Jamestown and Beyond When we speak of the first

Thanksgiving, we usually are talking about what happened in theMassachusetts Bay Colony. There wasanother group who preceded them to theNew World known simply as the Virginia

Company. They settled in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1609 after a four-monthjourney from England. The VirginiaCompany was a private stock company which included a group of businessmenand entrepreneurs who wanted to make aliving in the New World. They were alsolooking for gold, The Northwest Passage, and were interested in silkwormproduction. This is not exactly the group

you are looking for to build a fort andbrave the environs of early 17th Century Virginia.

Most of you have been to the site andhave seen the reenactment there. What you probably do not know is that over the next 16 years the fort was abandonedtwice and rebuilt a couple of timestheir private stock company had lost money and most of the people lost their lives.

They endured many of thethings our Pilgrims in

Massachusetts went through:starvation, harsh winter anddisease. They had one more, andthat was about two weeks after their arrivalthe natives attacked

Jamestown was named for KinJames of Scotland and England, the son of Mary Queen of Scots. couple of years later he wouldauthorize a new translation of theBible you know as the King Jame Version 1611. It was Anglicanbelievers who settled Virginia.

Congregationalists had landed,as previously mentioned, inMassachusetts in 1620 at Plymouth Rock. The nativeshelped there and celebrated theFirst Thanksgiving with themnow that is diversity! In MarylanLord Baltimore, a protestant wholater joined the Roman Catholic Church, began the colony inBaltimore. John Wesley, thefounder of the Methodists, went to Georgia to help with the effortthere. Philadelphia, Maryland andRhode Island were first inreligious tolerance-freedom, withmany different groups, including, but not limited to, Quakers

    Baptists, Mennonites, DutchReformed and Presbyterians.

Do you think these people would give thanks together in the1700s? You know they did! Can you give thanks for all of thesepeople today? There are over 1,200 groups associated withChristianity in the United States. As Dickens Tim would say, Go

    bless us, everyone!

DID YOU KNOW??Our very own Health Center recently

arned a five-star rating from theArizona Department of Health Services!Congratulations to all of the HealthCare Center staff for their hard work nd a job well done!

How much do you know about our Health Center?

In 1979, a handful of devotedChristians recognized an opportunity o minister to Arizona seniors by

offering affordable nursing care.Realizing the need, they formed a501(c)(3) nonprofit organization andnamed it Christian Care. In 1980, theornerstone was laid for a 60-bedNursing Center and inscribed withhe following:

Cast me not off in the time of oldge; forsake me not when my strengthaileth. Psalm 71:9

Christian Cares spiritual foundationontinues to be a significant haracteristic in its day-to-day

operation and is reflected in our mission statement:

Motivated by Christian love andoncern, we strive to provide quality nd responsive senior housing,

hospitality and health care services. What are some of the services that

re offered at our Health Center?

Short-Term Rehabilitation Services.Skilled Nursing Centers like our HealthCenter provide a cost-effective way toenable patients with injuries; acuteillnesses or postoperative care needs torecover in an environment outside of ahospital. Costs are usually covered by Medicare and Supplemental insurances. The average length of stay for aMedicare short-term rehabilitation is23 to 25 days.

Long-Term Care. Our Health Center also cares for chronically ill andterminally ill patients. Costs are usually covered by private pay and ArizonaLong-Term Care (Arizonas Medicaid).

However, the most commonadmission to a skilled nursing center involves a patient who needsrehabilitation after a hospital stay.Physical, occupational or speechtherapy services are provided by licensed therapists or assistants. Other common admissions are patients whoare having challenges with painmanagement and disease processes, such as cancer, Parkinsons or COPD.
