Fathers and VolunteersIve always heard it said that if

you want the job done, find abusy man. This counterintuitivestatement is one of the best Ihave ever heard. One wouldthink it would be the opposite, but when we are not busy forthe sake of busyness, I supposethis is really true.

Fathers are at times some ofthe busiest people in the world. In the past, many men were thesole breadwinner in the family, and they worked hard at theirjobs to supply everyones needs. In their spare time, theyvolunteered with activities likeBoy Scouts, Little League, and allof the events that made theirchildrens lives full of fun andlearning. Whether at home orout camping, dads helpedsupply the peaceful reflection onthe important things in life.

My father was a volunteer, and yes, with the Scouts andLittle League, but he also servedwith the Army Reserves.Occasionally, during training atFort Huachuca, he would bringthe Army Jeep home. There werefour boys in our family, andthere was something about thatJeep we loved - just sitting in it,grabbing the steering wheel, andpretending.

I will never forget going withDad when his 20 years of servicewere finished. I was about eightyears old when my father retiredfrom his work with the NationalGuard. He was rightly proud ofhis service and his work as aschool teacher at CreightonElementary where he taughtmath and science. Throughoutthese years, he served as an elderin churches, and was alwaysthere to support the mission ofthe church with both time andmoney. Dad died five years ago,but his memory is still strong inhis children.

I suppose the old adage, Ifyou want the job done, get abusy man rings true. I knowour gentlemen at FellowshipSquare, father or not, strive tomake this world a better placethan it was before. Fathers Dayis a time to remember all of thegood things men have broughtto life in us. Not one of them isperfect, they know that, but theyworked to make life better forus, their children. In thiswonderful way, they haveshaped us more than we canever know.

When we apply this to theBible, it is our heavenly Fatherwho has formed us in His ownimage. One of the greatmessages of scripture is Godscontinual care and provision forus and all of creation. He truly isthe perfect Father who lives forus, and forms the example oftrue Fatherly love. Following thisexample is our great hope.Blessings, Chaplain Brad
