SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Reading: 2 Kings 4:8‑11, 14‑16a A beautiful act of hospitality is rewarded by God. Second Reading: Romans 6:3‑4, 8‑11 Through Baptism we are united to the death and resurrection of Christ. Gospel: Matthew 10:37‑42 This stresses the sacrifices involved in being missionaries of Jesus, and also the greatness of even the smallest act of hospitality offered to those missionaries.

COLLECTION BREAKDOWN: June 16th - June 22nd:

Many thanks to all of our parishioners who respond each week to the needs of our parish and who make their weekly offering a part of their budget. May God bless you for your generosity.

Scripture reflection with Fr. Tim + Pause + Reflect + Act +

1) In the first reading from the second book of Kings, we find an example of hospitality in the care given to Elisha. How does hospitality figure into the life of your family?

2) Imagine your interior world as a house. Where do you keep your worst impulses?

3) Which aspects of your life may require more self-involvement? Which relationships are calling for greater self-sacrifice? How do you know you’ve achieved the right balance?

ASK A FRANCISCAN… When did Saturday night Mass for Sunday start to be allowed?

First, please remember that Judaism in Jesus’ day considered that a “day” began with sunset of the previous day. Jewish feasts still follow that custom. Although some Christians accepted this calculation for their own celebrations, most people considered a “day” to go from midnight to midnight.

In the decree entitled “Christus Dominus,” Pope Pius XII granted local bishops permission to allow late afternoon or evening Mass before a Sunday, holy day of obligation, or other major feast—as long as the Mass did not begin before 4 p.m.

On May 25, 1967, St. Paul VI approved “Eucharisticum Myste-rium,” which made late afternoon or evening Masses more common. Pastors were instructed to explain that the biblical concept of “day” extended from sunset to sunset; later Saturday afternoon was already “Sunday.” The eucharistic fast was changed to one hour before receiving Communion, with no restriction on when medicine could be taken.

As happens with some frequency in the Catholic Church, a liturgical practice already permitted for a particular region can later be extended to the whole Church.

CLEANING MINISTRY

Your assistance is needed after each Mass to

help us comply with the COVID diocesan

guidelines. We are asking individuals to step

forward after each Mass to spray the pew

railings – no wiping necessary. The entire process will

take less than two minutes per section. Spray bottles are

located in the Reconciliation Room.

After the recessional hymn, please pick up a bottle, spray

the railings and return the bottle upon completion to the

Reconciliation Room for the next group of volunteers.

Please help us keep everyone safe by spending a couple

minutes after Mass sanitizing the pew railings. Thank you!

Apostles Peter and Paul Feast Day: June 29th

These apostles share a feast as founders of the church in Rome. Peter, a Galilean fisher-man chosen by Christ as one of the Twelve Apostles, became the undisputed leader of the fledgling church after Pentecost. Paul, a Pharisee and Roman citizen who had persecuted Christians, became after his dramatic conversion the church’s greatest missionary, its “apostle of the gen-tiles.” By tradition both were martyred in Rome. Their adventures are recounted in the Acts of the Apostles, and letters from them are included in the New Testament.

FAITH FORMATION NOTES

Gospel Matthew 10:40-42 In today’s Gospel, what message did Jesus give us? Whenever we welcome anyone and treat them kindly, then we are welcoming Jesus. Remember how at a baptism we all received the gift of God’s Spirit? Because of this gift, each one of us and every person who we meet has the light of Christ burning inside, and so we should treat them as we would treat Christ. Jesus tells us that when we do something for one another out of kindness and love, we are actually doing this for Him. He says: “When you do any of these things for others, you do it for Me.” (Mt 25:35-40) Our reward for being kind and loving towards someone else is a wonderful feeling of happiness glowing inside us. At that very moment, the light of the Holy Spirit is truly burning brightly inside us ! (Children’s Liturgy Book—Katie Thompson)

If Jesus suddenly arrived at your house and rang the

doorbell, what would you do to welcome Him?

What about others?

What does it mean to be a good host or a good guest?

How can you improve on your hospitality?

SAINT OF THE DAY

St. Irenaeus linked the Church at the time of the twelve apostles and the Church of the second century. He wrote and taught the faith handed on by the apostles and preserved it when it was attacked. His chief concern was unity among the churches. Irenaeus was born about 130 in Smyrna, a port town in western Turkey. We celebrate his feast day on June 28th.

A PRAYER FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY

God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory of those who declared that life and liberty are your gift to every human being.

Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong: that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice that belongs to every life on earth.

Turn our hearts toward the family of nations: to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and to find safety only in the common good of all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen.
