The revamped Blue Downs Golf DrivingRange was launched last Saturday, reach-ing out to future golf fanatics.

“What took place on Saturday was so over-whelming for the community of Blue Downs andEerste River. This partnership has taken us veryfar,” said Subcouncil 21 chairperson, Steven Vu-ba.At a cost of R1,18 million, the construction

which started in late 2009, has since seen numer-ous renovations. This included alterations to theclub house and facility equipment.“People have a misconception that golf is a

sport for the rich, but we want to challenge thatmindset,” said Vuba.TheCity-owned facility ismanaged by theBlue

Downs Golf Club and saw various other golfingorganisations actively involved.

Pilot phase“This will further develop golf as a very re-

spected sport in Blue Downs.“This initiative is only the pilot phase but we

hope to take it further to areas such as Atlantisand Khayelitsha,” Vuba said.Through the city’s Expanded Public Works

Programme, the construction process of thecourse has already created 12 jobs, and it hopesto employ another fourworkers over a six-monthperiod.People need to look back at the legacy which

was left behind and will ultimately open doorsfor others.As a sport, golf started to develop in the Blue

Downs and Eerste River areas in 1994, a smallgroup of keen golfers earmarked a piece of landin order to develop golf and curb crime and drugabuse in the community.“We applaud the group of people who have

started it and we want to keep youngsters moti-vated through what they have started,” said Vu-

ba.The course is viewed as a symbol of hope. It

is aimed at the youth especiallywhoneed to openup and be allowed to play, making use of the re-sources given to them.“With the City of Cape Town that has come on

board, it has allowed us to partnerwith organisa-tions such as the Western Province Golf Union,”Vuba said.

DevelopmentThis will make further partnerships possible

and contribute to the development of the sport.“The community has devoted themselves to

the reconstruction of the course and have accept-ed it in a very positive way,” he said.The Blue Downs Golf Driving Range aims to

build trans-cultural relationships in the commu-nity by introducing golf to the youth, men, wom-en, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.The intention is to teach the youth the values

of sportsmanship and self-discipline and to pro-duce world-class golfers.“The obstacles faced, upon completion have

been minimised with the support of the commu-nity who have provided good leadership,“Golf is a discipline sport and teaches you

hardship. I urge the community to come out andmake use of their skills and learn to persevere,”says Vuba.He also urged that all community leaders, fel-

low councillors and surrounding communitiesmake an effort to be involved and take it uponthemselves to get positively engaged and enablelatent players.Vuba, who has since stated making use of the

course, also appealed to the entire province toembrace their resources and invites schools andcoaches to join in. “We never played golf, butsince the construction of the Blue Downs courseI’ve decided to play as a form of ease, to relax mymind and think out of the box,” he concluded.V More on the opening day on page 14.

Kleinvlei Police is warning railway com-muters about an increase in criminal activi-ty at the Eerste River and Melton Rose rail-way stations.

Whenever I hear people speak about a wom-an in power who really gives back, DawnRoode is always mentioned.

She is not only a community leader andphilanthropist, to many she is a pillar ofstrength. Ward councillor Cynthia Claasensays: “She is a remarkable-once-in-a-life-time-kind-of woman”.

Last Wednesday, at the Subcouncil 21meeting held in Kuils River, Dawn wasawarded with the first-ever certificate ofsubcouncil civic award, an achievement ofnote showing the inspiration she truly is.

“When my name was called, I didn’t knowwhat was going on. I don’t do any of my workfor recognition,” she humbly says.

She has worked in the community for 17years, uplifting, volunteering and trying tomake a change in areas such as Eerste River,Kuils River, Gugulethu and Mitchell’s Plain

She has worked at clinics, health expos,feeding and caring schemes, involved her-self in programmes to help youth at risk, pro-grammes for abused women. She also worksclosely wi8th police at a victim-support vol-unteer.

She started a feeding scheme with nobudget at Sarepta High School in Kuils Riverfour years ago and boastfully says that todaythe school has their own sustainable soupkitchen. She says her community workdates back to her adolescence when she wasstill in Catholic school and was reminded of

the work Mother Theresa did.“I told myself, back then already, I wanted

to be like her. She is my inspiration,” Dawnsays. Councillor Steven Vuba comments:“She managed to make a mark by motivat-ing, inspiring and supporting. We can alllook up to her.”’

Cynthia, who worked with Dawn in 2000in Wesbank at a crisis centre for abusedgirls, says that Dawn never hesitates toreach out a helping hand. “She taught me tokeep my promises to the vulnerable, to makesure you deliver. She is a woman who doesnot see colour or creed,” Cynthia says.

Dawn recalls keeping 500 children off thestreets with a meal every day during the Soc-cer World Cup as one of her most cherishedmoments.

Felicity Barreiro, who nominated Dawnfor this award says that it’s time that some-one with such a heart gets recognition forall she does.

When receiving the reward she says thatshe wishes the community was there to ex-perience it with her. “What I do is for them.I received it with so much passion and dedi-cation and will never stop doing what I do.”

She is currently busy with school pro-grammes at Irista Primary School in KuilsRiver where she helps children cultivatetheir reading skills.

Dawn hopes to inspire people to make achange and help the underprivileged. As shesaid when receiving the reward, “all thecommunity needs is support”.

An Mfuleni couple were convicted of mur-dering a police constable, after burying himin their back yard.The court heard that Barnabas Sentiwe,

killed Constable Monwabisi Mnyombolo inOctober 2009 at the couple’s home.His sentence of 15 yearswas handed down

at Cape Town High Court on Monday.Sentiwe pleaded guilty to murdering the

Cape Town policeman. Sentiwe said he sus-pected that Monwabisi and his wife werehaving an affair.

Sentiwe entered a sentencing and pleaagreement with the State regarding thedeath of Constable Monwabisi in October2009.He admitted that he went to the police-

man’s house on 24 October 2009 and accusedhimof having an affairwith hiswife, Phum-za Veli.Sentiwe refused to testify against hiswife,

Phumza who has been accused as an acces-sory to murder, but was not asked to plead.An argument transpired and Sentiwe fa-

tally stabbed Mnyombolo, after which hecarried the body home and buried it in thebackyard of his home in Mfuleni.In April the following year, he sold the

house and in May of 2011, the new ownersof the house noticed a piece of cloth stickingout of the sand and pulled it which led tothe discovery of a pair of pants and bones.The forensic tests which were done, con-

firmed that the bones were that belongingto Mnyombolo. Sentiwe had intitiallyagreed to a jail term of 20 years.

years was suspended for five years and theremaining seven years was direct imprison-ment. A case of murder and attempted mur-derwas opened after aman andwomanwerefound with multiple stab wounds in a shackin Happy Valley.The man was declared dead on the scene

and the woman was taken to hospital.The court heard that David had forced his

way into the shack and stabbed the twowhilethey were asleep.The woman identified David as the attack-

er and also as her boyfriend with whom she

was living with in Malibu.The suspect was arrested on the day of the

incident and later released on R1 000 bail.He was found guilty on Friday 12 April

2013.The station commander of Mfuleni police,

Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, says: “It needs tobe mentioned that it is the dedication of theinvestigating officer for thoroughly investi-gating the cases and complying with the re-quests of the prosecutors that sees throughto the successful convictions.”It is the same investigating officer that has

also investigated the case of Barnabas Senti-we, who received a 15 year sentence at theCape Town High Court.

Unemployed youth in Bishop Lavis andsurrounding communities can be proud be-cause they will soon have access to theirown Computer Training and Life SkillsAcademy.

This is an initiative of YoungPeo-ple@Work, a group of dedicated and disci-plined volunteers who provide support tothe unemployed to access employment. Theacademy was launched on Saturday withthe support of Pastor Graham Siebritz ofAdonai Life Ministry who provided freetraining and office space and MetropolitanHealth Group (MHG) who sponsored thecomputers.

Frank Julie the volunteer projects direc-tor of YoungPeople@Work is excited aboutthis new development and over the next fewweeks he will be providing intensive train-ing to about 10 volunteers to become compe-tent computer trainers who will providetraining at the academy.

“We also plan to partner with communitylibraries where computer trainers will bedeployed and where basic computer litera-cy will also be offered,” he said. “Life skillstraining in personal development, leader-ship and management, money manage-ment, customer relations, project manage-ment, fundraising, office administration,bookkeeping, networking and professionaljob seeking skills will also be offered as partof a holistic approach to empower unem-ployed youth.”

He also pointed out the organisation hasrecently entered into an agreement with Ca-pacity Employment Agency and will there-fore actively assist unemployed youthtrained at the academy to secure employ-ment. Enrolments will be open from June

2013.Pastor Graham Siebritz was also excited

about the opening of the centre and felt thatin this way the church was playing an ac-tive role in empowering youth in the area.

A passion for music and awill to uplift the communityof Blue Downs.

This is what Ayesha Ajou-haar and her family thriveon. Bringing music to theears of those who have notyet discovered its pleasure.

“We have a lot of childrenin the area who are on drugsand want to keep them awayfrom that,” says Ayesha.

Their hope is to ensurethat the majority of the com-munity, especially theyouth, steer clear of a life ocrime, by providing themwith new skills and opportu-nities. “We give people theopportunity to try some-thing new,” says Ayesha.

Through this, they have started the BlueDowns Brass Band, entertaining audiencesacross the province with their talent.

What encouraged the Ajouhaar’s passionto pursue an interest in music came fromwatching and studying the art on the televi-sion.

Her husband Fuad, was a member of aCape Malay Choir for years, and what hehas learned was put to good use as a meansto start the brass band.

“We don’t want to be a band known forduplicating the sound of the minstrels, wewant to make a name for ourselves,” saysher son, Shiraaz.

The pair regularly take band members on

outings to show there is a different life tothe grinding crime and povery they arefaced with daily.

“Some of the children are interested butsome, not so much. But as soon as they getstarted, they become experienced,” saidFuad. On 27 April 27, the band starts practis-ing with gusto. They are also wanting to at-tract new members.

dent occurred on Tuesday 16 April at Voor-brug Senior Secondary School.A group of girls started fighting with an-

year-old punched the 15-year-old in the face.A friend responded and retaliated by hit-

ting the initial attacker several times overthe head with the buckle of a leather belt.During the scuffle, the 15-year-old learner

produced a knife which was hidden in herschool bag, and stabbed the younger girlseveral times in her chest and leg.She sustained serious injuries to her

right shoulder, upper thigh, and severalopen wounds to her forehead and her chest.Another learner, a 17-year-old, was also

stabbed in the right arm and another 18-year-old sustained a knife wound to herright upper thigh.The injured were rushed to Tygerberg

Hospital and are in a serious condition.Delf police are investigating.

sic, having recorded her own albumand per-forming as a child with her father, sheshares a passion for children.The school hopes to exploring impover-

ished communities and discover untappedmusical talent.“In discovering these talented young ones,

we turn them into successful performersand expose them to the public,” said Cyril.The school is very focused on introducing

Bible knowledge to the children, who reciteverses directly from any passage.Enough to leave anyone’s jaw hanging.Their hope is to build their school into one

of the biggest arts schools in Cape Town.“Somebody once said that it’s good to

dream, but you should keep on dreamingun-til your hard work turns your dream into areality,” says Cyril.The school presents regular concerts and

music shows as a fundraising means in or-der to keep the school running.Cyril finds that the community itself is an

obstacle whereby people have adopted a cer-tain attitude when it comes to assisting withfundraising.“They would hear Percy Sledge is coming

to Cape Town and pay R320 a ticket insteadof watching local talent,” he said.The school will be having a concert at the

Hundreds of people from across the cityare expected to take to the streets nextweek to promote “solidarity” among dag-ga users.

Organised by the National Organisa-tion for the Reform of Matekwane Lawsin South Africa, NORMLZA and IqelaLentsango: The Dagga Party of South Af-rica, the Cape Town Global CannabisMarch on Saturday 4 May will be attend-ed by those who support the legalisationof the plant as an “economic resource forpublic benefit”.

Jeremy Acton, the leader of the DaggaParty which is registered for the 2014 na-tional elections, says participants will becelebrating their diversity, unity andmu-tual respect for each other and the herb.

The party’s newsletter, The Daggab-lad, says daggawas one of themany tradi-tional smokesusedbyAfricansbefore theadvent of the Dutch and British empires.

It was also a source of fibres and theseeds were a valuable source of humannutrition. Dagga was first outlawed inSouth Africa in 1911.

“If one views the police’s dagga prose-cution statistics, it is clear that dagga useis a very common practice and should beregardedas a legitimatehistorical cultur-al practice among citizens which shouldbe respected by narcotics laws and by theBill of Rights of our Constitution,” thenewsletter reads.

“Dagga law enforcement costs SouthAfrica millions of rands to imprison oth-erwise law-abiding and economically ac-

tive people. The legalisation of daggawould allow thepolice tohave theirwork-load lightened, allowing them to dealwith real crimes that have real victims,such as theft,murder, assault and fraud.”

Acton says it is important that legisla-tion legalises dagga and that this is “care-fully crafted tomaximise the benefits andminimise any harms and its control by a‘dagga elite’”.V Protesters will meet at the corner of Keizers­gracht and Chapel streets, Cape Town at 10:00on Saturday 4 May for a “Festive Walk” throughthe city streets.

The achievements of Keenan Michau on theathletics track reads like a dream and youcan’t help wonder what the future holds forthis gifted youngster. Keenan is the Tyger-Burger Sportstar of the Month winner.

The 18-year-old from Bernadino HeightsSecondary School inKraaifontein is a speed-ster of note in the 100 m and 200 m events.

Last year he won the Western Cape boysu-17 100 m and 200 m final. He was also aSouth African youth men 100 m and 200 mfinalist.

In the same year he was also crowned theSA boys’ u-17 100 m champion.

His record this year reads as follows: SAsenior men 4 x 100 m relay champion. SAjunior men 200 m silver medallist.

On provincial level he is theWesternCapeschool boys’ u-19 100 m and 200 m championand the club junior men’s 100 m and 200 mchampion.

His personal best time for the 100 m is10.47 s and the 200 m is 21.31 s.

“It is an honour for me to be the Tyger-Burger Sportstar of the Month. It also feelsgood to be number one, but the reality is thatthe hard work only starts now. You neverknowwho iswaiting for you in thenext race,so I’m working hard to keep my position,”said Keenan.

Western Province sent three teams to theinter-provincial tournament hosted inPretoria by Tennis South Africa (TSA)and South African Schools Tennis (un-der-15 and u-19) whilst Bloemfonteinhosted the u-13s.

The u-13 team had a shaky start as theywere still adjusting to the high tempera-tures and altitude. Adapting quickly,theymanaged towin all their group-stagegames as well as the quarter-finalsagainst Eastern Province and the semi-fi-nal against Gauteng Central.

They went on the beat the hosts in athrilling final 25-23, bringing home thegold.

WP u-15s and u-19s had everything toprove after the u-19s were placed 11th in

last year’s inter-provincial tournament.The u-15 team showed true grit, ending

the tournament as runners-up toGautengCentral after being seeded fifth despiteone of the players collapsing and beinghospitalised due to medical problems.

WP u-19s, however, swept all beforethem on their way to the gold.

In a fantastic team performance theywon 66 out of 72 singles matches. William Jacobs, captain of RiversideRangers, is genuinely confident that theycan go one step better than in 2012.

“We have a balanced team and qualityplayers in every position.Most of all, eve-ryone at the club has a positive mentali-ty,’’ he says.
