Rising beggar population

- A matter of concernGrowth of any city is synonymous to its

industrialization and economic develop-ment. The huge manpower needed for sus-taining this development process actuatesthe rural urban shift leading to migrationfrom nearby rural areas. Most of the timesthe city is not able to provide the basicamenities required for living to this mi-grating population, who then seek shelterin the slums. These squatter settlementsor slums are in fact the by-product of un-controlled urbanization. The slum popula-tion keeps multiplying at a very high rateand more mouths to feed than hands toearn, lead family members especially thechildren, either into crime or begging. These are two fields, which do not requireany sort of investments and are a sourceof easy money.

Navi Mumbai of late, is becoming a hubfor such activities. One encounters beg-gars on almost all the traffic signals, out-side hotels and restaurants, near ticketcounters of railway stations and outsidereligious places. Eunuchs are also becom-ing a common feature on traffic signals. Thebeggars and eunuchs seem to get somesort of training to extort money from thevehicle owners who stop at these signals. They, in a very adamant manner, coax andcajole people to dole out money. If some-one refuses to pay, they dare to abuse andeven try to inflict damage on the vehiclesin their bid to show displeasure. If a per-son happens to be travelling in an autorickshaw, they create embarrassing scenesby touching feet, begging with foldedhands, displaying empty stomachs andsometimes by even crying, in turn forcingthe person to yield and give alms.

Apart from this, these beggars alongwith the vendors pose a grave accidentthreat as they continue with their businesswithout caring for the traffic and the onusfor their safety lies with the vehicle driv-er.

Since these activities are going unhin-dered even in the presence of the trafficpolicemen, it is very obvious that such il-legal activities have the police umbrella. The police should take steps to curb theseillegal activities, which apart from creat-ing shabby scenes are also accident haz-ards. Unless nipped in the bud, this prob-lem will turn into a menace and then tak-ing action at a later date would seem to beapparently “inhuman”. Efforts should bemade by the authorities to persuade thesepeople to slog for earning their livelihoodrather than resorting to easy money mak-ing through begging thus prevent creat-ing parasites on the society.

We live in an agewhere life has becometoo fast for most of us.Stress is a common partof our daily lives andpeople are turning tomeditation, yoga, aro-matherapy and othernatural forms of relax-ation and treatment. The use of flower reme-dies is a similar form oftreatment which worksdeeply and without sideeffects. It was intro-duced by Dr. EdwardBach, who was a quali-fied Allopathic doctor, who later studied andpracticed Homeopathy.Dr. Bach spent six longyears roaming about injungles and ravines, collecting information

about various plantsand their flowers andthen produced 38 med-icines which corre-spond to 38 possiblechanges of man’s mood. These medicines arecalled Bach FlowerRemedies.

There is an intimate

relation between thephysical body andmind. The mind is themirror which reflectsthe physical state of theperson. Hence, ail-ments in the differentparts of the body havea cumulative effect onthe mind and mood ofthe person. It is this

change of mood – themental state – of thepatient which the Flow-er Remedies intend tochange and rectify, thereby nullifying thecumulative result of allphysical ailments.

In Bach FlowerRemedies, physical

symptoms are usuallynot considered, onlymental symptoms aretaken into account. Thesuitable remedy, basedon mental symptoms,is selected from the 38remedies. When we saythat treatment by Bach

Brief Backdrop:36-year-old Mrs Priti Iyer a social worker working with L&T CSR

Dept, had a history of 3 failed attempts and she conceived dichorionic(fraternal) twins spontaneously. At 13 weeks 5days gestation, her cervixstarted opening from inside. Hence, a stitch was placed in the cervix tohelp it to stay closed and was kept on medication and bed rest. Thisstitch became loose and had to be reinforced after two weeks. Patientwas very closely monitored for cervical length and integrity of the stitch.

After a few days, she visited the hospital on 15 weeks by gestationwith complaints of abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. She was againkept on conservative management but this time she started leakingfrom one of the sacs. She had severe pain which leads to the tearing ofthe stitch and expulsion of the first twin .

Hence, ultra-sonography (USG) was performed to examine the growthof the twins and the amount of liquor. USG revealed that one of thefetuses (twin 1, lower fetus) was showing no movements and heart ac-tivity and confirmed the demise of one of the twins. It was lying outsidethe uterus. The second twin was normal and doing well. This was dis-heartening and devastating for her entire family.

Flower Remedies isbased on only mentalsymptoms, it does notmean that this treat-ment is confined tomental cases only. Itsimply means that thepatient is cured bothphysically and mental-ly by the remedy whichis prescribed based onmental symptoms.

Some advantages of

the Bach Flower Rem-edies are:• Selection of the rem-

edy is easy as thereare only 38 medi-cines to choose from.

• More than one rem-edy can be taken in-dividually or in com-bination at the sametime.

• There are no side ef-fects.

• These remedies canbe taken with medi-cines from other sys-tems without inter-

fering with their ac-tion.The ultimate pur-

pose of Bach FlowerRemedies is to removefrom the mind of thepatient any obstructionwhich prevents hissmooth flow of lifewhich means harmoni-ous working of the bodyby the soul actingthrough mind. Aftertaking the medicine ifthere is a change in themood of the patient, themedicine may be

changed accordingly. There is no fixed ruleby which it can be de-termined how long itwould be necessary tocontinue giving FlowerRemedies. If it is a tem-porary sensation, it

may go even with onesingle dose of the reme-dy, but if it is intendedto change the very tem-perament of the personor to remove a chronicailment, it may requiremonths to do it. All

these remedies shouldbe available at mostHomeopathic Pharma-cies and the remediescan be had in liquid orglobule form.

Samir Zaveri, Rail-way and RTI Activistadded, “The step takenis really appreciated asit is the need of thecommuters. Howeverthe Central Railwaymust first properlystudy the pros and consof the AC Trains pres-ently running on West-ern Railway. Due to thehigh ticket prices, thetrains on that route runempty for the day long.It is only during peakhours it has commut-ers.”

He further added,

“While deciding on thefares in Navi Mumbai, they should have a dif-ferent fare structurefrom that of WesternRailway. Otherwise, thetrains are likely to runempty. Most of the com-muters between Thane- Vashi and Thane –Panvel are labourers, working in the Indus-trial Zones. A higherfare will deter themfrom using the facility.Big corporate compa-nies do reimburse theFirst Class Tickets oftheir employees butwhen it comes to ACPass, these are reim-bursed to very high endofficers only.”

Zaveri suggested,“On a trial basis, theRailways can first in-stall an AC coach in theexisting local train togain confidence andgood response from thecommuters for betterresponse in future.”

However, most of thecommuters are highlyexcited and are eagerlywaiting for the launchof these trains.

Aarey versus KanjumargIn what can spell trouble for the Maharashtra government and also to

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited, the Bombay HC indicated thatit would look into the probability of shifting the controversial metro IIIproject to Kanjurmarg instead of Aarey colony. With the result, all therecords pertaining to Kanjurmarg site will have to be presented for tak-ing a fair decision. It is reliably learnt that it was decided to construct thecar sheds for both Metro III and Metro VI lines at Kanjurmarg and thesudden change of place has sparked controversy and the resultant turnaround in the case. Thus Aarey versus Kanjurmarg question is raisedand going rounds as of now.

It is time to prevent an entire generationfrom Nicotine addiction

It is a right step in the right direction to issue an Ordinance banningE- Cigarettes. E- Cigarettes were initially deemed a safe alternative totraditional smoking. While E-Cigarettes do not contain chemicals, in-cluding tar, present in tobacco, many substances which are present couldbe potentially harmful.

By banning E-Cigarettes, we are trying to prevent entire generationfrom nicotine addiction and youth is going to be really benefited. Thereare more than 400 brands available in India and over 10 crore people inIndia smoke E-Cigarettes. The Ordinance, which will be turned into alegislation in the next Parliament session, proposes maximum punish-ment up to one year along with a fine of Rs.1 lakh, for first time violators.

AsthmaAsthma is a common long-term inflammato-

ry disease of the airways of the lungs. It is char-acterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm.Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, cough-ing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These may occur a few times a day or a few timesper week. Depending on the person, they maybecome worse at night or with exercise.

Asthma is thought to be caused by a combi-nation of genetic and environmental factors.Environmental factors include exposure to airpollution and allergens. Other potential triggersinclude medications such as aspirin and betablockers. Diagnosis is usually based on the pat-tern of symptoms, response to therapy over time, and spirometry. Asthma is classified accordingto the frequency of symptoms, forced expiratoryvolume in one second (FEV1), and peak expira-tory flow rate. It may also be classified as atopicor non-atopic, where atopy refers to a predisposi-tion toward developing a type 1 hypersensitivityreaction.

There is no cure for asthma. Symptoms canbe prevented by avoiding triggers, such as aller-gens and irritants, and by the use of inhaled cor-

ticosteroids. Long-acting beta agonists (LABA) orantileukotriene agents may be used in addition toinhaled corticosteroids if asthma symptoms re-main uncontrolled. Treatment of rapidly worsen-ing symptoms is usually with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist such as salbutamol and cor-ticosteroids taken by mouth. In very severe cas-es, intravenous corticosteroids, magnesium sul-fate, and hospitalization may be required.

In 2015, 358 million people globally had asth-ma, up from 183 million in 1990. It caused about397,100 deaths in 2015, most of which occurredin the developing world. It often begins in child-hood. The rates of asthma have increased signifi-cantly since the 1960s. Asthma was recognized asearly as Ancient Egypt. The word "asthma" is fromthe Greek ?s?μa, ásthma, which means "panting".

ArthritisArthritis is a term often used to mean any dis-

order that affects joints. Symptoms generally in-clude joint pain and stiffness. Other symptomsmay include redness, warmth, swelling, and de-creased range of motion of the affected joints. In

some types other organs are also affected. Onsetcan be gradual or sudden.

There are over 100 types of arthritis. The mostcommon forms are osteoarthritis (degenerativejoint disease) and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoar-thritis usually occurs with age and affects the fin-gers, knees, and hips. Rheumatoid arthritis is anautoimmune disorder that often affects the handsand feet.[6] Other types include gout, lupus, fi-bromyalgia, and septic arthritis. They are all typesof rheumatic disease.

Treatment may include resting the joint andalternating between applying ice and heat. Weightloss and exercise may also be useful. Pain medi-cations such as ibuprofen and paracetamol (ace-taminophen) may be used. In some a joint replace-ment may be useful.

Osteoarthritis affects more than 3.8% of peo-ple while rheumatoid arthritis affects about 0.24%of people. Gout affects about 1–2% of the Westernpopulation at some point in their lives. In Austra-lia about 15% of people are affected, while in theUnited States more than 20% have a type of ar-thritis. Overall the disease becomes more com-mon with age. Arthritis is a common reason thatpeople miss work and can result in a decreasedquality of life. The term is derived from arthr-(meaning joint) and -itis (meaning inflammation).
