Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Sarhaad Paar, Rang De Basanti are some of the Independence Day special movies which will be telecast on our Channels in August.

Diya aur Bati is a new series which starts on Star Plus in August. This is the story of a girl named Sandhya, who has a dream of becoming an IPS Officer; and her

struggle with the circumstances to fulfil that dream. Star Plus will have two series coming to an end this month - Aap Ki Kachehri and Gulal.

Rakhi Sawant is back on Imagine Dil Se with a new and light-hearted format of Rakhi Ka Insaaf titled Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaaniyan. The show will have a comic

element on the lines of Movers and Shakers, and will have Rakhi dealing with some of the weirdest cases from all over the country.

Two series on Imagine Dil Se - Beend Banuga Ghodi Chadhunga and Looteri Dulhan have been given a different time slot, so please refer to the program schedule to

see the new timings.

Pavitra Rishta, Ram Milayi Jodi and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs remain high on the popularity chart on Zee TV.

Vipul Gupta, the actor who came to the lime

light with India Calling is back to the small

screen after a long hiatus. Vipul had earlier left

television to concentrate on his Bollywood com-

mitments and had done movies like Ye Saali

Zindagi and Fox.

And now the actor is playing the male lead

in Zee TV's Chhoti Si Zindagi, produced by

Hats Off Production.

Our source tells us, "Vipul will play the role

of Sam post leap. He has just got back from

USA and owns a radio station. He is the flam-

boyant young guy who is very positive. Isha,

played by Toral Rasputra works as an RJ in

this radio station. However, Sam and Isha do

not relate to their past as Isha has settled in

Mumbai with a new identity and is no more

called by her original name".

It's usually tough for an actor to shoot

for an emotional scene, especially when

it is an outdoor sequence shot amidst pour-

ing rain! Now what if this high intensity

emotional scene is to be portrayed by kids,

who otherwise will love to play around

on such a beautiful rainy day?

Well, this is exactly the scenario on

the sets of Zee TV's Chhoti Si Zindagi

which depicts the moving tale of two

sisters Isha and Ira who are left to lead

a life of their own! The show is all geared

up for a 10 year break after which Toral

Rasputra and Leena Jumani will take

over as the grown up Isha and Ira re-

spectively. There will be a very sad end-

ing to the pre leap phase of the story

line with Isha (Richa Mukherjee) and Ira

(Shruti Bhist) getting separated forever.

show "Sanskaar Laxmi",

met with an accident on

the sets of the show. In

one of the scenes,

Shakktii had to teach his

on-screen wife, Veebha

tered on his arms.

Shakktii says, "In real

life, I can cook to live,

which means I can usu-

ally make Maggi, eggs

and tea for myself. Be-

sides that, I don't know a

thing about cooking. Be-

ing a foodie, I had always

wanted to learn cooking

but this incident has left

me with little desire.

Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch

Bahuyien is a light hearted

family drama of an elaborate joint

middle class family and its strict

and disciplinarian mother.

As the formidable matriarch of a

joint Rajasthani family, she has rather

ably held the reins of her household,

made the most significant decisions in the

lives of her husband, her five sons and four

daughters-in-law

The story begins with Mrs. Bindeshwari

Kaushik's search for the fifth bahu for her youngest

son. According to her, an ideal bahu is one who should

be an amalgam of the elements of nature (fire, water, air,

space & earth) akin to the virtues represented by her other four

loving, honest and obedient daughters-in-law.

Delhi-6 attempts to exposes the dual face of a person.

boy "Roshan" of Indian origin, who comes to India for the

first time, to drop his ailing grandmother. She wants to die in

her own soil, and so prepares for her own death. In America

having led a very western lifestyle Roshan wasn't aware

of the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion

and beliefs that an Indian society is filled with. After coming

to India he interacts with his grandmother's neighbourhood

and seamlessly dissolves in as if one of

them. Little does he know that the endear-

ing people including his grandmother have

another face that feeds the devil within.

Ravi Dubey who plays the role of Omkar Dagar in 12/

24 Karol Bagh, lives his lifestrictly according to Buddhistphilosophies.

many of the televisions shows failed to bring in.

After all the toil and hard work the makers and

actors put in, the show successfully completed its

200 episodes.

Most importantly, the show is also seeing the

upward movement of the graph in the ratings

chart every week.

Ridhi Dogra aka Priya of the show ex-

pressed her gratitude on behalf of her and

her husband and co-star in the show

Raqesh Vashisth aka Aditya.

Ridhi says, "I am really very happy that

the show has completed 200 episodes.

This show is extremely special to Raqesh

and me as it brought us together. Though we had

known each other earlier, we gelled well through

Actually one cannot compare Nitish

Bharadwaj against any actor; in fact you

cannot compare Mahabharata with

Dhwarkadheesh. Vishal is a kid now and

he is doing pretty well.

How is your association with Imagine TV?Imagine is a nice channel, they had

wanted me to play this role and I gladly

agreed.

a mythological character may not sound like a good option. But Priya

Bathija, who debuted with "Khwaish", feels that playing Rukmani in

"Dwarkadheesh" on Imagine TV is the opportunity of a lifetime.

The actress says, "People don't know about Lord Krishna's life after

marriage. Everyone just goes on talking about Radha and Krishna. His

wife Rukmani is an avatar of Goddess Laxmi. I feel blessed to play such

a character."


Karmaasa, the first official Punjabi rock band from

Ludhiana is making waves on PTC channel where one

gets an earful of songs from their album, Qaafir, which they

call 'the sound of revolution.'

"Karmaasa is basically an amalgamation of two words:

karma in Sanskrit means actions, while asa means hope, and

is from Guru Granth Sahib's holy scripture, Asa Di Vaar (A

Ballad of Hope). The reference is in the context of doing our

karma and have the will and the passion to do it, no matter

what," says 28-year-old Manpal Singh, who is vocalist, gui-

tarist and music director of the band.

performance in Bollywood when he cho-

reographed Dil to Pagal Hai. Shiamak's

work in Taal, Kisna, Bunty aur Babli, I

see You, Dhoom 2 and the more recent

Taare Zameen Par and Game has re-

defined dancing in Bollywood forever.

Vidya Balan, the lead actress of "Dirty

Picture", had to come out of her com-

fort zone to shoot for a smoking se-

quence in the movie recently. The

actress, while shooting for the

film in Hyderabad, had to enact

a scene in which she had to

actually smoke. Since

Vidya had never

smoked before, she

began to feel uneasy

after her fourth ciga-

rette and started

coughing. This halted

the shoot for a few

minutes.

Once the effects of nicotine

subsided, Vidya managed to re-

sume shooting. Milan Luthria, the

director of the film, gave a green

signal to the shot after multiple

retakes, however, by then Vidya

had already smoked 10 ciga-

Even after 35 years, Mukesh is remembered

by his lovers because of his immortal num-

bers rendered during his three-decade career.

The Russians, even after more than half a

century, still hum with gusto his classics -

Awara hoon and Mera joota hai japani.

Mukesh excelled during his time and de-

spite tough competition, he won the presti-

gious Filmfare award four times for best play-

a single number by Mukesh made the film a

box office hit. The great showman Raj Kapoor

sively. On his demise, Raj Kapoor paid the in-

With a distinctive style and penetrating

golden voice, each song of Mukesh spells

magic. Mukesh never compromised with the

prevalent formula. That is why he not only

placed himself in the souls of Indian fans but

left indelible marks globally. Like a rainbow,

Mukesh had full command over all variety of

SYDNEY: The Australia India Business

Council has launched a new chapter, 'Women

in Business,' as part of its 25th year celebra-

tions held at Hilton here on July 12.

"The Women in Business group will drive

bilateral trade relationships between Austra-

lia and India" said Sheba Nandkeolyar, Chair

of Women in Business in her welcome ad-

dress. "This includes setting up ties and

strategic links with Chambers of Commerce

and Trade Associations in Australia and In-

dia."

The current members are drawn from

various industries ranging from Marketing

& Communications, Cross-Cultural Consult-

ing & Training, Government, Manufacturing

& Sales, and Investment & Venture Capital,

among others. The committee members are

Sanushka Seomangal, Claire Tynan, Naina

Gill, Theresa Assaker and Sheba

Nandkeolyar.

The launch received immense support and

acclaim from business and industry lead-

ers across Australia, especially women

in business who are keen to forge stron-

ger ties between the two countries.

AIBC NSW President, Dipen Rughani

spoke about the changing face of work-

ing class women in India and their spend-

ing power.

The Consul General of India, Amit

Dasgupta highlighted the challenges faced

by seven semi-illiterate women and the

success story of 'Lij jat Papad'

(poppadums), an organisation started in

1950s and run solely by women, which is

now a $80 million (USD) industry world-

wide.

The NSW Minister for Family and Com-

munity Services and the Minister for Women,

Prudence Jane Goward was the Chief Guest

on the occasion. Minister Prudence, who lived

'WOMEN IN BUSINESS'in India for a short period in the 1970s, was

enthusiastic about the initiative and related sev-

eral interesting personal anecdotes during her

speech. She urged women to break the cycle

of disadvantage in the modern business world

and also look at non-traditional businesses to

excel at.

Present on the occasion were several suc-

cessful business leaders, members of foreign

Consulates, Presidents of business associa-

tions and Government representatives.

A panel discussion on "Doing Business with

India" was held. Panel speakers included Larke

Reimer (Head of the Women's Markets Unit,

Westpac Group and chair of Global Banking

Alliances for Women in Banking), Claire Tynan

(Tynan Group of Companies and former CEO

of Mahindra Automotive), Saba Abdi (Founder

The first Murder film had Mallika Sherawat

as the leading lady but the sequel stars

newcomer Jacqueline Fernandez who made

her debut with Aladdin. Emraan Hashmi how-

ever is no stranger to erotic films. He plays

ex-cop Arjun who has crossed over on the

other side of the law and prefers to earn his

living the underhand way. But life begins to

change when a pimp hires him to nab a se-

rial killer who is murdering his girls. Danger

threatens to strike home when the killer sets

eyes on Arjun's girlfriend Jacqueline

Fernandez and bookmarks her as his next

target.

Arjun's search leads him to a psychopath

Dheeraj Pandey (Prashant Narayan), who

mercilessly kills women and girls by cutting

them into several pieces.

After a raunchy item number featuring

Yana Gupta right in the opening credits and

a love making scene between Priya and Arjun,

director Mohit Suri gets to the point with the

main plot of the film. The narrative (which

does get gory at times) is packed with nu-

merous thrilling moments. One wonders how

the film will unfold once Arjun gets hold of

Dheeraj in the first half itself. But there is

enough in store to keep you entertained.

Lovable antics of childrenChillar Party may not be free of the obliga-

tory good versus evil theme which per-

sistently makes its way into this genre (at least

in Bollywood) yet it aims at generating laugh-

ter, without punching you in the gut.

Written and directed by the duo of Vikas

Bahl and Nitesh Tiwari and bankrolled by UTV

Spotboy, Chillar Party got superstar Salman

Khan so excited that he came on board as co-

producer well after the film had got off the

starting blocks. Great judgment - Chillar Party

is indeed a film worth backing

every which way.

It moves from the light-

hearted to the thought-provok-

ing and from the rib-tickling to

the tear-jerking without losing

its equilibrium.

As Chillar Party opens, we

are introduced one by one to

the feisty gang of innocents

around whom the plot revolves.

It is probably as adorable a gal-

lery of characters as any you

will ever encounter in a

Bollywood movie.

The child actors are outright

naturals. They live in Chandan

Nagar colony, a residential com-

plex that is shaken up somewhat when Fatka,

a spunky boy who washes cars for a living,

arrives in their midst with a canine companion,

Bhidu.

Fatka and his dog are outsiders in more

ways than one - they belong to the wrong side

of the social divide - but after the initial run-ins

with the boys of Chandan Nagar, he and his

pooch are accepted as an integral part of the

chillar party.


Prakash Jha directed Aarakshan is a high

voltage socio-political drama based on one

of the most controversial policies of caste

based reservations in government jobs and

educational institutions. Like the majority of

Jha's films, it takes on issues about the society

and political affairs of India.

Aarakshan is the story of Prabhakar Anand

(Amitabh Bachchan), the legendary idealistic

principal of a college who has single-handedly

turned the college into the state's best. It is the

story of his loyal disciple, Deepak Kumar (Saif

Ali Khan) who will do anything for his Sir. Of

Deepak's love for Prabhakar's daughter, Poorbi

(Deepika Padukone), of his friendship with

Sushant (Prateik). It is the story of their love,

their lively friendship, their zest for life, and of

their dreams for the future.

Centered on one of the most controversial

issues of recent years, with the Supreme

Court's order on reservations, the story sud-

denly becomes a rollercoaster ride of high

drama, conflict, and rebellion, which tests their

love and friendship for one another, and their

loyalty to Prabhakar Anand.

During a discussion on the film, Bachchan

quoted a dialogue from the film that goes, "In

India, when we can have the IPS, IAS, IFS

why don't we have an ITSÖ Indian Teaching

Services?" Jha's flick tackles the bane of capi-

tation fees, coaching classes, reservation and

other pertinent issues plaguing the teaching

system in the nation.

Jha's tagline of his flick 'India Vs. In-

dia' also came in for discussion, with

Jha stating "there is one India that has it

all and there is the other India which

does not."

Spate of controversiesLike the controversial subject

of his film, Prakash Jha faced a

spate of contoversies during

the shooting of the film.

Prakash Jha was quite upset because the

"building" would have been deconstructed in

a few days since it was a temporary set.

*Some pro-Dalit groups in Kanpur protested

Saif Ali Khan being cast in the role of a Dalit.

They objected to the actor's royal background

and saw his role of a so-called-Dalit as an

insult to the community.

* The Lucknow University denied permis-

sion to Amitabh Bachchan and Prakash Jha to

visit its campus to promote the film and inter-

act with the students. "Taking into account the

sensitive and controversial

issue on which the movie

DEEPIKA'S ROTISWhile breezing through one of the most diff icult

scenes with Big B in Aarakshan, Deepika froze when she

had to make perfectly rounded rotis.

Embarrassed and irritated, she asked Prakash Jha to change

the menu but he refused saying that the scene must be shot with

you making chapatis. After all this, Deepika said "I was so embar-

rassed. I can make anything but chapatis are some challenge for

me always. It happens in one's life many times that something

which looks quite easy, turns out to be difficult than the rest.

Deepika had no idea beforehand that she will have to make

chapatis. She was stunned when provided with flour for the

shot. Finally, Jha had to personally show Deepika how to make

perfectly-rounded rotis.

I Am Kalam is a film about a poor Rajasthani boy, Chhotu, who is

inspired by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The role of Chhotu has been per-

formed by Harsh Mayar, a Delhi slum boy. The plot revolves around

Chhotu and his strong desire to learn reading.

The film has been been showcased in various film festivals bag-

ging various awards and honors. The film is directed by Nila Madhab

Panda.

Chhotu is an intelligent boy who belongs to a poor family in Rajasthan.

Due to poverty he is forced to find work in a roadside food stall under

the somewhat kind owner, Bhati. Chhotu is quick to learn and im-

presses Bhati with his abilities. Near the food stall is a heritage hotel in

the palace of an erstwhile royal family. Chhotu strikes up friendship

with the lonely prince of the royal family, but the prince is forbidden to

mix with commoners by his reactionary father.

One day Chhotu is inspired by President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on

television. Chhotu changes his name to Kalam and wants to meet the

president. He studies in his spare time and writes a speech for the

prince. The speech wins first prize but when the palace guards search

Kalam's room they find the prince's clothes and Kalam is

framed as a thief. Kalam does not reveal the source of

the clothes so as to protect the prince from his father.

Kalam hitches a ride to New Delhi where he tries

to meet the president. Meanwhile, the prince tells his

father that it was he who gave the clothes to Kalam

and that Kalam wrote the speech which earned first

prize. The prince is sent to find Kalam who is found

near India Gate and brought back home. The

king tells him that he can study in the same

school as the prince.

chances are they'll still be thinking that when

they're older. The more enjoyment they have

eating nutritious food as a baby, the more likely

they are to carry that message through life.

People expected you to be a little un-stable professionally once there was

no 'supporting' superstar.You have to have confidence and belief in

yourself, and know that whatever people say,

no personal equations and friendships can help

you in this industry. The success of a film is in

no one's hands but God's. No support of one

star or one director or one producer can make

any individual actor a star.

You have to connect with the audience;

the audience has to like you. That is something

that cannot be manipulated or fought for or

tried for. Either they like you or they don't. And

you have to know that that is the reason.

It's a very good time for me right now. It's

always been my dream to do a Yash Chopra

romantic film. I remember watching "Veer

Zaara" in 2004 and thinking, I want to be part

of that kind of cinema - and that's happened

now. So I think I have a lot to be happy for.

You captured public imagination in acountry where you hadn't spent a day tillyou were 18 or so?

I actually feel the opposite way! It's very

I always grew up feeling inferior. I alwaysgrew up feeling that I was not attractive,that I was never getting any attention.

And when I came here for the firsttime... I had that sense of - I remember

that so vividly - that people hereactually appreciate me. They think

that I am beautiful

dad is Indian, but I am not consid-

ered very ethnic looking in the in-

dustry. But growing up, I was very

overly aware of the fact that I was

Indian.

I was darker, and all my friends

to feel very out of place. I was

never really noticed -the girls

with blonde hair and blue eyes

got all the attention in school.

I always grew up feel-

ing inferior. I always grew

up feeling that I was not

attractive, that I was

never getting any at-

tention, and that I

was a little different.

And when I came

here for the first

time... I had that sense

of - I remember that so

vividly - that people here

actually appreciate me.

They think that I am beau-

tiful, that I am something

special. And that was the

first time in my life that I did

not feel inferior, for the

first time in my life I felt

very wanted.

METHODSelect tender and small ladyfingers. Wash and wipe them dry

with a clean and absorbent kitchen towel. Trim the stem and the

tip. Grind ginger with peppercorns to a fine paste. Whisk skimmed

milk yogurt. Dry roast gram flour (besan) in a non-stick pan on low

heat, stirring continuously until it gives a roasted aroma. Keep

aside to cool. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add whole red chillies,

cumin seeds and stir-fry briefly. Add green chillies, coriander pow-

der, turmeric powder, roasted besan and stir well. Add trimmed

ladyfingers, salt to taste and cook over medium heat, stirring fre-

quently for five minutes. Stir in the ginger and peppercorn paste.

Reduce heat and add the whisked yogurt, mix well and cook

covered for eight to ten minutes, stirring occasionally or until lady-

fingers are completely cooked. Serve hot.

• Skimmed milk yogurt 1 1/2

cups

• Ginger 1 inch piece

• Black peppercorns 5-6

• Gram flour 1 tablespoon

• Oil 1 1/2 teaspoon

• Whole dry red chillies 2

• Cumin seeds 1 teaspoon

• Green chillies, slit 3-4

• Coriander powder 1 tablespoon

• Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon

• Salt 1 teaspoon

• Fresh cream 1/4 cup

METHODPeel and cut arbi into one inch pieces. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai

and deep fry arbi till crisp and golden brown. Drain on absorbent

paper and set aside. Halve the onions and boil them in two cups of

water till soft. Drain out excess water, cool and grind to a smooth

paste. Dry roast poppy seeds and then soak in water for half an

hour. Grind to a smooth paste. Whisk the yogurt along with red

chilli powder, cumin powder and turmeric powder. Heat four table-

spoons of oil in a pan.

Add green cardamoms, when they start to change colour

slightly, add boiled onion paste and sautÈ till light golden brown.

Add ginger and garlic pastes and coriander powder. Mix well. Stir

in poppy seed paste and cook for a

minute. Add the whisked yogurt mix-

ture and bring the mixture to a boil. Add

fried arbi, nutmeg, garam masala powder

and salt. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid

and simmer for thirty minutes.

Alternatively, cover the pan with aluminum

foil or seal the lid with wheat flour dough, so

that the aroma is contained in the pan and does

not escape. Just before serving open the lid

and stir in fresh cream.

My exercise regime is not fixed

as whenever I get bored, I

change my form of workout. But

then, I keep an active lifestyle, so I

can afford to not hit the gym ev-

eryday. Usually, I head to the gym

for about two weeks, daily for an

hour. Since I have always been fit,

I don't stress much on cardio. More-

over, I get bored running on the

treadmill. Instead, I prefer doing light

weights and sometimes, use the

elliptical machine. On the other two

My DietI'm a non-vegetarian who doesn't eat red meat. I

eat lot of fish and chicken, besides soups, vegetables

and fruits like papayas, strawberries, etc. I don't

believe in dieting and have a balanced meal. Also, I'm

not one of those people who totally avoid carbs. I

have carbs in the form of wholegrains products. But

I have two vices: I'm addicted to diet cola and choco-

lates. I'm not into protein shakes but I do take vitamin

supplements for three months, and after a gap of

another three months. I do this because taking too

lose weight on my cheeks! I have tried do-

ing facial exercises and make funny faces

in front of the mirror, but it hasn't really

helped.

My StrengthsMany people say that I have a flat

stomach. I don't do any crunches or

go on diet for it. My upper body is

fine, so I pay more attention to my

lower body. I believe I have good

arms. Also, I do not have weight

issues as my weight has been

almost constant, fluctuating

from 49 to 50 kgs for the

past 15 years.
