Swing into action before it is too lateSlowly and gradually, the world is drifting towards a climate ca-

tastrophe which can easily be termed as the biggest crisis facinghumankind. We can see glaciers melting and collapsing on the web;ice losses in Antarctica have tripled since 2012 so that sea levelsare rising faster today than at any time in the last quarter-century.

The scientists have been warning about the impending dangersince long. In 1896, a Swedish scientist said that adding carbondioxide to the atmosphere could lead to warmer global tempera-tures. By the 1930s, scientists were measuring the increase andin the late 1960s, they had documented the impact of melting icein Antarctica. However, inspite of these warnings, human beingshave allowed the problem to grow deeper and today we are stand-ing at the threshold making it impossible to ignore the climatechange any further. According to NASA, 18 of the 19 warmest yearsever recorded have occurred since 2000. The last five years havebeen the hottest since record-keeping began in 1880, it is said.

We tend to think of climate change as a monumental global chal-lenge that can be reduced only by the concerted efforts of nationsand by governments and international corporations. While this istrue to a certain extent, but the responsibility towards our planetearth lies with each one of us as well and we can all contribute insolving the problem at an individual level.

To begin with, we can make our commute green. This can bedone by opting for public transportation rather than own vehiclesor by car-pooling. Going to work or markets by bike, if possible, isanother best option and will go a long way in cutting down carbonemission.

Secondly, we can be more conservative with energy usage. Sim-ple steps like turning off lights and unplugging devices when notin use; replacing light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs help insaving electricity thereby reducing pollution.

We can also contribute immensely by recycling or reusing prod-ucts. Manufacturing plants emit a large number of greenhousegasses per year. It is unavoidable in the production of goods thatwe use on a regular basis. However, an alternative solution is toinvest in recycling, which is cost effective and eco-friendly pro-cess.

Most importantly, we can spread awareness among others aboutclimate change. Either by word of mouth or social media, it is es-sential to educate others on what climate change is doing to ourplanet and the impending danger.

It is already quite late and we have inflicted serious damages tothe environment. Along with the government, it is the responsi-bility of each one of us to save the environment and preserve theplanet for future generations.

Soft skills make life betterThese days getting a

job is not so easy and theplacement require-ments are so many butthe most important onesare people skills. I willgive one example to un-derstand what is thisterm ‘people skills’?

Usually if you havetoothache you will go toa doctor whose reputa-tion is good and who hasthe technical skills totreat your tooth, butbesides these skills youwill prefer a dentistwho is pleasant andtakes time to answeryour questions; or willyou prefer the one who

treats you like a num-ber in a long line of num-bered people? If you arekeeping a maid in yourhouse you will prefer asmiling face than a‘khadoos’ one. Theseskills, which teach youhow to behave with oth-er people, are called aspeople skills or interper-sonal skills or soft skills. You will find that whileyour technical skillsmay get your foot in thedoor, your people skillsare what opens most ofthe doors to come. Howethical are you in yourworking principles, howis your attitude, theseplay a crucial part informing people’s opinionof you. Your communi-cation skills, your emo-tional intelligence and awhole lot of other per-sonal attributes are thesoft skills that pave theway to success. Thesesoft skills help in prob-lem solving, delegating, motivating, and teambuilding.

Earlier in work-place, it was taken asgranted that peopleknow how to behavewith other people. But

after many cases of dis-illusionment from supe-riors and the frustratedscenario of organiza-tions, the need for peo-ple skills was recognisedand the requirement totrain people in softskills emerged. But howto understand that youneed soft skills train-ing? We can understandby observing. If you are

really good at gettingclients, and not so goodat retaining them, chances are you have asoft skills gap. If yourstaff turnover is moreand you have to keepretraining people, chances are you have asoft skills gap. Whenyou have many manag-ers but no real leaders– that’s a soft skills gap.In fact, whenever youare not able to capital-ize on the wealth ofknowledge, experienceand proficiency withinyour team, then youshould be assessing thelevel of communicationand interpersonal skillsthat are present in yourorganization. The reali-ty is that the workplacehas evolved an interper-sonal dynamic that can’tbe ignored.

To maintain rela-tionship with people youneed to know the acts oflistening, presentingideas, resolving conflict, and fostering an openand honest work envi-ronment. This will allowworkers to participatefully in team projects, show appreciation for

others, and enlist sup-port for their projects.Soft skills refer to bothcharacter traits and in-terpersonal skills thatwill influence how wella person can work orinteract with others, butthe importance of thesesoft skills is often under-valued, and there is farless training providedfor them than hard

skills. We can say thatsoft skills are personalattributes that influ-ence how well you canwork or interact withothers. By using theseskills you can, createtrust and dependability, and lead teams. These

No. 4 or 5 years back this was the situation, but nowthe scenario has changed and our government is tryingto sport all the sports. The focus is now to prepare forthe Olympics, Asian Games etc. by central as well asstate government. Cricket, undoubtedly is the most fa-mous sport in our country. But the star cricketers them-selves are promoting other games also like football, hock-ey, tennis, boxing, wrestling etc. Sachin Tendulkar, Vi-

rat Kohli, Kapil Dev, M S Dhoni all these cricket players are promotingother games as well, which is heartening.Sandeep N Rathod, Ranji player, Panvel

NAVI MUMBAIKARS SPEAK Are we only promoting Cricket in our country?

Now sportspersons like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Sa-nia Mirza are getting fame like cricketers. While thescenario has changed over the years and the govern-ment is making an effort to promote all the sports, thereis a need to improve the facilities being provided by thegovernment.Javed S Shaikh, Mumbai

Cricket has always been considered as the crown of In-dian sports. It has a huge fan base in each and everypart of the country. Even though cricket is the mostpopular sports in the country, we cannot ignore the factthat in the last few years there has been good growth ofother sports as well. We have many tournaments likeISL, PBL, Pro Kabbadi, Hockey India League and a fewmore Leagues which are contributing towards the

growth of Indian sports. So we can say that apart from cricket othersports like Football, badminton, kabbadi, hockey, table tennis have pro-gressed a lot in the past few years and they have a huge audience.Siddesh Waykar, Vashi

There is no denying the fact that people in India lovecricket. However, other sports too are getting equal sup-port these days. Infact the celebrities are coming for-ward and promoting other sports. Football and Hockey, for instance are gaining immense recognition. Some ofthe celebrities have their own football teams. It’s notwhat we promote, it’s why we promote and for whom?Mohammad Wasim, Cricketer, Nerul

Cricket in India is a national obsession, it’s no more justa game. Cricket is massively supported, appreciated &promoted which is why somewhere it’s killing other sports.Cricket & cricketers enjoy maximum exposure and ben-efits leaving kabaddi, badminton, hockey & tennis play-ers craving for attention. Do they not play as hard ascricketers to bring pride and glory to our nation? No onewould have even bothered about kabaddi if the celebrities

had not shown their interest in it. Media definitely plays a vital role in this,so I think more or at least equal attention should be paid to other sports inorder to uplift them and maintain the true essence of sports.Samruddhi Vanarse, Actress & Media Professional, Kamothe

No. Now, the government is promoting all the sports. The Government has opened sports Center at every dis-trict level which provides good facilities. Infact now moreand more people are taking keen interest in sports andare taking it up as a career. The system, quality of coach, training, diet plan everything has changed over the timeand our country is taking great efforts in groomingsportspersons. - Gopal B Chavhan, Panvel

Environment-friendly ChristmasEnvironment is common to all. It is irreligious,

non communal , non sectarian and unbiased. So,in order to protect the environment I appeal toour Christian brothers, sisters and friends to cel-ebrate the Christmas without lighting candles.

On Christmas eve some 3 billion or 300 crore candles are burnt world-wide. Each candle emits 30 times more carbon dioxide than a single firecracker. A firecracker gives off 0.4 gm carbon dioxide whereas a candlespreads 12 gm of the same. So, stop the practice of massive air pollution.

Have a clean and green Christmas this year.Lakshman Sundar, Vashi

Gujarat Governor on Organic FarmingOrganic farming is an approach of farming without use chemical

input is termed as organic farming. Increasing demand for green safefood has attracted the attention of people towards organic farming. Thedemand of organic farming is increasing drastically, because now every-one knows the harmful effects of chemicals to crops and domestic ani-mals. Describing himself fortunate to be able to serve the auspiciousland of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Maharshi Dayanand Saras-wati, Gujarat Governor Shri Devvrat wished the farmers of Gujarat toadapt natural farming for the benefit of the society. He said that one cowcan sustain farming on 30 acre land with the application of SubhashPalekar method of natural farming and shared his determination tomake all the 18,000 villages of Gujarat as Ideal Villages and to live up toPrime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of doubling farmers’ income by2022, to ensure the villages’ income stay in village and get urban in-come too.

It helps in maintaining environment health by reducing the level ofpollution. It reduces human and animal health hazards by reducing thelevel of residues in the product. We can keep agricultural production ata higher level and make it sustainable. It reduces the cost of agricultur-al production and also improves the soil health. Organic farming giveschance to better use of crop residue, agriculture waste, dairy waste, poultry waste etc. Organic farming is such a method, which do not harmthe climate in any way since there is no use of any type of chemicals andtoxic pesticide. Today, the product from organic farming has high de-mands in the market because of its health benefits.

We must remember that organic food only can feed us and keep ushealthy without producing the toxic effects of chemical agriculture if wewant to stay fit and live a healthy life. Organic farming is much benefi-cial in comparison to the Inorganic farming, as there is great demandfor organic food in the market.

held very close to theNMMC hospital inVashi. The patientsget inconvenienceddue to noise pollutionand also traffic snarlsduring the festival. Moreover, there issafety hazard as cook-ing gas cylinders areused by the vendorswithout exercisingprecaution,” informedRohit Malhotra.

Malhotra furtherinformed, “ I, alongwith my group mem-bers, personally visit-ed the NMMC head-quarter on 20th De-cember, 2019 to meetthe civic officials aswell as civic chief An-nasaheb Misal. How-ever as there was gen-eral body meeting onthat day, we were un-able to meet them.”

“The PIL of theBombay HC of 2010order clearly statesthat the city roads aremeant for enabling ve-hicular movementand not for any com-mercial festivals. Dur-ing Chowpatty festi-val, the vendors put upthe stalls and the roadgets constricted. Thisleads to traffic snarl inthe area. So it is ourhumble request thatthe civic body shouldstrictly look into thematter and theyshould scrap the up-coming festival or try

to shift it to some oth-er location where thepublic will not be in-convenienced,” con-cluded Malhotra.

skills are essential foryour success in theworkplace, your compa-ny’s success and yourpersonal life.

I want to tell a sto-ry here that I readfrom somewhere for mychildren at their youngage. There was once alittle village which wasseparated from the seaand its great cliffs by aforest. That forest wasthe village’s best defenceagainst the storms andfuries of the sea, but theforest was constantly indanger, because asmall group of wickedbeings came everynight to cut down someof the trees. The villag-ers could do nothing tostop this so they con-

stantly used to plantnew trees to replace thefallen ones. And for gen-erations, such was lifefor them as parentstaught their childrenhow to plant, and thechildren spent all theirfree time planting newtrees. Each family hadto do this duty. Butthen, there was a greatmisfortune. One of thefamilies died leaving noone to plant and theirarea of the forest beganlosing more trees. There was nothing tobe done, the tragedywas inevitable, and inthe village the peopleprepared to emigrateafter so many centuries. But one young mansaid that he should notmigrate but he will alsotake care of that fami-ly’s area. As he started

many people came for-ward to help him andsoon all the places werefilled with trees. Dayafter day, year afteryear, almost impercep-tibly, the forest got big-ger and bigger, and itprovided more andmore protection, and itall was the result of peo-ple skills like leadershipskill shown by theyoung man and team-work showed by the vil-lagers. We have seenthat most interactionswith other people re-quire some level of softskills. In organizationyou might be negotiat-ing to win a new con-tract, presenting yournew idea to colleagues, networking for a newjob, so the need for softskills increases day byday. On the other hand,
