    NUMBER 2011-13 SEPTEMBER 20, 2011

Bixby Knolls Christian Church, (a Disciples of Christ Church) (562) 426-0428

    Dear friends,

I love trees. In nature, I love how trees can completely transform a landscape.

A field of Joshua trees can appear playful or eerie; a grove of red firs or red-

woods, holy; and standing in the shade of an oak tree on a warm day is sooth-

    ing and peaceful.

Most of the trees in the city were planted by humans. Many of us live on streets lined with trees.

Trees add a calming effect to neighborhoods. Communities with lots of trees have lower crime rates,

higher property values, and a greater sense of peace.

Trees take a long time to grow. Most of the mature trees we enjoy were planted by previous

generations. We are the beneficiaries of their generosity.

In the neighborhood in which our church is located, there are a number of people and groups

committed to planting and caring for trees, so that our urban forest will continue to grow and flour-

ish. I myself have helped plant trees in two different locations in our community. Planting trees is an

    act of hope and faith.

65 years ago, the seeds of faith were first planted at Bixby Knolls Christian Church. The commit-

ment, generosity, and sacrifice of our congregations founders and early members have grown into

the beautiful ministry we have today.

Now its our turn, to act with faith and hope, to plant and care for the ministry that will benefit

generations present as well as generations yet to come.

The greatness of God rouses fear within us,but his goodness encourages us not to be afraidof him. To fear and not be afraid -- that isthe paradox of faith. -A.W. Tozer

    The next few weeks,

    no one has signed up

    to prepare the coffee

    fellowship.

    Please think about

    doing a Sunday Cof-

fee Fellowship. This is an important part of our

Sunday morning experience. The coffee is always

made by Ken Brown or Jim Hardeman, so all that

is needed is a punch and cookies. If no one is

signed up, Pat has graciously set out cookies and

made the punch and then is left with the clean up.

If you cant set out cookies because of worship

service commitments, please offer to clean up af-

ter church. It doesnt take more than 20 minutes.
