TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Rejoice and be glad for I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of nations like an overflowing torrent (Isaiah 66:10‐14c). Psalm — Let all the earth cry out to God with joy (Psalm 66). Second Reading — May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14‐18). Gospel — Jesus sends his disciples out in pairs to bring his peace and proclaim the kingdom of God  (Luke 10:1‐12, 17‐20) [1‐9]. The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION If you are over 65 years old, you probably remember Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Venerable Fulton Sheen was an American bishop who became known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. In fact, in the 1950s into the 1960s, he may have been the most recognizable Catholic in the United States.  

Sheen once said, “Show me your hands. Do they have scars from giving? Show me your feet. Are they wounded in service? Show me your heart. Have you left a place for divine love?” In many ways that statement parallels  something St. Paul writes in our Second Reading from his letter to the  Galatians: “From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.” St. Paul is saying the same thing as Archbishop Sheen — that is, “Do our lives reflect the presence of the Lord? Are we living as good stewards, as disciples, such that we, too, bear the marks of Jesus?”  

We are not speaking of real scars, but we are talking about how the Lord has called us to follow Him, has asked us to take up the cross and follow Him as a  matter of fact. If we strive to give, to serve, and to have faith as Sheen indicates, then we, too can rejoice as the Lord says to us, “Your names are written in heaven.” We are called, and we need to respond to that call.

REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL Si tiene más de 65 años de edad, es probable que recuerde Arzobispo Fulton Sheen. Venerable Fulton Sheen era un obispo estadounidense que se hizo  conocido por su predicación y sobre todo su trabajo en televisión y radio.De hecho, en la década de 1950 en la década de 1960, que puede haber sido el más  reconocible Católica en los Estados Unidos.  

Sheen dijo una vez, "Muéstreme sus manos. ¿Tienen cicatrices  de dar? Muestrame tus pies. Están heridos en  servicio? Muestrame tu corazón. ¿Ha dejado un lugar para el amor divino "En muchos sentidos, esta  afirmación es paralela a algo St. Paul escribe en la  Segunda Lectura de la carta a los Gálatas:" De ahora en adelante, que nadie crea problemas para mí; . Porque yo llevo las marcas de Jesús en mi cuerpo "St. Paul está diciendo lo mismo que el Arzobispo Sheen ‐ es decir," ¿Nuestras vidas reflejan la presencia del Señor?¿Estamos viviendo como buenos administradores,  como discípulos, de tal manera que nosotros, también, llevan las marcas de Jesús? "  

No estamos hablando de las cicatrices reales, pero  estamos hablando de cómo el Señor nos ha llamado a seguirle, nos ha pedido que tomar la cruz y seguirle como una cuestión de hecho. Si nos esforzamos para dar, servir, y para tener fe como Sheen indica, entonces nosotros también podemos regocijarnos como dice el Señor a nosotros, "Sus nombres están escritos en los cielos." Estamos llamados, y tenemos que responder a ese llamada.

Faith Formation for Children PreK through 8th Grade 

 

Registration Open for 2016‐17 Join us for a joyful and fun‐filled year of learning about our faith, both in the classroom and at our wonderful seasonal events! Registration is open for Sunday  religious education classes starting in the fall for PreK through 8th grade. Registration packets are at the church entrance, or contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org.  

First Communion for ALL GRADES Preparation for sacraments is part of our 2nd grade Faith Formation classes, but our program warmly  welcomes older children seeking sacraments (even baptism) through 8th grade.  Contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org.  

Share your Time and Talent! Teaching children about the faith is a rewarding and uplifting experience.  We have volunteer openings in our Faith Formation program at the primary level.  Co‐teaching with a friend or spouse is also an option. Training and curriculum are provided, as well as teen aides in the classroom, and support from a dynamic catechetical team.  Teens, we need you too!  We have an awesome Teen Aide Team—great for college apps! 

Prayer Ministry What’s Prayer Ministry ? A team of two or three trained prayer ministers will be with you when it is your turn.  While you wait, relax and rest in the Lord's presence, pondering what the Lord has to say to you.  Know that Jesus loves you, and wants to heal you physically, spiritually, and emotional‐ly.  Everything the prayer ministers do or say is based on Scripture and the tradition of the church.  It is  normal that the team members who pray with you will ask to place their hands on your shoulders while they pray.  Scripture refers to this as “the laying on of hands.”  (Next St. James Quarterly Healing Mass: Wednesday, July 29, 2016)

Office for Priestly Vocations LEARNING ABOUT THE PRIESTHOOD On Saturday, July 16th, 2016 the Diocese of San Diego is hosting an Explorer Day for those men who are  interested in exploring a possible vocation to the priesthood.   

The day will be held at St. Francis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego from 8:30a.m. to 3:00p.m.  If living a life of service for Christ and the  people of God is attractive to you, take advantage of the opportunity to attend this upcoming Explorer Day. Pick up an application at your parish office or call Fr. Lauro Minimo at St. Francis Center at (619) 291‐7446. 

On August 12 & 13, the Academy of Our Lady of Peace will host its first annual Alumnae Reunion Weekend,  including two days of reunion events for OLP graduates of all class years. All alumnae are encouraged to come back to campus to celebrate, to reminisce, and to see what’s new at their beloved alma mater. To learn more about the weekend event schedule and to register,  visit OLP’s Website: aolp.org.

In this month of July dedicated to the  Most Precious Blood of Jesus, grant us the wisdom  to recognize that through his gift of the Eucharist there is but one cup of  covenant and communion.  

Give us the courage to magnify your presence in word and deed.  

And through your Spirit teach us to live, no longer for ourselves, but in Christ Jesus who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary.  We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.  The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world.  Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

PEACE  

The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today’s readings: peace is  relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a  handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words.  

The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the “LORD’s power shall be known to his servants” (Isaiah 66:14c).  

The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the “peace and mercy” on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a  feeling of peace that will rest on those who  accept his disciples and their message.  

Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with  others.
