Has pop culture played its part in popu-larising gangsterism?This is a question that many people

across the peninsula are talking about afterthe recent spate of gang related violence inthe Western Cape.While police and various political and

community leaders try to find solutions cer-tain sectors are beginning to think that weshould start looking at the root of these prob-lems.Many have tried to lay the blame on eco-

nomic circumstances but it has beenpointedout that poverty has always been a part ofour society yet in previous years it has pro-duced its fair share of professionals who

have risen beyond their circumstances.A retired teacher who did not want to be

named spoke about experiencing thosechanges through the dark days of apartheid,and acknowledged how attitudes of learnerschanged as the media changed the face ofmodern pop culture.

Composers“During the apartheid years our youth

were influenced by a pop culture that wasinfluenced by the likes of Miles Davis andMarvin Gaye, even Michael Jackson,” hesaid.“The poetry of composers like Bob Dylan,

Langston Hughes, and Bob Marley, madethem aware of freeing their minds, and onthe local scene the music of local heroes like

Robbie Jansen, Basil Coetzee, and AbdullahIbrahim were the theme songs of the fightagainst apartheid.“What has happened to this freedom for

which the youth from Bonteheuwel, BishopLavis, Hanover Park and all over the CapeFlats fought so hard?”He continued by pointing out how as a

teacher he noticed that when the “music”changed, the children changed because theworld was giving them gangsters in pop cul-ture to become their new role models.“Too many of our radio and TV stations

then, and still today, want us to believe thattheir ‘ratings’ and audience research dic-tates what they feed to the minds of ouryoung.“We are reaping the harvest of what they

have sown into those minds.”Carol Edson agreed with these thoughts

and pointed out that the image of the anti-he-ro is also being popularised.

Disrespect“We also see that genres like rap and dub-

step must have a dark edge with foul lan-guage, and disrespect for woman, wherethey are always portrayed as scantily cladprostitutes,” she said.“Our youth see this constantly and it be-

comes acceptable and ‘cool’ to be imitatingthese attitudes.”Michael Malan pointed out that too many

people have allowed the roots of these prob-lems to flourish.

“I’m more inclined to look at hip-hop and rapas being the protagonists for gangsterism,”he says.

“With guys wearing their trousers to justunder their butt crack, baggy sweat shirts,loads of jewellery and bouncing around with‘attitude’ as if they are the most importantperson in the world, has all led to teenagersmimicking their actions, and with peer pres-sure, being led down a road that has led todeath and destruction.”

“We believed the lies propagated by theformer government and current govern-ment, the education systems, the church andeven our families and friends, and, as a na-tion, we’re too scared to stand up to thosewho oppress us.

Popularisation“Could it be that South Africa has taken

on too much of the West, particularly Ameri-ca, and tried to copy them in all they do, tothe detriment of our societies?”

Abdel Naroth felt that it may be too sim-plistic to lay the entire blame on pop culture.

“Parents are the best role models any childcan have and they need to take responsibili-ty when their children step out of line.

“They need to be more present and proac-tive in their children’s lives,” he says.

Dave Solomons, from Bonteheuwel, who isalso a singer who performed with many ofthe top jazz acts in Cape Town for manyyears, agrees that the the popularisation ofmediocre music is only one of the factorsthat has played a part in the growth of gang-sterism.

“The education system is also to blame,”he says. “They took music out of our schools.

“In the past our schools produced so manystars on the soccer, rugby and cricket fields,as well as top athletes. These activities usedto keep us together even if you played for op-posing teams, you played your game andshook hands at the end, and even forgedfriendship that lasted a lifetime that way.”

Joey Collision, from Ravensmead, consid-ers himself a bit of a cultural activist, feelsthat attacking the root of the problem is ofthe utmost importance.

“Since the mid 1980s when radio stationsstarted feeding our children this rubbish, Iwarned people that we would reap the bene-fits of making the gangsta music popular.

“Everybody laughed at me, I called radiostations, and I was told that their ‘research’showed that this is what listeners wanted.

“Today they just continue to infect youngminds, but are they going to change now? Idon’t think so because then they will haveto accept the blame.”

FreedomBuddy Wells, renowned saxophonist,

sums it up by pointing out that the world hasforgotten about its artists who want to leavea legacy of positivity.

“It is only through disciplined practisethat an artist or musician can attain free-dom of expression, what many call mastery.

“Behaviour is much the same. Withoutresponsibility, freedom is impossible. If weall behaved in a responsible manner, exter-nal laws and controls on us would not be ne-cessary.”

Local learners will be benefiting from en-vironmental education over the next fewmonths.

A group from Florida Senior Secondaryin Ravensmead were part of more than1 200 Grade 10 learners from 11 disadvan-taged schools in the Western Cape whowill be hosted to a day of scientific investi-gation by the Intaka Island Environmen-tal Education Centre at Century City aspart of its Outreach Programme.

Leandri Van der Vyver, Eco-Centre co-ordinator for the facility, said that the newLife Sciences curriculum for Grade 10 rec-ommends learners do a scientific investi-gation of a local ecosystem and explore theinteraction between the living and non-living components of the ecosystem.

“Intaka is a thriving wetland ecosystemand as such it provides a perfect platformfor this investigation particularly giventhe centre’s diverse educational team,which is fully equipped to run these cours-es.”

She added that they were not only reduc-ing the teacher workload required to pre-pare the investigation, but were also as-sisting the learners with a real hands-on,outdoor educational experience in a safeand secure environment.

Van der Vyver said while the pro-gramme was very popular with schools,not all were able to cover the costs in-volved including transport costs and ma-terials.

“We are extremely grateful to Absa bank

for sponsoring this programme enablingus to offer it to more than 1 200 learnersfrom 11 previously disadvantagedschools.”

Beneficiary schools had been identifiedby the Life Science Subject Advisor of theWCED and to date they had hosted sevenschools, each over a day or two with thebalance due to visit in the next month orso.

Schools benefiting from the sponsoredprogramme are Bishop Lavis High; JohnRamsay High, Uitsig Senior Secondary,Inkwenkwezi High, Masibambisane High,Leiden High; Voorbrug High, ProteusHigh, Robinvale High and Sinenjongo Sen-ior Secondary, with more to come in thefuture, no doubt.

Unemployed youth in the community aregetting a major boost to find work througha very active organisation.YoungPeople@Work which launched last

year is an organisation of youth by youth,who are determined to support unemployedyouth to turn their lives around.Founder Frank Julies says that the organ-

isation has already trained hundreds of un-employed youth from various communitiesand assisted many to access employment.“In our structure youth are regarded as

assets not liabilities,” he said.“Youth are treated as the leaders of today

not tomorrow and are actively part of thedesign of programmes, not just passive re-cipients of predesigned programmes.”“Their positive and limitless energies are

harnessed to support their holistic develop-ment and they are taught that finding a jobmaybe important, but finding and constant-ly working on oneself is more important.”The organisation operates at three levels

to empower unemployed youth.Through its Youth Empowerment Weeks

it enters communities and hosts a freethree-day life skills workshop at a local li-brary in partnership with various stake-holders.The focus is on professional job-seeking

and networking skills, personal develop-ment and leadership aswell as a day of shar-ing employment and training opportunitiesthrough various partners.Its partnershipwith local libraries is stra-

tegic since it believes that our librariesmust become centres of learning.Through the Smart Cape computer sys-

tem at libraries, YPW volunteers are de-

ployed to offer free basic computer literacyto unemployed youth.Participants who request more advanced

training are referred to the YPW Computerand Life Skills Academy in Bishop Lavis.Here a three-month computer and life

skills course is offered with lots of benefits.Those who complete the course are referredto employment agencies.Aftercare and followup support is an inte-

gral part of the their approach, with an SMSnotification system keeping youth on its da-tabase informed about employment oppor-tunities.Youth are also encouraged to volunteer in

their community to plough back and todeepen their skills base to becomemore em-

ployable.Julies added that this was in line with

their ethos of life-long learning.“Job shadowing opportunities are organ-

ised where volunteers shadow profession-als in theirworkplaces and learn new skills.“It also operates a unique CVBankwhere

participants’ CVs are uploaded for easy ac-cess from potential employers. Help is at hand for families who need sup-port against drug abuse.The Victory’s Light Drug Support Group

inBelharwants the community to know thatthey are there to support them.Started in 2009 it meets at the Baptist

Church in Alabama Road on Mondays from19:00 and is not just for recovering addicts,but also for families affected by drug abuse,and users who want to change their lives.Elmari Daniels, one of the founders of the

group, said that she started the group whenshe realised that her daughter had a drugproblem.“It was while looking for help for her that

I realised that where were very little re-sources in our community, and there weremany other parents like me who needed

help,” she said.“The families of drug users are still our

main focus, but we also see to the needs ofrecovering addicts, and those who want tochange.“A lot of our activity is abouthelping these

families through counselling, and we can al-so do referrals to rehab centres if needed.”Secretary of the group, Jacobus Jaftha,

added that the group wanted people to knowabout their activities and to act before a situ-ation becomes out of control.“Parents and caregivers must be aware of

what their children are doing,” he said.“If they are aware of a problem, theymust

Delft SAPS deal crime ablow with 100 arrestsDelft SAPS took to the streets in fullforce this weekend in their fight againstcrime.According to Brig Hendrik Jansen his

staff arrested and detained 102 suspectsfor the weekend for a variety of trans-gressions.These included arresting a suspect

wanted in connection with murder aswell as various cases of robbery, assault,domestic violence, housebreaking, theft,possession of housebreaking implements,intimidation, possession of fake money,possession of dangerous weapons,riotous behaviour, loitering, possessionof stolen property, as well as possessionof various illegal drugs.Jansen also added that besides these

arrests police also recovered two stolenvehicles, and confiscated an assortmentof weapons, and drugs to the value ofabout R7 000.

Listeners to a local radio programmewill bebopping to beats for Blikkiesdorp nextweek.It’s all coming together at The Jolly Carp

venue in Retreat on Saturday June 8 whenlisteners of The Jazzy Jive showonFineMu-sic Radio (101.3FM, Saturdays from 22:00 to1:00) get together to raise funds for the play-ground and resource centre at the tempo-rary relocation area near Delft.LydiaMartin explained that the influence

of the worldwide web and Facebook had abig part to play in getting this gig going.“Gary van Dyk, also a reporter at Tyger-

Burger, first presented this show on Cap-eTalk, but since the beginning of the year ithas moved to FMR,” she explained.“Over the last few years he has built up

a huge listenership, not just locally but alsooverseas where ex-pats started tuning in viastreaming.“One of them, Beryl Segers from Sydney,

Australia, then started following his reportsin the paper and read the story about theneeds in Blikkiesdorp.“She immediately felt that she wanted to

do something and started raising funds forthe Blikkiesdorp for Hope Foundation inAustralia.“When she announced on Facebook that

she was planning a trip here to hand overher contributions we felt that as a listeners’

group we wanted to add something to hercontribution.

“What better idea than to have a lekkergathering of listeners to meet each other,and raise money for a good cause.”Beryl Segers was very excited about the

Pep team lays it onfor children in need

Pep Stores have been busy putting some“pep” back into their community.

In the past few weeks their staff have beenhard at work with various projects in theCorporate Social Investment (CSI) pro-grammes.

Ashley Solomon, planning manager in thecompany’s Kids’ Division, explained that itwas all part of the company’s aims to pridethemselves as being a retailer who givesback to their customers.

“Our planning and buying teams havecombined resources and quite a few commu-nities have been earmarked for CSI initia-tives this year,” he said.

“In the past few weeks we have specifical-ly contributed to the following threeprojects: Tygerberg Children’s Hospital,Eurecon Primary School in Eureka Estate,and St Joseph’s home for the Chronically Illin Montana.”

“At Tygerberg Children’s hospital ourcontribution went to decorating the walls ofthe ground floor to provide a child-friendlyenvironment, which is therapeutic andwould contribute to the provision of goodquality service to the young patients andtheir parents.”

“Bedding and clothing for the childrenwere also part of the donations made to thehospital.”

At Eurecon Primary School there was abuzz of excitement as their teams got busy

with some repair work at the school.“We have embarked on fixing and replac-

ing the toilets and wash basins in both boys’and girls’ bathrooms where almost 80 % ofthem were not in working condition.”

“The school also has no sick-bay area andwe contributed by establishing one by paint-ing and furnishing it.”

“Further work will be done by providinga cemented paved area where parents canpush the prams to the creche area across acurrently sanded area.”

In Montana St Joseph’s home for theChronically Ill cares for about 300 childrenwith 24-hour nursing, access to medical

care, rehabilitation in the form of physio-therapy and occupational therapy.

“On Friday 17 May we took a team of about60 dynamos from Pep to spend the day creat-ing a little garden for the girls’ section aswell asdonating twosix-seater tablebencheswhere they can spend time after school, ei-ther doing homework or spending time withtheir friends.”

“This was all done while we were able todo a little braai for the kids and could sharesomething to eat with them. We will contin-ue to giveback to our customers andcommu-nities who have supported our company forso many years,” he concluded.

Getting the Sick Bay at Eurecon Primary intoshape were Pep’s painters, from front, Jaco DeKlerk, Nadine Zikmann, Jason Samuels andCandice van Schalkwyk from Pep, under thewatchful eye of deputyprincipal Scheepers.

The church is planning a uniquecommunity arts developmentinitiative in the centre and theyalready have programmes in placefor the residents.

They have now embarked on afurther initiative to invite quali-fied art trainers, experiencedperforming and visual artists, orstudents needing practical experi-ence to offer their services volun-tarily in training the participantsin their projects.

Some volunteers are alreadybusy with various activities butthey need more to cater for theneeds of so many youth in thecommunity.

They are also inviting morechildren and youth in the area toenrol for the various activities thatare on offer.

Enrol on Saturday at an openday event from 11:00.

This is also an invitation forchildren to join up with the firstRavensmead Community JuniorChoir practise under the leader-ship of community workers Bennyand Elicia Farao.

A breakthrough has been made re-garding the unknown body of a fe-male, who was set alight anddumped earlier in May this year.Mfuleni policewerenotified of the

body discovered in the bushes ofBrentwood Park, which was that ofan unknown female.Along with the assistance of the

community, a male was taken in forquestioning and admitted to the of-fence, leading the police to the ar-rest of a second suspect.The two suspects, 19 and 34 years

old, were arrested on 14 May andwere charged with murder, for

which they have appeared for a bailapplication at the Blue Downs Mag-istrate’s Court, on 23 May.The case was postponed to June

and the suspects will remain in cus-tody.According to a confession by one

of the suspects, two more suspectsare still at large.The victim is known to be 26-year-

old, Yvette Neel who was picked upin Wesbank, the place where shewas said to be staying with her boy-friend.Yvette was apparently transport-

ed to Kuils River, where she was

shot and later set alight in Brent-wood Park.“The breakthrough by police in

identifying her, came through theForensic Department, whereby herfingerprints were lifted andchecked,” spokesperson for theMfu-leni police, Captain NomathembaMuavha, confirmed.Her personal details were made

known, as she had previous casespending against her, Muavha ex-plained.Her death was only made known

to her parents in Belhar on Thurs-day 23 May.

The side started the new season brightly,ensuring they got out of the relegation zone.But now the boys in green and white wantto make up for this. To the man, they believethey owe it to the supporters who have stoodby them through difficult times the firstnines games of the season.

Coach Josephs has been trying out differ-ent combinations, some of which wereforced through injuries or suspensions. Hebelieves the team is not quite where hewants it to be, but has seen positives in theperformance of the boys. He has given mostof the players a run, and now the task is tofind that winning streak, the click that willbring the side together and make them intoa hard-playing unit.

Fans have been urging the team to go outand fight, and are still confident that thecoach is on the right track to getting EasternRovers back to where they belong, at the top.

“This cup is very important because weknow what it would mean to the supportersand the club as a whole if we win it.”

year in the top 10.Tiaan is theTygerBurger Sportstar of the

dates back nine years ago when he met hiscoach, Marcel Otto. The two has been to-gether ever since.“I really couldn’t have asked for a better

coach. In the nine years we’ve built a solidrelationship and he knows how to get thebest out of me. He surely deserves a lot ofcredit. If it wasn’t for him, I doubt that Iwould be where I am today.” said Tiaan.

youth division hewas ranked second on theIAAF rankings and last year fourth.This year however, it’s his first year com-

peting as a junior and lying sixth on the logindicates that he is on the right track seeingas he has the whole of next year as well toclimb the ranks.“It takes a massive amount of hard work

and dedication. We are talking six days aweek preparing for competitions and fivedays in the off-season.“It involves everything from heavy

weight training in the gym to explosivepower exercises to stamina and endurancetraining to stay in top physical shape.”With the Africa Junior Championships

in Germiston looming, he has his one goalin mind – beating his current Africa juniorrecord of 13.51 seconds.“I’m going to give it my best shot. But I

think it might be tricky given the cold win-ter conditions.”

Grace College (USA) is visiting South Africaas part of an experience for their soccer team,which plays in the highly rated AmericanCollege League to do soccer coaching withkids in the townships.They alsohave the intention of scouting for

potential players who could study at Gracein America for free and any degree of theirchoice on a sport scholarship in exchange forplaying soccer for the college in the leaguewhich is just below the MLS where DavidBeckham played his soccer.Since their arrival last Monday, the team

have visited Gardenia Primary and Excel-sior High Schools in Belhar sharing with thelearners about reaching for your dreams andalso demonstrating some of their amazingskills with the soccer ball.They have also visited Manenberg, Bishop

Lavis, Khayelitsha and Belhar.They took the Belhar Spurs juniors for

coaching on Tuesday and Thursday. Most oftheir work was done in and around Belharbecause of their link with BreakthroughChristian Church, a vibrant communitybased church.The church partnered with Belhar Spurs

FC to stage the international match betweenGrace College and Belhar Spurs u-23. It wasa glamorous affair with many dignitaries.The match itself was a cracker, played in

front of a packed stand with Grace scoringa spectacular first minute goal by Steven Fe-mer with a left foot bend into the far corner.The second goal from Grace came from

their Serbian player Nikoli Kranzic with aneasy tap in after some good interplay downthe right flank. Grace was awarded a penaltyin the secondhalf but the penaltywas superb-ly saved by Matthew Japhta. The third goalwas scored in the second half and Grace Col-lege won the match 3-0.
