Fr. Gerard’s Corner They say that naming something can give you power over it. The unclean spirit in Mark’s Gospel tries to do just that, crying out, “Jesus of Nazareth . . . the Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24). But Jesus has the authority of God and this triumphs over the unclean spirit. Mark portrays Jesus as the prophet promised to Moses and the people in the first reading, “I will raise up for them a prophet . . . and will put my words into his mouth” (Deuteronomy 18:18). This gives Jesus the authority to drive out unclean spirits, as well as to teach with authority in the synagogue.

The passage from Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians can be understood in the light of his belief that the Second Coming was imminent. Considering the importance of this event, Paul wanted the faithful to spend less time worrying about the day-to-day concerns of this world.

We don’t hear what Jesus taught in the synagogue, but Mark tells us that “he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes” (Mark 1:22). What would the scribes have said about a man with an unclean spirit in the synagogue? Probably that he was corrupting the place with his presence and that he should be cast out. But Jesus chooses to cast out the unclean spirit, not the person. He is not concerned, as the scribes would be, of becoming unclean himself. He teaches—and acts—with greater authority than the people had ever witnessed.                            Fr. Gerard

Blood Bank at St. James February 11th

When's the last time you saved someone's life? Here's your chance! The mobile unit of the San Diego Blood Bank will be at St. James Sunday, February 11, from 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to receive blood donations. Bringing it close to home, we have had several parishioners whose lives have been saved by blood transfusions, and over the years we’ve been doing it, your donations have saved over 9,000 lives. Remember: people are the only source -- there is no substitute. And only 3% of Americans ever donate blood. If you've never given blood before, now is the time to start. Let’s give them a big turnout! Make an appointment by:

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
