For a moment the blue sky twists upsidedown and is replaced by the depths ofthe ocean.

The ice coldwater embraces the shiveringpaddlers and shudders their very souls.This is the scenario when six people cap-

sized in an OC6 outrigger canoe off the coastof Bloubergstrand on Sunday.Some swim next to the canoe and others

row while sitting shoulder-deep in water.They stare fixedly at the coast, which some-

times seems hundreds of kilometres away.If not for the strong wind blowing them to-

wards the shoreline they might have lost allhope.Meanwhile, one of the crewmembers who

was on a surf ski alongside the OC6 hurriedto shore to get some help.

er of theboat,KarenBramley (35), jokes: “Allwe need now is a shark!”One of the crew quickly lifts his legs out

of the water.

The swells try to intimidate the paddlers,but the freezing water occupies their minds.With the help of the ever reliable National

Sea Rescue Institute of Melkbosstrand, thefavourable wind and their own determina-tion, the six people finally reach the safeshores of Bloubergstrand.TygerBurger talked to Bramley about

their ordeal.“I imported this 45-foot longPolynesian/Hawaiian six-seater outriggercanoe in 2007 with the intention of startingthe sport in South Africa. We went out instrong winds and, flipped about three orfour kilometres from shore. Unfortunately

we didn’t put spray decks on the canoe andwe didn’t right her correctly, so she took inwater. Hours laterwe floated back to shore,”she laughs awkwardly.“That boat savedour lives out there in that

big ocean. This was the first time she has ev-er been out so deep! The stabilizer arm aswell as the traditional rope rigging of the ca-noe kept us floatedwhile the canoe itself wascompletely submerged underwater. Just thenose and the outrigger kept us afloat.”Bramley adds that her boat sustained a

of the water and were all very cold.All showed signs ofmild hypothermia and

were treated on the scene and when they re-quired no further medical attention theywere released.”Bramley had a special word of thanks for

NSRI and her crew members who wentthrough the ordeal with her: “A big thankyou to NSRI who responded so quickly andcame to our aid and also to Brendon Schar-fetter and his crew (all stand up paddleboarders) for putting themselves forward todemo this one of a kind craft.”

This sixseater outrigger canoe capsized off Bloubergstrand on Sunday. Despite the crew membersbeing treated for mild hypothermia, they escaped unharmed after drifting towards the shore inicy cold water.

According to the local police Table View isa high risk area for “bank followings”.

In these incidents criminals follow some-one who has withdrawn a large amountfrom a bank and rob them soon afterwards.

On 27 September R5 000 was stolen froma Parklands resident after he went to AbsaBank at Bayside Mall.

The police suspect that it was a bank fol-

lowing, but the victim (who wishes to re-main anonymous) is still mystified.

He elaborates: “Iwent to the bank towith-draw money for the workers. I never toldthem where I was going. I went in as I al-ways do and left again with the money inmypocket. Someone probably sawmewith-draw that amount at the bank and followedme, but I didn’t see anyone.”

The man arrived at his home.“Suddenly two men approached me and

one pushed a 9mm pistol right against my

head. The other one almost pulledmy pantsdown in order to get the money from insidemy pocket. I have no idea how they knewI had money in my pocket...”

The City of Cape Town has commit-ted to giving Lifesaving WesternProvince (LWP) a grant of R3millionfor the 2013/2014 financial year.

This commitment ensures thatthere will be lifeguards present onmany beaches on weekends and pub-lic holidays from October to March.During the summer and Easterschool holidays there will be life-guards on beaches every day.

Says the city’s mayoral committeemember for community services andspecial projects, Belinda Walker:“LWPhasa longhistory of upholdingthe spirit of lifesaving and I am surethey will continue to ensure that ourbeaches are safe.”

The city’s Sport, Recreation andAmenities Department initiated anagreement with LWP in 2007 andgave a grant of R3 million per yearto expand the good work that this or-ganisation does.

Continues Walker: “We have as-sisted this organisation with equip-ment and uniforms, as well as build-ing clubhouses. I hope that we cancontinue to work together in goodfaith as we have done so in the past.”

The city’s partnership with LWPover the past few years has signifi-cantly reduced instances of drown-ing and resulted in better manage-ment during peak season. During the2012/2013 festive season, beach at-tendance reached a peak of morethan a million people with threedrownings reported.

“Cape Town has a very long coast-line, spanning 307 km, and monitor-ing this coastline is always going tobe a challenge, (it) depends on anumber of different partnershipsand efforts,” concludes Walker.

“Never give up, never give in... We’ll beback!”There, right on the edge of the dark cloud,

is a silver lining.Table View’s Karl Ebel is now more de-

termined than ever to hit that elusive300 km/h.As reported recently in TygerBurger,

Ebel reached 190 km/h at last year’s Haks-keen Pan Speedweek before his car spun.This year Ebel was optimistic he could fi-

nally break the 300 km/h barrier, but at 186km/h theMonstangs differential “gave up”with a huge bang.He elaborates: “The first thought was

that a tyre had blown and we waited in an-ticipation for her veer out of control. All thetime at the ready to try and save it if wecould. She kept straight but the cockpit hada rather disconcerting black smoke start-ing fill it. We fumbled for the switches,started removing belts, window net,grabbed extinguisher and got her to a stop.“After exiting the smoke dissipated and

all that was visible was the tear that the

propshaft had made in the tunnel. The diffhad given up properly with the resultantmangled propshaft and collateral damagemeant that we would have no further at-tempts.”When all things are considered the sim-

ple fact that Ebel and his team even wentto Hakskeen Pan was unlikely in itself.Just two months before this year’s event

they had to build up a car. They got a 327Chevy “power-plant” and had to get a carbody to fit it in.This turned out to be the shell of a 1980

Mustang Fox body hatch.“Two months seemed like an optimistic

endeavour, butwe thoughtwe’d give it a tryanyway,” he says.Working late into the night and getting

up before sunrise paid off and they wereready to go.All the planning ultimately failed, be-

cause they could not even pass 200 km/h.However, they competed and will return

with new ideas for next year’s event.If they can overcome the bumpy desert

floor, get enough grip andmerge dynamismwith aerodynamics then that 300 km/h bar-rier is in their sights.

Jazz Night brings cheer to creche

Little People’s Den in Milnerton benefited from the Little People’s month long charity drive.

One month of charity reached a crescendowith a Jazz Night recently with all the collec-tions and funds heading to the Little People’sDen in Du Noon.

The majority of the children at this crecheare from the surrounding areas. It runs fivedays a week and they are collected earlymorning with the owner’s car and transport-ed back home in the evenings.

So when they heard that all the proceedsobtained from the cover charge at the JazzNight in Long Street, which was organisedby Corne Mouton, everyone was over themoon.

She elaborates: “We also launched a onemonth toy drive for them and weare stickingto the motto ‘every little bit helps’. Insteadof asking for money we asked for items thatcan be found in and around the householdand don’t necessarily have to be purchased.We are still collecting the various goods forthis charity organisation that is in need oftoys, stationery and non-perishable food asthey are growing each day.”

Thehowlingwindmust’ve felt pretty incon-sequential at the annual National Sea Res-cue Institute’s (NSRI) Adventure Day onSaturday.It tried its best to ruin the special occa-

sion for those who went to Koeberg NatureReserve, but it was all for nothing.The day was a roaring success.NSRI Melkbosstrand station command-

er, Rhine Barnes says: “Look, it was verycold, but the feedback was very, very posi-tive. Last week I went to check the routeand the sun and flowers were out and Ithought wow, people are going to have anabsolute ball! Then itwas overcast, but theyenjoyed it nonetheless.”People were treated to a variety of stalls,

exhibitions and television screens to watchthe rugby (more disappointing than theweather), but the main attraction was the4x4 adventure trail through the reserve andon the beach.“Land Cruiser Club members helped

about 150 4x4 drivers navigate the challeng-ing bits. They were also on standby to help

anyone whose vehicle might have brokendown. Thankfully, nothing serious was re-ported. There were a few fender-benders,”he explains.Some might disagree, but seeing this

unique viewof the coastline in a 4x4 is prob-ably worth a few bumps and bruises.Barnes continues: “We are very grateful

to companies like EnerMech who gave usR30 000 and all the exhibitors who also con-tributed. Drainmen paid for the hire of thetent and Wimpy donated all their proceedsmade at the stall to the NSRI.”Barnes says that at this stage they don’t

know how much money was raised, but itlooks promising that they will reach theirtarget of R70 000.The money will apparently be used to

cover operations over the summer period,as well as a training seminar in March.“The important thing is that we intro-

duced people to the amazing Koeberg Na-ture Reserve, which is right on our door-step. You can walk it or ride on your bicy-cle, but you can never really go there inyour 4x4 and tour the whole reserve.”Go to www.tygerburger to view an image

of the Bothasig police shared his knowledgeon this topic at a recent meeting on Friday4 October at the Bothasig police station.

VThe crimemust be reported to the nearestpolice station.

VThe police will open a docket and investi-gate the crime.

VThe docket is then sent to court where theprosecutor will decide if more investigationis needed.

VThe National Prosecutor (NPA) will de-cide whether or not to prosecute.

VThere are three ways of going about thisprocess.

VFirstly, if the NPA decides not to prose-cute it will be because the case is not strongenough because of a lack of evidence.

VIf they decide to prosecute the case goes

to court for charges.VThe prosecutor may also decide to divert

the matter for alternative resolution.VFrom there, in court, the accusedmay ap-

ply to be released on bail while waiting forthe trial to conclude after there is a bail hear-ing.The trial may be postponed numerous

times to collectmore evidence or because theaccused requires a lawyer.

VThe prosecutor will be first to call a wit-ness to present some evidence to prove theaccused is guilty or not guilty.

VThe accused or his/her lawyer may thenalso call a witness to present evidence.

VAfter both sides have been heard, the pre-siding officer decides if the accused is guiltyor not.

VIf they are guilty the accused is sentencedby the presiding officer and may spend timein jail and be released on parole.The accused may also have to pay a fine

or compensation to the clerk of the court orother sentencing options may apply.

Pedestrians are very important to the city.This is the reason they launched their Pedestrian

Safety Campaign on 26 September, to get into gear forthe international Transport Month of October.The drive is in linewith aUnitedNations (UN) initia-

tive, over a decade, to take action to increase road safe-ty.This initiative is called the Decade of Action onRoad

Safety, and 2013 is the year dedicated to pedestrians,the statement said.Last year alone 373 pedestrians died on the city’s

roads, as per a departmental pathology report.“This figure represents 57 % of the total road traffic

fatalities in the city making pedestrians the most vul-

nerable road users by far,” Councillor Brett Herronsaid.“Transport Month in Cape Town provides an op-portunity to become involved in a campaign that canactually save the lives of friends, family and fellow resi-dents and for us to be alert and be safe,” he said.The cityhas formulated aRoadSafety Strategywhich

focuses the start of this massive campaign under sevengoals, it said.This includes assessing the safety at inter-sections, using freeway notice boards to communicatewith road users, educating road users to change theirbehaviour on or besides roads, emphasising safe roaduser behaviour, safe road infrastructure and vehicles,as well as supplying information to loved ones after ac-cidents.

doned and adoptive babies she loves somuch, can have all they need.Ashleigh Devine from Table View, visit-

ed the Rock a Bye Baby Home for infantswho have been dumped, abandoned or giv-en up for adoption, in April.While there, she noticed there was only

one pram for about eight infants. She decid-ed to jump in and help. After a number ofcalls to pram manufacturers, six newprams were couriered to the home.“This was when the penny dropped and

I realised that without trying too hard, Icould actually make a difference. So theidea of Adopt-a-Cot was born.”Ashleigh explains she first learnt the le-

gal implications surrounding such aproject, as it involves babies. Soon afterthough, she was involving her entire circleof friends, family and colleagues to get intoadopting-a-cot-mode.

Financial burden“The most important goal I am trying to

achieve is to assist the facility by takingaway the financial burden of purchasing allthe consumables that the babies require,”she says.“These little angels creep into your heart

and stay there forever. The caretakers sac-rifice everything to ensure that these littlebabies have as much love as they can mus-ter, until they are found a forever home,”she says.The basic idea of the initiative, is to get

groups of people, individuals or corporates,to choose aparticular cot, babyandall, thento adopt or sponsor that cot for a particulartime, Ashleigh explains.The duration of the “adoption” is up to

the sponsor, as well as the content of thesponsorship.The babies vary in age from premature

to approximately eight months old andsome of theirmost basic needs are the obvi-ous – formula, nappies, and such.“Whenababy is adopted, the cot is almost

immediately filled with a newbie that hasarrived,” she says.

AbandonedThe babies are abandoned in bins, open

fields or at hospitals, or they are given upfor adoption at birth.Ashleigh now has a plan to have a special

“baby shower” – theMadHatter’s High TeaCharity Function which will be held at Spi-er Wine Estate on 19 October.On the day they will host 80 ladies, each

ofwhomwill bebringingagift for thehome.“So ultimately we can hand over a nice

supply of various consumables that thehome requires, aswell as educate the ladieson the initiative,” Ashleigh says.Yolande Barnard, manager and house

1993), the fact that the perpetrator and thevictim were lawfully married at the timewhen the intercourse took place, does notconstitute a defence. A husband may there-fore be convicted of rape if he has sexual in-tercourse with his wife without her con-sent,” he said.Mere submission is not consent.A woman who is overpowered by a manandwho on account of her fear, fails to resistthe man, does not consent.The woman must be capable of consent. Awomanwho is asleep, extremely drunk or in-sane is unable to give valid consent. Sexualintercourse with such a woman constitutesrape.A girl below the age of twelve years is pre-sumed to be incapable of consent. To havesexual intercoursewith such a girl thereforeconstitutes rape.Rape Crisis South Africa has been empow-ering women on the road to justice and sup-porting them on their journey to recoverysince 1976. Talent does not look at age when it comesto having what it takes.70-year-old Olaf Roberg from Bothasig

proved this after hewon the Forever YoungMusicCompetitionat the endof September.The competition held at Ferryman’s Tav-

ern in the V&A Waterfront was tough andexhausting, but Roberg pushed through to“wow” the audience.And TygerBurger found out what makes

him tick.“I fell in love with music when I met a

few friends in Carletonville. Hansie Roodtfrom Johannesburg as well as Dirkie Smitand Theo Erasmus from Randburg alongwith myself played in a little band at “DieBoereplaas” every Saturday,” he said.This was in the early 1970s.“When my wife and I moved to Cape

Town I started listening to Elvis, Roy Orbi-son, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and NatKing Cole. I also liked the country songs byWillie Nelson and Glen Campbell,” he add-ed.And from there “it was magic”.“I used to go to bop-sessions as they were

called in those days and we played in hallsand also in churches. But, then for over 40I did not pick up the old guitar for gigs.“I only played at family braais or when

we went camping with friends.

“In July my sister-in-law told me abouta singing talent competition for people overthe age of 40 years. The elimination processtook place over eight weeks, but at first, Iwas very hesitant to enter the competi-tion,” he said.Eventually his children persuaded him

and he entered the competition on the lastday.“I did it just for fun,” he said.This fun then got him into the semi-final

and he was one of six contestants to gothrough to the final round.“I had a few songs to choose from for the

final, but I decided to challenge myself andtry out a new song,” he said.He chose to sing “Blueberry Hill” and

“Bad Moon Rising” by Creedance Clearwa-ter Revival.“I was a little nervous, but once I got on

the stage I was in my element,” he said.Next was the shock of when hewas called

out as the winner of the competition.“It was such a surprise. I won an eight-

hour recording session and a neat micro-phone and headphones,” he added.Even though he hadn’t played for years

his fingers found the beat to the music ofhis guitar. “People of my age should neverbe afraid to try new things. When we listento music from our age, seeing people weknow performing, it reminds us of our pastand the lives we lived from the 50s on-wards,” he said.

Local band, Blackstoneradio, have re-cently released a new music video fortheir song “Sweet Mary Jane”.

The music video, which was shot at Mari-na da Gama, Newlands Forest, YsterplaatAir Field and Kenridge, tells the story ofthree guys who fall for the same girl.

“At the end, the three of us run up to herhouse and when we see her, we realise thatshe’s still in school, and then we all runaway,” explains Dylan Haskin, the band’sdrummer.

“It feels like a sort of Something aboutMary kind of vibe,” adds JC Malengret, theband’s vocalist.

“It’s important to not take the video seri-ously,” bassist, Trevor Edwards points out,adding: “It’s just meant for a laugh.”

The video was shot by Troy Davies of Ret-royspective, who also helped the band byshooting the video for free. “Sweet MaryJane” is the second single off the band’s de-but album, Out of Rock, which also showsa different side of the band who usually de-scribe their music as hard rock.

Clean“It’s clean hard rock, with as little effects

as possible on the voices, on the instru-ments,” JC explains, adding: “It’s only afour piece, no rhythm, so it’s just veryclean.”

“We’re busy exploring the acoustic guitaror classic guitar,” says guitarist FrancoisLouw.

“‘Sweet Mary Jane’ was a song we sort oftried off the cuff, but it happened to work,”he says.

“Since then we haven’t realigned the mu-

sic that we are writing, it’s still rock, butwe are exploring different areas of the um-brella rock term,” Francois explains.

“Previously we didn’t think we could pulloff classic acoustic rock tunes, but we think,we hope, that ‘Sweet Mary Jane’, hasproved it differently,” he says, adding: “Weare definitely trying more ballad type mu-sic, but there will still be some nice Tyson-hitting gems in between.”

“Blackstoneradio started in 2008 in a ga-rage in Bellville, like most good South Afri-can bands,” Francois says, quickly adding:“Like most good South African bands, wedidn’t know what the hell we were doing.”

“We’ve since progressed a lot musically,and we’ve got better looking band mem-bers,” he jokes.

More variety and a more unique sound iswhat JC says fans can expect from the bandin the future.

The fastest flattest race in thewest happenson Sunday with the annual West Coast Ex-press League and funride cycle race.TygerBurger is the media sponsor of the

event.The race will be held at the Sunningdale

Sports Club in Waterville Road.From the venue, there is an 800m “neu-

tral zone” until cyclists turn right onto theWest Coast road. All three routes then headout in a northerly direction towards Melk-bos, Atlantis, andMamre. This is primarilya flat ride.The 65km route follows the West Coast

Road until the Melkbos traffic light, wherea right turn takes cyclists along Melk-bosstrand Road in the direction of the N7.Cyclists then turn left onto the R304 and

race to Atlantis.The 85 km route follows the West Coast

Road past Atlantis and turns right toMamre (up the only hill on the course).Cyclists then pedal through the outskirts

of Mamre towards Atlantis to meet up withthe 65 km route.Both the 85 km and 65 km routes cycle

through the Atlantis business district. Theroute then takes the West Coast Road backthrough Melkbos along the beachfront toBig Bay. The finish is in Cormorant Ave-nue, with a neutral zone back to the venue.The 19 km route turns left off the West

Coast Road at the Melkbos traffic lightwhere it joins the other two routes. The85 km race starts at 06:30, the 65 km at 07:15and the 19 km at 08:00. Cut-off time is 11:00.
