Days later, Bestbier told TygerBurger shehas rescued birds before, but never a pen-guin.“I knew that if a penguin stands there and

just looks and blinks at you then there is nofight left in it,” says Bestbier.“The people there said they phoned Sanc-

cob, but that there was doubt whether theorganisation could come and collect the pen-guin, so I decided to take him there myself.”Happy Feet was then carried to Bestbier’s

house, every now and again peeking at thebusy world through the towel. He saw others staring curiously at Best-

bier and him and then before he knew it hewas placed in a box and put in a bigger box.He might later have deduced that the big-

ger box was a car. Then again, maybe pen-guins are lucky enough not to complicatetheir lives with deductive logic. The drive to Sanccob was quite awkward

for a bird notorious for awkwardness.During the trip the penguin’s name might

just as well have been Flappy Feet.Once the two arrived inTableViewhewas

immediately taken in, weighed, and tho-roughly embraced.“He weighed just one kilogram, which is

much lighter than a bird his age shouldweigh,” says Bestbier.“I was told by Sanccob that the chick sea-

son and the moulting season of the parentsare overlapping now because of global war-ming and human interference. The adultsfatten themselves up, but then there’s nobo-dy looking out for the chicks.”Going to sea is then the most hazardous

time of a fledgling’s life and only about halfof themwho go out for the first time ever re-turn home.Sanccob’s development andmarketing co-

ordinator, Francois Louw, says it is quitecommon during chick season for them to co-me to the rescue of starving and dehydratedpenguins. He continues: “The penguin was very un-

dernourished, but he was very strong none-theless.We suspect hewas abandoned by hisparents. During this three week processwhen the parents replace their plumage

with a brand new set of waterproof feathers, they are unable to hunt for fish and feedtheir young. The chicks that are not yet rea-dy to fledge are abandoned and face starvati-on.”Happy Feet will show the world that he

can survive without the help of his parents.Hewill take to the sea as if his oyster, com-

pletely reinvigorated by the caring Bestbierand Sanccob. One dayhewill have chicks of his ownand

he will tell them of the wide world out thereand about his brush with death. There are people out there who can be

trusted, he will tell them, and then whenthey are big enough to feed themselves, hewill leave.Right now, he is sure he will keep an eye

on them from a distance.Happy Feet’s chicks will never be comple-

tely alone.“A week from now, perhaps even a few ye-

ars, I will think of the penguin I saved,” saysBestbier.“I hope I made a difference.”

Amurder scene in Gie Road, which hasbeen described as “highly sensitive”had Table View and Parklands resi-

dents aghast on social media on Sunday.A 24-year-old woman was found by Table

View police with severe injuries and lyingon the floor.

She was declared dead on the scene, inall probability as a result ofstab wounds to her throat, back of the head and onboth arms.

On Monday morning thepolice, aided by complexpatrols, arrested a 24-year-old man in connection withthe murder when he wasspotted in the area.

The suspect’s motive isstill unknown.

In the first press releaseby the local community po-lice forum (CPF), the eventwas described as a domes-tic incident.

CPF spokesperson, Gemma Rede-lingshuys, says the situation prompted thepolice and more than 19 Table View Neigh-bourhood Watch (TVNW) volunteers intoswift action after the victim’s neighboursnotified the authorities.

The first press release was made publicon TVNW’s Facebook page and ParklandsNeighbourhood Watch (PNW) members re-ceived regular updates on their page.

Access was restricted on the busy roadwhile the police was investigating thescene.

“As this is now currently a crime underinvestigation by the South African Police, and a sensitive one at that, we cannot di-vulge any more information at this stageunless given permission to do so, read thestatement.”

In a matter of hours more than 100 replieson the two Facebook pages emphasised howthe incident moved the community.

A lot of questions were posed around thevalidation of providing the public with

vague information due tothe apparent sensitivity ofthe situation.

A debate that is sure tocontinue with the bur-geoning social media, oneperson reckoned “thosewith integrity, valour andhonour, will as they al-ways do, uphold the codeof ethics”.

Another wrote: “Itwould help so much if infocould be given earlier. Many people stress andworry due to the crimelately in our area. I can un-

derstand the sensitivity of the situation butsome consideration must be given to thepublic with regards to their safety.”

TVNW emphasised they can only relayinformation to the public after the policehas given them permission.

Redelingshuys continued by thankingthe police for their swift action and the var-ious security roleplayers for assisting inthe search of the suspect.

Everyone, including the Community Po-licing Forum, sent their condolences to thefamily of the victim.

Table View Lions Club invites the com-munity to their cheese and wine galaand theatre show to raise funds for the

upgrading of health facilities at the Masik-hululeke Educare Centre in Joe Slovo. The function will take place on 2 Decem-

ber at theMilnerton Playhouse and includesThe Game’s Afoot, a witty Sherlock Holmestype mystery-thriller comedy.Masikhululeke is an encouraging story of

success through perseverance and dedicati-on,whichbegan in 1990whenVivianNuxolaDlabantu, amother of two and a qualified te-acher, took in young children roaming bet-ween shacks and rubbishheaps in JoeSlovo,to keep them safe. As the numbers grew, sheused her ownmoney to buy a rusty, window-less shipping container, a paraffin cookerand pots, and single-handed educated andfed 40 pre-school children.Running her “school” with an admirable

balance of good discipline and fun, populardemand soon outgrew the facilities.Knocking on doors, Vivian received assis-

tance from charities and the City of CapeTown to lease a piece of ground, registeringa pre-school and erect a two-room building. In 2009 a third classroom followed. TodayMasikhululeke teaches 90 children and in-cludes a registered Grade R class. The Table View Lions have supported Vi-

vian andMasikhululeke from the beginningand now plan the construction of the sickroom as required by the education depart-ment.To assist with the funding they invite the

community’s support of the gala.Doors open at 19:00 and the show starts at

20:00.V Tickets cost R110 per person and are available fromCeleste Whyte on 083 401 3322 or info@tableviewlions.za.org.

Requests for medical assistance continue todominate calls to the City of Cape Town’s 107Public Emergency Communication Centre(PECC).

Statistics for the previous festive seasonshowed the highest number of calls to thePECC came from Dunoon in Milnerton.

The call centre was established over 10 ye-ars ago to provide a single point of contactwhere people can report an emergency.

Between July 2013 and September 2014,call centre staff created 401 140 incident re-cords from the more than 780 000 calls recei-ved. Of these, 54% were for medical assistan-ce, ranging from assault to maternity cases

and abdominal pain. Callers requesting as-sistance for crimeand lawenforcement issu-es accounted for the second highest catego-ry. On average, 90% of all calls were answe-red within 10 seconds.

The PECC expects an increase in the num-ber of calls from early December until theend of the festive season.

Unfortunately, there also tends to be an in-crease in prank calls this time of year. “Itmight seem harmless, but those precious se-conds spent on a prank call could mean lifeor death for someone who has to wait in thequeue to speak to an agent,” says city maycomember for safety and security, JP Smith.

Prank calls are no jokeThe launch of the new gardening tunnelson the grounds of Melkbosstrand Count-ry Club will be on Thursday 11 Decemberat 11:00.

Organisers need help to assist in put-ting the new covers over the frames.

ACVV Koeberg would like to start aninspirational community project by me-ans of developing a garden of hope in thetunnels on their grounds in Melkbos-strand.

The idea is to involve volunteers andeager gardeners from the community tohelp develop and nurture the Garden of

Hope.Rina Loubser of ACVV Koeberg says

some time in the future this “Garden ofHope” will be a great benefit to 40 child-ren from disadvantaged homes that aretaken care of on the premises.

Those who want to get involved in thisproject must give their names and con-tact numbers by email [email protected] or SMS 082 067 6722.The garden of hope will be open on selec-ted days for volunteers to either receiveor give inspirations so that they can endup with a wonderful, working project.

When one walks into any storeor shopping centre, it is clearthe festive season is here.Everywhere you look, you seeChristmas trimmings anddecorations and stores adver-tising special offers. The final touches are being

put on end-of-year workfunctions.People are preparing for the

holidays; whether they aregoing away or staying at home,it is obvious that they arelooking forward to a much-needed break from work. But with the festive season

usually comes a spike incrime, debt and accidents. Andwe often forget about the realmeaning of Christmas, as ithas been over-commercialisedover the years. So try to do things a little

differently this year. If you aregoing away, ensure that yourhome is burglar-proof, hire ahouse sitter or ask yourneighbours to keep an eye onyour property. When you sit down for

Christmas lunch or dinnerwith your family, rememberthe value and story behind theday – appreciate the opportuni-ty you have with your lovedones and enjoy every minute ofthe festive break. And if you are travelling be

sure to triple check whetheryour car is in working order,do not drive if you are tootired and always pray fortravelling mercies.Happy festive season!

I wholeheartedly agree withLionel Latigan (“Stats showguns deter criminals”, Tyger-Burger, 5 November).More than 150 years of global

empirical evidence has shownthat gun control is a miserablefailure to control crime, alwaysleads to an escalation in violentcrime and frequently precedesgenocide. The worst genocides of the

previous century all followedgun control and the concomi-tant disarmament of civilians. The saying “if guns are

outlawed only outlaws will ownguns” is as true as ever.Based on the proven fact that

more firearms in civilian handsleads to a decrease in violentcrime and the government’sproven inability to rid our

society of crime, civilianfirearm ownership should beencouraged and promoted on allpossible levels.A grandmother and her

grandchild were robbed atknifepoint in Parow, a womanon her way to Avondale Stationwas robbed at knifepoint and intwo incidents women wererobbed at knifepoint by cow-ards waiting for them in carsalong the road.In one case, two attackers

turned and fled when thevictim merely produced afirearm. Now some stupid fools want

us to believe that by banningthe law-abiding from owningfirearms these type of crimeswould have been prevented? How foolish could one be?Until government gets its act

together to permanently andeffectively rid us of crime bypermanently removing themfrom society, the law-abidingwill increasingly have to armthemselves to protect thatwhich is near and dear to them.

P. VAN WYKParow

Guns needed tofight criminals I refer to the letter “Dodgy tax

in foreign shops” (TygerBurger,5 November). This is something that has

been bothering my husbandand I for some time.We are footing the tax bill for

these “hangers on”.I was chased out of a store in

Brackenfell for insisting on atill slip for my purchase. Our greatest concern is that

when you order a take-awayfrom one of their restaurants, they refuse to give you a slip asproof of purchase.Should you get sick as a

result of the meal, you have norecourse. It is time the authorities did

what they get paid to do:protect the citizens of thisbeautiful country.

paaie vervierdubbel. Mense se haas omby hul vakansiebestemmings uit te kom, knip baie keer hul lewens kort.Jaarliks kom bykans 2 000 sterftes,

hoofsaaklik motorbotsings, in dié tydvoor.

A Dunoon gospel group is gearing up tolaunch their first album in December.

The Christian Love Praise Team willlaunch The Hour has Come at the DunoonResource Community Hall at 14:00 on Sun-day 7 December.

Singer Vincent Mndala said they all metat the Christian Love Ministries churchwhere they decided to take part in the min-istry, and so the team was born earlier thisyear.

“From there we take the gospel to wher-ever we can,” he says. The Hour has Come takes its name from

thebible’s bookof Johnwhich speaks of glo-rifying God, and the group mix differentgenres on the album to take their messageto a wider audience.

“It’s more or less a fusion,” Vincent says, adding there’s even some reggae and R’nBon the album.

Another member, Charles Muthonga, says after they started the group, they dis-covered some of the members could writeand compose their own songs, so they setabout writing for the album.

Each member has had a chance to telltheir own story through song. “Each songhas a meaning,” Charles says.

He says they weren’t sure where to

launch their album, but decided the com-munity they live in would be a good idea.

Charles and Vincent are both fromMala-wi and they want to get involved with localactivities, to help spread their gospel. Theyboth believe it’s with God’s grace they areable to hold on to their beliefs so far fromhome.

Many of the other members are also for-eign. Some have just arrived in the countrywhile others have been in South Africa fortwo to three years.

They travelled to South Africa in searchof opportunities, but Vincent believes peo-ple sometimes wander off the righteouspath when moving away from home andthings they know. “We just say thank youto God, he just gave us the strength,” hesays.

“If you put God first, then God is alwaysthere for you,” he says, explaining how hehasn’t strayed.

For now though, they are making musicand bringing hope to others. “It’s only thegospel than can change the world, nothingelse,” Vincent says.

After their album launch, the group willlook at taking their album to other commu-nities.

V Entrance for the launch costs R20. Email Charlesat [email protected] or call 078 5693600for more information.

Most children think of their school shoes asjust a part of a dreary uniform. They represent 12 years of slog and for

many the first sign of freedom is to relegatethem to a pile of discarded clothes immedi-ately after writing that last matric exam. But imagine if you didn’t have shoes, espe-

cially during our cold winters when youhave to negotiate puddles. In some families children have to share

the same pair of shoes, with siblings takingturns to wear them. This is the reality for many children from

less fortunate backgrounds. Their parentssimply don’t have the money for schoolshoes. Somanyof themgo to school barefoot. You can help. Simply leave your school

shoes at your desk after you have written

your last exam for the year. Please ensureyou ask your parents’ permission to do so.The shoes need to be in usable condition. Tiethe shoes together so the pairs are not lostwhen they are boxed up. People’s Post re-quests that the shoes are boxed and readyfor collection in the new year.V Participating schools donating shoes can contactPeople’s Post at [email protected] with thewords “Walk Away” in the subject field.

In a ground-breaking initiative, medicalstudents of Stellenbosch University cannowundergo part of their training at accre-dited Mediclinic hospitals.

This initiative was announced last Mon-day between Stellenbosch University (SU)and Mediclinic Southern Africa.

The programme was tested as a pilot pro-ject this year at Mediclinic Durbanville, inpartnership with the SU Faculty of Medici-ne and Health Sciences (FMHS).

Fourth and fifth year students completedtheir four-week internal medicine rotati-ons at the hospital, and received clinicaltraining from private sector doctors.

Based on the success of the pilot project, the FMHS and Mediclinic agreed to expandthe programme to three other hospitals inthe Mediclinic group.

They are Mediclinic Cape Gate, Medicli-nic Louis Leipoldt and Mediclinic Panora-ma.

The project was the initiative of Profes-sor Rafique Moosa, executive head of thedepartment of medicine of the FMHS, Pro-fessor Elvis Irusen, chairman of the under-graduate programme in general internalmedicine of the FMHS, and two specialistdoctors with practices at Mediclinic Dur-banville – Dr René Truter, a radiologist, and Dr Rust Theron, an internal medicinespecialist.

“The pilot project was very carefullyplanned and we are pleased it has been re-ceived so positively. We have to give creditto all the stakeholders for being so braveto go on this journey with us. I wouldhighlight two of the success factors as thewonderful support of Mediclinic Durban-ville and the specialists coming on board,”said Moosa.

“It is the first time such a programme forthe formal training of undergraduate stu-dents in the private sector has been succes-sfully implemented,” he said.

The specialists at Mediclinic Durbanvil-le received accreditation by the FMHS totrain students. All participating staff atten-ded a short course to ensure they are equip-ped to transfer the appropriate skills andknowledge to the students.

Health MEC Theuns Botha said it is theprovincial government’s objective to effectlegislative changes to enable the privatesector to become involved on a considera-ble scale in the training of doctors.

“Atpresent it is not possible, becauseme-dical training is public sector driven. It isnot reasonable to expect the private sectorto accept co-responsibility for health care, but prohibit them from participation intraining.

“The private sector is involved in thetraining of nursing staff, and I see no rea-son why this cannot be expanded to medi-cal doctors. The issueof the shortageof doc-tors in South Africa is well-known, as wellas is the dire need to improve public healthcare,” said Botha.

The City of Cape Town plans to provide freeWi-Fi at 61 of its buildings by the end of June2015.

This free service will be provided both insi-de public buildings, via the city’s 102 Smart-Cape Computer facilities, and outside via 61public access hotspots, where people congre-gate and queue for services, a statement said.

These amenities include clinics, admini-stration buildings, traffic departments, firestations and public transport interchanges, said Hayley van der Woude, the city’s mediacoordinator.

She said certain areas will be serviced byDecember, “with the remaining completedby the end of June 2015”.

Buildings to be connected this year includethe Bellville Clinic, Civic Centre in CapeTown, Hillstar Administration Building,Mitchell’s Plain and Nyanga Switching Cen-tres, Parow Community Health Clinic, Plum-stead Administration Building, Robbie Nu-

rock Clinic and Site B Youth Clinic.“Each access point will cost between

R60 000 and R100 000 to install,” she said. The city partnered with service providers

“(Orange) will offer a free 200 MB databundle per day. Internet Solutions will offera free data bundle of 50 MB per day, whileMWEB will provide an uncapped data bundlefor the trial period,” van der Woude said.

Pubs get fresh brew

Alastair Hewitt (Castle Lager general manager), Graeme Smith, former Proteas captain, AndreaQuaye (SAB marketing manager) and Mark Boucher (former Proteas player), tries a new drafttank beer, launched last week.

DESIRÉE RORKE@dezzierorke

Beer lovers from the northern suburbswill have to mosey on down to the citycentre to taste the highly sung new un-

pasteurised Tank Beer.Castle 1895 Tank Beer, said to be draught

beer at its best, was launched by South Afri-can Breweries (SAB) at The Long Street Ca-fe on Wednesday, one of only four pubs tostock the beer - for now.

Previously only available to SAB brewmasters themselves, Brewery Fresh Castle1895 Draught Tank beer is piped directlyfrom Newlands Brewery’s tanks into a dedi-cated “Fresh Beer Truck”, straight to 500Lcopper tanks and in to your glass, all in amatter of hours after it has been brewed.

“Nearly all South African beer is pasteu-rised to afford it a longer shelf life, but du-ring this process some of beer’s lively cha-racteristics can be diminished,” said SABtrade brewer Denis da Silva.

“However, with good hygiene and shortdelivery lead times, pasteurisation is notnecessary, making it the freshest beer you

will ever drink,” he says. The date of when the beer was brewed will

be written on the tap and the tank will haveto be consumed within a few days of filling.

To transport unpasteurised beer underthe strict hygienic conditions, a speciallyengineered brewery beer truck was develo-ped to ensure the beer is kept between twoand four degrees Celsius.

“There is no need for the use of dispensinggas like carbon dioxide, as compressed airis used.

The beer thus has no contact with air un-til it hits your glass,” he said.

Long Street Café is one of the four CapeTown bars to be unveiled as a venue whereCastle 1895 Draught’s Brewery Fresh TankBeer will be served.

In addition to Ferrymans Tavern, Fores-ters Arms and Long Street Cafe, which havealready launched the product, by the end ofNovember Quay Four will also be included.

But is it the most distinctive tasting beeravailable in South Africa, as claimed bySAB?

Smooth it definitely is, with a unique fullflavour - at R38 a pint.

Singer and songwriter, MatthewMolewill be hitting the big screen thisweekend.

Originally from Cape Town, the Johan-nesburg artist’s music has been featuredon the soundtrack for Leading Lady, dueto be released in cinemas on Friday 28 No-vember.Matthew says producers Llewelynn

Greeff andHenkPretorius approached hislabel, Just Music, about using his musicin the film. The two met with him to showhim some of the shots from the film andMatthew says he felt honoured that theythought his songs would work well in themovie.“I never imagined that happening,” he

says adding itwas cool to see how themov-ie and the songs gel.

Big actorsWith a castmade up of some of SouthAf-

rica’s biggest actors, Leading Lady tellsthe story of a British teacherwho convinc-es a South African farmer to help her pre-pare for the role of an Afrikaans war hero-ine in a major film. Along the way she be-comes involved in community life andlearns there’s more to life than films. When he isn’t helping to promote the

film, Matthew is busy working on a followup to his record-breaking debut release. He became the first South African to en-

ter the iTunes album chart at number one, with The Home We Built last year.Between shows, he’s focusingonwriting

for the new album, which he hopes torecord early next year, but Matthew sayshe feels like people are putting a little bitof pressure onhim, after the success ofTheHome We Built.

“I’m just trying to focus on the secondalbumwithout trying too hard.” He’s onceagain teamed up with Matthew Fink, theproducer behind the first album and sayshe’s looking forward to hearing his ideas.“All the stuff he comes up with is amaz-

ing, it’s stuff I would never have thoughtof.”Matthewdescribes his sound as folkmu-

sic with influences of electronic music, agenre he likes himself, and fans can expectto see himexperimentmorewith this com-bination on the new album.

Coastal tourHe is alsoworkingwith a booking agent,

who is making sure he’s very busy witha few coastal tours and New Year’s showslined up for December.Matthew says he’s trying to change his

live shows a little and Cape Town fans canlook forward to hearing some of his newsongs when he performs at the Kirsten-boschSummerSunsetConcert SerieswithTailor in January.

More dynamicHe is also planning on introducing dif-

ferent instruments to his set, to make hisshows more dynamic. He’ll take a break from performing in

February, while he prepares to go into stu-dio in March. For now, fans can “Like” his Facebook

page or follow him on Twitter at @Mat-thewJMole to stay up to date with hisshows and music.V Matthew visited the Orange Couch to chat abouthis music and Leading Lady. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch his performance and interview.

The Swell is the story of two unusual charac-terswhomeet under strange circumstances. The production is collaboration between

two emerging Cape Town-based indepen-dent theatre companies, Horses’ Heads Pro-ductions and Fruitzalad Productions andruns at Alexander Bar Theatre Upstairsfrom Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 December. The four producers of The Swell - Genna

Gardini and Gary Hartley of Horses’ HeadsProductions, and Shaun Acker and ZanneSolomon of Fruitzalad Productions - havecombined their individual theatrical experi-ence to create this innovative piece of thea-tre.

Inspired by magic realism, The Swell tellsthe story of two unusual characters, playedby Zanne Solomon and Shaun Acker, whomeet under strange circumstances, and areforced to confront their ideas of self. Groun-ded in the mythology of fantastical sea crea-tures, The Swell explores ideas of loss andtransformation. The play takes the audienceinto the realm of possibility where identitycan be altered or edited; fantasy can be in-dulged in; and the lines between fact and fic-tion can be distorted.V Tickets cost R100 and are available at www.alexanderbar.co.za/showsupstairs/ or at the door. SAREL BURGER

Eric Osner (5/22) was
