Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner Persistence. That is what the angel of the Lord needs when visiting Elijah in the desert. Notice that one visit was not enough. In the account from the first book of Kings, the angel brought food and water to Elijah and nudged him to get up and eat. Elijah obeys, but then lies down again. So the angel has to return, touch him again, and order him to get up, eat, and begin his journey. This does the trick, as after this second meal Elijah finally resumes his walk across the desert. Like a parent trying to get their child up for school, one attempt is not enough.

How should we treat one another? Saint Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians sums it up in two verses: Remove “all bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, . . . reviling, . . . (and) malice.” Instead, “be kind, . . . compassionate, (and) forgiving” (Ephesians 4:31-32). Eliminate the negative and choose the positive. This is not always as easy as it sounds. It helps to see the goodness, or the potential for goodness, in everyone. “Be imitators of God,” in other words (Ephesians 5:1).

The bread that the angel brought Elijah sustained him on a forty-day journey through the desert to Mt. Horeb, a place where he could encounter God. The bread that Jesus gives us, the very bread of life that Jesus is, is meant to sustain us on our journey to God. We may not be prophets like Elijah, but we all have difficult periods on our journey through life. Jesus, the Bread of Life, can sustain us during these times. Fr. Gerard

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Stewardship Reflection

“This is enough, O Lord! Take my life.” Talk about a bad day! Haven’t we all been through this at some point in our stewardship journey, whether in the parish ministry work we are trying to do, at home with our family or in our profession — we get worn out and worn down.

Elijah’s plea — melodramatic to be sure — is a form of the stewardship pillar of prayer, for prayer is simply lifting mind and heart to God. And God responds, sending restorative food and drink. Rejuvenated, Elijah is able to walk for 40 days until he arrives at the destination God had in mind for him all along!

Contrast this with the Gospel reading. The people, hearing Jesus’ message, do not understand. But rather than take their complaint toHim as Elijah did, they begin to complain amongst themselves about him — that’s murmuring, and it is counterproductive.

Feeling worn down at times is actually part of the stewardship journey. It means we are giving our all to the life God is calling us to live. But it is also a sign to us that we need to find new strength.

How? Ask the Lord! He will meet your physical needs. Even more, He will send you His own Son, the Bread from Heaven, to strengthen you with the Eucharist and the living Word of the Scriptures.

A stewardship way of life takes all the strength we have to give. The beauty of this way of life is that we have a God who delights in giving us every bit of strength we need to live it!

Thur, Aug 16, 7pm: "Existence Beyond The Grave" -

Karlo Broussard, Staff Apologist and Speaker, Catholic Answers Karlo explains why we have good reasons from both philosophy and scientific research to believe that there is life after death. He also explains why existence beyond the grave matters to all of us. Come hear Karlo explore this critically important topic.

Thur, Sept 20, 7pm: "Whatever Happened to the Modern World" - Cy Kellet, Host, Catholic Answers Live The modern era was supposed to be all about progress and reason, but it has gotten itself into serious trouble. Though we have gained many things, humanity has suffered many losses, most especially the loss of Christ. As a result, the modern world often seems unfit for real people. Knowing how this happened can help us recover a modern world fit for people.

Thur, Oct 11, 7pm: "Christopher Columbus" -Christopher Check, President, Catholic Answers It has become fashionable in recent years to cast Christopher Columbus as a cruel conqueror rather than a great explorer. In 1992, much of the world celebrated the 500th anniversary of his voyage of discovery, yet the citizens of Berkeley, California, staged an opera called “Get Lost (Again) Columbus.” What is the truth about this controversial historical figure? Come listen to the compelling tale of this man of extraordinary daring who brought Christendom to the New World.

Pregunta del Día

Persistencia.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

Mission Statement: To love God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve all God's people.
