STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“The community of believers was of one heart and one mind.” For those who practice stewardship as a way of life every passage from Holy Scripture contains a stew‐ardship message. Howev‐er, today’s readings are particularly special in that regard. The first reading from the Acts of the Apos‐tles speaks to the sense of unity and teamwork of the early Church. Our own parishes may reflect this idea that we are one, and that we have a common purpose.
One of the great miscon‐ceptions of this particular scriptural passage is that it reflects what we might term a “sense of Com‐munism.” However, as we as Catholics and stewards reflect upon this, we must understand a basic differ‐ence. Communism says “What you think is yours is really mine.” Our faith, our community, and our good stewards say, “What may seem to be mine is really yours.”
“No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own.” This is the stewardship understanding that, first and fore‐most, everything comes from, is gifted by, and is possessed by God, not by us. In addition, stewards understand that all their gifts are to be shared with others. The key to this entire passage is, nonetheless, that the early Christians regarded people as more important than things. As difficult as this may be for us, that is to what we are called, as well.

What does it mean to do ministry in a Catholic parish?
This is an invitation to everyone who is involved in any kind of ministry here at St. James. That means lectors, altar serv‐ers, choir, communion ministers, ushers, catechists, Mission Circle, and on and on. We have so many people joyfully serv‐ing in ministry here. But is the person who is involved in so‐cial action and the person who is serving at the altar being gathered and sent from the same font? Please join us in the Ministry Center on Saturday morning May 2nd to learn more about this question. We will have Tom Ulrich from the Igna‐tian Volunteer Corp come and explore this question with us. All people involve in ministry here at St. James are welcome.

OF ONE HEART AND MIND Reading about the faith of the early Christian believers can be a real inspiration to those of us who have been Christians for a long time, as well as for those who are newly baptized. Can you imagine people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as was the first community of believers? Today’s First Letter of John seems to hold the key to how this can be accomplished. Keeping God’s commandments and loving all of God’s children seems to be the start of being “of one heart and mind.” We live in a world that stresses differ‐ences—differences among religions, among races, between genders, and among economic classes. Today we are sum‐moned to focus on what we all share in common on this fragile planet of ours.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistes.org/english.htm
Annual Catholic Appeal “Called to be Merciful”
Thank you to the 128 households who have donated $55,600 toward our goal of $93,000. We still need an additional $37,400 to reach our goal. You can make your contribution online at www.diocese‐sdiego.org or by mailing in or dropping off your response card to the parish office.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When we imagine the disciples cowering behind locked doors on the first Easter, it is a matter of the greatest urgen‐cy that the doors get opened. They are not locked in as if in prison; rather, they have chosen to marinate in fear. Both the lock and the key stand on their side of the door, in their con‐trol. Christ breaks through this significant barrier with a mes‐sage of “Peace.” The risen Lord’s word propels them through the door and along the path leading to the consol‐ing image of the community living in harmony in the first reading today. What do we pray for in our tradition? More than anything else, we pray for peace. Every Mass is an ear‐nest prayer for peace with God, with self, with neighbor, and for peace in the world. Yet, curiously, the peace Christ offers is deeper than the mere absence of conflict. Our tradition treasures the memories of saints who were remarkably open to Christ’s gift of peace even in the maelstroms of history. St. Edith Stein and St. Maximillian Kolbe, martyrs of the Holo‐caust, are but two examples. At the eye of a fearful storm, they stand as witnesses to the power of Christ’s rising in our lives.
