In the past 14 months, 31 424 mo-torists were caught speeding onBosmansdam, Plattekloof, Vry-burger and De Grendel roads.
Despite the speed limit on allthese roads being 60km/h, the threebiggest offenders were photo-graphed going 152, 157 and 168km/hrespectively.
These shocking statistics wereacquired and released by ward
councillor James Vos after yet an-other accident on Vryburger Ave-nue in Bothasig.
Last weekend, a person hit a curblate at night, rolled his Honda Bal-lade and destroyed a couple of wallsand a potplant.
He escaped with only minor inju-ries.
The residents who live near a par-ticularly deceiving bend in the roadhave had enough of vehicles rollingpast their houses in the middle ofthe night.
James Gough says it’s the thirdtime that a car has smashedthrough the wall between his andhis neighbour’s property.
“It’s a hell of a sound! Like a planecrash!” he exclaims.
The neighbour, Chris de Koker,likens the noise to “the end of theworld”. “All you hear is the car roll-ing and thudding,” he recalls.
“I usually park where the Hondacame to a standstill, but because mywife and I were leaving for Vreden-burg early on the Saturday morn-
ing, it wasn’t the case”.In May last year another vehicle
rolled onto his property, but thattime it ended up right on top of hisuninsured Golf.
One of his daughters lives just afew metres away from this parkingspot and De Koker fears for her life.
“We’ve lived here for 20 years,James has been here for 18 years,and it’s always been a problem.Nothing will be done about it,” hecontinues.
Vos is trying to get traffic lights
installed just before the bend in theroad, on the corner of Vryburgerand Adam Tas Street, but apparent-ly the traffic coming from the latterisn’t of a high enough volume.
Vos is also hesitant to have a ze-bra crossing over Vryburger Ave-nue, since it gives pedestrians falseconfidence to cross without reallylooking.
It is also apparently forbidden tobuild speed humps on the road, asper the national Road Traffic Act.

ThePeopleLivingWithCancer (PLWC)Can-cer Buddies organisation has been ear-marked as one of the beneficiaries in thespectacular Want ons Kan/’Cause we Can!concert.
PLWC Cancer Buddies was established in2000 by Linda Greeff and Carl Liebenberg,both of whom are cancer survivors.
The organisation develops volunteercounselling guidelines and support thathelps people who have been diagnosed withcancer.
“After a person has been diagnosed withcancer, that is when he or she needs all thesupport they can get,” says Greef.
“The aim is to provide support to newlydiagnosed cancer patients when treatmentstarts, to assist with the initial adjustmentto the process. This service ensures that acancer patient and their caregivers have ac-cess to support services near their treatmentunits. We need them to be cancer survivorsand not cancer victims.”
The organisation offers a buddy supportnetwork where cancer patients can interactwith and receive advice and support fromcancer survivors who have a similar profile,disease and treatment protocol.
She says the importance of support whilelearning to live with cancer is fundamentalto developing a true cancer survivor ap-
proach.“Dealing with each chapter of survival in-
volves more than medical management – itrequires attention to your psychological, so-cial, emotional, spiritual, working and prac-tical needs as well.
“Developing a patient active approachwhich empowers the patient to take somecontrol over the process and which encour-ages them to see healing as more that justphysical, is an important outcome the can-cer buddies tries to achieve.”
Greef says talking with someone who hassurvived cancer and has regained their lifeoffers hope and a sense of empowerment.
“Through empowerment comes a positiveattitude, which has a profound effect on theoutcome of the treatment.”
PLWC has branches in the Western Cape,Eastern Cape, Gauteng and in Mpumalanga.
Currently they are trying to set up supportgroups in all the small communities such asDelft and Bishop Lavis.
Greef says a challenge they face is fundingwhich is always a problem.
“We are in need of funding and that’s whywe are so grateful to be a beneficiary of the’Cause we Can! concert. We need to rendera service to people. We are trying to appointtwo social workers to assist the people whoneed cancer support in this crucial time.”

about the speedjunkies in Bothasig andsurrounds, hence the request for statisticsfrom the traffic department.
“The increase in accidents taking placein the suburb resulting in the damage toresidential property as well as the loss oflife or serious injuries as a result of theseaccidents are shocking,” he intimates.
“It is clear to me that a very disturbingand complete disregard for traffic and mu-nicipal by-laws exists in our city. On a dai-ly basis one sees flagrant breaches of trafficregulations, unauthorised building activi-ties, and contravention of municipal polici-es and by-laws.
“The fact of the matter is that all moto-rists should adhere to the basic rules of theroad. It is unacceptable in a civilised socie-ty that there still people who wilfully igno-re traffic regulations.”
The statistics are very comprehensiveand fascinating to dissect.
From January this year to end of March,651 speeding cases were recorded in Vry-burger Avenue with the highest being 103km/h.
On Bosmansdam Road, 3 029 cases wererecorded during the same period, the hig-hest being 127 km/h.
On Plattekloof Road, 1 101 cases were re-corded with 143 km/h the highest and onDe Grendel Avenue, 1 049 cases were recor-ded with 119 km/h the highest.
According to Vos he continuously eng-age the traffic chief about the programmeof action and to motivate the case for incre-ased traffic enforcement with operationalplans to this effect.
He concludes: “The reality is that trafficservices across the board must be beefedup. I have again written to the city’s safetyand security department requesting additi-onal funding for the training and deploy-ment of more traffic enforcers, as well asan operational strategy to deal with trafficviolations in residential areas.”

Praatjie oor plante in Tygerberg by blommeklub
The Lucky Lucy Foundation, a non-profit or-ganisation – will be having a fundraiserdance on Saturday 21 April.
The foundation is a pro-life, pro-quality oflife organisation that aims to relieve theplight of severely neglected and abused town-ship and street animals.
The dance will take place at the Ossie Ther-on Hall at Brackenfell High School from 19:00and tickets cost R60.

Dance for the neglected

If the frequency of illegal dumping isanything to go by, then the disease ofdisrespect is slowly rotting away theinsides of society.
TygerBurger responded to yet anotherillegal dumping complaint of a Ruyter-wacht resident last week and, in doing so,noticed piles of garbage littering thestreets along the way.
The latest complaint touched on a fami-liar subject – people are too lazy to driveto the landfill site and instead, dumptheir garbage on the first open piece ofproperty.
In this case, the open land in BainStreet is across the road from the De Ja-gers’ house.
Says Chris de Jager: “People have beendumping on that land for a few years now.We can never catch them in the act!”
The rubbishblowsacross the street andDe Jager picks it up as often as he can,but it’s enough to upset him to no end.
The stench hanging in the air is alsoever-present.
“We don’t even invite our friends overanymore. It’s embarrassing! How willthese dumpers feel if we unload our gar-
bage in front of their houses?”While walking through the garbage,
TygerBurger saw old carpets, ceramiccups and letters among the heaps of filth.
A few of the letters had the same nameand address on them – a name De Jagerclaims he came across before.
The house is located about four kilome-ters away, andupon investigation, theho-me owner said the woman whom the let-ters were addressed to no longer lives the-re.
He insisted that a bergiemust’ve stolentheir garbage and dumped it in BainStreet.
The anonymous resident also assuredthe newspaper that he has a major issuewith people dumping next to the road andin open land.
The next day it was discovered that theperson whom the letters were addressedto does indeed live at that residence.
The “suspect” does, however, maintainthat a homeless person must’ve carriedthe letters, along with the garbage, fourkilometers away to dump it in BainStreet.
Every resident, ward councillor andbergie would acknowledge that illegaldumping is wrong, yet these incidentsseem to be getting out of hand.

Duisende mense het indie laaste paar jaar hul werk verloor en daar-deur in ’n finansiële verknorsing beland.Met die resessie het mense hul huise, motorsen besittings verloor. Dan isdaar nog baie ander soorte el-lendes wat rondom ons gebeur.
Wie moet hierdie mense by-staan en help? Sal ons dit aandie politieke en kerklike leiersoorlaat? Natuurlik het hulle ’nwaardevolle bydrae te lewer.Dit is egter ook juis politieke engodsdienstige ideologieë enstrukture wat van die grootsteellende, vervolging en oorloë indie geskiedenis van die wêreldveroorsaak het.
Nee, ons kan dit nie slegs aanhierdie instansies toevertrounie. Ek en jy het ook ’n verant-woordelikheid om ’n verskil te maak.
Ek is ’n aanhanger van Kenny Rogers semusiek. Het jy al sy liedjie gehoor: “Someoneis Me”? Dit handel oor die agteruitgang vandie woonbuurt en die stad, die vullis in diestrate, die graffiti teen die mure, oor die sui-nigheid en onsimpatieke houding van dieryk mense. En dan vra die liedjie wie moetdie goed regmaak wat verkeerd is. En Kennysing die laaste vers so:

Jy is daardie iemand wat moet regmaak.In jou gesin, in jou woonbuurt, by die werk.Van die volgende dinge is redes en versko-nings wat mense aanvoer waarom hulle nie’n verskil in die wêreld kan maak nie:
. Mense dink hulle is nie goed genoeg nie.Ek is nie die predikant nie, of ek is nie slim
of belangrik genoeg nie. Non-sens. Staan op en steek jou handuit en maak ’n verskil.
. Sommige mense sê dat hullenie finansieel sterkgenoeg is omte help nie. Hulle sukkel self omte oorleef. Hulp gaan egter nienet om geld nie. Jy kan van joutyd en energie en ander vaardig-hede gee om behoeftiges te help.
. Dan is daar diegene so besigmet hulle eie lewe dat hulle nietyd vir ander mense het nie.Daar is net te veel dinge op hulagenda. Televisie. Rugby. Sport.Vakansie. Tuinmaak. Lees. Ver-maak. Los eerder die versko-
nings en maak tyd vir jou naaste.. Bang vir kritiek. Wat sal die mense sê?
Moenie jou steur aan praatjies van mensenie. Spring uit en gaan tot aksie oor.
In ons land is daar wonderlike mense metruim harte wat ’n onbaatsugtige naastedienslewer. Dit is mense wat ons nie oor die radiohoor, of op televisie sien, of van wie ons indie koerante lees nie. Dit is mense wat op hulstil en beskeie manier hul hand uitsteek nahulle in nood en ellende – soos engele op aar-de. Staan op en sluit aan by hierdie groep.Moenie langer wag nie. Jy is die iemand watdie verskil kan maak.

The South African Social SecurityAgency (Sassa) seems to be blamingpensioners, parents and caregiversfor the recent mayhem in the pay-outof social grants.
Both the minister of social develop-ment Bathabile Dlamini and Sassa CEOVirginia Petersen have repeatedly givenassurances that the re-registration of be-neficiaries necessitated by the change-over to the Cash Paymaster Systemwould not disrupt grant payments.
Sassa now admits that “several systemglitches” delayed the payment of grantssince 2 April. In a full-page advertisementin the Business Report on Sunday, Sassablames these “glitches” on beneficiarieswho “panicked” and put “pressure on thesystem”.
“This blame-shifting is unacceptable,”said Mike Waters, DA shadow minister ofsocial development in a statement lastweek.
“The grants system is a national com-petency managed by Sassa, which falls
under the department of social develop-ment. Sassa and the department therefo-re have joint responsibility to ensure thatgrants are paid out timeously during there-registration process.”
According to him the advertisementswould have cost Sassa at least R213 000 –or the equivalent of 177 old age grants or803 child support grants.
“We have previously asked the chair-person of the portfolio committee on soci-al development to call both minister Dla-mini and Ms Petersen to appear beforethe committee to give feedback on the ma-nagement of the re-registration processand the vetting of Sassa officials involvedin grant pay-outs. When this invitation isaccepted, we will question Sassa on thereasoning behind the advertising cam-paign and the steps taken to address the‘glitches’ in the system.
“For many, social grants are their mainlivelihood. It is imperative that mecha-nisms are put in place to ensure a smoothtransition to the new pay-out system,” hesaid.

The City of Cape Town reachedout to seniors recently and,while they were at it, they cele-brated Edgemead’s 40th anniver-sary.
The Edgemead’s Senior Partywas attended by ward councillorJames Vos, who used the opportuni-ty to emphasise what an importantrole the elderly play in society.
“I’m privileged, because I get to
spend a day like today with peopleI regard as part of my own extendedfamily. That’s a real privilege andone I’d never take for granted. Thisis one of the most important eventsof the year. It is our annual celebra-tion of the senior members of ourcommunity.
“Throughout the year each of youhas helped our families and yourcommunity. For you it’s been aboutworking with and helping friends
and today your community takesthe opportunity to say ‘thank you’for what you’ve done,” said Vos.
The seniors recreation pro-gramme was held at EdgemeadHall. This function follows a simi-lar event held in Bothasig lastmonth and it is planned to hostthese seniors’ recreation outreach-es annually in the vicinity.
Vos, however, decided to also cel-ebrate Edgemead’s anniversary.
“Today we celebrate 40 years ofdevelopment and growth in Edge-mead. We celebrate a working andactive town with exceptional andincomparable amenities and sport-ing facilities, schools and a library,churches and creches, parks andrecreational facilities, a post office,town hall and commercial nodes,roads and infrastructure and, mostimportantly, we celebrate the ex-traordinary and remarkable citi-
zens of Edgemead,” he explained.. On Wednesday 18 April, the
Edgemead Residents’ Associationwill be celebrating the anniversaryat 19:30 in the Community Centre.There will be a short AGM followedby recollections of early Edgemeadas related by some of the first home-owners, a little slide show of pic-tures of “then and now” and peopleof interest in the suburb. Students of Prestige Academy excelled dur-ing their ever-popular Easter egg drive bybreaking the previous record by collectinga total of 3 000 Easter eggs.
This drive has become a tradition at theacademy and students go the extra mile toreach the set target.
Liezl Meyer, community outreach co-or-dinator, says involvement in outreachevents means much more.
“Our students did more than just collect-ing Easter eggs; they donated their time aswell.
“Over a matter of three days, students,staff and management took to the streets todemonstrate their commitment to caringfor others in the Easter spirit,” she said.
Part of the vision for this year is to reachout to various non-profit institutions. East-er eggs were donated to Boucher SafeHouse, Alta Du Toit, Ruyterwacht SeniorCentre, Waveren Primary School, Carel DuToit, Straatwerk and the cancer, heart, sur-gery and kidney units at Tygerberg Hospi-tal.
Participants said these events add an ele-ment of reality to the outreach project, be-cause it goes beyond mere lip service.
One student, Kristyn Rohm, SRC mem-ber, said this was an overwhelming andhumbling experience, one which she won’thesitate to do again.
“This experience touched my heart,”said the hostel’s Ujama Swart.

Goodwood’s JG Meiring High School re-cently travelled all the way to Melk-bosstrand to get their hands dirty andclean the beach.
Some 47 refuse bags filled with rubbishmeant the day was a huge success.
The cleanup was organised by the highschool’s very own eco-club known as theLeague of Environmentally Aware Fanatics(Leaf).
The Youth Safety Ambassadors Pro-gramme initiative received a helping handfrom Eerstesteen Environmental Education
Centre, which informed them of a suitablelocation and provided the resources.
Later in the day the 47 refuse bags werefilled with rubbish ranging from plastic bot-tles to old clothes, all of which were scatteredaround a two kilometre stretch of beach.
Surveys of what rubbish were collectedwere also completed so they could be sent toan international beach cleanup organisa-tion to help with research.
Leaf aims to make the cleanup a traditionat JG Meiring High and expand the projectevery time, thereby following their motto ofcreating awareness and inspiring action.

When would allarrive alive?At last count, almost 200 people had beenkilled on South African roads over theEaster weekend, 13 of them in the WesternCape.
Although this figure is down comparedto 2011, this in no way minimises the im-pact from loss of lives.
Easter is a time of worship for Christi-ans celebrating the resurrection of Jesus,it is a joyous time to spend with family andfriends; not intended for mourning.
On 3 April, Western Cape minister oftransport and public works Robin Carlisleexpressed his hope for no fatalities in theprovince on the roads at Easter. This wasnot to be.
While the authorities have done every-thing in their power – from Operation Exo-dus to the Arrive Alive Road Safety Cam-paign – to keep South Africans safe on theroads, the same cannot be said of the moto-rists.
The primary and ultimate responsibili-ty rests with the person entrusted behindthe wheel. Every driver is well aware ofthe murderous implications of drivingdrunk, speeding and driving unroadwort-hy vehicles, yet many, in the foolhardy be-lief that “it will never happen to me”, risktheir lives, that of their passengers and in-nocent fellow motorists.
Next Easter, can we turn Carlisle’s hopeof zero road fatalities into a reality?

Pic proves pollutionis not ‘normal’With regards to TygerBurger’s 4 April articleentitled “Pollution within limits?” in relati-on to the Chevron Refinery:
I took this picture on Monday, 2 April, onmy way to gym in Table View along KoebergRoad while I sat in traffic. Surely the assu-rances they are giving us with regards to airpollution being within normal limits is inac-curate!
The thick, black smoke, which resembledoil burning, billowed from the smoke stackand carried on for at least five minutes.
The smoke continuously formed a blackcloud. Because I was in traffic I was able tosee firsthand how the wind took the smokeas I moved along Koeberg Road, down intoBlaauwberg Road and then into Gie Road. Itmoved over the neighbourhoods of TableView and Parklands and then dispersedright over the homes. So according to Che-vron this is perfectly normal and within li-mits. Surely not!
Another thing that always confuses me: I
work in Montague Gardens and live in Dur-banville, so I drive past the refinery on Plat-tekloof Road every day.
I noticed the air pollution monitor units onoccasions – always in the parking lot in therefinery or along the perimeter fence closeto or in the refinery itself. Surely these unitsshould be located in the suburbs of TableView and Parklands and Montague Gardenssurrounding the refinery monitoring the im-pact of their pollution?
I can without a doubt say one thing, andthis is just from my personal observationsonly as a private citizen. Over the past 12 ye-ars of driving to work and home and past therefinery every day, twice a day, I have seena marked increase in the amount of smoke/pollution that is being emitted from the refi-nery into the air. As of late it’s almost as ifthere is a permanent haze around the areaof the refinery.

I have lived on Blaauwberg Road, TableView for the past five years. A month aftermoving into Table View in March 2007, Iwrote an article complaining about thesmell in the area and the symptoms I wasexperiencing. At the time I was not awarethat this was from Chevron. My eyeswouldburnandwater andmychestwouldclose up for no reason at all. Up until thatpoint, I had never suffered from asthmaor a bad chest. I was 44 years of age at thetime. At the time, I was advised that Che-vron would be in contact with me. Theynever contacted me. I went through a fewverybadmonthshealthwise after that andeventually, I was diagnosed with asthma.
What I fail to understand is that whenI am out of the area my chest is fine, butwhen back at home, my chest closes upand I also now suffer with hayfever.
Upon arriving home at 22:40 last night(3 April), there was once again the mosthorrific, strong sulphur type smell in theair. This is not the first time we have expe-rienced this. This occurrence is pretty re-gular and mostly late at night. I think it’stime for Chevron to be honest with the pu-blic as to how much of this rubbish theyare spewing into the air on a regular basisand what they intend doing to clean uptheir act.
Once again, I have to point out the obvi-ous and that is, that this affects the elder-ly, babies, people with respiratory pro-blems and causes permanent respiratoryproblems in otherwise healthy people.

I don’t feel sorry for the young men withtheir excessively loud car music systems,the fact that they don’t have the personali-ty to attract attention any other way orthat they face a future of deafness.
I feel sorry for those people on night du-ty who struggle to sleep during the day,the nurses, doctors, police officers and allthe others whose reflexes may be a littleslower because some idiot’s inconsidera-tion has not allowed them to get enoughsleep. I also wonder, as there is a by-lawto control this noise, why the police arenot more reactive?

In September en Oktober 2011 het ons jou gevra hoe jy die plan vir Kaapstad vir die volgende vyf jaar sou wou sien lyk. Ons het na jou geluister en bied nou vir jou ‘n oorsig van jou nuwe konsep-vyfjaarplan(geïntegreerde ontwikkelingsplan [(GOP]).
Die GOP is die plan waarop die Stad se konsepbegroting en bedrywighede oor die volgende vyf jaar geskoei sal wees. Ons is trots daarop dat die GOP meer as ‘n miljoen mense in ‘n omvattendeopenbaredeelnameproses bereik het. Dit is tekenend daarvan dat dit ‘n plan is wat aan al die mense van Kaapstad behoort. Die Stad luister wanneer die mense hul sê sê.
Die plan is vir verwysingsdoeleindes in vyf fokusgebiede (of pilare) verdeel: die geleentheidstad, die veilige stad, die omgeestad, die inklusiewe stad en die goed bestuurde stad. Saam bied dit ‘n holistieseplan vir die Stad.

After a recent name and line-up change,Silent Side are gearing up to launch theirdebut album, Unbroken, on Saturday.
Music fans may know the band as Skye-clad, the name they were using until theydiscovered a European band with the samename.
When TygerBurger interviewed the bandin 2009, they had just enjoyed considerablesuccess on the Mxit Music playlist.
Since then, Bonita van Wyk (vocals andacoustic), Ray Schoeman (rhythm guitar)and Paul Anagnostakis (lead guitar) havebeen working with their new drummer, MattCatto and new bassist, Darion Garisch.
They have been teaching new memberstheir songs, and of course, recording their al-bum.
“The recording process has been obnox-iously long,” Ray says, adding: “We wantedit to be perfect.”
By obnoxiously long, Ray means that theytook a year and a half to record Unbroken,but conflicting work schedules have alsomade it a little more difficult to record the
album in a normal time-frame.Unbroken was recorded at HeyPapaLeg-
end Studios and was produced by Ross andMyles McDonald and Hannes Burger.
Paul says now that they have the album,they can start sending it off to radio stationsand use it for marketing the band.
Bonita refers to silent Side’s music as“emotional, melodic, rock”.
“It sounds weird, but it’s because thereisn’t a genre for it yet,” Ray says, beforequickly pointing out: “Please not that we arenot emo.”
Although they recorded an EP, Listen, un-der their old name, Unbroken is Silent Side’sfirst full-length album.
They will be launching it at Banned RockLounge in Table View on Saturday. GerhardBurger, the band’s ex-drummer will be doingan opening set, before Chris Tait and Row-land Gutsche warm the stage.

A young local motocross rider isintent on keeping his hopes of anational title alive when he com-petes in his own backyard laterthis month.
Nine-year-old Justin Sangster on-ce again proved he is the man to be-at by setting a new South Africanlap record at the second round ofthe Full Throttle/WOMZA nationalmotocross championship that washeld in Bloemfontein on 24 March.
Sangster won both his heats atthe Shavron motocross track secu-ring him the top podium place. Thevictory provides him with a reas-onable cushion and a 13-point leadahead of the Cape Town nationalwhich takes place on 28 April at theMelkbos motocross track.
The young man from Bergvlietwill certainly be hard to beat on hishome track which is sandy andsuits his riding style.
At the Bloemfontein event the Ca-pe Town riders in the 50cc groupproved their worth with four ridersfinishing in the top ten. Chris Eras-mus finished fifth, Calum Marriottseventh and Oliver Glover ninth.
The only other rider to achieve atop five position was Anthony Ray-nard who earned a respectable fifthplace in the MX2 250cc class. Ray-nard, who set the fastest lap time inpractise, could just not withstandthe onslaught of the current SAchampion Kerim Fitzgerald whowon the class quite comfortably.
