Navin M Raheja, Chairman & ManagingDirector, Raheja Developers Ltd. is a wildlife enthusiast and a passionate photog-
rapher. In the past 35 years, he has made severalcontributions in the field of conservation at variouslevels. A former Member of Project Tiger's Steer-ing Committee, under the Ministry of Environmentand Forests, he worked persistently to ensure that
the big cats survived in India.He is also Chairman, WildlifeConservation Society of India.Being one of the leading de-velopers in the country, Raheja has a holistic vision.He believes that development and protection ofenvironment can happen simultaneously.
For the past 30 years, Rahejas have been con-tributing to the cause of wildlife and environment.Be it a fight to rehabilitate Gujjars of Rajajji Na-tional Park in Uttarakhand or picking up vital issuesin other parts of India. On May 18, 1985, the re-port of a tiger poisoned in Rajaji Park was front-paged by the Times of India. This incident triggereda change in the system, with Mr Navin M Rahejabeing appointed in the steering committee of theProject Tiger of Government of India.
He sacrificed this post subsequently for the sakeof better wildlife management, when he filed pub-lic interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court overthe casual manner in which something as sensitiveand crucial as wildlife was being treated at variousGovernment levels. The same PIL, incidentally,sparked off several landmark rulings and directivesby the Supreme Court in the years to come leadingto better and more effective systems being placedin the Government machinery. This included stop-page of work on a State highway that was leadingthrough Corbett Tiger Reserve which would haveresulted in a disaster for the most premium Na-tional park. It also led to changing the system offunding and periodicity to all the national reservesacross the country.
As a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ac-tivity of the company, a subsidiary Raheja Produc-tions was formed. This new subsidiary will cover allthe aspects of conservation and wildlife from pro-fessional hi definition format to spread awarenessof the importance of wildlife and forest conserva-tion to every Indian. This will be done through newschannels as well by assisting the forest authorities inRajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand forthe survival of tigers, leopards, elephants and otherendangered species.

METHOD
Peel the grapefruit and remove thewhite pith. Separate into segments,remove the seeds and place in abowl. Add red chilli powder,crushed black peppercorns, blacksalt, chaat masala and mix well.Add mint leaves and mix. Transferonto a serving plate, garnish witha mint sprig and serve immediately.

Sieve flour with cinnamon powder andbaking powder. Add lemon rind to it andmix. Keep it aside. Soak chopped al-monds, tuttifrutti, glacecherries, wal-nuts, mixedp e e l s ,cashewnuts,raisins and cur-rants in rum.Preheat oven to 180?C. Grease a caketin. Break eggs and beat them with va-
nilla essence. Cream butter with one anda quarter cups of brown sugar till it is softand light in colour. Add honey and mix.Make caramel with the remaining brownsugar and a little water. It should be black-ish in colour. Mix the beaten eggs withthe creamed butter and sugar and mixgently. Add the flour mixture and mix witha light hand. Strain the caramel into thesoaked fruits and mix well. Add it to thecake batter and mix gently. Pour the bat-ter into the prepared cake tin. Bake at180?C for thirty minutes. Reduce the tem-perature to 160?C and bake further forforty-five minutes. When done take it outof the oven and leave it on a rack to cool.Cut into slices and serve.
