Issue : 180 4 December, 2019

Never ending woesThe recent hike in the prices of essential commodities like

food grains, fruits and now onions and other vegetables havedepressed the sentiments of the masses. Ironically, even thosewelfare sectors which are considered noble and essential likeeducation and medical facilities have become far too expensive, crippling even the average middle class families.

To some extent, the rise in prices is unavoidable due to vary-ing demand and supply situation vis-a-vis rapidly increasing pop-ulation in India. Unfavourable weather conditions also result inprice hike. Further, lack of warehousing facilities, cold storag-es also result in the post harvest losses. However, more thananything else, the major reason for rising prices is lack of anytimely effective measures taken by the government departmentsto check malpractices of unscrupulous traders who create arti-ficial shortages and charge exorbitant prices. Moreover, in In-dia, inflation or price rise is not just an economic concept butthey are also a political tool, often used by the opposition par-ties to launch attack on the ruling government.

Today, to provide even the basic education to their wardshas become a Herculean task for an average man. It has be-come almost impossible for many parents to muster the hugesums which are often demanded as donations by many schools. In the face of strict orders by the government, the word dona-tion has now been toned down and new words like ‘deposits’ or‘charities’ have been coined which ultimately mean one and thesame thing- drain of finances of the common man.

Similarly, over the past few years, the prices of medicineshave steadily gone up, while the medical facilities have woeful-ly deteriorated. Even for the treatment of common ailment quitea large amount is spent on medicines while the treatment ofdeadly diseases will soon become the privilege of very few.

A slight rise in prices is not a bad thing. It accounts for thegrowth in economy rise in employment, better scales for work-ers etc. However, sudden and acute rise in prices causes an all-round spiral effect on prices that makes the life of common peo-ple miserable. There is a rippling effect resulting in an overallrecession, sluggish economy and black marketing.

It is high time that the government plans a regular and aneffective system of maintaining control on rising prices of atleast essential commodities and life saving drugs, to offer somerelief to a common man from this increasing burden of risingprices. Parties after parties assume power with a pledge to bringan end to the spiralling prices as their main electoral plank. Butso far, none seem to know the reason or have done anything inthis regard other than blaming the previous government for theunfortunate price situation. If prices of essential commoditiescontinue to rise unchecked, it will not be long before a largesection of the society will find their place below the poverty linegraph.

Alternatives to plastics

The greatest man-made disaster towardsgreen environmentcomes from useof plastic, especiallythe thin film variety. This writer while tour-ing vast areas of South-ern India, I was pleas-antly surprised to seethe strict enforcementof plastic ban. Duringmy visit to Maha-baleshwar, Auranga-bad, Pune last year. Ihave noticed aware-ness about ill effects ofplastic. It is hearteningto note that by andlarge India has becomea c t i v ein banning plastic totally.

Partial ban on plas-tic bags that several lo-cal bodies in the coun-try implemented at var-ious stages has fallenflat so far primarilydue tofaulty implementation.Secondly, the non-availability of feasiblealternatives has beendissuading administra-tors from opting for acomplete ban. Cloth isthe next choice, thoughthe non-woven bagsthat pass off as clothbags in most shopsthese days are equallyor even more danger-ous than plastic bags.

Plastic bags play anegative role in chock-ing the drainage sys-tem. Reuse old poly-thene bags. Make sureyou do not burn poly-thene bags as theycause a lot of pollution. With so many options, finding the right alter-native for plastic carrybags is a tricky matterand only large-scaleawareness at the grassroot level can ensurethat another hazard-ous material does notsubstitute plastic.

Though paper is thefirst option, it cannot becounted as an environ-

ment-friendly optionconsidering the large-scale destruction oftrees for paper pulpand also because theycannot hold muchweight. Though recy-cled paper bags havebecome a trend, com-mon people may notfind them pocket-friendly. Up-cycled pa-per bags using newspa-pers may be used forpurposes other thanpackaging liquid andsemi liquid products.

The third option isbiodegradable plastic thatcomes in several vari-eties. There are starch-based bio plastics thatare soluble in hot wa-ter. There is also com-postable plastic thatdisintegrates and joinsthe soil within 90 to 180

days. Plastic bags, thermocol, disposablecups and plates, cut-lery, non-wovenpolypropylene bags, plastic pouches andpackaging areall banned.

Bamboo is one of thelargest members of thegrass family and is thefastest growing woodyplant on the planet. Itsgrowth rate varies ac-cording to the soil andclimate, and is bestknown as a major foodsource for pandas.Bamboo is also used forculinary and medicinalpurposes in manyparts of the world, aswell for constructionmaterials, furniture, textiles, musical in-struments, bicycles, clothing and more. Asa packaging material, bamboo is strong, du-rable and sustainable.

It is one of the moreremarkable naturalmaterials available tous. The Economist re-cently quoted that bam-boo is literally, thegreen equivalentof plastics. This, be-cause it is renewableand low-carbon. It alsosaid bamboo is nowpart and parcel of ourpackaging material.

There are plenty ofbiodegradable and non-petroleum based plas-tic alternatives, butmany do not providethe lightweight, dura-bility, or convenienceof plastics. But, thereis one product thatseems to be on the riseas a sustainable andbiodegradable alterna-tive to plastic. Bam-boo Fiber Composites

are a result of mixingbamboo fiber into apolymer matrix, res-ins, or glue, resultingin a lightweight, biode-gradable plastic alter-native. The new pro-cesses used in the man-ufacturing of bamboofiber composite materi-als recently becamemore eco-friendly andorganic too. The newprocessing methods aredone completely me-chanically, rather thanwith harsh chemicals.

Bamboo fiber alsohas several advantag-es over other naturalplant based compos-ites. For one it is thefastest growing woodyplant in the world. Cer-tain species have beenknown to grow up to 35inches in a single day. The second advantage

Everything goingon in our life ispredominantly drivenby two types ofcommunications. Oneis the communicationwith own self and theother is what wecommunicate withothers. As a psycholo-gist, I was blessedwith an opportunityto be a member of aglobal research teamand worked to findthe impact of commu-nication in a person’slife. As a team wespoke to all types ofpeople :• Academically very

qualified andabsolutely illiter-ate.

• Highly rich andhighly influentialto people fromslums.

• Absolutely physi-cally strong tochallenged anddisabled.People came out

with various answersto ourquestions. Manypassionate Physiolo-gists, Philosophers,Doctors and greatthinkers contributedimmensely. Theoutcome could besummarized as peoplecommunicate morethan 90 % with ownselfand communicationwith others is found tobe less than 10%.

It is confirmed, without any doubt, that we must under-stand with totalclarity the importanceof communication ofwhat we do 24 hoursnonstop within ourown self. It was suchan awakening learn-ing to also know thatwhat we speak toothers have alreadybeen spoken within

Communication is Life Line (Part 1)

own self multipletimes.

It means peoplewho are found con-stantly complaining, sad or crying arecommunicatingwithin own self thatthey have no joys inlife. On the contrarypeople who are abso-lutely fine, enjoyinglife and are spreadinghappiness, love, knowledge are com-municating the sameemotions within ownself. Hence if we haveto change our life weneed to look into thetype of communicationgoing on 24 hourswithin own self (manytimes the internalcommination isliterally unknown tothe self)

Another importantprinciple states“Manasa VachaKarmana” whichmeans inHindi ”Mann se,Vacchan se ya Karmse” (because of ourthoughts speech andactions) we shouldnever damage our ownself.

Negative thoughtsmake our speechnegative leading tonegative actions andnegative results. Ourinnermost thoughts, speech and actionsshould always be filledwith great power. Ihave successfullyhelped many peoplewho have gonethrough bad experi-ences in life bycoaching them inchanging their innercommunication usingvarious powerfulproven tools whichhas helped them tolead a fulfilling life. Tosummarize, the firststep to be taken tobring about a changein our life is we needto choose a mentorwho will help us tomake our life goaloriented and full ofhappiness. Summaryto understand:• Communication

within self is thecreator of mentalhealth and impactsself-concept life-

long.• If a person is not

mentally feeling okor is stressed thenit will be of greathelp to get aninsight on theinternal communi-cation going onwithin self.

• It is not alwaysabout positivethoughts it is moreto do with practicaland healingthoughts.

• Our internalcommunicationdecides how we feelabout own self, rate own self andunderstand deserv-ability which endsup impactingeverything we doin our life.Learning about

internal communica-tion is a complex anda lifelong process.During childhoodpeople who have gonethrough negative andpoor internal commu-nication process anddid not get timely helpand grew up as adultsmay remain negativethroughout their life.

The key to successand make life easier isto work always undera mentor with openmind and with awillingness to trans-form own life.

Radiant, Rapturous & Resplendent Rameswaramsins that he might have committed during hiswar against the demon-king Ravana in SriLanka. According to the Puranas , upon the ad-vice of sages, Rama along with his wife Sita andhis brother Lakshmana, installed and worshippedthe lingam (an iconic symbol of Shiva) here toexpiate the sin of Brahmahatya incurred whilekilling of the Brahmin Ravana To worship Shiva,Rama wanted to have a lingam and directed histrusted lieutenant Hanuman to bring itfrom Himalayas. Since it took longer to bring thelingam, Sita built a lingam, made of just Sands ofthe shores, which is also believed to be the one inthe sanctum of the temple This account is wellsupported by the original Ramayana authoredby Valmiki were it is written in yudha kanda .

Longest Corridors

We were spell bound by the beauty of the corri-dors which are sculpted and painted artistically. The total length of these corridors is about 3850feet. There are about 1212 pillars in the outer cor-ridor. Each of their height is from 25 to 30 feet fromthe floor to the center of the roof.

Floating Stones!

We were astonished to see 20 kg stone floatingon the water. It’s incredible! These amazing float-ing stones only found in coastal region ofRameswaram. According to Ramayana, floatingstones were used in the construction of Ramasethubuilt more than 1.75 million years ago. There are4 to 5 floating stones, each weighing 10 to 20 kgs

By Lakshman Sundar

Last week I visited with my wife the renownedtemple town of Rameswaram that lies on the southeastern tip of mainland India. It is about 1600kilometres from Mumbai. Since it is an island, itis connected from mainland India by PambanBridge. The approach to Rameswaram is both

enchanting and exciting. Seas on both sides butof different color. On one side it is blue and on theother side it is light green. Sri Lanka is just 40kilometres away. Busloads of tourists pour intoRameswaram throughout the day and night. There are lots to see in this sacred town.

We visited the Sri Sankara Mutt, Ra-manathaswamy, Kothandaramaswamy and Pan-chamukhi Anjaneyar Temples, Sri Ramar Theer-tam, Sri Lakshmana Theertam, Sri NatarajarDhyan Mandir , lovely beaches and Dr. APKKalam House. There are many restaurants serv-ing both South Indian and North Indian foods.Rameswaram has enormous tourist potential.

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

It is the most iconic historic landmark of thetown. Located in the centre oftown, Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hin-du temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva. The tem-ple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines, whereShiva is worshipped in the form ofa Jyotirlinga (pillar of light). It is also one of the275 Paadal Petra Sthalam temples ( glorified inhymns ) by the three of the most revered ShaiviteNayanar saints Appar, Sundarar and TirugnanaSambandar. The main tower or rajagopuram is 53m tall and it is visible from 10 miles afar.

Genesis

Rameswaram means “Lord of Rama” (Râma-îúvaram) in Sanskrit, an epithet of Shiva, thepresiding deity of the RamanathaswamyTemple. According to Hinduepic Ramayana, Rama, the seventh avatar of thegod Vishnu, prayed to Shiva here to absolve any

kept in Rameswaram temple. Few more stonesare there in Panchamukha Hanuman Temple. This bridge made of floating stones can still beseen between India and Sri Lanka from Ramesh-waram, the place where Lord Ram prayed to lordShiva and started the construction of the bridge. These stones are similar to any other stone andpossess the same features, physical and chemicalcomposition. It is a world wonder but not receivedenough publicity. Thousands of pilgrims every-day, show high interest in seeing the floatingstones. I even touched a floating stone inside Pan-chamukhi Anjaneyar Temple like other tourists.

Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi , the southernmost tip of the is-land is 18 km way from the centre of the townand can be reached by road. It houses the SriKothandaramaswamy Temple dedicated to LordRama. Though Dhanushkodi was washed awayduring the 1964 cyclone, the temple alone re-mained intact. It is where Vibhishana, a brotherof Ravana surrendered before Rama in theepic Ramayana.

We went by auto and the driver was drivingat top speed. On both sides miles of beaches againof different colors , longer and brighter and notbroader than the Marina Beach at Chennai. Thetowering Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple atRameswaram is clearly visible from here. Wewaked on the sands, visited temples and ate man-go slices peppered with chilli powder.

Dr. A.P.J. Kalam House

We went to the House of Kalam that attractsstream of visitors throughout the day. The Houseof Kalam is the childhood home of India’s belovedformer president, late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. It wasestablishedas museumin 2011.

Thoughlate DrKalam wasborn insmall hutlocated inthe exactsame placewhere thisone storeybuilding is,it was onlyover the years that the house was worked on anddesigned to make it comfortable for his family tolive here. Today, the gallery houses photographsfrom the president’s childhood and his transfor-mation from a small-town boy to one of the mostvalued scientists in the country. The museum hasalso made note of Dr Kalam’s achievements inthe field of research through his formative years, his awards and recognition that he received bothnationally and globally. Adjacent to this buildingthere is an arcade in his name run by his brotherselling gift items and other products.

Recently our Forestand climate changeminister Prakash Jav-adekar said in the Ra-jya sabha that tiger pop-ulation in the countryhas increased by 750 inthe last four years to2,976. Hunting andkilling of animals hasbecome a form of recre-ation. Murdering hu-mans is considered acrime. But killing andwiping out an entiregenre is hardly givenconsideration.Like forests, wild-life is also a na-tional resource, which not onlyhelps us in main-taining the eco-logical balancebut is also bene-ficial from eco-nomic, recre-ational and aes-thetic points of view. Itwas a time when hu-man interference wasminimum, the numberof wild animals wasquite high and therewas no problem of theirprotection or conserva-tion. But, with the ex-pansion of agriculture, settlement, industrialand other developmen-tal activities and main-ly due to greed of man,the number of wild an-imals are gradually de-creasing day by day.

We must under-stand that the wildlifeis a precious gift Godhas given to this plan-et. The term ‘wildlife’not only caters to wildanimals but also takesinto account all undo-mesticated life formsincluding birds, in-sects, plants, fungi andeven microscopic or-ganisms. For maintain-ing a healthy ecologicalbalance on this earth, animals, plants andmarine species are asimportant ashumans. Hunting hastradition and the sup-port of very powerfulpeople on its side andwith their influencehunting has been leftuntouched by legisla-tion - the Protection ofAnimals Act only cov-

ers captive and domes-tic animals. High offi-cials, who are supposedto be the guardians oflaw, often abuse theirpowers to shield therich and powerful. Ourcountry is unique inhaving a significantnumber of tigers in thewild, in spite of grow-ing population and re-source extraction pres-sures on their habitat.Tigers are the heritageof our country, evokedin the vedas, puranas

and many other litera-ture for their unparal-leled strength and aes-thetic beauty. The de-struction of forest cov-erage by Maoists maybe one of the reasons forthis decrease. Wild an-imal deaths were alsoreported from AndhraPradesh, Assam, Kera-la, Karnataka and Ut-tarakhand. No doubt, the world wild life Fundis the internationalagency, which is doingcommendable work inpromoting the protec-tion of wildlife andthere are number ofnational agencies en-gaged in the conserva-tion of wildlife.

We should knowthat we are not justanimals, but that webelong to the same fam-ily tree as other mam-mals, that our physiol-ogy and bodily process-es are just like theirs, and that our mentalprocesses too are fromthe same general pat-tern. The protection ofthe national animal hasbeen a significantachievement till now.Hope this continuesand leads to a signifi-cant rise in the comingyears. Among animals, some are fewer in num-ber than the others, If

proper care and securi-ty are extended tothem, the rare animalswould survive. Only thefuture can tell whethernational animal willsurvive to maintain themuch-needed ecologicalbalance. If we delaynow, it might be toolate.

Tigers play a largerole in sustaining thebiodiversity of forests,in maintaining healthyecology, habitat conser-vation and the liveli-

hoods of ruralcommunities. Thetiger populationhas decreased inthe states of Te-langana &Andhra Pradesh. The destructionof forest coverageby Maoists maybe one of the rea-sons for this

decrease. Wild tigerdeaths were also report-ed from AndhraPradesh, Assam, Kera-la, Karnataka and Ut-tarakhand. During thefirst six months of theyear, 30 deaths werereported. The protectionof the national animalhas been a significantachievement till now.Hope this continuesand leads to a signifi-cant rise in the comingyears. Credit must alsobe given to Aircel forinitiating “Save Tiger”campaign, along withNew Delhi Television(NDTV), who played anactive role in creatingawareness among thepeople on dwindling ti-ger population inIndia. The number ofwild tigers has gone upto 3,890, from the ear-lier 2010 estimate of3200, according to theWorld Wildlife Fundand the Global TigerForum. A new Tigercommando force shouldbe created to protect ti-gers from the poachers.Government must tryto put in more efforts toimprove the arrange-ments to conserve thenational pride - the Ti-ger.

Accepting the need for anincrease in tariff rates

With prices set to increase for data and callingfor Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Jio subscribers in thenext few days, people are skeptical about how theincrease will affect their lives on a monthly basis? However, the decisionwas expected after telecom giants suffered massive losses in subsequentquarterly analysis leading up to a deficit of over twenty three thousandcrores. The service providers cannot be blamed for increasing the rates asthey had no other choice.

It was only a few years ago that rate for internet connectivity was sohigh for each gigabyte of data. We have come a long way from spendingtwo hundred and forty nine rupees for one GB per month to getting twoGB per day for a month for just under five hundred rupees. It will be alittle hard for people to adjust to the increased rates, but Indians havealways been up to the challenges imposed on them. Hopefully, telecom-munication companies do not go into more debt and leave a monopoly fora single company to exploit later on. This is why we need to accept theincreasing tariffs.
