tion of strength here.

But despite this, the fine

print clause is never high-

lighted when production com-

panies brag about these fig-

ures: that the channel will

bring down the price if a film

does not perform well at the

box-office!

The show called Super Santas on UTV Stars is absorbing because of two main

ingredients - a new celebrity every time and secondly, it's a peek into relationship

issues of commoners. Sometimes it makes you relate to them or makes you realise

what to or what not to do! It's more refreshing than any of the recent shows on air.

The concept is great as superstars here are acting as agony aunts. They hear,

analyse and help to get at that 'happy ending'. One of those conspiracies where

everyone wants you to believe that 'happily ever after' is a true phenomenon. Also

one of the interesting things about this show is that it's not just estranged lovers,

but also friends, cousins, neighbours, etc.

vor India is over the moon after winning

her maiden reality show. She was voted

for, by the jury members and it was no doubt

an extremely proud moment for her.

Raj Rani says "Mein definitely bahut

proud feel karti hoon ki meine Survivor India

jeet liya. Earlier when I had just gone on the

show, I did not think I would win. I had gone

with the intention of showing others that a

girl too is strong and can accomplish every-

thing that she sets her mind to. While on the

island, I have bonded with a lot of people

through all the difficulties that we

have faced. I am glad that I was

able to prove myself in the indi-

vidual challenges. There was

tough competition from others

who were good too but I am

very happy that I have competed

with them and won."

SPECIAL 3D STAGEat Star Parivaar AwardsI

t was a grand set - made like a fort. But the

stage of the star-studded Star Parivaar

Awards 2012 looked mesmerising with spe-

cial 3D projections and visual effects. The

event was held at Andheri Sports Complex.

The set, put up by production designer Omung

Kumar, set the right mood for the evening, but

it was the 3D projection stage that stole the

show.

According to Star India CEO Uday Shankar,

the stage replete with special effects was a

reflection of the channel's philosophy of

"Rishta Wahi, Soch Nayi".

The Star Parivaar Awards 2012 saw talent

from the channel's shows being awarded

across various categories like favourite beta,

favourite beti, mazedaar sadasya, favourite

Behan and favourite bhabhi.

Fans waited to get into the venue for a

glimpse of their favourite actors, who came

to the event dressed as their characters.

The event started with a performance of

actors from Star Plus' most popular shows -

"Ye Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai", "Diya Aur Baati

Hum" and "Saath Nibhana Saathiya".

In his welcome speech, Shankar said: "It

is our 10th year and it feels great to see the

channels, shows and actors becoming popu-

lar not only in India but abroad too. And look-

ing at the increasing popularity, this year we

have a special nayi soch award."

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to make his debut televi-

sion show for Star Plus for which renowned names

have been roped in. Sources confirm that Jen-

nifer Winget will play the main lead while

Monica Bedi will play a negative role. Other

names include Yatin Karyekar, Chetan

Pandit, Ragini Shah and Hitesh Chauhan

of Star Plus' Perfect Bride fame.

Gautam Rode, who was last seen as

Vineet Saxena, Richa Thakral's (Mona

Wasu) NRI fiancÈ in Colors Parichay

Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka, will

play the main lead in the

show. He will be seen op-

Shakuntalam's new show on Star

Plus is based on a real life story in

Delhi. The main lead is likely to be

Deepak Wadhwa who played the

character of Abhishek in Star One's

Dhoondh Legi Manzil Humein. The pilot

of the show has been shot and the

show may go on air from June.

Deepak Wadhwa said, "Yes I have

been approached for the role but

nothing has been confirmed."

TV show Sach Ka Saamna has re

turned for a third innings.

Hosted by actor Rajeev Khandelwal, the

producers of the show, which is a desi

version of American game show, The Mo-

ment Of Truth, aim to bring back some edgy

material that made the first season a hit.

The third season comprises 36 epi-

sodes featuring among others Yuvraaj

Parashar, Nigaar Khan and Ali Merchant. It

deals with extra-marital affairs, illegitimate

children and staged weddings.

Producer Siddhartha Basu says the new

series has returned to its original format. "It

will explore the personal and psychologi-

cal space of the contestants." Basu reiter-

ated that the onscreen drama is not

scripted. "The show will be about real

people revealing their issues. Nothing has

been scripted. It is very important for us to

be authentic," he says.

in an episode in Imagine's Seeta Aur

Geeta, produced by Bohra Brothers.

The actress will be seen in the third epi-

sode which will also mark the entry of the

protagonist Raka aka Gaurav Dixit.

The young lad had always dreamt of a

particular girl, and Shweta happens to be

exactly like the girl of his dreams. Gaurav

Dixit who plays Raka in the show, says,

"Shweta plays a girl who seeks help, and I

make my entry in typical hero style and save

her. She is being attacked by a mob of

gundas, and cries for help. I end

up bashing all the guys and sav-

ing her. She thanks me for ev-

erything and I fall for her. But

the climax is that she ends

up saying, 'Hum jaise behnon

ko tumare jaise bhai k i

zaroorat hai', and I have a

heart break (smiles)".

Jamuna Paar

Jamuna Paar, produced by Rajan Shahi,

has introduced a new face to television.

The show sees Vidhi Parekh as the female

lead.

Using a dupe in television is common but

we hear that Vidhi Parekh's voice has been

dubbed for the show. Vidhi's original voice

is not being used in the show and the face

behind the voice is none other than Neha

Sargam who made her debut with Rajan

Shahi's Chand Chupa Badal Mein as Nivedita

and who is now seen in Imagine's Haar

Jeet. Neha is doing the dub as Vidhi is new

to the industry and is still learning voice

modulation."

Vidhi who confirmed the news, "Yes

it's true that my voice is being dubbed by

someone else. I don't know who is dub-

bing for me.î

LEAD VOICE ISDUBBED

One of the actors in Chandragupta Maurya

has given notice to the production house

about leaving the show.

Rohit Purohit who is playing the charac-

ter of Bhadrasaal in the show is planning to

leave. It is a mutual decision between Rohit

and the production house as initially the char-

acter of Bhadrasaal was a

cameo which got extended.

About his experience so far, he says,

"There is a lot of difference in acting and

anchoring. I feel acting is quite easy as com-

pared to anchoring. While anchoring we have

to be very spontaneous and impromptu. As

far as acting

goes, you get

Sonu Sood has come a long way. But he still

refuses to take it easy when it comes to work.

He is fetching well-etched roles and signing mean-

ingful scripts both in Bollywood and down South. In

Jalandhar to host the PTC Punjabi Music Awards,

the actor gets nostalgic about his early days and his

love for everything Punjabi.

Sonu chuckles, "I headed straight to my home-

town Moga where I spent quality time with family

and friends. It is cathartic to relive the time spent

with my parents and sister. I also went to my school."

Sonu, who has earlier hosted Miss India pag-

eants, says, "This is the first big Punjabi event that I

am hosting. I am pretty excited because Punjab and

Punjabiyat is very dear to me. I love to switch to the

Punjabi mode, something I can't do in Mumbai."

The actor, who was appreciated for his negative

role in Dabangg, is a big Punjabi music fan. "I started

my career with Punjabi music videos for albums by

singers such as Gurdas Maan and late Surjit

Bindarakhia. Punjabi music of all kinds is close to my

heart. Whenever free, I tune in to the latest Punjabi

music and also catch songs and films on Punjabi

channels."

Sonu has also launched his home production,

Shakti Productions, and is producing a film Lucky

Unlucky. "It stars Mallika Sherawat opposite me. It is

a comedy based on the Jat culture of Haryana,"

informs Sonu.

In an interview she said, "It's the most

amazing feeling that people are responding

to me and I really want to do a good job with

this movie. When people watch the film, I

want them to forget about Sunny Leone and

focus on the character.

I want to be a believable character, be-

cause "Jism 2" has a great script and story.

Of course, I know that the people who're

going to watch the movie are going because

of my name and who I am. I hope it's some-

thing they look past and see me as some-

one who wants to work hard. I have had

the most amazing experience with my new

fans here. It could have gone one or the

other way for me. I don't know if I got lucky

or people just liked me. And as far as ac-

ceptance from Bollywood is concerned, if

my fans love me and see the movie, then

that's all the acceptance I need. I can't take

one man's opinion and let it hurt me.

DEBUT JITTERS

It's my first movie and I keep thinking to

myself, how many actors do I know out

there whose first movie was the most amaz-

ing thing that people have seen? It's hard! You

watch the first movie that Angelina Jolie made

or Shah Rukh Khan made. Was it amazing?

Probably not. As hard as I am on myself in

being a perfectionist and doing a good job, I

also understand the realism of that fact.

LOSING WEIGHT

It's not so much about losing weight,

but I want to look my best. I'll still go and

have a plate of French fries, but if I have

10 plates of that it's probably not a good

idea.

I want to be abelievable character,

because "Jism 2" has agreat script and story. Of

course, I know that thepeople who're going to

watch the movie aregoing because of myname and who I am

The Ghanta Awards are a desi version of

Awards were given in 13 categories includ-

(`Ready` and `Thank You`) and worst film to

`Ra.One`.

JNU GIRLSonam Kapoor has landed the role of a

Varanasi girl, who studies in the

capital's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU),

in "Raanjhanaa". She is cast opposite south-

ern star Dhanush.

Dhanush plays a local Varanasi boy.

Sonam is now spending time on the JNU campus to grasp the conduct and ideology of

students there.

"The culture of education at the JNU is radically different from other universities in

Delhi and across the country. At JNU students, both male and female, are very politi-

cally aware," said a source from team of "Raanjhanaa".

Sonam does not really play the quintessential Varanasi girl. Her character is that of

a local girl who has been to college in Delhi for three years, and returned to her home

town as quite the sophisticated small-towner with an acquired metropolitan air.

At first the director was not sure if Sonam could carry off the role. But after

meeting her, he was convinced. "I am bowled over by her commitment to get the

"In the 1960s, when Helen aunty used to

do a song, my mom has told me, that she

used to get scared and used to say 'Oh my

god, Helenji is going to do a song in our

So she always knew she might not be

noticed (in the film), given Helen aunty's

personality and the command that she re-

spected," said Kareena.

"I just find something very derogatory

about songs being called item numbers. I

wish people just refer to them as just songs

because songs make our Hindi films. They

are what make our films global.

"I'm only 21, so I'm not going to rush into

anything just yet. I think it's way too early to

Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif's new

film has been given the title London Ishq.

The Yash Chopra-directed romance sounds

too similar to her upcoming project Ishqk in

Paris.

"No filmmaker would want similar-sound-

ing titles to arrive so close to each other," a

source said. "And though Preity's film will

arrive first, Chopraji's film is already making

a big splash and will create much more hype

closer to its release."

Although Yash Raj Films is not expected

to officially unveil the London Ishq title until

the start of the movie's second UK shooting

schedule in June, its early leak has gener-

ated widespread discussion.

Elegant, reticent, accommodative, sensible and uncomplaining is Jaya

Bhaduri for you. Born on 9th April. 1948 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh to

a journalist father, she got her academic attainment from St. Joseph, Bhopal.

A gold medallist from Films & Television Institute of India, Pune, she debuted in a

supporting role in Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar-1963, but her title role in Guddi-1971

Housefull 2... The Dirty Dozen is the

second super star packed instalment

in the Housefull franchise. It is the

story of four fathers, four daugh-

ters and four prospective sons-in-law and as

the second half of the title suggests, they are

the dirty dozen.

Each father wants his daughter to marry

the richest son-in-law. Each daughter thinks

she is marrying the richest son-in-law. Each

son-in-law is pretending to be the richest son-

in-law. Each character is flawed, unscrupu-

lous and extremely entertaining.

However, none of these people can stand

each other and all of them are under one roof,

in one house as the first half of the title sug-

gests - Housefull.

Director Sajid Khan says although

Housefull 2 is a comedy, shooting for it was

hardly a holiday experience for him as it is his

hardest film till date.

"Time and again I hear directors claim that

making so and so film was akin to a holiday

for them. I never experienced any such joy

during the film. While in Heyy Babyy as well

as Housefull I was having a good time during

their making, in case of Housefull 2 my con-

centration has been on ensuring that audi-

ence have a good time. This has been my

hardest film till date," Sajid said.

The film, sequel to the 2010 Housefull, is

also the biggest film ever mounted by pro-

ducer Sajid Nadiadwala and the director said

that it is much bigger in all aspects than the

first instalment. "While the screenplay is wa-

ter tight, the presentation is on a much bigger

canvas as well. In fact the budget here is twice

as that of Housefull while the scale is four

times bigger," Khan said.

Housefull 2 features actors from the origi-

nal like Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh along

with new additions John Abraham, Asin,

Jacqueline Fernandez, Zarine Khan, Shazahn

Padamsee and Shreyas Talpade.

It also stars veteran actors such as Mithun

Chakraborty, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and

Boman Irani in supporting roles.

"Nadiadwala and I often discussed that this

was a huge decision to make a film of this

scale and cast in today's times. Fortunately

finish the film in time. With so many actors

working for the first time with each other, the

film could have gone in the making for a year

and half," Sajid said.

Housefull 2 has been shot at the Burghley

House in UK, the same castle where the Holly-

wood movie Pride and Prejudice based on Jane

Austen's Victorian novel was shot.

The director says, "One of my characters

in the film is a billionaire from UK so I needed a

splendid house. So after many days of recce

and hunting and visiting almost 250 castles in

different areas, we decided to go ahead with

this one in Peterborough." Describing the castle,

Sajid says, "It's a 400-year-old palace. I liked

the structure, the scale of the place and the

ancient charm it had."

Ferrari Ki Sawaari, A Vidhu Vinod Chopra pro-

Starring Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani, it is a

film driven by only story. In a cinema where flesh

rules, it is indeed a gutsy move by the legendary

the life of three men - albeit from three different

generations. Add to it the fact that this is

Sharman's first movie playing lead.

Ferrari Ki Sawaari revolves around

a child, a father, a grandfather and their

professional (Sachin Khedekar) from

his workaholic stage where he always

makes him understand the importance of

living life wholeheartedly. Overall the film

is a feel good cinema suiting all ages.

Unexpectedly, the market of women-centric films is turning out to

be a bankable genre. Kahaani is a commanding story, has an

authoritative central character, has several dominant and thought-

provoking moments, which makes it an all-persuasive film.

Vidya Bagchi [Vidya Balan] arrives in Kolkata from London to find

her missing husband. Seven month pregnant and alone in a festive

city, she begins a relentless search for her husband. With nothing to

rely on, except fragments from her memories about him, all clues

seem to reach a dead end when everyone tries to convince Vidya

that her husband does not exist. She slowly realizes that nothing is

what it seems. In a city soaked in lies, Vidya is determined to unravel

the truth about her husband - for herself and her unborn child, even

at the cost her own life.

Sujoy Ghosh, with the skills of a master storyteller, amalgamates a

human story in a thriller format. There is a certain uninhibited genuine-

ness in Sujoy's direction. The writing is outstanding with aptitude and

deliberation to specifications.

Riding high on the success of the

runaway hit Yamla Pagla

Deewana, Samir Karnik comes up

with Chaar Din Ki Chandni, a film that

makes no pretensions about its es-

capist fare.

The movie is set against the back-

drop of Rajasthan, during the course

of a four-day wedding. It orbits

around a Rajput family unit

[Anupam Kher, Anita Raaj,

Chandrachur Singh, Mukul Dev,

Sushant Singh, Tusshar] and a

family from Punjab [Om Puri,

Farida Jalal, Kulraj Randhawa].

Tusshar is a Rajasthani who loves

Kulraj, a Punjabi. But the patriarch of

the family [Anupam Kher] is a staunch Rajput, which

prompts Tusshar to hide Kulraj's identity. All hell

breaks loose when the truth is out!

Like his previous film, Karnik reserves the best

for the second hour. In fact, the first hour doesn't

quite work. After the interval however, it is a zany

and madcap ride, replete with humorous gags, daft

situations and uproarious dialogue. The entire Pa-

ppi Sardar episode, though asinine, is amusing.

At heart, Chaar Din Ki Chandni is a love

story, but Karnik sprinkles the plot with ingre-

dients that tantamount to entertainment.

Tusshar is at his boisterous best here. He is

vibrant, energetic. Kulraj is a livewire and reminds

you of Preity Zinta.


He can't dance and therefore

is not a regular in mainstream

cinema. But IRRFAN KHANis a favourite of the

niche cinema.

After Maqbool you were asked you can'tbe comfortable in song-and-dance rou-tines?

When I first started in films, I did that fluffy

stuff, but I never really enjoyed it. So this is a

choice in many ways, I'd say… I agree, it never

came to me naturally…This mainstream vs niche thing, you can

see it as a conflict, but I am trying to bridge it. I

am also trying to do entertaining stories. I want

to entertain people, but with some substance.

Whatever role I get I try to do well in it.

I'm doing something right, I think. We are the

largest filmmaking nation but our movies and

even our superstars don't come within sniff-

ing distance of critical appreciation such as

the Oscars most of the time. Does our song-

and-dance cinema have the potential to cross

international boundaries, like so few of our

actors have?

If they get the right directors. The director

creates the story, he fits you there. There

are so many actors who can do wonders if

put into the right hands. Correct casting is

critical.

But it's not their - the director's - need.

It's my need. If I'm doing a film in two

months, and it is giving me a lot of money

- and then there's a film where I am

getting one-fourth of the money, and

it takes 5 months of my time, but it's a

role like "The Namesake", I'll take

that. That's a choice I have to

make.

But why that work came to

me in the first place - whether

"The Namesake" or others -

I cannot decipher that. I am

incapable and too limited

to be able to really un-

derstand that.

Danny Boyle saidyou have "an in-stinctive way offinding themoral centre ofany character".

He wanted

to make

a villain but I found something in the charac-

ter. There was a moral justification for the

character's actions, which was not there in

the script, he was just a haraami. And Danny

could see what I was doing. I think that's

why he said that. They are very sharp people.

And Danny is perhaps the sharpest person I

have met. Very healthy, psychologically, very

powerful.

How's it to get something like a PadmaShri?

It's not a thing, please, it's an honour. It is

something I cherish and I really felt good

about it. My mother-in-law cried

when she heard the news;

declined to comment, while Randeep

replied, "Many of my friends and family

INGREDIENTS• King fish (surmai)

fillets, cut into fingers

600 grams

• Red chilli powder

1 tablespoon

• Salt to taste

• Carom seeds

(ajwain) 1 teaspoon

• Ginger paste

2 tablespoons

• Garlic paste

2 tablespoons

• Lemon juice

1 tablespoon

• Gram flour (besan)

1 cup

• Oil to deep fry

• Egg 1

• Chaat masala

1 teaspoon

• Lemons, cut into

wedges 2

METHODTake the fish fingers

in a bowl. Add red chilli

powder, salt, carom

seeds, ginger paste,

garlic paste, lemon

juice, gram flour and

mix well. Set aside. Heat suf-

ficient oil in a kadai. Break an

egg into the fish mixture and

mix. Put the fingers, a few at

a time, into the hot oil and

deep fry till almost done. Drain

and place on an absorbent

paper. Deep fry again just be-

fore serving till golden and

crisp. Drain and place on an

absorbent paper. Serve hot, sprinkled with chaat masala and lemon wedges.

STUFFED PANEER POTATOESNorth Indian Cooking Recipe

INGREDIENTS• 5-6 medium potatoes

• 1 cup grated or crushed

paneer

• 4-5 green chillies

• 1" piece ginger

• 2-3 cloves garlic

• 1 crushed red chilli

• 1 sprig spring onion finely chopped

• 1 tbsp butter or ghee

• 1 tsp soya sauce

• 1/2 tsp sugar

• Salt to taste

METHODWash and peel the potatoes raw. Pressure

cook for one whistle only.

Cut a coin on the potato vertically and scoop

out the inside leaving a thick wall.

Mix the scooped potato, paneer, green chillies

(optional) salt well.

Carefully stuff the mixture in the potatoes close

mouth with the coin - shaped lid. Heat ghee or

butter; add the crushed chilli, garlic and ginger.

Fry for a minute. Add the spring onion and

sauce, sugar (optional) and salt.

Carefully slide potatoes in and see that they

are coated with the seasoning.

Before serving transfer carefully to casse-

role and bake in a hot oven for 7 to 8 minutes.

Serve hot with roti or rice or dinner bread roll. I

am sure everyone in the family will love this recipe.

health go hand in hand but it's a little more

important for me to remain in a good state of

mind. When my mind is relaxed, I look and feel

"Whenever I have the time, I go to the gym

where I walk on the treadmill. I don't gain weight

because I'm usually quite careful about what I

eat. I avoid oily food but I can't resist desserts

and chocolates and I don't deprive myself of

either.

"When I feel I'm on the verge of gaining

weight I change my diet and switch over to

foods like steamed vegetables," says Riya.

She strives to have a positive attitude in

life. "Though I'm not very good at it, I try to

avoid stress as far as possible. Stress shows

on your face. Work-out, eat healthy and think

positive - that's my principle in life."

BEAUTY REGIME:I never sleep with my make-up on. I use

expensive skin products. I use Neutrogena

cleanser for removing make-up. For skin, I use

La Mer moisturizing cream. In make-up, I use

sure that the lip brushes, make-up sponges

and blushers are washed after every two

days. I oil my hair regularly with olive oil, coco-

nut oil or almond oil.
