Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ August 7, 2016

We are excited to announce the hiring of Pablo Maldonado who will serve the St. James‐St. Leo Catholic Community as the  Director of Catechetical Ministries.  In this role, Pablo will oversee children & adult faith formation, Sacramental preparation, youth ministry and liturgical ministries.  

Pablo is bi‐lingual in Spanish, has a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of San Diego, and is  currently completing his Master’s degree in Theological Studies at the Franciscan School of Theology.  He has over 20 years of  volunteer and professional ministerial  experience ranging from his time in Priestly Formation to his most recent position as  Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation and Youth Ministry at the Immaculata Parish in San Diego.  

He and his wife, Bernadette, recently  celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary.  Their son and daughter‐in‐law, Trevor and Stefanie, newly gifted them with their first grandchild, Bradley John.  They also share a home with two dogs, Rose and Jack.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION At the close of today’s Gospel Reading from St. Luke, Jesus makes a statement that will echo forever to those who seek to practice stewardship: “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Jesus is speaking of His expectations of us and His faith in us.  

We often speak about how  important faith in the Lord is, but we also need to understand that He has a strong element of faith and trust in us as well. It may not seem fair that  expectations are connected to the gifts we have  received, but that is in fact reality. A popular  stewardship saying is “not equal giving but equal  sacrifice.”  

That goes hand in hand with what the Lord is trying to teach us in the Parable of the Faithful Servant in  today’s Gospel. First, of course, we must recognize our gifts and that we are gifted. Then God’s expectations of us are tied to how we use our gifts. If we receive more, we need to share more and give more of our time, our talent, and our treasure.  

Also in the Gospel of Luke in an earlier chapter we learn from the Lord what the rewards are for using God’s plentiful gifts as good stewards. Jesus says in Luke 6:38 “Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and  overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

REFLECIÓN DOMINICAL Al cierre de Lectura del Evangelio de hoy de San Lucas, Jesús hace una declaración que hará eco para siempre a los que buscan  practicar la  mayordomía: "Mucho se  requerirá de la  persona confiado mucho, y todavía se demandará más de la persona  encargada con más. "Jesús está hablando de sus  expectativas de nosotros, y su fe en nosotros.  

A menudo hablamos sobre la importancia de la fe en el Señor es, pero también tenemos que entender que Él tiene un fuerte elemento de fe y confianza en nosotros también. Puede que no parece justo que las expectativas están conectados a los dones que hemos recibido, pero que en realidad es la realidad. Un dicho popular es la  administración "no es igual dar pero iguales sacrificio."  

Eso va de la mano con lo que el Señor está tratando de enseñarnos en la parábola del siervo fiel en el Evangelio de hoy.En primer lugar, por supuesto, hay que reconocer nuestros dones y que estamos dotados. A continuación, las expectativas de Dios de nosotros están atados a la forma en que usamos nuestros dones. Si recibimos más, tenemos que compartir más y darle más de nuestro  tiempo, nuestro talento y nuestro tesoro.  

También en el Evangelio de Lucas en un capítulo anterior que aprendemos del Señor lo que las recompensas son para el uso de abundantes dones de Dios como buenos administradores.Jesús dice en Lucas 6:38 "Den y se les dará a usted; una buena medida, envasados juntos,  sacudida hacia abajo, y desbordante, se echará en el re‐gazo. Para la medida con la que se mide, a su regreso se medirá a ustedes. "

Faith Formation for Children PreK through 8th Grade 

 

Registration Open for 2016‐17 Join us for a joyful and fun‐filled year of learning about our faith, both in the classroom and at our wonderful seasonal events! Registration is open for Sunday  religious education classes starting in the fall for PreK through 8th grade. Registration packets are at the church entrance, or contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org.  

First Communion for ALL GRADES Preparation for sacraments is part of our 2nd grade Faith Formation classes, but our program warmly  welcomes older children seeking sacraments (even baptism) through 8th grade.  Contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org.  

Share your Time and Talent! Teaching children about the faith is a rewarding and uplifting experience.  We have volunteer openings in our Faith Formation program at the primary level.  Co‐teaching with a friend or spouse is also an option. Training and curriculum are provided, as well as teen aides in the classroom, and support from a dynamic catechetical team.  Teens, we need you too!  We have an awesome Teen Aide Team—great for college apps! Contact Pamela Smith at ffc@stjames‐stleo.org. 

Prayer Ministry What’s Prayer Ministry ? At a healing Mass, you will hear and see manifestation of the Holy Spirit through the gift of tongues,  prophecy, Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom, raising our hands in praise . . .  just like the apostles, disciples and Christians in early church times  experienced after Pentecost. These are gifts or  charisms which oftentimes lay dormant within us.  You can read about this in the Acts of the Apostles in  Scripture.  At the end of our quarterly healing Mass, you will have the opportunity to receive prayer from the priest and in “prayer circles” where we intercede for each other as brothers and sisters in the family of Christ.  Everyone is welcome to come and be prayed over.  We never know how God is going to touch us and heal us. “Come and see…” That is the invitation

Attention Bridge Players!!  

The Saint James Bridge Club meets on the first Friday of the month at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. We play 24 hands of bridge and typically have between 36 and 40 players. Lunch is always a treat and who knows, you might be lucky enough to place in the  Winner’s Circle! We welcome both women and men to join us for a friendly game of party bridge.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary.  We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643.  The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world.  Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

Our First Christian Steward:      The Blessed Virgin Mary On August 15 we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption; the day we recall Our Blessed Mother being assumed into heaven and crowned queen. In the Gospel reading on this day we hear proclaimed once again the Canticle of Mary, recorded in the Gospel of Luke (1:46‐55). It is the  Virgin Mary’s song of joy in response to her cousin Elizabeth’s greeting (Luke 1:41‐45), and summarizes Mary’s deep faith and trust in God.      This joyous song is also known as the Magnificat, from the opening line of scripture’s Latin translation which means “My soul magnifies the Lord” (“Magnificat anima mea Dominum”). The Magnificat is a beautiful stewardship prayer used by the Church every day since the fifth century. It is a hymn at Evening Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours.      Among the many stewardship themes in this reading, the prayer helps us realize that God’s stewardship plan turns the world’s values upside down. God comes to the aid of the poor and lowly, to the detriment of the rich and powerful. And for those who entrust their lives to the Lord, they are filled with good things. As a young woman, humble and poor, Mary becomes an interpreter of God’s plan of salvation, she reveals to us the fundamentals of good stewardship, and she becomes a prophetic witness to social justice for all future generations who “will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). Mary was the first disciple, the first Christian steward of God’s plan.      Take a few moments and pray this stewardship prayer. Consider its implications for your life. How do you  magnify the Lord? How do you make God “bigger” in your day‐to‐day world? How do you bring God’s compassion to the poor?
