    Change Can Be Hard

    Dear Church,

    A few weeks ago,

    the TV show Bar Rescue

    filmed an episode at the

    bar around the corner

    from my house. This

    show features an expert

    who spends one week

    transforming old, run-

    down bars that are losing

    money into new, attrac-

    tive, and profitable estab-

    lishments.

    Last year, the show

    Kitchen Nightmares,

    which has a similar prem-

ise, filmed at Ninos res-taurant on Atlantic, com-

    pletely transforming that

    restaurant. I think the

    Ninos episode is sched-

uled to air on TV next

    month; Im not sure when

    the Bar Rescue episode

    will air.

    The hosts of these

    shows are rude, arrogant,

and disrespectful. Theyyell and cuss in an at-

    tempt to get their point

    across (although really I

    suspect its an attempt to

    get their ratings up).

    There are moments

    when for me, at least

    all the yelling and cussing

    is hard to take.

    That being said, I

    cant help but wonder

    what would happen if

there was a TV show like

    this for churches. So

    many churches are strug-

    gling to survive, strug-

    gling to carry out their

    mission, struggling to

    connect with their com-

    munity. What if there

    was an expert who

would come in and(without the cussing and

    yelling) completely trans-

    form the church, how its

    run, what it looks like?

    I suspect that even

    if all the changes were

    good and necessary,

    many of them would be

    hard to take. Change is

    never easy. How do you

    think you would respond

    if someone came in and

said that in order to ef-

    fectively reach our com-

    munity and survive as a

    congregation, wed need

    to radically change

    our style of worship (and

    worship time), completely

    rewrite our by-laws and

committee structure, andmake drastic changes to

the look and layout of our

    building (including the

    layout of our sanctuary)?

    How would you respond if

    all those changes took

    place in one week, and

    you arrived next Sunday to

    a completely transformed

    church?

    Even if we assume

that the changes would allhelp us more effectively

    carry out our mission of

    justice, love, and walking

    humbly with God, I know

    they would be a challenge

    to implement. Change is

    hard. If you can handle

    the yelling and cussing,

    watch an episode of one

    of these shows (perhaps

    next month

    s Nino

s epi-sode) and let me know

    what you think.

AshesOn Ash Wednesday, as Lent begins,

worshipers foreheads are often marked with

ashes in the sign of the cross. The ashes tra-ditionally come from burning palm branchesfrom the previous Palm Sunday. In Old Tes-tament days, ashes were a sign of mourningand repentance. Today, some worshipers

wipe off the ashes before leaving church, to symbolize being

cleansed from sin by Jesus death; others wear the ashes the rest ofthe day, carrying the cross of Christ into the world. The speakingof Genesis 3:19 often accompanies the placement of ashes: You aredust, and to dust you shall return.

Bixby Knolls Christian Church1240 E Carson, Long Beach

It costs approximately $350.00 for the Christmas OR the Easter Cantata.Though we reuse music and rotate music and cantatas, it is still necessary tokeep our wonderful volunteer choir singing. It is about $2.00 per copy of indi-vidual Sunday anthem X 15 copies is $30.00 per week. If we pick 3 new an-thems a year we have spent our entire annual budget with no Cantata music! This also has to include our praise team music, and Improv for God drama andmusic! Our own singers have generously donated over the last few years butit is time we all pull together and help.

So come for fellowship, fun and pancakes! If you are unable to attend feel

free to donate to our music department by passing your donation on to BarbPeebles (me) and we will get it into the music funds!

Anyone notice the new additions to the praise team? Samantha Kobel on Basskeyboard and Grace Shitara on flute! They were great to work with so if youenjoyed them please let them know! We praise the Lord for them and theirtalents.
