BRIDGING THE GAP

HOSPITALS & INSTITUTIONS

I am going on my second year participating in Bridging the Gap (BTG). While living in San Diego, I spent several years participating in H&I in a detox facility. It was made apparent to me that many patients were experiencing anxiety and fear of how to stay sober and clean when they were discharged. I often would give people my contact number for them to call me. The calls were few and far between, but my hope was to take them to an A.A. meeting. This planted the seed for me that there was a need for a link between the facility and A.A. I had not heard of BTG yet. When I moved to Petaluma two years ago, I jumped into a routine of meetings the first week I got here. In one of my meetings, an announcement was made about looking for volunteers for BTG. I made a point of attending my first monthly meeting for BTG in Santa Rosa and immediately signed up to be a presenter at Mountain Vista Farms in Glen Ellen. I take my experience, strength and hope into Mountain Vista the second Saturday of every month. It never ceases to amaze me how VITAL my service commitment at Mountain Vista is. As strange it may sound, I often feel a channel of energy working through me from my Higher Power to the group. I often feel a powerful guidance revealing that I am exactly where I need to be. From Chapter 7, Working With Others from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, “Practical Experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics.”Bridging the Gap is not only practical and vital for me, it is one of my favorite parts of my recovery today. ~Susan P.

PIC/PC is the public face and voice of Alcoholics Anonymous. Although we members of this General Service committee only speak from our own experience, strength, and hope, we try to put a friendly face on this message. The Third Tradition tells us that “The only requirement for A.A. membership is the desire to stop drinking.” To the many who reject A.A. because of all the “God talk” in the Big Book, Twelve & Twelve, and Daily Reflections, as well as among our members, the message “always inclusive, never exclusive” must be emphasized—always. The Grapevine recently published its first “Atheist & Agnostic Members” issue (October 2016). Among its many well-written articles, (non-alcoholic) Father Ward Ewing (President Emeritus) of the A.A.W.S. Board of Trustees quotes Bill Wilson (Grapevine July 1965) “Newcomers are approaching A.A. at the rate often of thousands yearly. They represent almost every belief and attitude imaginable. We have atheists and agnostics. We have people of nearly every race, culture and religion. In A.A. we are supposed to be bound together in the kinship of a common suffering. Consequently, the full individual liberty to practice any creed or principle or therapy whatever should be a first consideration for us all. Let us not, therefore, pressure anyone with our individual or even our collective views. Let us instead accord each other the respect and love that is due to every human being as he tries to make his way toward the light. Let us always try to be inclusive rather than exclusive; let us remember that each alcoholic among us is a member of A.A., so long as he or she declares.”Join us in our Twelfth Step call to the public. I invite you to come the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm for speaker orientation, with the meeting at 7:30pm. The next meeting is January 11. I sincerely hope to see you there.~Chris S.

On December 7, 2016, the Hospitals & Institutions Commit-tee greeted new meeting reps Lauren H., representing River Women's Meeting (Guerneville); Gary A., Monday Night Se-bastopol A.A. Stag Meeting; Roxie N. and Lynn K., Mood Swings (Healdsburg); Nick L., Newcomers and Oldtimers; Colin G., Young People’s Group; Derek D., As Bill Sees It, (Sebastopol); Marie T., Women’s 12x12 (Sebastopol); Scott S., Tuesday Noon (Petaluma); Megan Q., Big Book Study (Peta-luma); Theo M., Saturday Solution (Petaluma); Celeste A., Up the Steps; Becky B., Breakfast Club (Petaluma); and Bobbie K., Women's Meeting (Petaluma). Your service is duly noted and greatly appreciated!Would you like to share your gift of sobriety with an alcoholic who is confined? For suggestions on how to do that, please come to the next meeting of the H&I Committee, Wednes-day, January 4, at 6:15pm. As always, everyone is welcome to attend the orientation that begins at 5:45pm. The location is

the Community of Christ Church, 1495 W. Steele Lane, on the corner at Range Avenue (parking is off of Range, behind the church, with additional parking at the ice arena).~Mardi H.

GENERAL SERVICEThe Agenda Topics Workshop (see p. 2) is an opportunity for General Service Reps and anyone interested in the future of A.A. to learn about the annual A.A. General Service Conference in New York where decisions are made regarding the direction of our fellowship as a whole. These decisions are not made by a board of directors or some governing body. The direction and future of A.A. as a whole starts with what lies in the heart and mind of each individual member...you! If you’d like to be involved in putting this event on, planning meetings are being held on January 4,11 &18 at 6pm the SCIF bookstore. ~ Kevin H.
