Tiny minnows test water purity
Its nature and technology at its best. From afar, our water treatment plant looks fairly typical. Yet, after wastewater passes through a complex system of filters and
scrubbers, hungry microbes go to work removing pollutants, oil, and other by-products from refinery water. Once these microscopic workhorses have digested remaining
impurities, tiny minnows check the waters purity. Its an impressive partnership with nature and responsibility we take quiet seriously - day after day, year after year.*

Revealing the inner life
While it may be dif-cult to teach people what can only be dis-covered from within, artists often hope to help reveal what is within by creating works that go beyond what can be observed.
The Tooth Fairy and Other Women from art-ist Haley Hasler, which will be on display in Laramie County Com-munity Colleges Esther and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery Sept. 1028, is designed to do just that.
Hasler was on hand Sept. 9 and 10 for a re-ception and lecture.
The exhibit is a great opportunity for those who love art and are practicing the same style of art. Admission is free.
We wanted to show art that would pertain to the work that students are doing on campus, which is gure paint-ing, said art instructor Matt West.
Hasler, a native of Fort Collins, has been working with this style since before grad school and would use her mirror image because it was not only available but convenient. It came out of an interest
in the human gure, she said. Realizing the work became more and more autobiographical, Hasler became aware of what she wanted to portray in her artwork and that it wasnt all about outer appearance. Im more interested in an inner life that may be more archetypal or even universal through a personal story, she said. Along with an interest in painting gures, she has never strayed from the medium of oil painting either.
Though there are many other techniques she considers to be beautiful, Hasler be-lieves it would take her whole lifetime to master another medium. She said she thinks paint-ing is the most versatile because of its rich use in the past. She added she hasnt even scratched the surface of what oil painting can do.
Art history is another interest that developed into love for Hasler. She said she noticed many paintings of women are painted by men and wanted to try it for herself, as she thought there has always been
a voice missing in the portrayal of women. Rather than painting the female observed, mywhole work has been about the inner life and the inside looking and interpreting the exterior from within, she said. As a mother, she said she has always related to the portrayals of motherhood in art history but also questioned it. Theres a lot of ambivalence in that and the question of who we are, what is the self and how does that contradict the outward appearance.
Hasler is represented by Richard J. Demato Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York, and Alpha Gallery in Boston and has also shown her workaround the country in academic locations and museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida, and the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper.
The Tooth Fairy and Other Women features work Hasler has never shown before including Portrait as Stories We Tell, Nocturnorum Animilium and Por-trait of Sunday Brunch.

Your Hunting Needs!!
HUNTINGSEASONIS
HERE!
The Hunt For Safetyby Craig W. Armstrong
If youre a seasoned hunter, youve probably heard all of this before, but a refresher course never hurts. If youre new to hunting, these tips might keep
you safe. Take a moment to give this a read and avoid trouble on the game trail.
When dealing with rearms, one rule applies above all else: TREAT EVERY GUN AS A
LOADED GUN. Guns are deadly weapons and should be respected. They should never be pointed at something you do not intend to shoot. When you are ready to re a gun, make sure you know what you are ring at. Never shoot at movement or sound. You cant un-re the weapon, so make sure your target is not another person.
Next, consider the transportation of your weapon. Make sure the weapons safety is on.
Ask your hunting buddy to hold your weapon while you do your climbing. Then, have them
hand back your weapon to you. Do the same for them.
Dont hunt alone. The wilderness can be a dangerous place. Accidents can happen and being alone can make matters worse. Should you choose not to hunt with a buddy, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
It is a good idea to wear hunters orange and bring along a rst aid kit. An orange vest and/or pant will allow others to see you more easily. A rst aid kit wont take up a lot of room and its better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it. Speaking of gear, make sure all your gear, including your weapon, is in working order before you set out on your hunt.
Hunting is a sport with a history like no other. It is truly something the whole family can enjoy. Just make sure you follow these safety rules and use common sense.

A Prize Worth Seekingby Doris A. Black
Elk is the second-largest member of the deer family. Known for their mag-nicent rack of antlers and delicious meat, elk are sought by hundreds of hunters each year. Because most elk range miles from the nearest road in rugged terrain, it is critical to be in shape, both mentally and physically, when hunting elk.
As herding animals, the cows and calves stay together with an occasional bull nearby, but its the eldest cow that leads the herd and alerts the others to danger. Mature bulls live alone or in small herds until rut, when the older dominant bulls assemble a harem of 20-30 cows. Elk are more vocal than other members of the deer family. Cows communicate with barks, coughs and chirps, and bulls, though less vocal than cows in general, make up for the difference during rut when they produce shrill bugles and deep, throaty grunts.
When locating elk, a hunter often has to rely on their own senses. Sense of smell often comes into play as elk emit a distinctly strong, musky odor. This scent permeates bedding and wallowing pits, lingering long after elk depart. Other signs of recent elk activity include fresh rubs during rut. Bull rubs are located higher off the ground than deer rubs and are usually long in length. Some hunters keep an eye out for wallows made by bulls to announce their presence to cows. Wallows are shallow holes dug in water-saturated ground in which the bull urinates then rolls in the mud. Fresh droppings are also another sign of recent elk activity.
Many hunters prefer stand hunting, arriving before sunlight and staying until midmorning or arriving a couple hours before dark. Since elk have poor eyesight when it comes to stationary objects, stand hunting is ideal. However elk can detect movement rather easily, so the hunter must be very still and quiet.
To some hunters, an elk hunt can be the trip of a lifetime. To get the most enjoyment from your experience, do as much prepwork as possible and remember: its okay to bring just a camera.

IN ON AT DEAL!
Year-Roundby Tresa Erickson
Deer season comes but once a year. How-ever, that doesnt mean the preparation stops there. For the best results, experts recom-mend hunters prepare for the season all year long, from the moment it ends until the moment it begins.
Before they ever set foot into the eld, hunters need to know where the deer are and should start scouting for them long before the season begins. They should start in the late summer, looking for food sources like berry patches, clover and grasses. They should observe these areas from a distance, preferably from a high vantage point several hundred yards down-wind.
From the herd they observe at the feeding area, hunters should select one deer that they can study. They should watch it in the morning and the evening to get a good idea of its routine. They should determine when it comes to feed and what route it takes to get there. They should determine when it leaves and where it goes afterwards. Some deer may have more than one feeding area.
Once hunters know how their deer moves, they should set up a treestand and use it to spot-check the deer for any changes. They should avoid disturb-ing the area as much as possible, staying out of deer trails and wearing rubber gloves to reduce scent. One whiff of the hunter and the deer may change its habits quickly and move out of the area completely.
Hunters should continue to keep an eye on their deer until the season begins. By that point, they should know the habits of their deer well and secure just the right opportunity to bag it. Then, they can sit back and relax until the season is over and the preparation starts all over again.

Week of September 11, 2015 TRADERS Page 15
Five most common hunting violationsCHEYENNE - Every year as hunting seasons get underway, Game and Fish
offices receive numerous questions about various game laws and what hunt-ers can and cannot do while in the eld.
Some of the questions come from new residents who are not familiar with Wyoming law and how Wyoming laws may differ from their previous residence. Most Wyoming laws are a matter of common sense, but there are some laws and regulations that are violated more frequently than others. Following is a listing of ve common violations that crop up every hunting season.
Failure to Tag - Every big and trophy game license has a carcass coupon attached. And each license has the tagging instructions printed on the coupon. When the animal is killed, simply detach the tag from the license and date the carcass coupon by cutting out the entire day and month of the kill. Sign the license and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. The coupon may be removed during transportation to prevent its loss, but it must be in possession of the person accompanying the carcass. You must detach, sign, and date the tag to comply with the tagging regulation. If any one of these is omitted, then a violation has occurred.
Shooting from a Vehicle - Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally re a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement.
Shooting from a Road - It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall re any rearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is dened as any road that is open to vehicular traffic to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicu-lar to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not dened as public roads.
Failure to Retain Evidence of Gender - Many Wyoming licenses require the taking of a specic sex of animal. There are also season dates in different hunt areas when only a specic sex of animal can be taken. To satisfy the proof of gender requirement the regulation states: in areas where the taking of any big game animal is restricted to a specic sex of animal, either the visible external sex organs, head, or antlers shall accompany the animal as a whole or edible portion thereof.
Trespass - Wyoming law states that no person shall enter private land to hunt, sh, or trap without written permission from the landowner or person in charge of the property. The license must bear the signature of the landowner or agent of the landowner on whose property the hunting is taking place or legitimate proof that permission to hunt has been granted. It is the responsi-bility of hunters to know if the land is public or private. To assist in this, the Bureau of Land Management has maps showing public and private lands. Maps can be obtained from the BLM by calling 307- 775-6256. Many Wyo-ming sporting goods businesses also carry BLM maps for their local area. For hunters with GPS units a micro SD chip is available from the Game and Fish, 307-777-4600, that shows land status and hunter location.
Wyoming laws and regulations can be found in every set of regulations for each species. Persons with questions on these or any other Game and Fish laws and regulations can call 307-777-4600 or any Game and Fish regional office.
