Water drinking breaksRealising that many students do not drink

sufficient water which sometimes leads todehydration, many states in the country havenow made it mandatory to provide ‘waterdrinking breaks’ in schools. The concept ofwater breaks was first introduced in Keralaand later other south Indian states followedsuit including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Te-langana and now even Goa has made it man-datory for schools to introduce two waterdrinking breaks of two minutes duration.

Keeping hydrated is crucial for health andwell being. Around 60 percent of the body ismade up of water. However, many of us, es-pecially children do not consume water orsimply forget to keep themselves hydratedfrom time to time.

Moreover, studies have revealed thatdrinking water can help students in stayingfocused, creative, and energized. The brainworks on a complex electrolyte formula anddepends on suitable hydration to functionproperly. There is a tendency, especiallyamongst the youngsters, to quench thirst byconsuming aerated drinks. While soft drinksmay temporarily relieve thirst, they actual-ly work as a diuretic, making the body losewater faster than it can be utilized. To pro-cess the sugar content of sodas, the body pullsout water from extracellular fluids, thus leav-ing the body less hydrated than before thesoft drink.

While there is no universally agreedquantity of water that must be consumeddaily, as it is dependent on various factorslike body weight, age, climate and daily ac-tivities, it is commonly recommended todrink eight glasses of water of eight ouncesper day. We generally get about 20 percentof our fluid needs from the food we eat andvarious other beverages. However, the re-quirement for the other 80 percent of ourfluids needs to get fulfilled each day fromdrinking pure water. We lose fluids on a con-tinuous basis from sweating, breathing andurinating. When the body loses more waterthan is being replaced, dehydration occursand brain functions get affected. However,as per the doctors, when the brain is operat-ing with plenty of water, students are able tohave greater clarity, creativity, focus andquicker thought process. Drinking adequatewater also prevents urinary track infectionand constipation.

Pure water is the best solution for hydra-tion. It is important to inculcate the habit ofdrinking water right from childhood. Wateris the pre-eminent beverage that can keepthe mind and body energized and operate attheir best. Water drinking breaks should beintroduced by all the states in the schools toensure that children remain hydrated at alltimes. Schools should also spread awarenesson the importance of drinking water to thestudents so that it becomes a habit.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

By Bhavani Swaminathan

Diet plays veryimportant role in ourphysical and mentalhealth status. Manycommon health prob-lems can be prevent-ed or treated by con-sumption of a gooddiet.

Traditional Indianvegetarian diet main-ly consists of legumes, vegetables, milk,curd/yoghurt & clari-fied butter (ghee).Apart from the ingre-dients used in cookingthe different masalasused aids indigestion. Moreover theutensils used in cook-ing also plays a veryimportant role whichin turn has immensehealth benefits. In an-cient times, peoplecooked in earthernpots which is stillpractised in temples

in India. The porosityand natural insulatingproperties ofclay helps heat andmoisture to circulatethroughout the claypots. This causes themoisture and nutrientloss while cooking inclay pots to be muchlower compared tocooking in metalor enamel lined uten-sils.

About the Ingredients

used in food :

1. Clarified Butter(Ghee) : Ghee canbe stored for a longtime without re-frigeration. It isconsidered as puri-fier that absorbsand expels toxinsfrom the body. It isfar superior inproperties & digest-ibility than anyvegetable oil.

2. Dals (Pulses) : Themain source of pro-tein is dal in Indi-an diet. Thereforethey accompanymeals. There aremany ways to pre-pare dal which var-ies from state tostate. The diversityin cooking style isdue to the differencein climatic condi-

tions. The mostpopular and simpleway to make dal inIndia is by simplyboiling it in wateradding salt and tur-meric powder.

3. Flour : These arethe cheapest sourceof calories. It con-tributes as much as

70 to 80 percent ofthe calories in theIndian diet. Floursare also good bind-ing material andenhance the fla-vour. But refinedflour should not beused in the diet asit sticks to the in-testine and causesconstipation.

4. Nuts & Seeds :Nuts & seeds arepopularly used inIndian sweets anddrinks. Nuts are

excellent source ofprotein, fat & cer-tain carbohydrates;they contain vita-mins A,B,C andminerals such ascalcium, phospho-rus, magnesiumand iron. The pro-tein in nuts of highquality are even

higher than that inmilk, meat andeggs. This protein ineasily digestible bythe system as milk.Spices : Spices

makes dals easy to di-gest and removes thegas producing quality.Masala means anynumber of spice combi-nations. Cumin, blackpeppercorn, cardamom(black or green) are thefrequently used spices.Garam masala means“spicy mixture”. It is

used with other spicesor in recipes which areoily and heavy.

Biggest Challenge:When to eat and howmuch to eat?

This is the mostcommon question forwhich most of the peo-ple are looking for theright answer. The con-cept of breakfast, lunchand dinner is takenfrom the west. Thoughit is important to con-sume 3 meals a day tomaintain good health, but the question of thequantity to eaten re-mains unanswered. Asper Ayurveda, theJatharagni (digestivefire) is at its peak aftersunrise and continuestill 3 hours. So the besttime to eat the firstmeal is before 9:30 am.One can eat as much ashe wants including allhis favourite food itemsbecause the food eatenbefore 9:30 am will bedigested very easily, nomatter how muchquantity you have con-sumed. Also the proper-ly digested and assimi-lated food will supplyall the required nutri-ents to each cell of thebody. The second mealshould be taken be-

tween 1:00 pm – 1:30pm and the quantityshould be less com-pared to what wasconsumed in themorning. This is thetime when the“Jatharagni” is slowand the digestionpower is weak. Henceone should not overeat and burden the di-gestion process. Theundigested food willstart turning into tox-ins thereby giving riseto different healthproblems. Hence theafternoon food shouldbe lesser than themorning food. Againthe “Jatharagni” is atits peak during sun-set. So it is advisableto eat dinner beforesunset or maximumhalf an hour aftersunset. Before goingto bed one glass ofmilk should be taken.

If this principle ofeating food is followedalong with somephysical exercise andbreathing exercisethen one can main-tain a good health.

NCP corporators who had joinedBJP are a worried lot now

NAVI MUMBAI: WithShiv-Sena chief Udh-hav Thackeray takingoath as Chief Ministerof Maharashtra, around 49 Corporatorsfrom the NationalistCongress Party (NCP)who had joined theBharatiya Janta Party(BJP) on 11th Septem-ber, 2019 along with theNavi Mumbai’s strongman and the formerGuardian Minister inthe Congress-NCP alli-ance governmentGanesh Naik withpomp, are a worried lotnow. One of the biggestreason cited by Naik forjoining the saffron par-ty ahead of the Maha-rashtra Vidhan Sabhaelections was betterportfolios and politicalprospects. However, this appears to bebleak.

It may be recalledthat after the resultswere announced infavour of BJP-Shiv-Sena and other allianceand the political dramathat followed, there wasno consensus amongthe party over seatsharing. This made the

relationship bitteramong the two old alli-ances. Shiv-Sena thenbroke its 25 years rela-tionship with the BJPand joined hands withNCP and Congress toform the government.

Ganesh Naik, avery senior leader andalso a strongman of the

satellite city, foughtelections on his young-er son Sandeep Naik’sticket from Airoli con-stituency and won witha thumping votes. There were specula-tions that Ganesh Naikwill get good portfolio inthe Maharashtra gov-ernment. Now, thatprospect has received abig jolt.

The future of all the

NCP defectors in thecity also seems to begrim. Dr. Jayaji Nathsenior leader and Cor-portor from BJP now,who is very close to bothGanesh Naik and Shar-ad Pawar said, “WhenGanesh Naik thoughtof joining the BJP par-ty we were skeptical

and asked him to re-think about it. He toowas not so keen on join-ing the BJP party butsince his younger sonSandeep Naik hadjoined BJP, he wantedhis father to join theparty too. The NMMCelections are close athand. We need to workreally hard if we wishto win civic body elec-tion.”

They are not criminals;Drop all charges against them

The 29 Aarey protesters who were arrested onOctober 4 and 5, 2019 and slapped with criminalcharges by the Mumbai police under various sec-tions are not criminals nor are they rioters. They were only peacefulprotesters doing their duty to protect the environment from being dam-aged. Most of them arrested were college students who have only raisedtheir voices to protect the environment from being damaged. The crim-inal charges slapped against them under various sections should be with-drawn immediately as they will not be able to apply for a job nor renewtheir passports or apply for a new one.

History is written in the politics of MaharashtraNobody would have imagined it few weeks ago, but on 28th Novem-

ber history was written in the politics of Maharashtra as never beforeany from the Thackeray family has come into politics directly and hereit was Uddhav Thackeray becoming the first CM from the family ofThackerays. It was always believed that Bal Thackeray never contestedor held a post of office but the remote control of the government re-mained in his hands.

Never did one think Shiv Sena NCP and Congress would join handsto keep BJP out of power, an art well specialised by the latter.

The other historic event would be meeting of Uddhav and Raj Thack-eray. It all depends how this cordial gesture is taken up by both to nar-row the bridge.

How well this government works would depend on the agenda theyfocus upon. If they stick to farmer’s issues, education, unemploymentthey will not only success but will get the support of every section of thesociety. Ànd if they fall into the Mandir Masjid issue and other divisivepolitics they will fail miserably for in that game they will be up againstthe master of these issues viz BJP.

Friends! It is aword with a very beau-tiful meaning behindit. To most of us,friends are known asour pals, buddies oracquaintances. Themore friends we have, the merrier, they al-ways say! The morefriends you have, thewider is your horizon. With the ample pres-ence of social network-ing sites these dayssuch as Facebook,WhatsApp, Linkedinand Twitter, it be-comes much easier tobe connected to peoplefrom the other side ofthe world than it usedto be earlier. With justa few clicks of themouse, you will be-come friends or be con-nected virtually to peo-

Real friends vs. Facebook friendsple from the other sideof the continent.

However, friends, particularly in Face-book and friends in reallife are quite different. On Facebook, yourfriends’ list may con-tain people whom youare completely oblivi-ous to. These are, infact, virtual friends. You have no clue aboutthem and neither dothey. This is due to acertain section of peopleon Facebook today whosimply add friends justto have a large numberof acquaintances in hisor her friends’ list. They do this in order tobe famous, virtually.Wouldn’t anyone find it

a bit awkward if you’rebarely into working lifebut have so-calledfriends from aroundthe world who are en-trepreneurs and assuch?

U n f o r t u n a t e l y,these are usually theones who are victims ofmalice and scams onthe Internet. They ac-cept friends’ requestswithout checking theother person’s profileor background. In fact, these are the ones whothe criminals enjoy tar-geting. A naïve, atten-tion-seeking person isthe easiest target.Even though you mayhave hundreds or eventhousands of friends on

Facebook, nothing canbeat ONE real friend.

Real friends willhelp you out anytime, anywhere and anyhow.“A friend in need is afriend indeed!” so goesthe saying. Realfriends are real indi-viduals whom you seeface-to-face and have aconversation with. OnFacebook, you are notseeing each other, as itis nothing but a virtu-al conversation.

A friend is notsomeone who just com-ments on your rant ora picture of your dog.A real friend calls youup when you’re sick orwhen you’re sad. Afriend is someone who

lives far away, but stillfinds time to visit you.Or a friend is someonewho refuses to move toofar away from you de-spite their plans or de-sires. A real friend issomeone who buys youa Christmas gift andgives it to you onChristmas, not some-one who sends you ane-card. A friend is nota digital text but a faceand a hug and tearsand smiles and reallaughter, not LOL’s. Afriend is someone whowants to remain yourfriend, even when youlose common interestsor common geographyor common ground.

A friend is someone

you can chat withabout movies or otherinteresting topics. Afriend is someone whoasks how you are be-fore telling you aboutthemselves, not some-one who posts theirdaily minutiae on your“wall”. A friend issomeone who gives ev-erything and asks fornothing. Not someonewho simply telephonesyou or sends you anemail when they wantsomething. A friend issomeone who’s happyto sit by your side anddo nothing but justhear you talk.
