In the lastweek, police havesearched and prose-cuted 8 such unau-thorized Vadapavs,Chinese stalls in theAPMC market. Theyhave also seized theirmaterials along withgas cylinders.

In the APMCmarket, unautho-rized use of gascylinders is rampantby hawkers whoillegally encroachupon the footpath andsell vadapavs, Chi-

nese and othereateries. It was alsofound that thesevendors were unoffi-cially using gascylinders to cook foodon the roads, thusendangering the livesof the citizens.

Widening tax base forfaster development

In the early 90’s our country made remarkable strides in eco-nomic growth with higher exports and industrial output. Unfortu-nately, the same development process could not continue for longas there was overall economic recession and the revenue fell farshort of expenditure. Today, the statistics of industrial output andeconomic growth is quite disheartening. The government in itsbid to contain deficits and carry out development process findsraising the tax rates of the introduction of new taxes as the easi-est way out.

However, frequent and disproportionate hikes in tax rates notonly put an additional burden on the masses but also encouragetax theft and evasion. It should be realised that the hikes can bemade more acceptable to the people if they are done in smallproportions. Similarly, after paying huge taxes, citizens have ev-ery right to know where the money is spent. Consumers definite-ly will not be happy to pay the increasing taxes if they continue toface problems and poor quality services.

While it is true that it is absolutely necessary to generate moreand more number of tax payers but practically things are differ-ent. High rates of tax are generating a feeling of burden in themasses. Every common man shells out his maximum income tothe government by way of taxes. No one can escape the tax trau-ma. Because of high tax rates, people are either reluctant to payor are manipulating and concealing true income to save on taxes. They are able to do this because of loopholes in the policies. As aresult, the tax base of our country and the state is not widening atthe pace at which it should have grown.

To increase the revenue, government should try to widen thetax base and this would be possible only when the tax rates aremade reasonable. This will automatically generate voluntary taxpayers. Apart from this, stringent policy measures should be madeand adopted to prevent tax evasion. Methods of calculation oftaxes should be simplified so that there is least possibility of ma-nipulation and evasion of taxes. With simple rules and reason-able rate of taxes, the government will be able to widen the taxnetwork, which will ultimately result in larger revenue and fasterdevelopment process as a whole.

Near to nature far from stressFrom last month I

was feeling stressedout- stress of not work-ing towards my goals.I was feeling such amental block that Iwas not able to write afew lines without feel-ing stress. Suddenlyone of my friends invit-ed us to his farmhouse. I decided tomanage and go, andbelieve me as soon as Iwas on the outskirts ofMumbai the air invig-orated me. When Ireached the farmhouse, the beautifulmarigolds from thegarden gave such awarm welcome ,I justcould not stop smiling. And in two days spentthere I found thatspending time in na-ture can help relievestress and anxiety, im-prove your mood, andboost feelings of happi-ness and wellbeing.

We can call it eco-therapy, green time orthe nature cure, it is awell- known fact thathumans evolved in thegreat outdoors, andyour brain benefitsfrom a journey back tonature. This is a tech-nological world and welive in a time when wecan set the thermo-stat, order takeout andstream a movie from acell phone; never hav-ing to get off the couch, let alone leave thehouse, and this hasmade us the couch po-tato we are. Our an-cestors were tightlytied to time in natureas they had to survive. They had to be alert allthe time to get food bykilling animals or tosave them from pre-dating animals .Themodern way we livehas changed radicallyfrom life in the stonebut our brains havemostly stayed thesame, that is havingdeep connection withnature, and the newdiseases and problemstell us that if we don’tnourish this bond de-spite our technologicaladvancements, wemay suffer greatly.

Today, we live withadvanced technology

designed to constantlypull for our attentionbut many scientistsbelieve our brains werenot made for this kindof information bom-bardment, and that itcan lead to mental fa-tigue, overwhelm, andburnout. If you areholed up in your home

for too long then youfeel suffocated andstressed and gettingback to nature couldsoothe you. If you arefeeling depressed, tryto take a stroll in thewoods and your moodwill improve immedi-ately. In the urban en-vironment the buzzingof people, cars zippingdown the street andbright billboards flash-ing advertisements areall constant stimula-tion that puts stress onbrains. While naturepresents a tranquil at-mosphere that gentlycaptures your atten-tion instead of sudden-ly snatching it, calm-ing your nerves .We alldo so much exercise aswe think that it is goodfor body as well as forthe state of your mind. But walking in thenatural scenario low-ers activity in the partof the brain linked tonegative rumination. We always knew thathiking in nature hadmany psychologicalbenefits, but till nownot much scientific ev-idence was there butnow scientists are be-ginning to find evi-dence that being innature has a profound

impact on our brainsand our behaviour, helping us to reduceanxiety, brooding, andstress, and increaseour attention capacity, creativity, and ourability to connect withother people.

Everyone particularly the youth are constantly updat-ing on Social Media about what’s happening in theirlives. It’s addictive and people subconsciously right af-ter unlocking the phone, open social media apps to seewhat is happening in others’ lives. Today’s youth notonly spend their time in consuming the social media butalso in deciding what and how to update it. As a student,I feel that social media distracts students, wastes their

time, doesn’t allow them to concentrate properly on studying and ulti-mately students get no benefit of using Social Media. Social Media can bea blessing for everyone but the addiction of it is harmful.

Saurabh Patil, Nerul, CA Student

NAVI MUMBAIKARS SPEAK Your views on general addiction to social media?

QUESTION FOR NEXT WEEK : Do you feel AAP’s victory may turn tables in NMMC’s elections?

Social media addiction is way more dangerous than wethink- too much of something is always a problem, andwhat’s worse it is not just restricted to teens. Socialmedia is something everyone seems to be addicted to. Ikeep coming across the depressing stories of how peo-ple hustle way too much in order to maintain theirreputation on social media. Is this really what socialmedia is for? Following memes, keeping in touch with

lost friends, posting once in a while or posting even for the sake of busi-ness is one thing and getting addicted to it to an extent where you feeldisappointed & ungrateful about your life & your personal achievementsis whole another level of comparison. I have seen content mocking about‘social media addiction rehab centres’. Hope this remains a topic of jestand we don’t need them in near future. Access to internet & social me-dia is a privilege.

Samrudhii Vanarse

Social media has increasingly become a form of valida-tion for the youth in particular. The advent of this con-cept has led our generation to develop an addiction wherea few days without its presence is considered to be a“Detox”. The fact that we let the virtual world of socialmedia affect us so much, that its consumption is becom-ing toxic for us, is scary enough to know where the youthis leading. Everything and anything beyond the thresh-old is harmful. Back in the days, we used to watch a total of 2 hours oftelevision in a day, and yet it was called the ‘Monster Box’Now I wonder what would we call the social media, a place which theyouth lives each day for?

Simran Pol, Music Student & Freelancer, Nerul

As Dave Willis said, “Social media is addictive preciselybecause it gives something which is real world lack of”and I think this is the basic reason for social media ad-diction. People are having so called perfect edited onlineversion of themselves on social media platform and ev-eryone is comparing their real offline selves with thatfiltered version of others which leads to social anxietydisorder. Social media is invented as a means of commu-

nication and today we made it weapon of our own mental and emotionaldestruction. No doubt social media platforms have their own advantagesbut using them excessively is obviously degrading us rapidly. So, have acontrol on social media but don’t let social media control us.

Reshma Nawale, CA student, Ghansoli.

Although Social Media has many benefits in our lives, addiction to Social media is dangerous. From the view-points of promoting and branding your business and shar-ing education information, social media is the right plat-form. Many business owners and other types of profes-sional organizations look for the right candidates throughsocial networking platforms for example LinkedIn. SocialMedia caters to your requirements perfectly whether youare a student. This capability of social media bridges the gap, and studentscan connect with their teaching staff and groups easily, anytime and any-where. Infants, kids, youngsters, adults, old aged are all glued to socialmedia via mobile (biggest suspect). Next to terrorism, being glued to socialmedia is the biggest threat to mankind. Kids have forgotten to play out-door, they play video games. Moreover they trust online fraud friends rath-er than trusting close friends or siblings. No doubt youth and teenagers aremajorly at the risk. Some of the negative effects of social media are Cyberbullying, Depression, Lack of concentration, social isolation, and internetaddiction. Your information resides on social media which may be misusedby hackers or undesirables and lead a potential threat to your business orprivacy. Too much time spent on social media can also risk your mentaland emotional health disconnecting you from the real world.

CA Shweta Patil, Seawoods

Nowadays one can notice that more than 70 percent ofpeople in the country are addicted to social media. Socialmedia addiction is really killing the productivity amongthe youngsters. They are hooked on social media most ofthe time and the reason they are losing their focus.

All in the mind

By Dr Veena Adige

Getting physicallyold is mandatory butbecoming old dependson you. Take our ownPrime Minister ShriNarendra Modi for ex-ample. At sixty plus, hegoes round the world, works for eighteenhours a day, has nottaken a single day offfor the last manyyears, and even whenhe fasts for nine contin-uous days, with noth-ing more than nimbu-paani, he is active andon the move.

Or take 92 year oldDr. Mahathir Moham-mad, the seventhPrime Minister of Ma-laysia. He is still active, healthy and in full pos-session of all his facul-ties.

Nearer home, mymother Sushila Mallya

was very active till her74th year. She travelledalone in busy Mumbai, attending meetings, staging plays, partici-pating in social workand organizing bhajangroups. It was onlywhen her kidneys total-ly failed that she had totake a back seat. Eventhen she was fully de-termined to go back toher active life, once shewas ok.

Looking back, a cou-ple of generations ago, forty was consideredold. The average lifespan then was just 57years. Better healthawareness raised thisbottom line and sixtybegan being consideredas the youth of old age. Some years back sixtymeant one had crossedan immense barrierand pujas were done onthe sixtieth birthdays.

Today, you are asold as you feel. A personcan be old at twenty fiveand another can beyoung at seventy five,it depends on the indi-vidual himself.

A few basic points tokeep oneself young are:• Be busy. If you are

busy you have notime to think aboutgrowing old. If youhave retired you cando social work. In theevening of your life, you would be havingadequate savings tofall back upon sonow you can work inan honorary capaci-ty or you can giveback to society whatyou have got from it.You can use your ex-pertise and experi-ence in advising andhelping others inyour field.

• You can be a watch-dog for your buildingor park to see thatno untoward inci-dent takes place.

• You can teach youngchildren Indian cul-ture, good mannersor just play withthem and enjoy. Be-ing with youngsterstakes a big load ofage away from you.

• Cleanse your mindand have only posi-

tive thoughts. Thisreflects in your be-havior, in yourthinking.

• Think young. Thereare many who feelthat they should be-have ‘according totheir age’. It is aknown fact that peo-ple can be emotional-ly young even at 90.You still can feel thesame emotions, havethe same feelings youhad when you wereyounger

• People feel that theyshould dress tradi-tionally once theyhave crossed a cer-tain age. It need notbe so. You can wearany dress, any co-lour, if it suits you,at any age.

• Physically you mayhave slowed down, itis natural. But slowdown gracefully, ac-cepting it and notfeeling that you canno longer do thingsyou used to.

• Eat healthy food.Fuel is important forany vehicle, whether

it is a car or a hu-man body. So if yourfood is healthy it ishalf the battle won.

• Money is important. After keeping asideadequate amountsfor hospitalization, medicines, emergen-cies and the like, therest can be used tohelp social causes, charity and theneedy. A greatamount of satisfac-tion can be experi-enced by doing thiswhich keeps you in abetter frame ofmind.

• Children, at thisage, have their ownlife and will not bewith you or may nothave time for you. Sodevelop friendshipswith like-mindedpeople where you candiscuss topics of mu-tual interest. Thereare senior citizensgroups, NRIPAgroups (Non-residentIndians Parentsgroups) etc. and youcan become a mem-ber.

• Get involved in hob-bies and developthem. You may havewanted to do some-

thing earlier butcould not do becauseof work or familypressures. Now isthe time to do it. Itcan be walking, trekking(dependingupon your physicalhealth), writing, reading

• You can continueyour education. It isnever too late. Iknow a person whowas awarded thePh.D. at 72 and an-other one who re-searched and be-came a Ph.D. at 69.Or you can doD.Litt. or anythingyou wish. What’sstopping you?

• Think of ways andmeans of spendingyour time fruitfullyinstead of wallowingin self-pity or wor-rying about achesand pains which arenormal at this age.

• Have a completemedical checkupand follow the doc-tor ’s instructionsand take the medi-cines prescribed.

ing short-term memo-ry. After the task whenresults were assessed,it was shown thatthose who walked innature experienced lessanxiety, rumination, and negative affect, aswell as more positiveemotions, in compari-son to the urban walk-ers. The nature walk-ers also improved theirperformance on thememory tasks.

In one recent exper-iment conducted in Ja-pan, participants wereassigned to walk eitherin a forest or in an ur-ban place while theirheart rate variability, heart rate, and bloodpressure were mea-sured. The participantsalso filled out question-naires about theirmoods, stress levels, and other psychologicalmeasures and the re-sults showed that thosewho walked in forestshad significantly lower

heart rates and higherheart rate variabilitywhich indicates morerelaxation and lessstress, and reportedbetter moods and lessanxiety, than those whowalked in urban set-tings. The conclusionwas that there’s some-thing about being innature that had a ben-eficial effect on stressreduction, above andbeyond what exercisealone might have pro-duced. Changing thescenery is a great wayto get the creative juic-es flowing, and natureoffers stimuli that youwon’t find while staringat a screen that’s whywe find that writerswrite better when theyare alone in the lap ofnature. RememberRobert Frost ‘s miles togo before I sleep .

Time in nature canhelp with your person-al relationships also asnatural beauty resultsin more prosocial be-haviours, like generos-ity and empathy. The

reasons for this effectare unclear; but scien-tists believe that weevolved to be more re-laxed in natural spac-es. These studies andothers provide evidencethat being in naturalspaces, or even justlooking out of a win-dow onto a naturals c e n e — s o m e h o wsoothes us and relievesstress. With all ofthese benefits to beingout in nature, it’s prob-ably no surprise thatsomething about na-ture makes us feelmore alive and vitaland being outdoorsgives us energy, makesus happier, helps us torelieve the everydaystresses of our over-scheduled lives, opensthe door to creativity, and helps us to be kindto others. So go nearnature and be beauti-ful.

Leander Paes- The learningcurve of Tennis

It is better to quit the game when people askwhy instead just prolonging the career just forplaying and then get dropped from the team inthe end. Leander Paes had a good run in International tennis and theend game. Every event Leander Paes graces in his last year as a profes-sional athlete is sure to mark an end to a glorious chapter. EverywhereI play, it’s just a rekindling, says Paes as he bids farewell to Maharash-tra Open. Paes played his last Tata Open Maharashtra and bid farewellto tennis.

Doubles win in Davis cup became a habit for the most successfuldoubles player in the history of tennis. Paes, the 46 year old veteran nowappear to be up the hill. He won 18 Grand Slam titles in men’s doublesand mixed doublestitles combined innearly 30 years onthe circuit. Paeshas won eight dou-bles and ten mixeddoubles GrandSlam titles. Heholds a careerGrand Slam inmen’s doubles andmixed doubles, and achieved therare men’s dou-bles/mixed doublesdouble at the 1999Wimbledon tour-nament. Hismixed doubles Wimbledon title in 2010 made him the second man (afterRod Laver) to win Wimbledon titles in three decades.

Paes received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, India’s highestsporting honor, in 1996–97; the Arjuna Award in 1990; the Padma Shriaward in 2001; and India’s third-highest civilian award, the PadmaBhushan Award in January 2014, for his outstanding contribution totennis in India. He won a bronze medal for India in singles in the 1996Atlanta Olympic Games. He competed in consecutive Olympics from1992 to 2016, making him the first Indian and only tennis player tocompete at seven Olympic Games. He is a former Davis Cup team cap-tain, and holds the record for the most Davis Cup doubles wins. Paes’record of 44 wins is unlikely to be broken anytime soon as except him, none of the active doubles player feature in the top-10 list.

Both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi pair were the excellent indoubles in all grand slams.

Leander has been described as having a strange playing style byAndre Agassi. He varies his play as the match goes on; he is one of thebest volleys and a talented drop shots. His volleying techniques werelearnt from former Indian player Akhtar Ali. He hits a one-handed back-hand, which he drives only seldom, preferring instead to slice whenreturning serve or rallying from his backhand. Flesh trade on the rise in several parts of thecountry- A cause for concern

Prostitution is on the rise in several parts of the country. One cansee young girls and even women trying to lure customers at many plac-es, even at crowded places and public residential areas. What is moreshocking is that these women operate in connivance with the police whoreceive their dues (haftas). Prostitution also takes place inside manyapartments and high-rise buildings in connivance with the police whoare their regular customers.

Winning Lessons from aChampion’s Life

Author: Viswanathan Anand

By C.K. Subramanaim

The game of chess is a mindgame where every move counts. Itis about making right moves andthe players need lot of patience andperseverance to play at the top lev-el.

Vishwanathan Anand, the mandid a wonderful job at the top of thetennis world as a Grand master andbrought name and fame to India. He kept Indian flag fly high in theInternational chess world.

Vishy Anand went on to win fiveWorld Championships — and morestrikingly, attained distinction inall three formats of the game: clas-sical (played in stately fashion, overmany hours); rapid (where playersget between 10 and 60 minutes); andblitz (a shoot-out that lasts barelya few minutes). Along the way, hebecame India’s first Grand master(the highest chess title) and inspireda chess revolution at home: to thepoint where there are today 65 In-dian Grand masters — one for eachsquare on the chessboard, and thenone more! Even at age 50 (he crossedthat temporal milestone on Decem-ber 11), Anand ranks in the top 15players in a sport where supercom-puters and chess software have ren-dered some old-world game skillsredundant and where Grand mas-ters are getting progressivelyyounger. In every way, it’s been anepic journey, and over such a dis-tinguished career, Anand has welland truly written his name in thestars: in fact, a ‘minor planet’ hasbeen named ‘4538 Vishyanand’ inhis honour.

As much as the book is a delightfor chess lovers, with illustrativegames thrown in to embellish apoint that Anand is making, thechampion has pointedly rendered itaccessible to anyone who wants totake away life lessons. Indicative-

ly, since chess has been remarkablydisrupted by the advent of super-computers and machine learning,Anand’s experience of how he, as adigital migrant, embraced technol-ogy when some of his old-world skillswere rendered redundant hold learn-ing for anyone coping with techno-logical disruption at the workplace.

Mind Master is, in the end, anengrossing read — and not just forchess players. It offers fascinatinginsights into the working of a keen

chess mind that grapples with com-plex ideas farther afield, and dis-tills the learning derived therefromfor those of us who are not similar-ly gifted. Anand’s voice in the nar-rative sounds authentic, which isa tribute to the exertions of sportswriter Susan Ninan, who collabo-rated on the project to map Anand’smind and lay it out for lay readers. It is a must read for the young gen-eration.
