Police have been making some importantarrests.
On Sunday at about 6:40, a security guardworking at Voorbrug Sportsground in Delft,found the body of a 22-year-old man, whiledoing his patrols.
The deceased, later identified as LwandoMbaleki from Lawrence Way, Leiden, sus-tained several stab wounds to his neck, backand chest.
Further investigation indicated that thedeceased was stabbed during an argumentbetween him and his friends. The informati-on gathered, led police to two addresses inthe area where they arrested two suspectsaged 22 and 33 for the murder.
The suspects will appear in the BellvilleMagistrate’s Court during this week, as in-vestigators are still searching for two moresuspects.

While doing crime prevention duties atabout 4:00 police received informationaboutdrugdealing at ahouse in the area andobtai-ned a search warrant. During their searchof the house in Tubelitsha, they recoveredabout 500 units of heroin, with an estimatedstreet value of R25 000. Police a 21-year-oldCongolese and a 27-year-old from Mozambi-que for the illegal possession of drugs.
. Last Wednesday members of the Bellvil-le South Crime Investigation Unit were outon patrol at about 14:10 when they spotteda suspect wanted in connection with a theftthat happened in William Taylor Street.
When they searched him they found cashand bags of tik in his possession.
The 36-year-old has been charged with il-legal possession of drugs.

A meal makes a big difference in the lifeof a hungry learner, but business is com-ing together to win the fight.
Last week the feeding programme of theShoprite Group to fight hunger and malnu-trition countrywide was celebrated with aTen Million Cups of Hope event at NerinaPrimary School in Bonteheuwel.
This is a major milestone in the company’sfeeding programme to fight hunger and mal-nutrition countrywide which has nowserved a total of 10 million cups of Roycosoup and bread to help improve the nutri-tional status of the people of South Africa.
The 12 Shoprite mobile kitchen unitswhich have become a familiar sight in thoseSouth African communities living on thebreadline are distributing at least 300 000cups of Royco soup and bread per month, es-pecially to children and senior citizens, aswell as the thousands of people affected byjob losses.
Since the feeding programme waslaunched it has also reached out to commu-nities when disaster and humanitarian re-lief efforts became necessary.
During the course of the year the groupwill also expand theproject intoAfrica, pilot-ing one truck in Namibia and another inZambia.
At this event in Bonteheuwel Minister An-gie Motshekga, South Africa’s Minister ofBasic Education attended and praised thegroup for their initiative.
She commended them for the work they dowith their mobile kitchen units and empha-sised the importance of good nutrition for allSouth African learners.
“Hunger plays a major part in a child’sability to learn,” she said.
“Luckilywehaveprojects like thesewherecorporates are prepared to make a differencein society with initiatives like this, and weare humbled and grateful that that they aremaking the effort to help these children, andothers who are suffering in poverty-strickenareas.
“We are also proud that a company likethis is reaching out beyond the borders ofour country by expanding to our neighbours.We must remember by helping to make a bet-ter Africa, we will ensure a better South Afri-ca.”
Former Springbok rugby coach, Pieter deVillers, was also on hand to speak to thelearners and dish out some much-neededsoup and bread on the day.
He encouraged them take advantage of allopportunities that they are given to achievetheir best potential.
“Don’t listen to the lies that people wantyou to believe about coming from a place likeBonteheuwel.
“You are here and you can make a positivedifference to your community if you believethat you can be the best. The motto of thiscompany is “Shoprite Cares” and today they
are showing you how much they really care,but do you.
“If other people care so much about you,why don’t you show them your appreciationby going all the way to achieve your potenti-al. In that way you will one day be able tolook after your own needs, and then alsostart giving back to your neighbourhood,”he said.
Brian Weyers, director of the ShopriteGroup, says of this milestone that the super-market group is acutely aware of the on-going economic pressure on the less privile-ged sectors of society where unemploymentis rife.
“In deciding to launch this programme thegroup took cognizance of the link betweeneconomic development, poverty alleviationand malnutrition.
“We have re-looked at our role and respon-sibility in communities and have focused so-cial spending on helping more and moreSouth Africans who worry how they willfeed their families.
“Not only do we continuously strive tobring South Africans the lowest prices, butwe have broadened this with substantial so-cial support,” he said.
Each mobile kitchen is manned by threeShoprite staff members who are supportedlogistically by the Shoprite supermarket inthe area in which it operates.
A public relations team of nine people co-ordinates the relief effort countrywide.
The kitchens are kept stocked through ge-nerous contributions by soup manufacturerRoyco, Albany and Sasko to stock the 12units in operation.
Other corporate contributions to the fee-ding programme come from vehicle manu-facturers Mercedes Benz South Africa, Toyo-ta South Africa and Volkswagen South Afri-ca.

Your 5c pieces collecting dust indrawers can play a part in educa-tion for youngsters at an educarecentre in Elsies River.
At the Precious Lighthouse Edu-care in Balvenie Road they arestriving to enhance education atthis early stage and they started aunique appeal to the community tohelp them.
Beredine Klein, principal of thecentre, pointed out that educationis the key to a better future for ourchildren.
“These toddlers are the leaders oftomorrow and their learning startshere,” she said.
“Our teachers are qualified andhave the necessary skills to takeour children to the next level, espe-cially in reading.
“However, we are not always ableto provide the best educationalequipment for them, and oftenstruggle to buy food to feed the chil-dren from poorer families who have
nothing to eat.“That is why we are running this
project where we would like to urge
our community in helping us col-lecting 5c coins. We are hoping tobuy educational equipment and
food from the money collected inthis project.”
Klein pointed out that the centre
is serving the community with aunique service for the area.
“We are the only creche in ElsiesRiver operating from 07:00 to 19:00seven days a week.
“Apart from the normal educareactivities we also offer holiday andcare over weekends.
“This means that we cater forthose parents that have to work ona weekend to make a living for theirchildren.
“We are also open to the public onweekends. Children can be bookedin on weekends while their parentsgo shopping and be collected after-wards.
“In the holiday programmes wefocus on drama, art and culture,even including activities that intro-duce children to computers.
“In the aftercare programmes wefocus on assisting children withtheir homework, reading, andschool projects.”

Dié gebou in Charl Malanstaat,waar die Jan S. Marais-hospitaaleers geleë was, gaan binnekort dienas die universiteit se skool vir ver-pleegkunde, die grootste van sysoort in die land.
Raadslid Sam Pienaar, voorsittervan die probleemgebou-werksko-mitee, sê die oorname van die gebouen die proses om dié oorname inplek te stel, was gekoppel aan dieontruiming van die gebou.
Die gebou is tot onlangs besetdeur bykans 600 onwettige inwo-ners, onder wie verskeie Somaliërs.
Die gebou het in die afgelope jare ’nonderverhuringsnes geword.
“Totale oorbevolking het plaasge-vind in die gebou en as gevolg daar-van het ’n brandgevaar ontstaan,”het Pienaar gesê. ’n Paar weke gele-de is die gebou totaal en al ontruimen sekuriteitswagte hou sedertdien’nwakendeoog.Pienaarbeskryf dieontruiming as een van dié ontrui-ming-suksesverhale.
Larry Pokpas, institusionele be-planner en uitvoerende assistentvir die rektor, sê die UK is verbondetot herintegrasie in die sub-streekdeur middel van innoverende ven-nootskappe, stedelike vernuwing-strategieë en nouer bande met dieplaaslike gemeenskappe. Hy sê diebesluit om die gebou te verkry enop te knap, vorm deel van die UKse strategie om ’n aktiewe vennootte word in die ontwikkeling en ver-
nuwing van die Tygerberg-sub-streek en die Voortrekkerwegkorri-dor-verbeteringsdistrik (VRCID).
Pokpas sê planne sluit omvatten-de opknapping van die gebou in en’n aantal van die universiteit se ge-sondheidswetenskap-afdelings saldaar gehuisves word.
“Die gebou sal die primêre onder-rigperseel word vir gesondheidsaf-delings, wat van die hoofkampus afna dié fasiliteit sal verskuif.”
Hy sê die opknapping beteken datdissipline-spesifieke opleiding vangesondheidswerkers versterk salword. Die opgraderingsproses be-hels die herontwerp van groot delevan die gebou.
Na aanleiding van die ontrui-ming van die gebou, sê Pienaar dieuitdaging van dié proses is om men-se wat wettig in die land is (soossommige Somaliërs) te huisves.

Cultural creativity runs strongly in theveins of a young Ravensmead theatre ac-tivist.
Lendy Swartbooi is the daughter of re-nowned poet and playwright, the late Leo-nard Koza, and it seems that that legacy inthe arts is continuing as she is making hermark on the local theatrical scene. Influ-enced by her father she started writing playsand poetry while she was at RavensmeadHigh School between 1998 and 2002.
This year aspart ofTheUbuntuCommuni-ty Theatre organisation which she co-found-ed with Dominika Jablonska she auditionedone of her plays for the Zabalaza Theatre fes-tival that took place at the Baxter in March.
“My play, Mommy, I’m in Heaven, whichI also directed, was performed at the festivaland the script was nominated for one of thebest written scripts on the fringe produc-tions,” she said proudly.
“The other notable achievement was thatone of my drama learners, Lucricia Valen-tine, won an award for the best newcomerat the festival.”
Swartbooi graduatedfromNewAfricaTheatreAssociation in 2004where she was lecturedby Abduragman Adams(currently teaching dra-ma at the University ofStellenbosch).
During this time Ad-ams encouraged her topursue acting furtherand helped her to enrolat the University of CapeTown in 2005.
Here she was furthernurtured by another le-gendof SA theatreThokoNtshiki andgraduated inPerforming Arts in 2008.
“After graduating Iworked for the Universi-
ty of Cape Town teaching community thea-tre in various schools,” she continues.
“Here I encountered the likes of seasonedprofessionals like Ivan Abrahams, AndreSamuels and Basil Appolis just to name few,on a Theatre in Education road show whichgave me more experience in the arts.
Not restingonher laurels shehasbeengiv-ing free drama and dance classes at Ravens-mead Library and assisting a few primaryschool learners with a reading programme.
Isabel Young the Children Librarian wasthe one that encouraged her to start this pro-gramme.
“The library is helping me with books forthis project,” says Swartbooi.
“Ravensmead Library has a structuredcommunity outreach programme that helpsto change the mindset of the learners and toshow them that there is a way out of poverty.
“I want to urge parents to help and encour-age their children to read and join this kindof programmes so that their children willflourish both academically and in the extra-mural activities.”
Lendy is currently an assistant librarianat Durbanville Public Library.

Robin Carlisle, the Minister for Transportand Public Works in the Western Cape, hasreleased the road fatality statistics for thisyear up until the end of April.
“Although the total number of deaths onour roads over April 2012 was 107, fivedeaths more than the previous year’s 102,this time around the month contained twolong weekends, instead of the usual one,”Carlisle said.
“While slightly more drivers, motorcy-clists, passengers and pedestrians werekilled this year, forensic pathology statis-tics show that this year, for the first timesince 2008, not a single cyclist died.
“The 104 deaths on our roads in Januaryshowed a slight drop on last year’s 109, al-though February (99) and March (92) thisyear recorded almost unheard of numbers– below the 100 mark.
“Last year’s February death toll was 129,while 147 lives were lost in March last year,’said Carlisle.
“What these numbers tell us is that whilefatalities are dropping overall, holiday peri-ods remain the most dangerous times of theyear to be on the roads.”
Carlisle called the overall 2012 tally of 402for the four months January to April “a mas-sive improvement on last year’s 487, 2010’s502, 2009’s 537 and 2008’s 562”.
On 6 October last year Carlisle announcedthat behavioural changes brought about bythe Safely Home Campaign had resulted inthe saving of the lives of 773 men, womenand children.
Carlisle said he anticipates that the West-ern Cape will be passing the “1 000 livessaved mark” in the next few weeks.
“I would like to acknowledge the increas-ing number of motorists who are driving re-sponsibly and doing their bit to get everyonesafely home,” he said.

An organisation in the community wantsto empower young girls to take control oftheir lives.
The Black Canvas Youth Development Or-ganisation is inviting community youth orga-nisations, schools, churches and other intere-stedparties to call on themfor tohost a specialworkshop for young women.
Melanie Rutgers is the director of the pro-gramme and she wants more girls to take partin the TLC 4 Me workshops which are infor-mative, fun and innovative to empower themand break negative cycles in the community.
She explained that the idea for the projectderived from a conversation that she was ha-ving with her daughter about the challengesyoung girls are faced with in society.
“A few years ago, my son and daughter re-presented the Nelson Mandela FoundationJunior Government,” she says.
“My daughter was deputy speaker and myson was the first speaker for the opposition.During this time they participated and deba-ted many issues that affect our youth.
“When the process was over they wanted tohelp make a difference and that is how theconversation to help girls started.”
Rutgers pointed out that with 26 years’ ex-perience of working with problems related to
women in various areas, she knows how it af-fects girls in all communities.
“However, I do believe that with early inter-vention we can assist and empower our youthto make better choices and break cycles thatmay affect their contribution to the world.
“The research and needs analysis was doneoveraperiodof yearsworkingwithyoungwo-men in skill development projects I developedfor an organisation that I worked with beforeand still have a good relationship with them.
“We worked with young women at riskfrom communities all over the Cape Metroand during these years I found that these yo-ung women needed more than hard skills alo-ne. They needed to heal and develop skillsthat aid them to move to the next level whilstbecoming strong women which helps thembreak negative circumstances that have besettheir generation since childhood.”
She added that at Black Canvas projecttheir hope was to change and shift the mind-sets of young women regardless of their cur-rent situations.
“They need to know that they still have thedivine power to change who they are in thesituations they are faced with.
“The workshops we hold deals with activi-ties ranging from feminine hygiene, skincareand hair care to dealing with abuse in teenagerelationships and everything in between in-cluding nutrition and eating disorders.
“Our workshops are fun, innovative and in-formative. We work with an amazing teamwho are all professionals in their fields andare always willing to assist.
“We have just completed workshops at theManenberg People’s Centre for teenage mo-thers where it was amazing to see how incre-dibly intelligent our young women are whengiven these platforms to interact and supporteach other.”

Scouts in Belhar are celebratingtheir first Springbok scout in 35years – and its a girl!
Jodie Layman made history forthe 1st Belhar Scout Group, whenshe was awarded the prestigiousachievement in scouting on Satur-day 19 May.
This awardalsomadeherparentsJerome and Jillian very proud,when she got the award at the an-nual Scout Awards Ceremony thatwas held in Mowbray.
Jodie (17) is presently in matricat The Settlers High School in Bell-ville.
Mom Jillian still beams withpride as she recalls her daughter’shectic programme in scouting over
the last year.“While the hectic programme for
scouting was important to Jodie itin no way distracted her from herresponsibilities at school.
“She ably serves in a leadershipcapacity at her school while main-taining good grades and takes partin hockey, plays violin in the schoolorchestra, and she is an activemember of Karate Zen at juniorbrown belt level,” she said.
Jodie joined the scouts as a cubin 2001 when she was seven, earn-ing one of the highest achievementsat this level, the Leaping Wolf badgein 2005.
She has been a very enthusiasticmember of the group in Belhar forthe past 12 years and presentlyserves as Patrol Leader in the troop.
Her passion for sticking to the
scout aims of “being prepared” and“do your best”, has given her themeans to face all challenges in herlife.
In 2010 and 2011 she was awardedthe Scout of the Year award for heractivities and has also representedthe scouting movement on TV onseveral occasions.
During her scouting Jodie has at-tended various leadership develop-ment and skills training courseswhich created an awareness of andinvolvement in service to othersand the community.
Her skills amongst others includehiking and mapping, camping andcooking, first aid, communityawareness projects, environmentalawareness and outdoor code, teamwork and peer leadership.
“The brotherhood of scouting de-
velops an understanding and a re-spect for others,” she says.
“The mission of the movement isalso to promote a commitment to acode of values which results in self-discipline and the development of amember’s full potential that will en-able each one to take a meaningfulplace in society.
“Scouting has taken me to manydifferent and interesting places.From Cape Point to Table Moun-tain, Hout Bay, Muizenberg, Fran-schhoek, Tygerberg Hill, LionsHead and Cedarberg Reserve.

Grade 10 learners from 25 disad-vantaged Western Cape commu-nities will compete for the covet-ed title of South Africa’s TopYoung Innovators against learn-ers from KwaZulu-Natal andGauteng in the inaugural HIP2B²3M Innovation Challenge.
In the Western Cape, the chal-lenge kicked off at Spine Road HighSchool in Mitchells Plain on Mon-day 14 May.
Here, learners from Bloekombosand Wallacedene SecondarySchools in Kraaifontein joinedmore than 300 other Grade 10 learn-ers in the first round of the chal-lenge.
Backed by the department of edu-cation in each participating prov-ince, the challenge is the brainchild
of HIP2B² and innovative multina-tional technology company 3M, andfocuses on improving everyday lifethrough innovation.
Since 2002, non-profit youth or-ganisation HIP2B² has built a brandthat works to stimulate youngminds and interest them in science,maths, technology and entrepre-neurship.
Participating learners in theseevents are then invited to enter, inteams of two, their own innovation.They are tasked with identifying areal problem that affects them,their family or community – fromhow to simplify everyday chores tohow to stay safe – and proposing asolution using the application ofscience and maths. Through 3M’sinvolvement, the learners will beexposed to the stories behind the
company’s many inno-vative products thattouch and enhance eve-ry life, how an ideaprogresses to marketand the kind of think-ing that makes 3M aleader in innovation.
Five finalist teamswill be selected by ajudging panel of repre-sentatives fromHIP2B², 3M and otherindustry experts with ascience or technicalbackground.
Leading up to the fi-nal round, the finalistswill have the opportu-nity to job shadowwithin industry dur-ing the Septemberschool holidays and topresent their projectsand prototypes to a mentor for in-put and guidance.
Throughout the programme,learners will also be exposed to sci-ence and engineering related ca-reers, encouraging them to chooseand work hard at these studies,which could lead them towardsthese professions.
Thereafter they will return to 3Mheadquarters in Johannesburg on18 October for the Innovation Chal-lenge Final, where judges willaward one team with the prestig-ious title – SA Young Innovators for2012.
Said Serita Esselaar, 3M corpo-rate manager: “The need for askilled technology workforce is par-ticularly great in South Africa, and
can only be addressed through cre-ating a culture of intellectual curi-osity.”
The big picture of South Africaneducation is captured in the inter-national benchmarks.
In the 2010 World Economic Fo-rum rankings, South Africa isranked 130 out of 139 countries inoverall education; and 137 out of 139for quality in maths and science ed-ucation.
It’s no secret that the quality ofeducation and the number of mathsand science graduates in a countryis directly linked to the sustainabil-ity of that economy. South Africa’spoor results necessitate greater in-tervention from all parties – busi-ness, government, communities
and families – for the betterment ofthe nation.
“We are closely aligned withHIP2B²’s inspirational quest toawaken the innovator in South Af-rican learners through changingteen’s perceptions about maths andscience and encouraging them tocontinue with these studies to mat-ric and beyond,” she said.
HIP2B² speaks to and reaches anational audience of over 1,7 m highschool learners through an interac-tive platform of touchpoints, in-cluding its award-winning maga-zine, website, digital radio station,Facebook, MXit and Champion pro-gramme.

Depressie en bipolêre steuring word ge-woonlikbehandelmet behulpvanvoorge-skrewe medikasie en psigoterapie. Daaris egter gevalle waar pasiënte nie reageerop hierdie behandelingsmetodes nie. Virsulke pasiënte kan elektro-konvulsiewebehandeling (EKB), of elektriese skokbe-handeling soos dit in die volksmond be-kend staan, oorweeg word.
EKB kan lewensreddend wees en het aldramatiese resultate opgelwer. Dit werkdikwels wanneer ander behandelingsme-todes onsuksesvol is. Daar word geskatdat tot 70% depressiewe persone wat EKBontvang, gunstig daarop sal reageer.
EKB word reeds vir dekades gestigma-tiseer en is deur die media voorgehou aswreed en barbaars. Vandag is dit steeds’n prosedure wat vrees inboesem, hoof-saaklik as gevolg van onkunde.
In die 1940’s is hierdie prosedure son-
der narkose uitgevoer. Vandag is die pasi-ent egter glad nie wakker tydens die pro-sedure nie en onthou hy/sy ook geen pynof ongemak daarna nie.
Tydens die prosedure word ’n klein be-heerde elektriese stroom deur die breingestuur in ’n poging om ’n kort periodevan onreëlmatige breinaktiwiteit te be-werkstellig.
Dit duur ongeveer 40 sekondes. Hierdiestroom veroorsaak sekere veranderingein die chemiese stowwe in die brein,soortgelyk aan wat medikasie doen, netbaie kragtiger.
In ’n klein studie wat gedoen is deur na-vorsers by die Universiteite van Aber-deen en Dundee, Skotland, is bevind datdaar na EKB ’n afname was in verbin-dings in breinareas wat te make het metdepressie en kognitiewe funksie. Dit het’n verbetering in depressie teweeg ge-bring.
EKB word gebruik wanneer depressie-we of maniese pasiënte nie goed reageerop medikasie nie, ’n hoë selfmoord-risikois, of psigoties is. EKB is dikwels dan dievinnigste en beste behandeling beskik-baar.
Die keuse om EKB te ondergaan moetopenlik met die pasiënt en/of familieledebespreek word.

They applied for their passports on 17April and thought they would probablyhave to wait at least six weeks to receivethem, but they actually received an SMSon 30 April to inform them they are fin-ished. They went to fetch them on 3 May.
This is certainly a positive to take for-ward in South Africa. This department isnot so pathetic after all. If you see somegood service, please don’t forget to smileand appreciate it. Op 12 en 19 Maart pos ons ses pakkiesby ons plaaslike poskantoor na die VSA.
Die totale posgeld beloop R1 505,10. Ditis verjaardagpakkies aan kleinkinders.
Van die ses pakkies het net vier hul be-stemming bereik. Dit is die eerste keer intwee jaar wat ons van ons plaaslike pos-kantoor se diens gebruik maak.
Op 8 Mei het ons drie pakkies van Ty-gervallei se poskantoor gepos en almal hethul bestemmings bereik.
Waar is die fout? Hoe verduidelik onsdit aan kleinkinders wat wag vir hul ver-jaardagpakkies?

Hats off as wearrive home safeThe death toll on the Western Cape’s roadshas been described as “a massive improve-ment” in comparison with last year’s sta-tistics.
Transport and public works ministerRobin Carlisle recently released the fatali-ty statistics for 2012 up until April.
A total of 107 deaths were recorded forApril, five more than the same period lastyear. However this time around, Aprilcontained two long weekends instead ofthe one of last year.
This year’s fatality figures are the low-est they have been over the last five years.
Every year since 2008 a drop has beenexperienced in comparison with the previ-ous year.
Between January and April in 2008, 562deaths were recorded, in 2009 this numberwas 537, in 2010 it was 502 and last year487 were recorded.
Hats off to Carlisle, the driver of theprovince’s Safely Home campaign, as itseems the campaign has the desired effect.
Last October Carlisle announced thatbehavioural changes were brought aboutby this campaign.
This campaign has resulted in the sav-ing of no fewer than 773 lives!
The campaign is aimed at reducing thenumber of fatalities by 50 percent by theend of 2014.
It seems very possible that this might bereached, as theprogrammehas led to a 27,6percent reduction in just under threeyears.

As a very young person my parents, fami-ly, neighbours, Sunday School teachers,school teachers and the public, whetherprivate or departmental, taught us thegreat value of respect for oneself and mostof all for others.
Whatever culture we are attached tothe practice of respect was fundamentaland regarded as the root or anchor we canrely or depend on to be successful in ourrelationship to our religion and our veryexistence.
I remember that the topic of sex was ta-boo and kept under wraps and when youwere finally exposed to that privilege youwere in control of your urges and rapewas a rare occurrence.
Discipline was practised in every stageof a person’s life because if a person step-ped over the line relevant sanctions inmany forms were executed or set in mo-tion to rectify ill discipline.
The biggest compliment that was prac-tised was respect for one’s parents (theonly commandment from God with a pro-mise or condition attached was “Honouryour mother and your father” so that youmay have a long life and it will go wellwith you) and other persons no mattertheir status in all spheres of society.
These days we have reported and unre-ported rapes on a daily basis and societywants to know why is this happening andare looking for answers to find a cure forthis scourge.
Logic tells me we are not going to findthis inwaywardDNAor forensic or scien-tific tests.
No, look for the cause in what you areallowed and exposed to see and hear in ge-neral.
Sex in whatever disguise advertised is
going to result in urges.Those scenes and sounds we are expo-
sed to have to find sexual release and Godforbid the first person irrespective of ra-ce, gender, age or mental levels that fallsinto the hands of such a charged up pre-dator, rape is going to be the result.
We tear our hair out and rant and raveif we see and hear about how our societystruggles to control ill discipline.
We search for answers as this has con-sequences and we ask ourselves wheredid our well serviced guidelines fall offour road trip with all its warning signsin life’s journey.
Some of us think that the naked artwork of our president is justified, thisman is our chosen leader and we have torespect that we have chosen Mr Jacob Zu-ma as leader of South Africa.
When we look at the above we are legal-ly reminded that ignorance of the law isno excuse. We do have constitutionalrights but is there a limit to that rightsor can we pose a legal question withoutgetting emotional or too patriotic?
Is there still grounds to reverse rightsthat are causing us to behave criminallyor cause extreme negative results to themajority of us.
In our relativistic world popular habitsand cultures constantly challenge bib-lical values and therefore we have to livesuch a godly life that we must ensure wecan distinquish between what is good andwhat is evil.

The girls recently returned to help the chil-dren re-plant their beans into soil.
Regional finalists across the country willnow embark on greening projects around thecountry. This project will see children nation-wide taught about the importance of indige-nous trees. A hands -on planting session willsee hundreds of trees planted during NationalEnvironment Week (4 June to 8 June).

Top Cuban jazz musician, Roberto Fonse-ca, and local jazz icon, Jimmy Dludlu,will be teaming up in two special Afro-Cuban concerts in Cape Town this week-end.
Hosted by the City of Cape Town andShado Twala of Black Olive Entertainmentin support of the Nelson Mandela Children’sHospital, the inaugural jazz fusion concertswill be held respectively in the St George’sCathedral and the Cape Town City Hall.
Both concerts on Friday and Saturdaystart at 19:00.
As part of this Cuban/Cape Town culturalexchange, the musicians will present aworkshop at the City Hall for young emerg-ing jazz musicians from the Western Capeon 3 June.
“These concerts will launch the ‘SoundBites’ series of musical events aimed at rais-ing funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’sHospital which is due to open in 2014 in Jo-hannesburg. Part of the proceeds of the ca-thedral concert will go toward the church’sroof repair fund,” says Twala.
Fonseca will be launching his new album,YO, that is dedicated to Africa, at the CapeTown concerts.
Jimmy Dludlu has been hailed as one ofSA’s hottest jazz talents. His skills, not onlyas a guitarist, but also as an insightful com-poser and arranger, underline the music hecreates on stage with his outstanding style.His latest album Tonota recently won thisyear’s SAMA for Jazz Album of the Year.
South African painter Nico Phooko willjoin the musicians at both concerts to ex-press his musical impressions on canvas.

While he confesses that he couldplay the basics since he was nine,the jazz bug started biting when heheard about some of the risingyoung players on the scene.
“There were young cats likeJonathan Rubain, Julius May andothers who were not much olderthan me, but they could play someincredible music.
“Through them I started to lis-ten to the older generation of play-
ers like Jimmy Dludlu and AlvinDyers, and the international leg-ends like Pat Metheny, GeorgeBenson, getting into the music ofMiles Davis and John Coltraneand knew that this is what I want-ed from music in my life,” he said.
It was only after leaving highschool that hereally got intothe seriousside of thingswhen hejoined theCape MusicInstitute runby CamilloLombard andEzra Delportin 2007.
“This wasan excitingtime for me asI completed atwo-yearcourse withtraining inmusic theory,songwriting,music busi-ness, stageperformance,
band ethics, life skills, industrialcommunication, arranging, com-posing and music production.
“It was also here that I realisedthat hard work has its rewardswhen Iwas chosen to represent theCapeMusic Institute at theNorwe-gian Music Academy in Oslo in
2009. Here I attended some musictheory clinics and jazz workshopsand thus far it is the only formaltraining I’ve received and I’m stillstriving to learn all there is tolearn about life and music,” hesaid.
Williams pointed out that Lom-bard and Del-port still play amajor role inhis life.
“These twowonderfulmentors havebeen extreme-ly influentialin many of myachievementsand even mymost recentsuccess suchas beingawarded an on-line scholar-ship to studythroughBerklee Col-lege of Music.
“I am verypassionateabout what I do
and I enjoy going the extra mileand giving my all in whatever it isI need to do to elevate myself. OnSaturday it will be the second timethat I am featured on this festivaland I am looking forward to per-forming with the wonderful DelftBig Band again.
“You just have to look at thisband to see how the music can em-power youth from disadvantagedcommunities. We need moreprojects like this out there to fightthe temptations of crime and gang-sterism in our communities.”
Highlights in this musician’s ca-reer so far include opening forJonathan Butler on his recent SAtour, various appearances at theCape Town International Jazz Fes-tival, playing at the Montreal Jazzfestival last year, and an extensivetour of Europe last year that in-cluded gigs in Switzerland, Portu-gal, Germany, the Netherlands,Belgium and London.
The Artscape Youth Jazz Festi-val takes place at the ArtscapeTheatre on Saturday starting at19:30.

With twomusicvideos, anewsingleand a tour on the way, the Jesse Jor-dan Band is “Ready for the world”.
The band released their album,Ready for the World, in January thisyear at Die Boer, and will soon bereleasing their second single off thealbum, “Galaxy Boulevard”, alongwith music videos for the title trackand the new single.
The Jesse Jordan Band has beenin existence for about 11 years.
The current line-up of Jesse Jor-dan as frontman on lead vocals andacoustic guitar, Hein Schultz onlead guitar and backing vocals, JPCrouch on drums and Logan Scotton bass, has been together for aboutfour years.
They went through a quiet patchwhen they changed management,but since working with Van Plati-num Artist Management, they havebeen going full-steam ahead.
Jesse says the name of the bandstarted that way because it was go-ing to be just a solo project.
The name became a brand and
was left as is.All the band members
have the privilege of beingfull-time musicians, but thismeans that they have to haveprojects on the side.
“In Cape Town it’s difficultto sustain yourself in oneband if you are not a topworld touring band,” JPsays, before adding: “That’swhere we are heading.”
In July, the band will beheading out on a short tourwith Raoul and the BlackFridays. They are planning abigger tour for summer.
A project the band is excit-ed about is the SunshineProject. “‘Sunshine’ is a songI wrote for my gran whopassed away last year,”Jesse says.
JP explains that the song is aboutwhat grandmothers mean to every-one. “That’s the message behind thesong,” he says.
For the Sunshine Project, theband is asking fans to send picturesof themselves with their grand-
mothers to [email protected].

It was a marriage of fitness and historywhen close to 4 000 runners laced up forthe Jive Slave Route Challenge on Sunday.
Hosted in the city centre for the second time,the race saw participants make their way pastsome of Cape Town’s most significant historicsites, many of which are linked to the slavetrade.
The host club’s Lion of Africa Itheko Sport-ing Athletic Club and race founder, FaroukMeyer, could not have been more pleased withthe success of the event.
“It was way above our expectations,” saysMeyer, who adds that “everything went offjust great. Even the weather played along”.
He is already eyeing the race growth poten-tial. “I think this race can grow into one of thebiggest in Cape Town.”
Sister community newspaperPeople’s Post is the print mediasponsor of the race.
The race has four routes. Of the3 900 people who took up the Chal-lenge, 1 400 ran the 10km, 1 200 tookpart in the 21,1km half marathon,700 did the 5km walk and 600 tookpart in the 10km walk.
Meyer says he was “pleasantlysurprised”by thenumberof foreignparticipants. “They just couldn’tstop talking about it.”
Since race day he has receivedseveral positive emails.
For the first time the race ledcompetitors straight through theCastle, arguably one of the most fa-mous historical landmarks in thecity.
Another unique aspect to theevent was that a canon doubled asthe starting gun.
Asiphe Skabalanjane broke the tape in the10km women’s race, while Bulelwa Mtshaeicame second, followed by Ursula Frans.
Their respective male counterparts wereMathadazo Qhina, Sinethemba Mdzanga andPeter Tsawayo. In the half-marathon, Antho-ny Godongwana was the first to cross the fi-nish line,whileLindikayaMthangayi took sil-ver.
Sityhilo Diko claimed the last podium posi-tion. The top three in the women’s half mara-thon were Nomvuyisi Seti, Bulelwa Simaeand Dianne McEwan.
The first, second and third placed runnersin the half marathon won R1 000, R750 andR500 respectively, while the top three in the10km race won R500, R300 and R200.
All of the competitors who finished the racereceived medals.
