Alone and Alive

As each year ends and a new one begins I search and

pray for verses that will provide spiritual themes for

me for the coming New Year In 2015 my verses all

deal with the practice of solitude

Judges 511 ldquoFar from the noise of archers in the places

of drawing water there shall they rehearse the righteous

acts of Jehovah even the righteous acts of his rule in Israel

Psalm 1167 ldquoReturn to your rest my soul for the LORD

has been good to yourdquo

Isaiah 123 ldquoWith joy you will draw water from the wells of salvationrdquo

The invitation from these verses is quite similar Take time alone for

remembering replenishment and rest There are times when being

alone is the best place to be The benefits when listed are invaluable

Solitude will

Reveal how you are really doing The quiet outside will reveal

the quiet or disquiet within

Help you discover what is most meaningful and important

The unexamined life is not worth living (Socrates)

Give you insight into your character Silence and prayer have a

way of revealing the truth about who you are This is critically

important because ultimately character not competency determines

your capacity

Give you energy Like exercise the discipline of solitude gives you

energy

Let you actually hear from God You can only really hear from

God when yoursquove slowed down enough to listen

Renew intimacy Intimacy isnrsquot possible in a rush True intimacy

(with people or with God) only happens when no onersquos in a hurry

Establish priorities Solitude accelerates clarity

Restore your soul If yoursquove lost your soul solitude will help you

find it

Finding solitude will only be possible if we make it a priority

Creating margin at the beginning or end of the day is a great place to

start A great place to finish is practising the discipline of solitude in the

midst of the ebb amp flow of each and every day

Every year March brings the ever-anticipated Tax Season It is our

desire to try our best to assist you past the paperwork and back into

the focus of ministry This month I have included only one very

important CRA change for clergy I am

available to provide further clarity to the

following or if there is any other way I

can help please feel free to contact me at

dpichettebcpaocorg or 604-533-2232

(office) May God bless you as you head

into this tax season once again

CRA T1223 amp T4 Slip Wording

CRA Change The Canada Revenue Agency has made a change

referring to combining ldquofair rental value and eligible utilitiesrdquo shown

in Box 30 of our T4s Many churches have already revised their

documents as the CRA recommended this prior to making the

official announcement The wording for Form T1223 Clergy

Residence Deduction as well as the T4 slip reporting has changed

tohellipldquoIf you received free accommodation andhelliputilities for a residence

that you did not own or rent the value of both is shown as a taxable

benefit in box 30 of your T4 slip Claim this amount as a deduction at

line 231 of your returnrdquo

The prior edition instructed the taxpayer that their CRD claim

was the T4rsquos box 30 amount (ie the fair rental value of the

employer-provided housing) plus ldquothe part of box 40 that

represents eligible utilitiesrdquo ndash which CRA defines in its

Interpretation Bulletin IT-141R (Consolidated) Clergy Residence

Deduction as ldquoamounts expended for services for electricity heating

(eg gas) and water and sewerrdquo (para 23)

The result of the change is that only the T4 sliprsquos box 30 is now

referenced and not box 40 However it is the combined fair

rental value and eligible utilities that make up the allowable CRD

claim amount in these cases Due to the change in the T1223

formrsquos wording and how information may have been set out in

the T4 the employee should exercise extra care to claim the

correct amount For employers who have not yet filed T4 slips

for 2014 there is an opportunity to ensure the combined fair

rental value and eligible utilities are shown in box 30

Clergy Housing Deduction amp Deductions at Source

Checklist Please be sure to have your job description and fair-

rental value prepared and ready to present to the CRA Some clergy

apply for Deductions at Source where you will need to submit your

job description and figure of fair rental with your application

Others will need to keep this on hand after claiming taxes if they do

not apply for Deduction at Source

The Power Was On At Emerge

An ice storm had knocked down many trees and power in the days

leading up to our weekend conference in Hope BC Thankfully the

power was restored the day before we arrived

Gods power was evident in our

midst as His Holy Spirit stirred many

hearts The weekend brought

together a dozen campuses from

across BC for our largest gathering

yet Author Mark Buchanan spoke

on the theme ldquoBe Still Be Holy

Be Dangerousrdquo Many students were inspired and challenged more

deeply in their relationship with Jesus Some students who are not yet

following Christ are still considering their decision and another student

came to faith over the weekend

Here is a challenge one student brought back for her campus group

ldquoWeve all emerged refreshed from our fantastic weekend at the retreat

The opportunity to refocus on God in such a beautiful place with such

beautiful people is an amazing blessing My prayer now is that we wont let

all that weve learned this weekend slip away but that well keep in the

forefront of our minds the importance of rest and taking the time for the

daily renewal of our pursuit of Gods love Let us be dangerous Let people

say of us lsquothese are those who have turned the world upside

downrsquo (Acts 176)rdquo

Every year we choose a global project at Emerge that students can

invest in We have supported new campus initiatives clean water and

this year to bless aspiring women leaders in

Africa God highlighted the value of women

throughout the weekend A breakout session

taught students the importance of women in

ministry A woman campus pastor was

showcased in another session The Zoe

Project was a God arranged fit for this year

Students gave a record Emerge offering to help

bring life to His precious daughters in Africa

BC Church Building Society Dave Ball

Little is MuchWhen God Is In It

In October 1950 a small group of PAOC laymen from Victoria saw a

need to assist local PAOC assemblies with local church building

projects With district endorsement Mr A D Bridges and Mr Ernie

Hudson established a small lending fund for capital projects

Over these past 65 years the fund has grown considerably and now

is able to offer loans to PAOC churches ranging from $10000 to

$100000 or more

These loans are secured either by a first mortgage or by the

personal guarantees of local church members Loans are arranged at

low interest and are repayable with regular monthly payments as

well as voluntary additional repayments at any time without penalty

If your assembly is considering renovations or major repairs you are

invited to contact the BCCBS for more information Our BCCBS

Secretary-Treasurer Rev Dave Ball will be happy to assist you or

provide further information (dlballbcgmailcom)

Children and Family

Caroline Durocher-Bergeron wwwcarolinebergeronca

Elevate is more than a conference itrsquos a time where children

preteen and family ministry leaders (including parents lay leaders

and pastors) across our nation come together with a united heart

and passion to raise up world changers and a generation of devoted

and courageous followers of Christ Every aspect of Elevate will

feature our theme Above and Beyond and stimulate our faith to

embrace this promise ldquoNow to Him who is able to do above and

beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in

usrdquo (Ephesians 320)

My desire is that in 2015 we will more than ever be connected to

the power of Christ that lives within us We serve a God who is

willing able and mighty to save and rescue this generation May He

stir our hearts and imaginations with the most infinite dreams so

that His glory may shine in our midst

Relax Be refreshed Get inspired Move forward

Elevate provides a space for worship knowing that our ultimate

inspiration comes from God and spending time in His presence

while listening to what He has to say is vital for moving forward

Elevate is also a beautiful convergence of inspiration and hands-on

learning Our learning labs will address some of the most relevant

topics and provide practical solutions to the challenges we face on a

weekly basis Throughout the weekend you will hear stories from

leaders just like you who have seen God move in incredible ways in

their ministry and breaking new ground for the Kingdom of God

God is at work in our nation and He is using kids and preteens in an

incredible and powerful way We are delighted to welcome

JumpStart3 David amp Beci Wakerley from Hillsong Church

Australia and Dr Alan Nelson from KidLead as our guest speakers

this year

Throughout the last couple of years we have heard countless

testimonies from those who attended the 2013 Elevate Conference

affirming that the event was beneficial to their leadership teams and

local ministries Visions were birthed friendships were deepened

and commitment to the ministry was renewed This is why we are

providing a cost effective way to bring your entire team of 10 or

more to Elevate Conference

This is a great opportunity to train and honour your volunteers

they will come home with fresh vision for their Calling and they will

be better equipped to journey with kids in their spiritual walk

God is at work in our nation and He is using kids and preteens in an

incredible and powerful way We are delighted to welcome

this year

Throughout the last couple of years we have heard countless

local ministries Visions were birthed friendships were deepened

and commitment to the ministry was renewed This is why we are
