STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

St. Paul echoes Christ in many ways. In the 13th Chapter from his letter to the Romans, he continues with his thoughts on how we should live to please God, and he uses a sentence which Christ often repeated. After listing several of the 10 Commandments, Paul states, “…whatever other commandments there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’.”

There is always much that gets debated in that admonition, such as loving yourself, and who exactly is your neighbor? Paul’s point, like that of Jesus, is simply that we are called to treat others as we may like to be treated. We need to show them the respect and caring that we may hope for and wish for. God loves us, and if we realize that, we may ultimately come to the conclusion that we are loveable.

Most of us know someone whose love is evident by how they treat others and how they live. Loving neighbor is a visible expression of everything that Jesus taught. It is a way of expressing the depth of our faith and our belief that we are Disciples of Christ.

St. Francis de Sales captured all about what this love is and who is your neighbor when he wrote, “Examine your heart often to see if it is such toward your neighbor as you would like his or hers to be toward you in his or her place. This is the touchstone of true reason.” It is relatively basic and simple — our neighbor is everyone with whom we have contact and love is what makes it all work.

RELIGION DEFINED I do not know how philosophers may ultimately

define religion; but from Micah to James it has been defined as service to one’s fellow human rendered

by following the great rule of justice and mercy, of wisdom and righteousness.

—Theodore Roosevelt

“Adoration is prayer that prolongs the celebration of the Eucharistic Communion and in which the soul continues to be nourished: it is nourished with love, truth and peace; it is nourished with hope, because the One before whom we prostrate ourselves does not judge us, does not crush us, but liberates and transforms us.” - Pope Benedict XVI

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

STATEMENT FROM BISHOP MCELROY ON

DECISION TO CLOSE DACA PROGRAM

The Most Rev. Robert McElroy, Roman Catholic Bishop of San Diego, released the following statement in reaction to the announcement Today, 9/5/2017, in Washington that the Trump Administration is closing down the DACA (Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals) Program. DACA temporarily suspended deportation proceedings against undocumented immigrants who were brought to this country as minors and raised in the United States, with little or no contact with their family’s home country. An estimated 800,000 people will be affected by this decision:

“Today the hope that our national policies will retain any shred of humanity in their treatment of undocumented immigrants has been extinguished. The Trump Administration's decision to initiate the process of eradicating the rights of hundreds of thousands of young men and women to legally live and work and contribute in American society not only robs them of their security in remaining in the only

homeland that many of them have ever known; it also robs our nation of some of the finest young people who seek to build up our country for the next generation.

“Tonight across this great land, untold families will be weeping at such harshness. Our Lord, who was both refugee and immigrant during his journey on this earth, will weep with them. And the Church will stand in steadfast solidarity and action with them, no matter what is coming. The Catholic community has encountered too many waves of nativism in the history of our country not to know that such prejudice and divisiveness must be resisted at its root.”
