he City deeply regrets any incon-

    venience caused by construction

work, andat all timesweaim to fin-

ish constructionprojects as quickly as possi-

    ble.

    Motorists who use the construction-heavy

Koeberg and Blaauwberg roads are fed-up

    with apologies.

This time Brett Herron, theMayoral Com-

mittee member for Transport, Roads and

    Stormwater uttered these oft-spoken words.

Rush hour traffic along these routes is, in

    fact, reaching epic proportions.

One of the commuters whose patience is

    wearing particularly thin, Alan Martheze,

posed some questions, which according to

him are being asked by every poor sod that

sits for hours in gridlocked traffic.

    Construction

The first question is about the road that

    links Parklands with Killarney Gardens,

which has been half-completed for years.

Martheze reckons this road would have

made life much easier for commuters if it

    routes started.

Who then authorised the roads to be

hacked and churned up outside Killarney

Gardensbefore either of these twowere com-

    pleted? he continues.

Martheze is deeply aggravated that Koe-

berg Road from Montague Gardens to Blou-

berg has effectively been turned into a con-

    gested single lane.

Herron responds: The link road between

Parklands and Killarney Gardens is a South

    African National Roads Agency (Sanral)

project. The City and Sanral fall under sepa-

rate spheres of government. One is national

    government and the other local.

He adds that the City could not wait for

this road to be completed because Blaauw-

berg Road is scheduled as part of the work

required to roll out the MyCiTi service

    across the whole metro.

    Schedule

Herron elaborates: It needs to be complet-

ed by certain dates and thus far the contrac-

tor has kept to the schedule. There is a need

to improve the road infrastructure in the ar-

ea to create road width to allow for red bus

    ture for motorists.

Over theweekendwork is done on a 24-hour-

    basis.

As with all road construction the situa-

tion gets worse before it gets better, says

    Herron.

It is doubtful whether these answers and

calls for patience are enough to appease the

    tempers of frustrated road users.

Someone like Martheze, who has to sit in

bumper to bumper traffic to get towork, the

CBD and back home again, will have to live

with the situation a bit longer.

    Martheze concludes thoughtfully: My

grandfather was in the SA Army during

World War II. They fought the Germans in

Italy and as the German army retreated, the

enemyblewup the roads, thebridges and the

spans to stop the pursuingAllied forces. The

Allies in turn called in the SouthAfrican en-

gineers and it became a point of pride that

our countrymen repaired and rebuilt these

bridges and roads faster than the Germans

could destroy them! The rest of allied forma-

tions looked on with awe! How can it be that

we have fallen so far, that a combined seven

km of roadworks is taking so long to finish?

.Meanwhile, the City started on rehabili-

tation roadwork on Blaauwberg Road on

Monday this week. Traffic west-bound be-

tween Wood Drive and Donkin Road are be-

ing split to allow for the completion of reha-

bilitationwork in the centre of the roadway.

    Herron concludes: The City apologises

for any inconvenience caused and thanks

residents for their patience and understand-

    ing in this regard.

Fans of the McLaren Circus can breathe

a sigh of relief after the Wheel of Death

daredevil star, who suffered a dramatic fall

during his performance last week, is back

at the circus and well on his way to recov-

    ery.

The Wheel of Death star Jansen Grant

managed to escape serious injury, but dislo-

    catedhis shoulderwhenhe accidentally fell

off the spinning wheel during his world fa-

    mous act on Thursday night.

    However, Arnold Dickson acting direc-

tor of the McLaren Circus says that

Jansen did not fall from a great height.

He says Jansen was inside the wheel

when he jumped, lost his balance upon

landing after he had clipped his leg on the

side, which then threw him out of the

    wheel.

    Dickson says Jansen immediately re-

ceived medical attention on site and was

    later transported to hospital.

The doctor on duty could not put

Jansens dislocated shoulder back into po-

sition as this daredevil was still pumped up

with adrenaline. A specialist was called in

and Jansen was operated on, on early Fri-

day morning to put his dislocated shoulder

    back into position, he says.

Jansen was kept in hospital overnight

for observation and was released the next

day. Hes back at the circus, says Dickson.

He says Jansens injury is pretty severe

and he has some bruises and cuts that need

    time to heal.

Jansen will be out of action for at least

four to six weeks, but he is hoping for a

    much quicker recovery, says Dickson.

    JansensWheel of Death performance is

our headline act, but we have managed to

add some new acts and move the show

around to maintain our world standard of

a circus that roars with fun, he says.

McLaren Circus fans also posted get well

wishes on Facebook. One such fan, Riana

Baard-Van Der Westhuizen, who was also

at the show when the accident happened,

says: It was terrible to see. Therewas dead

silence in the audience. We started praying

for him (Jansen) immediately. So glad that

he is okayandhope the recovery is speedy.

    Jansen, a 24-year-old Australian is a sev-

enth generation member of the world fa-

mousAshton family andhas been in the cir-

cus all his life. Jansen started training on

the Wheel of Death at the age of 14.

    ANDR BAKKES EN TINA BURGER

Inwoners in die omgewing van die Che-

    vron-raffinadery sal vanaf 2015 moontlik

skoner lug kan inasem wanneer baie stren-

    ger wetgewing in werking tree.

    Volgens James Vos, wyksraadslid, verse-

in die artikel getiteld Chevron told to cut

emissions by half berig oor die moontlik-

My seun was altyd gesond. Vandat ons

hier naby die raffinadery woon, het my

    kind meer lugweginfeksies gekry.

n Anonieme suster by die Milnerton-kli-

niek s sy ondersoek daagliks pasinte met

    lugweginfeksies van Bothasig en Milner-

ton. Daar is gereeld kinders met asma,

brongitis asook herhaalde infeksies in die

o, ore, neus en bors. Sy skryf hierdie in-

feksies toe aandie lugbesoedeling indie om-

    gewing.

Vos s hy is al jare lank n inwoner van

die gebied. Hy ondervind self die impak van

die besoedeling en onuithoudbare reuk wat

    van die raffinadery afkomstig is.

Tydens n onlangse vergadering van die

    belastingbetalersvereniging in Goodwood

het n gemeenskapslid gekla oor sinusitis,

wat volgens hom deur Chevron se uitlaat-

    gasse veroorsaak word.

    Delight Aitken, Chevron-woordvoerder,

ringsprojek. Di projek is daarop gemik

    voldoen.

arents and teachers are once again

urged to ensure that children knownev-

er to trust a stranger after a close call

for a learner of a school in Parklands.

The child, apparently, nearly got into the

car of a strange man were it not for the inter-

    vention of concerned resident Yvette

    Huysamer.

Table View police are still investigating the

matter, but in the meantime the following

warning by Huysamer will suffice: Children

should never climb into cars of people they do

    not know!

She elaborates on the recent incident

I saw this man talking to the child on the

opposite side of the road. The child walked

over to the car and he looked hesitant. I

turned into a driveway behind the vehicle

and saw the man open the passenger door.

I shouted to the child, Dont you dare get

in that car! I asked if the child knew the

man and the answer was No.

    Shouting

She called the child over to her after

which the man started shouting at her.

Huysamer took the child to school her-

self which she thought was ironic, be-

cause right after she told the child not to

get into a strangers car, the child got into

    hers.

Only after the childwent into the school-

    groundsdid theunknownman turnhis car

    around and leave.

    Local police spokesperson, Lt Elizabeth

Munro, says that they are aware of the in-

cident and that it is highly concerning,

even though no formal charges were laid.

Says Munro: The registration number of

this specific vehiclewas distributed to Table

    View Neighbourhood Watch members, who

are the eyes and ears of the police. Together

with the police, the Schools Forumwill issue

She also gives a generalwarning to all par-

the safety of their children to and from

school. If not possible, it must be enforced

to the child not to talk to strangers, not to

importantly, not to walk alone. This makes

Child sex shock at ACVV creche

    TINA BURGER

    S

    hocking allegations of four-year-old

    children playing sexual games with

    each other including sexual simula-

tion on the playgrounds of a Goodwood

creche, were denied by all authorities in-

    volved.

Allegations of molestation and abuse at the

    Afrikaans Christian Womens Association

(ACVV) Creche in Bothasig have been dis-

missed by the Department of Social Develop-

ment. The national manager of the ACVV,

Nicolette van der Walt, also emphasised that

the department has investigated the mat-

ter but could not find any cause for the

    complaints lodged against the creche.

She did admit, however, that procedures

for the lodging of complaints were seem-

ingly not followed to the letter.

    Parents complain

One of the parents who complained told

TygerBurger that she noticed her four-

    year-old daughter was misbehaving after

she came home from the creche inOctober

    last year.

    When I askedmydaughterwhyshewas

acting out she said that boys should not be

allowed to play with girls at the creche.

She thought this was strange because

her daughter also came homewith sand in

her pants and was scratching over her

    dolls genitals with a pen.

My daughter complained tome that the

boys at the school were playing a so-called

bum-bum gamewith her and other girls,

    she says.

She said it was very sore down there

when I wiped her after bath time. I asked

her why and she said the boys had also

stuck their fingers up her genitals.

She says her oldest son, who goes to the

aftercare at the creche, saw a boy lying on

top of his sister in the tunnel on the play-

ground one afternoon in November last

    year.

    Myson toldme theboyhadpulleddown

his pants and was lying on top of my

    daughter.

The mother sought counselling for her

    daughter in December last year.

    Her daughter now apparently shows

signs of trauma, as she explains: She is

    extremely rebellious,wets herself regular-

ly, wakes up at night from bad dreams

all signs that the psychologist warned us

to look out for, which is in fact signs of

    trauma.

The mother noticed that her daughter

did not want to go to the creche in the

mornings and that redness appeared often

    around her genital areas.

    A second anonymous parents daughter

also attends theACVVcreche and she says

her daughter also complained about a simi-

lar game in which her daughter and three

    other children were involved.

My daughter now refuses to go to the

creche because the boys pull down her pants

and touch her inappropriately, she alleges.

A third parent also said her daughter had

an encounter with the bum-bum games.

She says that it wasnt just a once-off inci-

dent, but rather something that happened

over a period of time on the playground.

She also said that it was dealt with by her

and there appeared to be no further effects

    on her daughter.

She said her daughter was wetting herself

regularly until the incident came to light

    and then the wetting stopped.

She too has concerns about the feedback

from the creche and says it is not to her satis-

    faction.

The creche said they did not feel the need

to talk to the parents of the boys involved,

but I feel this type of behaviour should not

come into play because it is not just experi-

menting to see how different their bodies

    are.

She adds that a four-year-old child does

not just come up with a game like bum-

bum all on their own and says the boys in-

volved must have seen sexual behaviour at

    home.

    Response

TygerBurger spoke to the principal at the

ACVV, Ria Fourie, last week and she vocif-

    erously denied the allegations.

I have never heard of such a game. These

games are not being played by anyone at this

    creche.

She says that if it happened it was an un-

    seen once-off incident.

The third anonymous mother says her

complaints should be on record since last

year because she took it up with the creche

    and the ACVV head office.

    MelanyKuhn, spokespersonof theDepart-

ment of Social Development concludes: No

evidence was found to support the allega-

    tion. TheDepartment has also corresponded

directly with the parents concerned in this

    regard, she said.

    ANDR BAKKES

Jennifer Rush reckons that if a woodchuck

could chuck wood, then it should chuck as

    much as it could!

    TygerBurger asked her this question

(amongst others) during a one-on-one inter-

view at Table Bay Hotel on Monday.

This newspaper was granted 30 minutes

with the superstar, who co-wrote and per-

formed that timeless classic, The Power

of Love. Jennifer is in South Africa for a

handful of live performances, the first two

being at the Cape Town Convention Centre

    this Friday and Saturday.

At first the question about woodchucks

might seem rather insignificant. Surely it

reveals a lot about her personality?

    No...Actually, it is insignificant.

But its nonetheless the first time shewas

asked this question in a thousand inter-

    views!

Jennifer Rush, the Jennifer Rush, will be

    blowing South African audiences away

with her mezzo-soprano voice during the

    coming weeks.

This is the first time she will perform in

the country that has always considered her

to be one of the best.

She has toured all over the world (and

would, according to her, even perform in

the Antarctic if more than 20 seals bought

tickets), so South Africans are literally

    starved for some supreme vocals.

And she is more than just a powerful

voice, shes also a poet and a philosopher.

I cherish so many things, but its not

healthy to be too nostalgic. One should al-

ways look to the future and stay positive.

She continues: My family was always

very passionate about music. My brothers

were particularly serious one played the

saxophone and the other guitar. We lived

in close quarters, so the noise levels were

always a problem for the neighbours!

Jennifer never thought she would be a

singer, but when she finally decided to fol-

low her heart she flew higher than anyone

    before her.

    Nothing cameeasy though.Breaking into

    the internationalmarketmeant she needed

to change her German name (Heidi Stern).

Now I go by both names its very com-

fortable. My family call me Heidi, but other

people who love me just as much call me

    Jenn, says Heidi/Jennifer.

After the name change the hits followed:

25 Lovers, Flames of Paradise, Ring of Ice

and Madonnas Eyes paved the way for the

song that is still as popular today as it was

    in 1985.

I have easily sang Power of Love more

than 10 000 times. Despite this I still feel a

    connection to it.

Like, dagga should be legal, man

People came out in their numbers at last years

Cape Town Global Cannabis March, and even

    next week. PHOTO: BELOWTHELION.CO.ZA

    TAMMY PETERSEN

    H

undreds of people from across the city

are expected to take to the streets next

    week to promote solidarity among

    dagga users.

    Organised by the National Organisation

for the Reform of Matekwane Laws in South

    Africa,NORMLZAand Iqela Lentsango: The

Dagga Party of South Africa, the Cape Town

Global Cannabis March on Saturday 4 May

will be attended by those who support the

legalisation of the plant as an economic re-

    source for public benefit.

    JeremyActon, the leader of theDaggaPar-

ty which is registered for the 2014 national

elections, says participants will be celebrat-

ing their diversity, unity andmutual respect

for each other and the herb.

    The partys newsletter, The Daggablad,

says dagga was one of the many traditional

smokes used by Africans before the advent

of the Dutch and British empires.

It was also a source of fibres and the seeds

were a valuable source of human nutrition.

    Common

Dagga was first outlawed in South Africa

    in 1911.

If one views the polices dagga prosecu-

tion statistics, it is clear that dagga use is

a very common practice and should be re-

garded as a legitimate historical cultural

practice among citizens which should be re-

spected by narcotics laws and by the Bill of

Rights of our Constitution, the newsletter

    reads.

Dagga law enforcement costs South Afri-

ca millions of rands to imprison otherwise

    law-abiding and economically active people.

The legalisation of daggawould allow the po-

lice to have their workload lightened, allow-

ing them to deal with real crimes that have

real victims, such as theft, murder, assault

    and fraud.

Acton says it is important that legislation

legalises dagga and that this is carefully

crafted to maximise the benefits and mini-

mise any harms and its control by a dagga

    elite.

The benefits go far beyond merely allow-

ing adults freedom of choice to smoke or in-

gest weed, which is medically beneficial to

all users of the plant, he claims.

Legalisation would allow all poor citi-

zens to become producers of resources and

poverty will thus be greatly alleviated.

    States in the USwheremedical marijuana

has been legalised have also seen reductions

in traffic accidents, road fatalities, drunk

    driving arrests, violent and domestic

crimes, hard drug use and the suicide rates

    in young men, he adds.

But not all are in favour of dagga being le-

    galised.

    Mercia Samuelson cannot stomach the

sweet smell of dagga smoke, describing it as

    a poison crippling the youth.

She blames dagga for starting the down-

ward spiral of her only sons obsession with

    chasing temporary highs.

    Shaundiedof aheroinoverdose fouryears

ago shortly before his 21st birthday.

He started smoking dagga with his

friends when he was 16, she recalls. De-

spitemynagging, he didnt consider his hab-

it serious because everyone was doing it.

    Paranoid

Over time, she noticed gradual changes in

his personality. Shaun went from being a

pleasant, clever child to a paranoid person

convinced the world was out to get him. He

dropped out of school the next year and

walked around in a semi-conscious state,

staring at theworld through dead, bloodshot

    eyes.

One night he didnt come home.

    Hewas gone for twomonths,Mercia says.

Then one day, out of the blue, he was back.

But the boy who returned wasnt my Shaun.

    He was a half-crazy, drug-addicted monster.

At 18, her once talkative, intelligent sonhad

turned into an unstable, aggressive thief.

I watched the life in him die.

I prayed for him, no matter how many

times he stole frommy house, attacked me or

ran away. But the day he died, she says, all

    I felt was relief.

Mercia believes dagga served as a gateway

drug for her childs battle with addiction.

It starts small, but escalates into anuncon-

trollable itch which needs something strong-

er to be scratched. Whenever I get a whiff of

that sickening substance in the air, I wonder

whether the person puffing on that joint

knows he is slowly destroying his life.

Dr Ellapen Rapiti, a general practitioner

and drug counsellor, says contrary to popular

arguments of dagga being anatural substance

and not harmful to the user, research has

proved the drug indeed has a negative impact

on the body, specifically the brain.

It has been found to slow down reflexes

and response time, it increases the heart rate

andputsusers at greater risk of lungdisease,

    he explains.

    Psychosis

Mentally, it affects the IQ and concentra-

tion levels of adolescents, leads to psychosis

and makes people with a family history of

mental illness more susceptible to schizo-

    phrenia.

Rapiti is adamant the negative side-effects

outweigh the good, relaxing euphoria smok-

    ers get after a joint.

He agrees that dagga is a gateway drug,

basing this on research he has done in poorer

areas where 99 % of drug addicts admitted to

    first using dagga.

Despite this, I do feel it should be decrimi-

nalised, Rapiti says. It is a phenomenon

which clearly cannot be policed. These re-

sources, of which there already is a short-

age, should rather be used to fight serious

    crimes in our communities.

A more effective use of money spent on

policing is education. Let people know

what they are doing so they can make an

    informed choice.

Promote information to the ill effects of

this substance so that it can lead to its erad-

    ication from our society.

In its most recent report, the Anti-Drug

Alliance SouthAfrica (Adasa) in its annual

survey on drug addiction in the country

found that dagga wasmost peoples drug of

    choice.

More than 35 000 respondents participat-

ed in an online poll last year. The report

finds that the use of dagga has increased

by 11 % and the use of nyope, which is a

mixture of dagga and cheap heroin, rose by

    8,46 %.

While the analysis found the use of drugs

is evident across age groups, most users

were found to be between 22 and 35 years

    old.

Puffing on a perfectly rolled joint, Evan

Reed savours the effect of the natural

herb which has split societys opinions of

    drugs for years.

Reed has been smoking about 12 joints

like cigarettes every day for the past 16

    years.

The father of two argues that not every-

one who smokes weed experiences behav-

ioural problems or goes on to chase a

    stronger high.

I am 34 and have never even tried any

(other) drugs, he says. Smoking has nev-

er caused me to become violent or turn to

    crime.

Dont blame the substance, blame the

    smoker.

I am a father of two, have been married

for 10 years and a loyal employee at an elec-

trical company for 15 years. I could be any-

one, and the only difference between me

and anyone else is I enjoy relaxing with a

    joint.

was altyd baie grnd. Hy vertel hoe dik-

wels daar opvoerings was, hoe Kruik (die

destydse Kaapse Raad vir Uitvoerende Kun-

ste) elke maand opvoerings kom gee het.

Ek sou graagwou h ditmoet weer terug-

kom.

sport. Ons moet weer terug beweeg na des-

tyds. Ondersteun ons weer, s hy.

En dis wat TygerBurger in samewer-

king met die Wordsmiths Theatre Factory

nou gaan help doen.

    Want ons Kan/Cause we Can-liefdadig-

heidskonserte in die burgersentrum se tea-

    ter aan.

QI: Rotary Melkosstrand hosted a funfilled evening on 12 April at

the Country Club in Melkbosstrand. The aim was to raise funds

for a school bus for the newly developing high school in the

village. The Melkbosstrand High School opened its doors last year

and already has students in Grade 8, 9 and 10. Local businesses

donated prizes for which raffle tickets were sold. The bigger

prizes went to the winners of the trivial pursuit contest. The

crowd also bid eagerly on red wines and other articles that were

auctioned by Christine Petts, a local entertainer. Photographed is

    Ons is Sharks-ondersteuners

wat in die Kaap bly baie lief

vir ons land en natuurlik vir

    rugby.

    Dit was met groot opgewon-

denheid dat ons vir die eerste

    keer op Nuweland gaan rugby

kyk het. Ons het saam met

    vriende, wat Stormer-onder-

    steuners is, gegaan.

Groot was my skok om uit te

    vind die meeste mense daar

sien n rugbywedstryd net as n

    verskoning om te gaan drink.

    Opgetof in ons ondersteuners-

drag, het ons met groot afwag-

ting in die ry ingeval. Op pad

    na ons sitplekke het menige

    dronke my man aangegluur.

My man is lank en dra n

baard en dis al asof die

    dronkes hom aangesien het as

    n bedreiging. Teen die trappe

op het n jong man my man s

    van naderby probeer kyk. Sy

neus het amper aan my man

    sn geraak. Gelukkig het sy

    vriende meer maniere gehad

    en hom daar weggeneem.

    Ek het my verwonder aan

    die mooi stadion. Die rugby

    het begin. Met erge misnoe

het ek gesien hoe twee ouer,

    gesope manne twee jonger

    vroue voor ons probeer op-

chat. Dit het s erg geword

    dat die vroue opgestaan en

geloop het. Die man agter ons

was besig om sy seun te leer

hoe om n span uit te jou

    wanneer hulle skop. Die ergste

    is dat die kommentators die

hele tyd oor respek vir die

    spanne gepraat en liedjies

    gespeel het.

Toe die Sharks amper n drie

    gedruk het en ons natuurlik

    opgespring het van opgewon-

    denheid toe word ek van

agter met n baadjie geslaan en

ges ek moet sit, want hulle

kan nie sien nie. My man is

hard op die skouers gedruk om

    te gaan sit.

Met die brief wil ek net s:

    ek is teleurgesteld in die

    rugby-ondersteuners in die

Kaap. Ons sal beslis nooit weer

hier rugby gaan kyk nie. Daar

    Na aanleiding van Koert Meyer

    se teenkanting teen die dood-

straf (Death penalty is not the

    answer we seek, TygerBurger,

    10 April) die volgende:

Ek respekteer die feit dat ons

    almal verskillend is en van

    mening verskil, maar n mens

    moet eerlik met die feite

    omgaan. Dit is onteenseglik

    bewys (in verskeie lande) dat

    die doodstraf n ernstige

    afskrikmiddel is om dood te

maak. Enigiemand wat al op n

    wrede moordtoneel was, waar

    n onskuldige vrou of bejaarde

persoon tot die dood toe geveg

het vir hul lewe, sal weet dat

    die doodstraf vir die skuldige

die gepaste straf is. Om die

    vergifnis van die Almagtige te

gebruik as n rede om die

doodstraf af te keur, getuig nie

    van regverdigheid nie. Die

    Almagtige God het rels

neergel vir ons lewe hier op

aarde. In Sy Woord gee hy ook

die gevolge van wat met ons sal

gebeur, indien ons op n sekere

    manier optree. Met ander

    woorde, jou dade het gevolge.

En s moet dit wees dat

    misdade die gepaste straf moet

kry. En die gepaste straf vir

moord is die doodstraf. As jy n

ander mens se lewe neem, het

jy nie meer n reg op jou eie

    lewe nie.

My ouma is in 1984 in

    Goodwood verkrag en vermoor.

    Die moordenaar is gevang,

    gevonnis en ter dood veroor-

    deel.

    Die Almagtige God kan steeds

    die moordenaar vergewe en sy

siel red, indien hy sy lewe vir

die Here sou gee en om vergif-

nis sou vra, voordat hy gehang

    is.

Dit verander niks aan die feit

dat hy steeds die gevolge van

sy optrede moet dra nie. Ook

vir ons as familie gee dit

    berusting en kan ons aangaan

met die lewe, wetend dat die

    moordenaar sy straf gekry het,

en nie met sy lewe aangaan, en

    dalk weer kan moor nie.

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Wemust all

    put pressure

    on Sanral toll

Apart from the rural poor, it is expected

that the middle class urban community

of Cape Town will be hardest hit by

Sanrals proposed new toll project on the

    N1 and N2 highways.

    Although Sanral has not released

    information pertaining to possible toll

fees as yet, Capetonians using the N1 and

N2 to commute, could pay almost double

in transport costs, if the E-toll system in

Gauteng is anything to go by.

As if that is not enough consumers can

also expect the usual price inflations

linked to the increase in transport costs.

Yet, with this severe likelihood hover-

ing over our head and the imminent

court case to prevent it still three weeks

away on 16 May, Sanral this week

    shamelessly revealed its 2013-2017 strate-

gy, which could see the R300 also being

    tolled!

Where will this all end and can we

expect our national government to at any

point intervene on behalf of the already

    overburdened taxpayer?

Not likely, if one considers President

    Jacob Zumas comments on national

television last year, backing toll roads

saying that it is the way to go, if we

want good roads in this country.

Not even threats or national strikes on

the side of tripartite member Cosatu,

    could prevent Sanral from steamrolling

their way onto Gauteng roads, where

tolling is expected to start operating in

two months time, despite a court battle.

Only one alternative seems to remain.

    The pressure of the masses.

    Bloubergrant Pre-Primary School recently

turned 25 years and the school fete on Satur-

day 27 April will celebrate this landmark.

The fun will last from 09:00 to 13:00.

This years school fete will provide a con-

tribution to Little Lambs who distribute ba-

by packs and essentials to families in Du

Noon. By taking part in fundraising activi-

ties the children show their commitment to

    sharingwith less fortunate than themselves.

The school is the pride of all thosewho are

associated with it. In the late 1980s Table

Viewwas growing at a phenomenal pace and

it was realised that there was a need for an-

other pre-primary school in the Blouber-

grand area. Fernanda de Andrade with the

financial support of nine guarantors set the

wheels inmotion and on 2 February 1987 the

school was officially opened by themayor of

Milnerton, George Mellet. There were, at

that stage, no surrounding walls and lots of

unwanted creatures such as scorpions, rats

    and snakes.

The school started with the very basics.

During the next 25 years the school kept on

growing and soon also offered after school

care as well as holiday care.

Assistant teachers were also employed to

ensure that all the children received the at-

    tention they needed.

Now the school offers an environment

where the children can flourish and be pre-

pared on a social, emotional, physical and

    intellectual level for formal schooling.

    Proud of 25year history

    Chloe Smit.

Twinkle toes: SALT had an amazing response to the call on 16 April to go barefoot and

donate a pair of shoes that can be distributed to those who dont have. Over 20 local

companies and schools participated. Noahs Ark PrePrimary Schools Taryn Lotz, Troy

Ferreira, Tayla Lotz, Luke Walton and Katelynn Scholtz also joined in the charity drive.

According to SALT, over 9 000 pairs of shoes were collected in Cape Town during the day.

SALT distributes the shoes to grassroots organisations working in local communities such as

Du Noon, Joe Slovo, Melkbosstrand and Atlantis.

Cold feet: On 16 April the Bayside Mall Centre management staff went barefoot in

As autumn starts chilling the air and Cape

Town starts preparing for its red wine and

fire winter hibernation, the Century City

    again.

It will be held on Sunday 28 April from

Century City (follow Intaka Island signs).

Trenton and Free Radical are playing out

Of course the children have been taken

For two days the building was teeming

with green Ubulele shirts. They went about

cleaning and painting the roof, sanding and

painting the outside walls and window

    frames. The bathroom was transformed

with a new coat of paint, new toilet seats and

cute Mickey and Minnie Mouse accessories

and stickers. Beautiful new cupboards and

paint gave life to the old dull kitchen.

In the classroom and office the Green

The school apparently didnt hold back

learners coming to school barefoot, and a lot

charity event as successful as possible.

This event was the first to be covered by

    the schools communications team (known

    as A-Vida).

A-Vidas Nicky Els elaborates: Every day

out of the box kind of thinking that defines

our school community. We are committed to
