Mary, Garden of God

The church devotes the month of May to show their love to Mary by bringing her flowers. All God’s creation is beautiful; but the Mother of God prefers flowers above all of it. In Virgin Mary’s apparitions flowers and their fragances are an unequivocal sign of her heavenly presence. Flowers have a spiritual value in the eyes of God and also in the eyes of His favorite daughter, Mary of Nazareth. Every flower has a symbolic value. Mary is the most beautiful of all flowers; and, in addition, she is considered the Garden of God.

Mary is the dwelling place of God, his house, his gar-den, the Eden where God recreates. Mary wants to fill the house of God with flowers and invites us to be like her. When we become like her, we turn into a flower in Mary’s and God’s Garden. This month of May, Mary wishes to bring us to the Father like an exquisitely scented bouquet; this is why she wants us to imitate her virtues. To be just like Mary and a flower in her hands, it is convenient to know the symbolic value of flowers. Father Luis Gemminger wrote a short book entitled The Flowers of Mary, published on May 1858, in Ingol-stadt, Germany. This book is a good guide to cultivate ourselves as flowers in the hands of the Mother of God.

María, Jardín de Dios

La iglesia dedica el mes de mayo a mostrar su amor a María trayendo sus flores. Toda la creación de Dios es hermosa; pero la Madre de Di-os prefiere las flores por encima de todo. En las apariciones de la Virgen María, las flores y sus fra-gancias son un signo inequívoco de su presencia celestial. Las flores tienen un valor espiritual a los ojos de Dios y también a los ojos de su hija favori-ta, María de Nazaret. Cada flor tiene un valor sim-bólico. María es la más hermosa de todas las flo-res; y, además, ella es considerada el Jardín de Di-os.

María es la morada de Dios, su casa, su jardín, el Edén donde Dios recrea. María quiere llenar la casa de Dios con flores y nos invita a ser como ella. Cuando nos volvemos como ella, nos convertimos en una flor en el Jardín de María y Dios. Este mes de mayo, María desea llevarnos al Padre como un ramo exquisitamente perfumado; esta es la razón por la que quiere que imitemos sus virtudes. Para ser como María y una flor en sus manos, es con-veniente conocer el valor simbólico de las flores. El padre Luis Gemminger escribió un breve libro titu-lado Las flores de María, publicado en mayo de 1858, en Ingolstadt, Alemania. Este libro es una buena guía para cultivarnos a nosotros mismos como flores en las manos de la Madre de Dios.

This Month’s Liturgy at a Glance The gospels during the Sundays in May, in the season of Easter, represent a progressive teaching of what it means to be disciples followers of Christ. In every Sunday of this month there is clear emphasis on the personal relationship with a living God who loves each person individually. We then move on to reflect on the ecclesial community. The readings for the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord are centered on the Christian mission to announce and spread the Good News, with firm promise of the Spirit to come. This way, at the time of Pentecost, the apostles go out full of the Holy Spirit, sent as Jesus was sent, to proclaim that Good News of the reign of God. In the Sunday of the Most Holy Trinity, this topic is repeated with an emphasis on the Baptism and the authority of the apos-tles for the forgiveness of sins. May, moreover, is the Marian month par excellence. The traditions of May Altars, the pil-grimages to Marian shrines, and the coronation of the Virgin offer many catechetical oppor-tunities for children and adults. The Argentinean community celebrates the feast of their, patroness, Our Lady of Lujan, on May 8. The feast days of St. Isidore, patron saint of peasants and farmers, and St. Mariana de Paredes, first Ecuadorian saint, are also important moments in the liturgy and prayers of this month; and, of course, there is Mother’s Day, so important in our Hispanic communities, for the enormous respect and veneration we feel for the mothers in our culture.

La Liturgia de este mes de un vistazo

Los evangelios durante los domingos de mayo, en la temporada de Pascua, representan una enseñanza progresiva de lo que significa ser discípulos seguidores de Cristo. En todos los do-mingos de este mes hay un claro énfasis en la relación personal con un Dios viviente que ama a cada persona individualmente. Luego pasamos a reflexionar sobre la comunidad eclesial. Las lecturas para la solemnidad de la Ascensión del Señor se centran en la misión cristiana de anunciar y difundir las Buenas Nuevas, con la firme promesa del Espíritu venidero. De es-ta manera, en el momento de Pentecostés, los apóstoles salen llenos del Espíritu Santo, en-viados como Jesús fue enviado, para proclamar las Buenas Nuevas del reino de Dios. En el domingo de la Santísima Trinidad, este tema se repite con énfasis en el Bautismo y la autori-dad de los apóstoles para el perdón de los pecados. Mayo, además, es el mes mariano por excelencia. Las tradiciones de los altares de mayo, las peregrinaciones a los santuarios marianos y la coronación de la Virgen ofrecen muchas opor-tunidades de catequesis para niños y adultos. La comunidad argentina celebra la fiesta de su patrona, Nuestra Señora de Luján, el 8 de mayo. Primer Domingo de Mayo Nuestra Señora de Araceli

Según cuenta la tradición, el mar-qués de Comares y señor de Lucena Luis Fernández de Córdova y Pache-co fue a Roma como enviado especial de Felipe II, a principios de 1562. Allí quedó embelesado por la belleza de la Madonna di Ara Coeli (Nuestra Se-ñora del Altar del Cielo), Copatrona de Roma, al punto de que decidió en-cargar y llevarse consigo una réplica

de la imagen, bajo la advocación de Araceli.

En el viaje de vuelta a España, cuando el cortejo del Marqués se aproximaba a Lucena por el viejo camino de Granada, se desató una terrible tormenta que dispersó a la comitiva, per-diéndose en la espesura de la sierra. Al día siguiente, el caba-llo que portaba la imagen fue hallado echado en la cumbre serrana. Los esfuerzos para que el animal se levantara y po-der continuar la marcha fueron inútiles. Esto hizo que pensa-ran que la Santísima Virgen quería que se le edificara un em-pleo en aquel sitio; así que, allí mismo se procedió a cons-truirle su primera y provisional ermita. Nuestra Señora de Araceli fue declarada Patrona y Protectora de Lucena el 27 de abril de 1562. Al año siguiente se constituyó la Cofradía y comenzó a celebrarse su fiesta el primer domingo de mayo de cada año, tradición que ha permanecido viva desde entonces.

According to tradition, the marquis of Comares and lord of Lucena, Luis Fernández de Córdoba y Pacheco went to Rome as a special messenger of Philip II, in early 1562. There he was captivated by the beauty of the Madonna di Ara Coeli (Our Lady of

the Altar of Heaven), Copatroness of Rome, to the point that he decided to commission and bring with him a replica of the image, under the advocation of Araceli.

During the return trip to Spain, when the Marquis ‘court ap-proached Lucena by the old road from Granada, a terrible storm let loose dispersing the party, which got lost in the thick of the mountains. The next day, the horse that was carrying the image was found lying down at the mountain peak. The efforts to make the animal get up and able to continue the journey were useless. This made them think that the Most Ho-ly Virgin wanted them to construct a temple in that place; and so, right there they proceeded to construct for her a first and provisional hermitage. Our Lady of Araceli was declared Pa-troness and Protector of Lucena on April 27th, 1562. The next year the Guild was constituted and they began to celebrate her feast on the first Sunday of May each year, a tradition that has remained alive ever since.
