of the most substantial and trustworthy news organizations in Massachusetts. It truly was the adventure of a lifetime, and I am grateful to WGBH for giving me that opportunity.

How would you characterize your approach to leadership?I allow my employees’ talents to emerge. I am drawn to people who are enthusiastic about their work. You need to be competent, but you can only build something if you have enthusiasm. Everyone who joined the newsroom over the last 10 years was brought in to teach us something that we didn’t know how to do.

Was there an inflection point as WGBH News grew? The first was the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Jim Braude and Margery Eagan had recently joined WGBH, and we were hosting a live show with reporters in the field as the event unfolded. By the end of that day, we knew we had journalistic muscles. In 2016, we broadcasted from the New

Eric in the Evening

From the WGBH Jazz LibraryListen to a unique selection of hard-to-find tracks and old favorites in this special edition of Eric in the Evening. Host Eric Jackson digs deep into WGBH’s extensive library of new and classic music for a mellow mix of jazz greats.Sun, July 12 at 9pm

Hampshire Primary for a week, and our ratings went through the roof. That was our coming-out party. We kept asking, now what? What else can we do? I hope that same spirit will come out of our COVID-19 coverage.

How will your successor take WGBH News to the next level? The next innovation will be on the digital side. There’s a lot of potential at the delta of video and digital. How do we marry WGBH’s production prowess to the digital audiences we’re rapidly growing? There’s also a lot of opportunity to grow our investigative unit. Over the long term, we can compete with The Boston Globe’s Spotlight team.

Where is public media headed? NPR and PBS cover so much across culture and entertainment, education, news and information. The world is going to have a tough time hearing all these voices unless they are very clear. We need to stay nimble and keep experimen-ting. [This American Life host] Ira Glass has said, whatever you do, no matter how innovative you think it is, it won’t break public radio. What’s the worst that can happen? That’s the spirit I’ve worked to cultivate at WGBH News.

A Most Unusual Fourth of JulyBy Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

I t is hard to imagine a more challenging time. Yet amid all the stress, music is there to pro-

vide solace, comfort and companionship. When WCRB did our mini-pledge drive,

I was struck by how many of the comments made by our generous donors referred to how music—especially the emotionally rich music we play on WCRB—has helped them. Several of the comments brought tears to my eyes, and I shared all of the comments with the entire WCRB team just to remind all of us how important the human connection that is music is. Music brings some normalcy at a time when all we hear about is the new normal.

To that end, I would normally be telling you in this column about the fabulous season of concerts from Tanglewood that would fill the next eight weekends. Unfortunately, Tanglewood—like every other concert venue in the world—has had to cancel its concerts due to COVID-19, but that will not hinder our ability to bring you wonderful music through-out this month and all the months that follow. Be sure to listen in regularly for special programs that will, at the least, let you travel to Tanglewood in your imagination.

Even amid these unsettling months, we will mark our nation’s birthday with a July 4 weekend filled with the best of the best. Beginning on Friday, July 3, and continuing through Sunday night, July 5, WCRB will feature our favorite recordings in our library. It’s A Greatest Hits Weekend, only on WCRB. Think of it as a weekend filled with music and performances that bring us together. And that’s in addition to a Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcast on Saturday, July 4 at 8pm, and every Saturday night, as we delve into some classic concerts from the past.

So, even though we may not be able to enjoy our holiday BBQ or trip to the beach exactly as we have in the past, we can celebrate the power of great music to bring us together. Be well and be sure to listen to lots of music!

to live with family members, she herself experienced sexual and physical abuse by a relative.

It took her years to speak about it. “Being silent did not keep me safe. And each time I spoke up, the less shameful I felt,” she says.

Banda found her voice when she came to the US at the age of 14 and was adopted by a couple from Franklin, Massachusetts. She attended Franklin High School and graduated in 2015 from Bridgewater State University, where she majored in journalism. She worked as an intern at Boston 25 News and then joined WCTV where she produces, hosts and books guests for a variety of programs.

While in college, she delivered a TEDx talk about her childhood experi-ences and periodically returns to Franklin High School to speak with the students about surviving abuse. “If you still believe you’re a victim, you tell the story from a victim’s perspective,” she says, adding that when individuals can see the abuse as just an episode in their lives, then they can gain some-thing from the experience. “It inspires me to tell other people’s stories because of that understanding.”

Q ueen Banda, WCAI’s new Weekend Edition host, lives to tell a good story. “I love connecting with people, and I love storytelling,” she says. “I

breathe for it.” A native of Tanzania, Banda is constantly busy in her quest to find interesting and unusual stories in the world around her. In addition to her work at WCAI, she is a producer and public outreach coordinator for Wareham

Community Television (WCTV), keeper of a YouTube channel and author of a memoir.

Cape Codders can hear her Saturday and Sunday mornings delivering NPR and WGBH stories. “Every weekend we get emails or voice messages from listeners who say how much they enjoy her,” says WCAI News Director Steve Junker. “She has a delightful accent, and she is energetic and upbeat.”

Her most powerful story might be her own. She endured a childhood of pain and loss at almost every turn. She witnessed her

father continually abuse her mother. And as the HIV/AIDS crisis gripped the continent, she eventually lost her parents and six siblings to the disease. Sent
