Everything was ready, up until the mo- ment they tried to collect the keys from the estate agent who sold them the house. It turns out the previous tenant never moved out. Eviction efforts According to the Sotheby’s Realty estate agent Helene Ludwig, who sold the house, incidents such as this are becoming more common. “The laws must be changed! It can’t go on like this! Presently you cannot evict some- one if they don’t have another place they can go to,” elaborates Ludwig. According to her the previous tenant, Pas- tor Ugochukwu Oparacho, had a signed agreement in which he acknowledged that he and his family were going to vacate the premise by 31 October last year. But Oparacho never left. That’s when the “nightmare” started for the Gordons, who were stuck with no accom- modation and all their possessions on a trail- er. They were supposed to move into the house they bought on 1 November. Despite paying the monthly bond they have still not moved into their house. More than two months later and Oparacho and his family remain in the Gordon’s house. According to Ryan Gordon, Oparacho has received an eviction order and must vacate the premises by the middle of February. But Oparacho has sought the legal advice of attorney Paul Sharoux, who has told Tyg- erburger that this matter is far from closed. Legal challenge Another local newspaper ran an article while the matter was still in court and Shar- oux says this was a case of contempt of court. “My instruction is to proceed to pull the whole application for eviction and subse- quently we might bring in charges of defa- mation of character. My client has no com- ment at this stage, but he will challenge whatever happens from a legal point of view,” says Sharoux. Gordon hopes the matter will be resolved as soon as possible. “There is an end in sight... I just try to look at the positives. At the moment the order says they must vacate the premises on 13 February, and if they are still there then the sheriff will remove them on the 15th. We can’t afford to continue renting and paying our bills, so we will be in the day they move out,” he says. The system has left him speechless. “I can understand the law protecting ille- gal eviction. It protects the innocent. But this is not the case,” he adds. Ludwig says Oparacho has signed a lease agreement for a year which was supposed to be terminated on 31 October. “They are illegal squatters and we have done everything by the book to get them out. I cannot believe our constitution protects them. “The pastor has been offered a selection of homes as alternative accommodation, but he refused point blank,” she concludes. One week is all that is left of a ridiculously wonderful summer holiday for Western Cape pupils. One week left to sleep late and one week left to conquer the Monkey Falls. This Ratanga Junction ride has been turning stomachs throughout the holidays. The Theme Park at Century City, which would have seen about 150 000 visitors come through the gates since the beginning of December, will be open till 20 January, every day from 10:00 to 17:00. Guinness World Record holder, Mav-ericks Big Wave Invitational champi-on and inspirational speaker ChrisBertish, recently tried to break the 24-hour stand-up paddleboard worldrecord.

Rough seas made the challenge un-safe for Bertish andmade tracking andfollowing the athlete unsafe for hissafety crew.

Last week Tuesday he attempted topaddle 170kms in 24 hours.

This initiative, geared to raiseawareness and funds for the plight ofchildren born with cleft lips and pal-ates, began on 6 January at 18:00 andBertish was picked up by the safetyboat just before 01:00 in the earlymorn-ing hours.

“It was the most menacing and con-fused sea state I have ever experiencedin my five years of open ocean pad-

dling and it became too unsafe to con-tinue,” Bertish said.

“Youcanhaveall the planning, prep-aration and logistics perfectly workedout, but the weather is the only uncon-trollable factor which, unfortunately, became extremely harsh at sea on thenight. I would nonetheless like to ex-press my gratitude to Cipla and IslandTribe for their support and to myamazing team for the backup on thisextreme adventure. I hope we raisedsome great awareness and money forthe Cipla Miles for Smiles initiativeand I hope we have drawn attention tothe challenges these young people faceon a daily basis which are far more se-vere than the challenge I faced.”

The Cipla Miles for Smiles initia-tive, in collaboration with OperationSmile, have facilitated just under 2 000corrective surgeries.

A raging wild fire in Bloubergrant threate-ned to spread to nearby houses, but quickwork by the Fire Department ensured thatit was extinguished before it could cause se-rious damage.

Last week Thursday evening a residentwho lives next to the open field near CoralRoad heard the crackling of the fire.

“It sounded almost like water dripping,”says the director of a children’s programme(Lollos), Ebert Janse van Noordwyk.

“I investigated and saw a massive fire inthe field. It was moving towards Melkbos-strand (North), right towards holiday ho-mes adjacent to the field,” he elaborates be-fore adding that these homes appeared to bevacant at the time.

Janse van Noordwyk saw many other re-sidents staring at the fire, but according tohim no-one phoned the City of Cape Town’semergency line or the fire department.

He took it uponhimself to notify emergen-cypersonnel andwithin tenminutes the firebrigade arrived.

Janse van Noordwyk also made a video, which he posted on YouTube and linked toTygerBurger’s Facebook page.

A short while later and the threat of firewas nullified.

Janse vanNoordwykwas full of praise forthe Milnerton fire department, who madeshortwork of the vegetation fire, and for thestaff working at the City of Cape Town’s 107number.

Flagging and inadequate matric results ha-ve been blamed on the government, racialinequality and a lack of resources, but ahandful of schools continue to defy thesechallenges.

Sinenjongo Secondary School principalKhulselwa Napote says the reason so manyschools fail to achieve targets is due to a lackof determination.

The school in Joe Slovo Park has becomea sterling example for under-resourcedschools in the province.

Seven years ago the school’s pass rate was27% but for the last four years there has ne-ver been a pass rate lower than 85%.

The school achieved just under 90% in the2014 exams with top learner, Nomakhakha-yi Mandiphiwe, earning five distinctions.

Of the 137 learners who wrote the lastexams, 122 passed.

“We are very proud of this sustained highlevel of performance,” says Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for the provincial minister ofeducation Debbie Schäfer.

Lacking decent infrastructure and re-sources, the school proved something lesstangible is needed to achieve good results.

“The teachers, parents and learners areall committed,” says Napote. “If you motiva-te your learners by inviting previous lear-ners to speak to them and be their role-mo-dels, then it goes a long way to convincingthem they should be doing well for theirown good. This works better than gettingprofessionals they don’t know to talk tothem.”

Past pupils talk to the learners duringSpring School and Winter School held du-ring the holidays.

Napote says analysing the results withthe parents, whether they themselves areeducated or not, is bearing fruit.

“The fact that we explain to the parentswhat it is that makes their child fail givesthem a feeling of being valued by the school. The teachers, parents and children all worktogether to achieve great results.”

The department believes Napote herselfplays an invaluable role.

“The principal has shown she is a strongleader,” says Shelver.

Napote took over at a time when theschool was doing terribly on the academicfront.

She has quickly remedied this with a goodwork ethic and superb micro management.

“The school management team, as welland an acceptance of the interventions offe-red by the department are more reasons forthe school’s success,” said Shelver.

School overcomes obstacles

Sinenjongo Secondary School’s NomfundoMshumi, accompanied by her sister NosiyamlelaSoyekwa, is overjoyed at passing.

Along with checking that your child’s uni-form, stationery and lunchbox is preparedfor the start of next week’s reopening ofschools, moms and dads have also been ur-ged to check their children’s health. The City of Cape Town warned last week

that these checksare crucial before the startof the new school year.Schools reopen on Wednesday, 21 Janua-

ry.The City’s Benedicta van Minnen, mayo-

ral committeemember forhealth, said thesechecks include general check-ups but alsovaccinations where applicable.According to the national childhood im-

munisation schedule children are given thetetanus and reduced strength of diphtheriavaccine, alsoknownas theTDvaccineat theage of six, followed by another round at theage of 12 years.“I want to urge parents to ensure that

their children receive these vaccinations, which is administered via an injection intheir upper arm. Prevention is always bet-

ter than cure.“Also, our clinics offer these immunisati-

ons free of charge. We still have a few daysleft before the academic year starts, so nowis as good a time as any to get the vaccinati-ons done for children who need to get theseshots,” Van Minnen said. She said the city’s health staff are also

well placed to provide advice on good nutri-tion, which is a key focus on the directora-te’s awareness and education programme.“It makes sense to prevent more people

from getting sick which is why we placesuch heavy emphasis on responsible beha-viour, but also good nutrition.“Our staff can help parents with advice

on finding a balance for their child’s lunch-box thatwill positively aid their growth anddevelopment, but also keep them healthy,”Van Minnen added. She said child obesity is a grave concern

around the world and people need to do eve-rything possible to promote healthy eatinghabits and exercise. In 2014 the city’s health staff visited near-

ly 600 places of learning across themetropo-le to promote good health.

Hundreds of endangered Africanpenguins are heading back into tothe wild thanks to the rescue ef-

forts of the Southern African Foundati-on for the Conservation of Coastal Birds(Sanccob) and its conservation partners.Since late October 2014, a total of 570

abandoned African penguin chicks havebeen rescued from the penguin coloniesand admitted to Sanccob’s seabird reha-bilitation centres in Table View (Wes-tern Cape) and Cape St. Francis (EasternCape).Every year betweenOctober and Janu-

ary hundreds of small fluffyAfrican pen-guin chicks are abandoned by their pa-rents when the adults start their annualmoult. During this time, the parents re-place their old, worn-out feathers with abrandnew set ofwaterproof feathers andare unable to hunt for fish and feed theiryoung during the three to four weekmoulting process when they lack theirusual waterproof coating.

Facing starvationAs a result, the chicks that have yet to

fledge are abandoned and face starvationunless Sanccob and its conservationpartners intervene. The abandoned penguin chicks are ad-

mitted to Sanccobwith the help of colonymanagers, SANParks (Table MountainNational Park andAddo Elephant Natio-nal Park’s Marine section) and CapeNa-ture. These colony managers have dedi-cated staff, who identify abandonedchicks by using a number of monitoringtools including observing chicks for pec-ked heads, hollow abdomens, begging

frommultiple nests and chickswith a lotof down feathers sitting on the shoreline. In addition, the number of moultingadults and the condition of the chicks(based on head andmassmeasurements)are monitored in the colonies throug-hout the year. Abandoned chicks are col-lected once or twice aweek by these colo-nymanagers and then safely transportedto Sanccob’s centres for rehabilitation.

Christmas chicksThese ‘Christmas chicks’ (as they are

fondly named) spend between six to 12weeks undergoing careful rehabilitationat Sanccob. The younger chicks are ad-mitted to Sanccob’s specialised ChickRearing Unit while the slightly olderchicks are cared for in the Nursery secti-on of the centre. Once they are at a fled-ging age, the correct weight, healthy andtheir feathers arewaterproof, they recei-ve the final nod of approval from Sanc-cob’s veterinary team and get releasedback into the wild.“This year, the chicks admitted were

in considerablyworsehealth than inpre-vious years, which is an indicator thatthe birds are immune-compromised andwould not have survived out in the colo-nies without human intervention,” saidVenessa Strauss, Sanccob’s conservati-on director. Thanks to thehardwork fromstaff and

volunteers, hundreds of these penguinshave already been successfully releasedback into the wild, surviving to raisetheir own chicks. The remaining chicks will hopefully

be released within the next month.

Beachgoers have been warned to be onthe look out for sharks during the sum-mer season.

According to a statement by the City ofCape Town, the presence of great whitesharks in the in-shore areas increases thistime of year. The Fish Hoek shark exclusion net is be-

ing deployed and retrieved daily and SharkSpotters are monitoring identified beachesto ensure the safety of all visitors to the seashore, council has stated.Since September last year, there have

been 57 shark sightings at beaches moni-tored by the Shark Spotters. There have been 36 sightings at Muizen-

bergCorner, sevenatFishHoek, five atMon-wabisi, three at St James, two at Kogel Bay,two at Glencairn, one sighting at The Hoekin Noordhoek and one at Clovelly. With the presence of great white sharks

close to the shore expected to increase overthe summer season, the City of Cape Townis ensuring that the necessary precaution-ary measures are being put into effect.Shark Spotters are monitoring identified

beaches and the Fish Hoek shark exclu-sion net is being deployed and retrieved dai-ly.

Effective barrierThe Fish Hoek exclusion net has proven

to be an effective shark safety measure bycreating a physical barrier preventing anysharks from entering the bathing area.Trials conducted during 2013 and 2014 in-

dicated that the risk to marine life remainsvery low and that there are high levels ofpublic support for the exclusion net becom-ing a permanent feature at the Fish Hoekbeach.Until March, the Fish Hoek exclusion net

will operate daily, depending on the weath-er.Weekends, public holidays and school hol-

idays will be prioritised. The exclusion net will not be deployed if

weather conditions (wind and swell) are

deemed to be unsuitable, and this will be as-sessed on adaily basis. Ifweather conditionsdeteriorate over the course of the day afterthe net has already been deployed, the netmay be removed as a precautionary meas-ure.Additionally, if there is a high presence of

whales or other marine mammals in the ar-ea the net will not be deployed.–The net will also not be deployed when

trek-netting is taking place off the beach. If a whale moves into the area while the

net is deployed, the Shark Spotters herd theanimal away from the net and out of the ar-ea, using the exclusion net boat. This is in accordance with the approved

whale disentanglement strategy and resi-dents should not be concerned if this occurs.

Operating hoursOn days the exclusion net is deployed, the

operating hours will be from 09:00 to 17:00,and may occasionally be extended to allowfor lifesaving training or events.

The Shark Spotters will keep beach usersinformed via Twitter (@SharkSpotters) andFacebook as to whether the net is deployed.Surfers arewarned to be vigilant in the ar-

eas between Sunrise Beach and MacassarBeach during the spring and summermonths, as research has shown that sharkpresence in these waters is extremely com-mon at this time of year.Surfers should be aware that shark sight-

ings at Noordhoek beach are common on thedays following a north-west wind.

The 2014/15 festive seasonwillgo down as one of the safeston record for the City’s

beaches. This is due to the number of

drowning incidents having-dropped significantly when com-pared with the previous festiveseason.Three drowning incidents were

recorded on beaches during thefestive season between September2014 and January 2015, comparedto 18 drowning incidents over thesame period in 2013/14.With tens of thousands of people

on the city beaches over the fes-tive season, this is an extraordina-ry feat, says City of Cape Townsport, recreation and amenitiesdepartment director Gert Bam.

Combined efforts“We are pleased that the com-

bined efforts of all role playershave yielded such positive re-sults. The department’s extensivesummer safety campaign helpededucate members of the public onbasic safety tips to observe whenswimming at the beaches. In addi-tion, law enforcement officers

have been highly visible and haveconfiscated a substantial amountof alcohol, which helped to reducethe number of incidents associat-ed with intoxication,” he says.

Quality of serviceThe decrease in the number of

drowning incidents also speaks tothequality of the lifeguard serviceprovided by Lifesaving WesternProvince and their associated life-saving clubs – particularly overthe weekends around Christmasand New Year’s Day when a num-ber of people were assisted by thelifeguards on duty, Bam says.

Designated areas“Despite the drastic drop, every

drowning incident is one toomany and each incident is docu-mented and reviewed to ensurethat further precautions are takento prevent such incidents fromhappening in the future,” he says.“Members of the public are re-

minded to swim only in designat-ed swimming areas indicated byflags and lawenforcement officerswho patrol beaches to assist in en-suring that people swim only in

designated areas.“We ask that all people respect

the instructions of both lifeguardsand law enforcement officers andalso report any irresponsible be-haviour in the water, such as peo-ple swimming off the rocks, sothat they can keep people safe.”

Safety tipsBeachgoers should keep the fol-

lowing safety tips in mind:• Always swim between the red

and yellow flags. The flags indi-cate where safe swimming areasare identified, and are supervised. An area outside of these flagscould have dangerous rip cur-rents and tides.• Only swim in areas where oth-

er people are present. Swim ingroups and advise friends or fami-ly when you go swimming.• If you find yourself in trouble,

raise yourarmandwave to attractthe lifeguard’s attention. Try notto panic, as this will make youtired.• If you see someone in trouble

in the sea, alert the lifeguards orfind trained help. Do not put yourown life in danger as well.

I have been reading withinterest the current debatebetween the anti and pro-gungroups.

Predictably, that old andwell-used expression that“those who live by the swordwill die by the sword” hasmade its appearance. A veryreasonable sentiment, to besure, but it does not stand upto scrutiny from a legitimategun owners point of view.Genghis Khan lived by thesword. So does the modern-dayISIS. Genghis did, and ISISsurely will, die by the sword. The rest of us, who need toprotect ourselves from thosewho, like them, seek to imposetheir will on us, have to livewith the sword. There is a verybig difference here!

Unfortunately, there are fartoo many people in this worldwho, despite what must surelybe an in-built knowledge ofwhat is right and what iswrong, choose to impose theirwill on others. History showsthat has always been how it is– and that is always how it willbe. Whether on a global level,or on a personal level, theprinciple is the same.

As far as divine interventionis concerned, I do not believethat any of the world’s multipleGods are going to come to ouraid and protect us. It would benice if this did happen, though. We would not have to worryabout wearing seat belts, locking our doors and gates orwalking in dark alleys. Wecould eat, drink and smokewhatever we wanted. We couldpark our cars and have nofears that they would not bethere when we came back. Inshort, we could simply rock onand not have to rely on otherpeople and/or clever devices toprotect and save us.

But, in a real world, wecannot just sit back and leaveour safety and wellbeing tosomeone else – or somethingelse. That is a cop-out. We have

to play our part and do whate-ver it takes to help God,whichever one we do (or donot) believe in, to help us. Thetrick here is to ensure thatwhen helping ourselves we donot inadvertently become thebad guys.

The introduction of the newgreen lidded wheelie bins forrecycled waste in the Bellvillearea was an excellent innovati-on. This has given all the localresidents a chance to getinvolved in a useful project.Unfortunately, there alwaysseems to be a downside.

Where I live in La Rochellewe have our normal refuseremoval service on Wednesdayand our recycled material onThursday. It is customary forresidents to put their bins outfirst thing in the morning. Thisis soon followed by a stream ofstrangers who inspect the binsfor useful material. Theirpreference seems to be bottlesand similar saleable objects. Ihave no problem with thesegentlemen collecting thismaterial and disposing of itsomewhere for remuneration. After all we are all endeavou-ring to eke out a living. What Ido feel strongly about is whenthey sit in the park to sort theirsaleable material and leave alltheir discarded mess behind forlocal residents to clean up. Mybiggest concern, however, isthat if this practice escalatesand there is little left in therecycle bins, it would no longerbe profitable for the recyclecompany to continue this verynecessary service.

The homeless problem inBellville is now becomingchronic and if this matter is notseriously attended to we willsoon be having more peopleliving on the streets than in thehouses.

I am disappointed to see howmany shops are opening onChristmas Day and Boxing Day(a day traditionally meant forgiving gifts to employees butinstead, those employees arebeing made to work). Fruit andVeg in Pinehurst as an examp-le. Whether you are Christianor not this is a day normallyspent with family by themajority of South Africans, butnow junior staff are beingexpected to work on these dayswhile senior staff sit at homewith their families. This showsno compassion for staff mem-bers and their personal lives. Itis different if you work inessential services, but a super-market has no need to be open. What happened to the dayswhen stores shut on Sundays? Now shops must be open asoften as possible for as long aspossible, so the guys sitting athome with their families canmake more money. LEWENSKIEKIE

Wanneer jy mense daardiereg wil ontneem, maak jy jouself skuldigaan fundamentalisme. Dit is wanneeremosie alle rasionele denke vernietig.

In a world where most people are so accus-tomed to seeing homeless people that theybarely notice them, two members of the

community took positive action. While walking her dogs, Parklands resi-

dent Reese Harley noticed a homeless mansleeping in the park. That’s not unusual. Butin an area where people often distrust thehomeless so much they don’t even make eyecontact, Reese began talking to him. Hisname is Michael Ntehelang and they gradu-ally got to know each other during her even-ing walks.

Reese provided a few things to make hislife more comfortable, and then she saw anopportunity to change his life completely.

Reese runs a charity organisation calledPawfriends, helping township dogs and cats. She gets them sterilised to prevent unwantedlitters and helps obtain veterinary carewhen needed. She also sometimes workswith the Fallen Angels animal rescue orga-nisation.

Fallen Angels is a haven for forgotten andneglected animals near Melkbosstrand. They were started in February 2014, whenGayl Basson sold her house in Flamingo Vleito buy a piece of land.

Gayl and Shireen Williams are workingvery hard, with limited resources, to createa much-needed shelter for animals in need.Table View and surrounding areas is a vast, sprawling urban area which includes thepoor communities of Dunoon and Joe Slovo, yet there is no SPCA or animal welfare shel-ter in the area. All the organisations work-ing in the area rely on a foster system tohouse animals in need.

Fallen Angels still has no electricity andvery little infrastructure. They needed helpwith building enclosures and kennels, aswell as help in the general care of their ani-mals. Reese saw a person who was down onhis luck and needed a job and a home, so she

spoke to Shireen and suggested that Michaelmight be suited to help them.

Shireen didn’t hesitate. She trustedReese’s judgement and immediately went tofetch Michael and his few belongings.

After three years on the streets, a bad fami-ly situation and a drug history, Michael (22)is now living and working at Fallen Angels.

He has been there for two months and isvery happy. He loves working with the dogsand helping with the cleaning and garden-ing. He is learning new skills every day andis very happy to have a place to stay.

Fallen Angels and Pawfriends havechanged the destiny of many animal’s lives. This time they changed the destiny of a hu-man life.

For more information on Pawfriends, con-tact 082 066 2693, or visit the websitewww.pawfriends.co.za.

Fallen Angels can be contacted on 082 0751159, or visiti www.fallenangels.org.za.

dieselfde naam – vinnig aandag getrek.

skryf graag sy of haar eie musiek vir diewêreld wil sing.

Jacques beskryf symusiek as ’nmeng-

Spur Cape Summer Trail Series kicks off atTygerberg Nature Reserve tonight (Wednes-day).

The series is one of the most popularevents on the South African trail running ca-lendar, with each race in the countrywideseries usually selling out. This year seemsto be no different.

About 800 runners are expected to take ontonight’s challenging course, starting atsunset.

In order to cater for the growing numberof runners, the Spur Trail Series will for thefirst time implement batching. In both thelong and the short course, four batches willset off two minutes apart in order to alleviatecongestion on route and make the experien-ce more enjoyable to both the front runnersas well as the back-enders.

Bernard Rukadza will again be the man tobeat as he returns to defend his summer longcourse championship title. Some of his

strongest competition will come from long-time short course top performers RaydonBalie and Riaan Wildskut, as well as triath-lon veteran Lieuwe Boonstra.

In the ladies field, Marié Wessels will belining up as favourite but this is always awide open race and it remains to be seen whowill give her a run for her money.

The second race in the series, which alsostarts at sunset, will take place at the Con-stantia Greenbelt on Wednesday 28 January, with the third race taking place at LebanonForest in the Elgin Valley on Sunday 1 Fe-bruary.

The Mountain XL race takes place at Sil-vermine Nature Reserve on Saturday 7 Fe-bruary, before the series concludes with thefourth race at Oak Valley in Elgin on Sunday22 February.V Visit www.trailseries.co.za for more informationabout the Spur Trail Series or follow Wildrunner onTwitter @WildrunnerZA for regular updates.

A golf day in aid of the Yarden Children’sEnrichment Centre in Durbanville is due totake place on 12 February at the BellvilleGolf Club.

The centre is set to open this month andthe organisation is in desperate need of do-nations.

The idea for the centre came about whenthe parents of Pierre Cloete, who has a spas-tic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairmentas well as epilepsy, struggled to find a schoolor daycare centre that would be able to ac-commodate him.

For the first eight years of his life, his pa-

rents had to employ a full-time caregiver totake care of him.

After realising there is a need for such aschool in the northern suburbs, Pierre’s pa-rents decided to open one.

The Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church inDurbanville has made five Sunday schoolclass rooms available in which the centrecan operate.

The format of the golf day is a four-ball alli-ance (two scores to count). To enter a four-ball at R2 000, contact Laetitia on 082 876 1763or send an email to [email protected] can also sponsor a hole for R500.

TRANS AGULHAS: INDOMITABLE PAIR BEAT FASTER CLASS

Boaters power to a winANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The twoweremomentarily suspended inthe air.Underneath them the inflatable pow-

er boat roared forward at 80km/h.“Somewhere along the line there is always

a close call,” states the pilot nonchalantly.Neither of the two could afford to fall off

the boat if their aspiration of finishing firstoverall in the Trans Agulhas Challenge wasto be realised. It was day five of the world’s toughest in-

flatable boat race and they were knee-deepin the long haul.Pilot Stefan Lindeque, and co-pilot Tony

Ingram hoped the 131km stretch from Gans-baai to Strand would be calm and unevent-ful, but they also knew that power boatingbeyond the waves was never really “calmand uneventful”.

Limits of enduranceThe twowere thus not surprised when the

waters became choppier than a lumberjackon steroids. For 10kmnearCapeHangklip their endur-

ance was tested to the limits – this after theycompleted 188km on day one, 86km on daytwo, 161km on day three and 111km on dayfour.“The stretch from Gansbaai to Strand is

usually flat, but that day it was really chal-lenging. The pounding water was extremelyrough. After five days, 10km of poundingwas the last thing we wanted,” says TableView’s Lindeque. At that stage of the race they knew they

stood a chance of not only winning theirclass, but also trumping the faster modifiedpowerboat class – something that no-one

has ever achieved before. But if one of them was thrown overboard

then the bid for this remarkable achieve-ment would have to wait till next year. After amoment that seemed to last an eter-

nity, Tony landed on the boat again.A split second later the airborne Stefan al-

so returned to the inflatable Nulandis. That was close...

Home stretchTheir backs were aching, their arms were

numb, but they were not going to throw inthe towel. He adds that day three of the Trans Aghul-

has near Witsand is mentally the toughest.“There is nothing on the beach. It is 70 km

of nothing really!”For Stefan, however, Cape Hangklip was

the pinnacle of perseverance.Once the ocean settled down there, the fi-

nal stretch of the race was a little more bear-able.Since every second counted and the two

could not switch off even for amoment, timeseemed to drag.Theirmuscles and boneswere shaken and

shimmied into mash, but their determina-tion and adrenalin ensured the final pushproceeded without a hitch.Suddenly it was all over. They reached the shore andwere crowned

the overall winners with a time of ninehours and 51 minutes.“Wewere in a different class, and themod-

ified class, which is faster than ours, alwayswin the overall.”This victory will taste sweeter than any of

their previous ones, of which there aremany. The 41-year-old Stefan has been World

Champion on three occasions and has never

looked back in regret for choosing the sportin 1998.“Having grownup inMelkbosstrand, surf-

ing was always a great love of mine. ThenI saw these boats that can actually race in-side the surf line and was drawn to it. I’mjust basically looking for any excuse to getinto the ocean.”

Hours in the gym to strengthen his coremuscles, arms and back has paid off manytimes, and it is clear that Stefan is a longwayfrom hanging up his power boating boots. The friendly rivalry between him and

northern suburbs’ Wimpie Ackermann, aswell as his insatiable desire to master thewaves, will keep him pushing the limits.
