 Dear friends,

In this edition of Fellow-ship News, I have someexciting news to sharewith you. But first…It amazes me how much

I can learn about myself as life goes on. One wouldthink that, after forty years of living with myself, thatI’d have “me” all figured out. Yet, there is alwaysmore to discover.

(Boy, that sounds a little self-centered, doesn’t it?Maybe I should reword that…)

I’ve learned, for example, that the way my brain

works is different in some significant ways than theway other brains work. I remember, shortly after wegot married, watching Ginger read a book, watch TV,and talk to a friend on the phone … at the same time! This impressed me almost as much as the time whenwe were dating, when I got to witness her eating a taco

while driving stick-shift. Me, I have more of a one-track mind. My mind

focuses intensely on a given topic or activity. Concen-tration is high; the ability to do two things at once isnot.

Betty Jo reminds me –  constantly – of the time I

was walking out of Polly’s restaurant, and she saw meand said hi to me, and I ignored her. Except that I was-n’t really ignoring her. Honest! Most likely my mindwas focused on something else (like making sure I did-n’t trip on my way out) and I literally did not see her.

(Maybe that’s why I don’t chew gum. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to walk!)

Fortunately, I am part of a congregation that haslearned to love one another, despite our various quirks.Yes, I’m not the only one around here with quirks! Thefolks here have developed a strength in their relation-ships such that they can look past the quirks and love

Week of Compassion & Global

Ministries respond to Earthquake/

TsunamiFollowing the March 11th earthquake and tsu-

nami that struck Japan, the island nation is facingmultiple crises, including the increased threat of ra-diation exposure from several nuclear power plants.

The official death toll has risen to 9,000 people and isexpected to increase.

More than 400,000 people are now living inmakeshift shelters or evacuation centers. Compound-ing the problem is windy and bitterly cold weather, aswell as shortages of water, food and fuel. But thechief concern remains radiation.

The joint Global Ministries of the Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ is working withthe United Church of Christ in Japan (UCCJ). Severalmission appointees serve there, teaching ESL or working with local churches.

UCCJ has established a relief committee whichis currently researching and planning an appropriateresponse. UCCJ has also provided a status update ontheir churches, many of which were damaged or de-stroyed. Your gifts to Week of Compassion havealready gone to support the UCCJ efforts.

Your gifts will also support a collaborative effortbetween our partner Church World Service and theJapan Platform, a coalition of 32 non-governmentalorganizations, government service agencies and me-dia outlets in Japan. CWS will be providing supportand channeling contributions to individual members

of the Japan Platform, and is also prepared to supportefforts of faith-based partners in Japan, including theNational Christian Council of Japan.

This relief work is made possible by your gifts to

Week of Compassion and Disciples Mission Fund.Additional gifts are welcome. Where can you go to hear great preachers like

Fred Craddock and Brian McLaren, and inspirationalspeakers like Children’s Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman? Where can you experienceworship with outstanding musicians like AndraMoran and Michael Morton? Where can you see 13

year-old ballet dancer Madison Oliver (a member of First Christian Church in Orange, CA) perform infront of thousands of people? Where can you meetDisciples from all over North America, and discover what it means to be “a movement for wholeness in afragmented world?”

All this and more will take place at General As-sembly, taking place July 9-13 in Nashville. And if you register right away, you can qualify for special“early-bird” discounts. However, those discountsexpire on April 1. So register today atwww.disciples.org/ga!
