NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH: RESIDENTS DIVIDED OVER NEW ORGANISATION

Crime fighting tensionANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

An issue described as “extremely sensitive”by sources is resulting in tensions runninghigh in the greater Table View area.

The local Community Police Forum (CPF)and Table View Neighbourhood Watch(TVNW) are squaring off against a breaka-way faction calling themselves ParklandsNeighbourhood Watch (PNW).

Table View police are, at the time of goingtopress, keeping their distance andnot com-menting on what appears to be a growingconcern.

As a result, the question about whetherPNW is legal remains unanswered.

Parklands residents are unsure whetherto support PNW or stick with the tried, trus-ted and efficient TVNW.

The fuss started when TVNW member andParklands resident, Bjorn Harrison Sagar, decided Parklands, Sunningdale and thenew Rivergate suburbs were being margina-lised by the existing neighbourhood watch.

These areas fall under Table View policeand TVNW sector 2.

Sagar established a breakawayneighbourhood watch, allegedly without thenecessary permission from the police or the

CPF.According to him just under 50% of the ac-

tive Parklands members of TVNW followedhimtoPNW.Thatmeans therehave recentlybeen two neighbourhood watches patrollingthe streets of sector 2 – one not recognisedby the other.

Rumours about PNW members’ “heavy-handedness” and them “doing the police’sjob” have been doing the rounds, but Sagarsays these are completely false.

“Bring these guilty parties forward. Thereare none! We are strongly opposed to thisway of doing things,” he insists.

“When opening this watch we have acted

within our constitutional rights. We are notdoing anything illegal.”

According to him he has had numeroushigh levelmeetingswithvarious authoritiesin the recent past and is confident PNW willbe allowed to operate.

Sagar reckons people should see the “big-ger picture”.

“We are all here for crime prevention. Wewant to help the community and we shouldall work together. Claremont has fourneighbourhood watches. Bothasig has one.Edgemead has one. Why can’t Parklands al-so have one?”

CPF chairperson, Andrew Brace, insiststhat PNW is not recognised by the CPF orthe police.

Brace adds: “In Mitchell’s Plain there we-re eight neighbourhood watches, but mostwere closed down by provincial commissio-ner Arno Lamoer because of a lack of coordi-nation. The more watches there are the har-der it becomes to coordinate matters. TheCPF is made up of many forums and we haveto make it work. We and the TVNW formpart of one of the biggest success stories inthe province. Quite frankly, Sagar doesn’twant to work in these structures.”

TVNW’s Ryno Roberts also reckons PNWis illegal.

“Why interfere with something thatworks? Yes, according to us they are illegal, but that isn’t our decision. We would preferto stay out of it. This creates confusion inthe neighbourhoods,” he says.

Table View station commander Dirk Vos-loo has indicated he will release a statementon Thursday or Friday, clarifying the mat-

ter.One of the reasons mooted for the oppositi-

on towards PNW is that the police wouldn’twant to sit in even more meetings.

Sagar responds by saying everyone shouldmeet during the CPF meetings, so therewould be no need to have extra meetings.

“Why is there a satellite police station inParklands?” asks Sagar before answering:“Parklands needs focussed micro-manage-ment. People call us vigilantes and say we’reillegal, but they should sit down, take a bre-ath, and really think about it.”

Brace responds by saying that there is in-deed a neighbourhood watch operating inParklands – TVNW sector 2.

“There are three sectors in the greater Ta-ble View area and each has its own watch.TVNW sector 1, TVNW sector 2 and TVNWsector 3.”

Spokesperson for the local CPF, GemmaRedelingshuys, weighs in: “According toSouth African Police Service Act, Act 68 of1995, the police shall, in order to achieve the

objects contemplated in Section 215 of theConstitution, liaise with the communitythrough the CPF. No structure is able to existin Table View without being registeredthrough the local CPF and the local police.“Ultimately the CPF is responsible for thewhole community. At this point in time, the-re is no act in place allowing the Departmentof Community Safety to grant a neighbour-hood watch structure legal grounds to existwithin a community. In a community withan already well-established neighbourhoodwatch with strong ties to the community, lo-cal authorities and armed response, a se-cond neighbourhood watch is nonsensical.”

During multiple interviews with involvedparties (not all of them quoted above), a lotwas said off the record. The residents whoare unwittingly caught in the confusion, need this issue to be resolved as soon as pos-sible.

People wishing to still make use of Es-kom’s rebate on solar water heatersto save on their electricity bill may

be disappointed. The energy supply giant says it has pla-

ced its Load Reduction Rebate Program-me under review, meaning rebates worththousands of rands available to solar-sav-vy households will be severely curbed.

A leading solar products company hassince drawn up a petition objecting to therebate cut.

“In a surprise move, Eskom has termi-nated the current solar rebate program-me, effective from 1 May, with minimalnotice to the public, industry and otherstakeholders,” said Klint Munton, ownerof SunScan Solar Energy Technologies.

“Electricity demand still exceeds sup-ply during peak periods, and now Eskomare pulling the plug on their endeavor tosave power by their subsidising energy-aware consumers who install power-sa-ving water heaters and geysers,” saidMunton.

Imported technology“With an electricity grid under severe

strain, how is it possible that a program-me such as the Load Reduction RebateProgramme can be discontinued?”

But the City of Cape Town, a major Es-kom customer, said the rebate cuts onlyapplied to high-pressure solar geysers, and then only if the components used inthe making of these geysers were mostlyimported.

“There are new requirements aroundrebates and high-pressue systems, beingthat rebates will only apply where pro-

duction includes 70% locally producedcomponents,” said Sarah Ward, head ofthe city’s energy department.

This is in line with Eskom’s response. The energy giant said the rebates werenot cut completely, but have a different fo-cus.

The programme is under review in or-der to enhance certain aspects, such ascreating more opportunities to stimulatelocal manufacture, and the level of reba-te,” said Latetia Venter, Eskom’s marke-ting and communications manager.

“The programme will continue, butwith changes which are currently underconsideration,” said Venter.

She said selected areas with low-costhousing consumers will continue to recei-ve low pressure (LP) solar water heatingsystems free of charge.

There are two popular kinds of solar-po-wered geysers: one that works with solartubes, the other with solar flat-plates.

A typical 200L solar tube system for afamily of four costs R29 697. The Eskomrebate on this system is R5 865, bringingthe capital cost down to R23 832. Muntonsaid with financing, this amount was re-payable over up to five years with amonthly instalment of R998.

But Munton said the tubes are only ma-nufactured overseas, South Africa do nothave a manufacturing facility for this pro-duct.

Thus homeowners wishing to make useof an Eskom rebate would be limited toflat-plate technology.

“This becomes problematic when thehome owner has a roof orientation whichis more than 45° off north. Flat-plates donot perform well on such a roof,” he said.

There are also concerns the rebate poli-cy change would threaten local renewable

energy businesses. One such business is that of David Lip-

schitz. His company advocates net-mete-ring – an alternative energy solutionwherby households generate their ownelectricity and sell any excess back intothe grid.

Policy changesLipschitz said the rebates were just one

way in which Eskom and the state’s ap-proach to renewable energy was puttingsmall manufacturers out of business.

“Apparently Eskom has given their so-lar water heater manufacturers/instal-lers six weeks’ notice that this Load Re-duction Rebate Programme is being ter-minated,” said Lipschitz.

He said this was “typical” of govern-ment, for while many businesses and lo-cal manufacturing concerns have beencreated, when the rules were changed“willy-nilly” then these businesses cutjobs or shut down, with internationalcompanies moving in to take their place.

He said if government would spend mo-ney on alternative energy sources to crea-te their own electricity, it would free upenough energy for industry.

“Instead of fixing their contracts, Es-kom take out their problems on the poorand the poor investors who have investedin ‘proudly South African’ only to havethe rug pulled out from under them.”

In the meantime, Munton’s petitionagainst the rebate cut remains.V View SunScan’s petition at https://secu-re.avaaz.org/en/petition/Phindile_Bale-ni_CEO_of_NERSA_Petition_Es-kom_to_keep_the_Solar_Rebate_for_ALL_pro-ducts/?wMnMphbV Visit Lipschitz’s blog at http://mypowerstation-sa.blogspot.com/

A quadriplegic 35-year-old man paintsa line on a blank canvas, controllingthe brush with his mouth.

He is going to paint the Grand Canyon. While expressing himself expertly hismind flashes back to 1 January 2005, whenhe was sitting on a rock in Paternoster. He paints another line while he sees him-self standing up on the rock and diving intothe dark blue water below.Heiron Joseph from Eric Miles CheshireHome blinks quickly to get the recurringimage out of his head. There was an unseen sandbank beneaththe water andwhen he dove into it he brokethe c4 and c5 vertebrae in his neck.“The moment I plunged into the water Ijust experienced a numbness, whichwas al-most like getting cramps, because thewateris really cold along the West Coast,” he re-members.Someone rescued him that fateful day,but he was already in a coma. When a dazed Heironwoke up in hospitalhe was told he would be paralysed from theneck down for the rest of his life.He recalls that moment the doctor sharedthe tragic news all too well.“But I can’t even begin to explain how Ifelt,” he tells TygerBurger.“I simply couldn’t comprehend neverwalking again. I wanted the ventilator tostop right there and then.”In hindsight, Heiron believes the acci-dent was a blessing.“If I take stock of the last eight years ofmy life compared to the 27 years duringwhich I was able bodied, I realize that myaccident was a blessing in disguise. I haveachieved more, given back more and beco-me more appreciative of life. I was a diffe-rent person then... Now I know I’m here fora purpose. My journey, which is to spread

the message that there is life beyond trage-dy, has just begun,” says Heiron determi-nedly.His journey is bursting with oil coloursdepicting landscapes, and his story is deli-vered to distant parts of the world such asGermany, Portugal and the United King-dom.Heiron has sold many paintings since hetook on art as a hobby, and he has sold topeople all over the world. It comesasno surprise that thisman fromMilnerton is inspiring others while he jour-neys through life.“It took me quite a while to master thebrush while holding it in my mouth. Cont-rol is obviously a difficult thing to achieve, but serious concentration does the trick.”Painting the Grand Canyon has takenhim the better part of a month, spendingthree to four days a week painting. Heknows he should take a break when he

starts feeling pins and needles in his armsand legs, caused by the strain on his neckvertebrae. But the shape of the Grand Canyon is be-ginning to take formon the canvas - thiswillbe his greatest painting to date.Every day Heiron seizes is gift. That day in Paternoster could have beenhis last were it not for someone who sawhim dive in and never come up.If he let his misery get the better of himhe would never even have left the hospital.Instead, he is a shining light of encourage-ment.Heiron’s dream is to paint the seven won-ders of the world on one canvas, somethinghe says would be a message of hope.Heiron has just recently sold his fourthpainting and has another client from Aus-tralia lined up.V Go to his facebook page to appreciate some ofhis work.

Donna Fata, manager for policy, govern-ment and public affairs at Chevron Refinery, says investing in education and literacy isvital.

“According to the Department of Basic

Much work needsto be done to improve this situation giventhe widely accepted view that illiteracy thre-atens one’s ability to become economicallyactive. Despite a few “teething problems”, theMyCiTi service is on track with near-ly a million passenger journeys per

month.Brett Herron, city mayoral committee

member for transport, says: “Overall972 343 passenger journeys were recordedon the MyCiTi bus service in March. Thisfigure includes the passenger journeys onthe new routes to Hout Bay and Dunoon.”Herron said April’s figures will only beavailable in mid-May because the numberof passenger journeys recorded at theMyCi-Ti stations first have to be verified. This increase bodes well for the future of

the service, but behind the scenes variousobstacles still need to be overcome. In March the City cancelled the R234 mil-

lion contract with Lumen Technologies, whowere responsible for the control centre. The contract included the scheduling and

monitoring of the MyCiTi bus operations, such as automatic monitoring of buses byGPS to record their adherence to scheduledtimes.

NonperformanceDeputy mayor Ian Neilson said at the ti-

me that the seven-year contract had beencancelled due to “non-performance”.It was recently stated by subcontractor

Shaun Patterson from Questek, that thecontract wasn’t terminated for failing to de-liver technically, but financially. The reasons for termination is not stan-

ding in the way of Lumen threatening theCity with legal action that could potentiallycost the city R50 million in compensation.Questek also claims that Lumen owes

them R10 million for work done on the My-CiTi contract.Patterson cast some light on the cancella-

tion of the contract when he said that Lu-men were unable to renew the R5 millionperformance bond required by the citywhen the project ran late, andwas thereforein breach of contract.Herron explains how the cancellation is

affecting the MyCiTi service when he says:“Certain functionality, such as real-timepassenger information displays on the pas-senger information boards at the stationsand on themobi-site have been affected. Ho-wever, despite the impact of the cancellati-

on, the city has still managed to roll out theMyCiTi service to Dunoon and Atlantis. Itis hoped that a contractor will be in placeby June.”On the teething problems experienced by

the service to date, Herron said somemediaplatforms have chosen to highlight the opi-nions of a small percentage of unhappy com-muters.

Worldwide reality“The fact that Capetonians must get used

to the worldwide realities of a public trans-port system, like having to stand for part ofor the entire trip, or having to wait for theirturn to embark, have been mentioned. When viewed in context against passengernumbers, complaints represent less than1% of the total passenger journeys recor-ded,” he said.Considering that therewere almost amil-

lionpassenger journeys inMarchandabout700 000 journeys in February, “a less than1%” complaint rate equals less than 17 000complaints in two months.Herron maintained: “The phenomenal

uptake of the MyCiTi service over the pastfew months confirms residents’ need for asafe, reliable and affordable public trans-port system.”To illustrate this, Herron said that the ci-

ty launched the MyCiTi route linking Imi-zamo Yethu, Hangberg and Hout Bay withthe city centre on 16 February.By the end of February, total passenger

utilisation for Route 108 (Hout Bay, Hang-berg, Sea Point, Civic Centre) was 2 065.This number increased to 62 210 for themonth of March.Similarly, on Route 109 (Hout Bay, Imiza-

mo Yethu, Sea Point, Civic Centre) the totalpassenger utilisation was 1 909 by the endof February. This number increased to67 705 in March.Herron continued: “On 1 March the City

extended the main route (T01) to Dunoon. The passenger journeys recorded forMarchamounted to 85 212. The number of buses onthis route have also been increased from 24to 38 during peak hours, and the number ofbuses during the inter-peak hours was alsoincreased from four buses (one every 20 mi-nutes), to 10 buses arriving at 15-minute in-tervals.”On 5 July, the MyCiTi service will be

launched in Mitchells Plain and Khayelits-ha.

Disabled residents at the Orion Organisati-on are busy transforming Atlantis into oneof the West Coast’s bread baskets thanks toimaginative use of vegetable tunnels.

The organisation’s tomato cultivation hasdeveloped so rapidly that a certain percenta-ge of the tomatoes are being sold profitablyto Atlantis residents and vegetable mer-chants.

The need to become more financially in-dependent is one of the primary reasonsOrion’s disabled residents are cultivatingtomatoes, and they intend growing othervegetables such as spinach.

The organisation is a therapeutic empo-werment centre for children and adults li-ving with disabilities. Part of the tomatoharvest is used for Orion’s 120 residents.

The balance, comprising hundreds of kilo-grams are sold monthly to Atlantis residentsand veggetable hawkers as part of the organi-sation’s dynamic income generation pro-gramme.

Says Hannl Cronje, Orion’s CEO: “Alt-hough some of our tomato harvests have notalways been successful, we have learnt moreabout agricultural methods as we go along,

which will help us to maximise future toma-to and other vegetable harvests. The creati-on of recurring income from our tomatoesand other crops will definitely enable us tobecome more self-sufficient.”

Orion’s vegetable tunnels could soon pro-vide additional employment opportunitiesfor the disabled in Atlantis, as well as peoplefrom other parts of the region.

Most people would have given up a long ti-me ago, but as writer GK Chesterton oncesaid: “You cannot love a thing withoutwanting to fight for it.”Deborah Boyes loves helping people and

she will defiantly shake her fist at the tem-pest enveloping her.Her non-profit organisation (NPO), Boy-

es Helping Hands, is on the brink of closu-re.“We are so close to shutting our doors

and I don’t want to see this happen. My he-art is breaking,” says Deborah. She had to fight an ardous battlewith the

South African Revenue Service to get per-mission to run a charity shop, and was fi-nally victorious when the it opened in a lo-cal centre last year.Unfortunately the shop, which was the

primary source of funding for the NPO,had to close down a month ago.Now the NPO has had to stop feeding

about 200 destitute people and 13 needy fa-milies a month because they have no inco-me.“It has been devastating to us, and if we

cannot find a premises to operate from ve-ry soon, we will need to close our doors,”she continues. It is ironic that the very despondencyDe-

borah is feeling now was one of her maindriving factors for starting the organisati-on.In November 2012 TygerBurger reported

in the article entitled “Giving back joy af-ter hard life” that Deborah’s own “experi-ence of hopelessness has driven her to dowhatever she can to help the plight of thosewhose futures look equally bleak as hersonce did.”The article reads: “Her birth to a teenage

mother who didn’t want her was followedby a loveless childhood, an abusive relati-onship, losing custody of her daughter andeventually being on the street. A chance vi-sit to a church led to someone taking herin. The compassion she experienced hereis something she now wishes to extend toothers.”Now Deborah has to plead for another

act of compassion. And standing behind her are 200 home-

less people, 13 families and pupils at theParkview Primary school in Atlantis, whohave directly benefitted from the NPO.The pupils of this school have been hel-

ped with the provision of food, school clo-thing, sporting equipment and the provisi-on of a high school education. She concludes: “I dedicated my entire

self to building up the NPO so that it couldbe a hope and a help for those in need, be-cause I have been there myself, I knowwhat it is like to be out on the streets, tohave nowhere to go, and to have nothingto eat. I now have to look into the faces ofthe peoplewe helped and say: ‘I am sorry.’”V If anybody can give any assistance to Deborahthey can contact her on 076 655 5918.

Anonymous, if you are a proudbusiness owner, why did younot add your company name(“Small business feels thepinch”, TygerBurger, 23 April)? As someone who supports

small businesses and a formerowner, I know it does not comewithout hard work, ethics andvalues. It is, however, sad that there

are so many small businessowners who over-promise andunder-deliver. Always veryeager to accept the work, expectpayment and never to be seenagain. The only thing customers

expect is to pay for the prom-ised service – nothing more, nothing less – before partingwith hard-earned money.

It is unfortunate that thereare business owners like you orthe one you referred to condon-ing poor work and bad practise. You say you “jump to the

Te veel mense kla byvoorbeeld by

So, doen vandag jou plig, én hou hulle

“Lirieke is vir mybaie belangrik in my musiek,” sê hy. Syliedjies begin as gedigte voor hy hulletoonset.

WeetStil is by Coffee Stained Vinyl Stu-

is Pieter ’n vryskut-musiekregisseur.

kaar gehaalword, gaanhoofsaaklik oorgenadedood.

Een aand het dit my heeltemal oor-val. Ekwas so ontsteld, want ekmoes alleskon groet en danweer op ’n punt vanvredekom.“’n Mens kan jou amper nie daarin in-

dink nie om ’n keuse vir genadedoodte maak. Mense hoop maar altyd op’n wonderwerk, vir ’n uitkomkans,”mymer sy.Vir Ewig en Altyd het staande ova-

sies by die KKNK, waar dit geopenhet, gekry.“Dis altyd fantasties as mense op-

staan.Byhierdie stukhet baiemenseook agterna lank bly sit. Hulle wasdiep geraak. Genadedood is ’n onder-werpwat in almal se onderbewussynbroei. Ons wonder of ons dit behoortte doen, of dit wettig moet wees.”

in Rusland.

Bespreek byComputicket.

A hit-and-run accident, ablood clot, pneumonia andfractured vertrebrae havebeen just some of the severechallenges Brian Mulder hashad to face over the last year.

Brian, a music star withhits in the ’70s and ’80s, is par-tially paralysed and his medi-cal resources depleted. Forthis reason fellow musos andentertainers have decided toraise funds to literally helpBrian up.

The United we Stand fun-draising concert is being orga-nised on behalf of Brian, afoundingmember and lead vo-calist of the group The PeanutButter Conspiracy. The entertainers voluntee-

ring their talent includes Bar-ry Hilton, Dennis East, TheBats, PJ Powers, Robin Boltman and TheSquare Set.Vernon Hattingh from Welgemoed, one of

the organisers, said the Peanut Butter Con-spiracywas amuch respected band from the1970s. Someof theirhits include “Understan-ding” and “Amen”.

“In April last year, Brian was involved inahit-and-runaccident and sustained seriousinjuries. After several months he was on themend but was then struck down by a bloodclot, whichwas presumably as a result of theaccident,” Vernon said.

“A bout of pneumoniawhich followedwasso severe that Brian fractured two vertebraein his spine, resulting in partial paralysis.

“He has been in hospital since August2013, mostly in intensive care, and then un-dergoing physiotherapy for approximatelyeight hours per day.”

He said Brian’s medical costs have spira-

led he is now reliant hisdaughter and son-in-law forsupport.

“Brian is determined towalk again and requires ex-tensive physiotherapy andtreatment to reach his goal.”

Vernon said Brian, who inthe 1980s became “one thebest cabaret performers andMasters of Ceremony forevents throughout South Af-rica”, was an icon in the en-tertainment industry.

“A group of concerned fel-low musicians from his erahave decided to assist withraising much-needed funds, with great respect for Brian’stalents and his current dire fi-nancial situation.”

The big eventwill be held atGrandWest’s Market Hall on

Tuesday 27 May.Vernon said they hoped to fill the hall’s

700 seats with people enjoying a mixture ofcomedy and music.

Drummer Dave Evans, who played withnumerous groups includingThePeanutBut-ter Conspiracy, said it was a privilege to beable to help Brian.

“It’s a great privilege and honour to beable to help an old buddy with whom I haveshared so many happy memories,” Davesaid.

Tickets are R150 per person and includea lucky number for a draw to win variousgreat prizes. Seating is unreserved.

Vernon said those who could not join inthe evening’s entertainment could assist bydonating funds into a bank account especial-ly opened for Brian.V For tickets, call Vernon or Sandie Hattingh at021 913 1398 or email [email protected].

Help to give kids mealsANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

“We live in a country where there is moregood than bad, so let’s give a little back.”

So says the self-proclaimed optimist fromMelkbosstrand, Joe-Anne Kerr (42).

She practises what she preaches, helpingto feed 46 children between the ages of threeand seven-years-old fromMonday to Friday.

The children who go to ACVV Koeberg’spre-school now eat rice, pasta and soup fromMonday to Thursday and on Friday they gettreated with a full meal, yoghurt, fruit andjuice.

Kerr has managed to get Argon SupplyChains Solutions on board, who have gladlycommitted to being a sponsor for the Fridaymeals.

Unfortunately, getting sponsors for theMonday to Thursday meals is proving moredifficult.

Says Kerr: “We depend on the Melkbos-strand community, but donations are veryslim. We need about R625 per day to feed the

children and we get nowhere near that.”The result is that Kerr covers the shortfall

from her own pocket. She has now reached out to the communi-

ty via TygerBurger and hopes somethinggood will come from it.

“As long as I just keep doing good,” shesays.

Kerr first saw an ACVV advertisement inJanuary asking for donations, and immedia-tely knew she could help.

The idea that the children would eat rice, pasta and soup every day was unacceptableto her so she started the “Friday meal” idea.

. Meanwhile, the children of ACVV, withthe help of Kerr andDriftwoodCafé, enjoyeda fabulousEaster recentlywhen theyhuntedfor eggs and frolicked on jumping castlesand waterslides.

The waterslide was sponsored by Drif-twood Café’s owner, Philip “Kids wanna ha-ve fun!” Smith.

The community are doing their bit to helpchildren in need – are you?

Tygerbergklub maak stem dik in WP se Superliga-rugbySAREL BURGER

ATHLETICS: JAVELIN THROWER HAS POTENTIAL TO BRING THE MEDALS HOME

Local lad eyes Olympics

Rocco van Rooyen is set for the international stage. PHOTO: STEHAN SCHOEMAN

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Rocco vanRooyen (21) is on the right pathto becoming one of the greatest javelinthrowers this country has ever produ-

ced. This lad fromKuils River, who is amember

at the Tygerberg Athletics Club, has his eyesfirmly set on the world stage. At the end of last month while competing

in theWestern Province Top 10 club competi-tion at the Bellville Velodrome, he recordedhis personal best throw of 80.10m.Keeping in mind that most javelin thro-

wers reach their peak at 28, Rocco, at the ageof 21, has so much scope and time to achievegreatness that the sky is the limit for this ta-lented youngster. For now, competing in the 19thAfrica Seni-

or Championships in Morocco from 10 to 14August is top priority. There is also a chancehe may compete in the Commonwealth Ga-mes which is to be held in Glasgow, Scotlandfrom 23 July to 3 August.

Morocco for Rocco“I am really looking forward to competing

in Morocco. If I can do well there, I have achance of being selected to compete in the In-tercontinental Cup amonth later, which is al-so in Morocco.“If I can accomplish that, it will be a huge

honour to represent Africa against the othercontinents,” said Rocco confidently. If all goes according to plan, Roccowill first

compete inGermanyor Japan in July againststrong opposition which will serve as a per-

fect platform for the Morocco showdown.“I ambasically awaiting confirmation for

eitherGermanyor Japan.Eitherway itwillbe great to compete just before Morocco.”When it comes to coaching, Rocco is wor-

kingwith one of themost respected coachesin the world, Kari Ihalainen, who was thehead coach of javelin in Finland a few yearsago. “ImetKari a fewyears ago.He realisedmy talent and invited me over for twomonths last year for intensive training. So-metimes I can be all over the showwith mythrows, but Kari and I are working on mytechnique and back here I am working onmy own with a lot of drills. Things are co-ming together nicely now,” he said.

Niggling injuries“As with any sport I struggle with one or

two niggling injuries but it’s nothing seri-ous. I do a lot of gymwork, especially in theoff-season, and when I prepare for competi-tion my preparation involves a lot of run-ning, work on the medicine ball and lightgym work.”His goals for the future are set - to travel

and compete in asmany countries as possi-ble.“Competing in the Olympic Games will

be the ultimate, and I believe I can reachthe 90m plus mark. It will be great to sayit is my job to be a professional athlete.“God gave me this talent, and it’s my res-

ponsibility to develop myself to be the bestof my abilities.”V To assist Rocco financially to achieve his goalscontact him on 072 536 1342.
