Drinkingwater stillinvestigatedANNETTE THERON

The Riviersonderend Ratepayers Associa-tion received a letter from the South Afri-can Human Right Commission (SAHRC),dated 28May, that states that theyarebusyattending to a complaint about the qualityof the local drinking water. The HRC’s re-sponse will follow in due course. The quality of drinking water in Rivier-

sonderend came under the spotlight inMarch after the HRC received complaintsfrom concerned ratepayers. Clive Sanden-bergh, chairperson of the ratepayers asso-ciation, said the complaint was lodged ontherecommendationof JaapKelder, chair-person of the National Ratepayers Union.According to Sandenbergh the com-

plaint is based on allegations that sewagespills from Greyton and animal manurefrom dairy farms upstream from Rivier-sonderend polluted the Sonderend Riverfrom which water is pumped for purifica-tion into drinking water.Anofficial fromHRCvisited the townon

18 March to speak to residents and also toget the Water Board to test the water inde-pendently. Melanie Lue Dugmore, provin-cial manager of the HRC in the WesternCape, confirmed the HRC’s investigationand the site inspectionwhichwasheld ear-lier this year. “Thematter is still under in-vestigation by the commission and there-fore it is not at liberty to provide detailedreports on ongoing investigations to themedia,asthismaycompromiseongoingin-vestigations.”

The state rejected a guiltyplea in the Anene Booysenrape andmurder case aftercharges were put to Johan-nes Kana, the accused, onMonday 3 June.National Prosecuting

Authority (NPA) spokes-person Eric Ntabazalilasaid after the charges wereput to Kana, he pleadedguilty to murder.“His lawyer read out a

statement which outlinedwhat happened on thenight Anene Booysen wasraped andmurdered,”Nta-bazalila said.He added that, as the

state, they rejected thepleaof guilty, “because our

facts do not correspondwith what was in his state-ment. His statement doesnot give a full version ofwhat transpired at thescene of the crime.”Ntabazalila said that

presently there are no oth-er suspects.“Kana is the only ac-

cused person in this case. However, if new informa-tion comes out during thetrial, the state and the po-lice will not ignore it.”The case has been post-

poned to 9 July for the Di-rector of Public Prosecu-tions in the Western Cape,Advocate Rodney de Kock,to decide whether the casewould be tried in the re-gional or high court.

Winelands toll projecton hold by order of courtThe South African National RoadsAgency Limited (Sanral) cannot, forthe moment, take any steps towardsimplementing plans for the N1/N2Winelands Toll Highway Project.Upon application by the City of

Cape Town, the Western Cape HighCourt recently granted an interdictthat compells Sanral to pause anysuch plans.Councillor Brett Herron, commit-

tee member for transport, roads andstormwater in the City of Cape Town, said the municipality also argued foran order that Sanral be compelled toprovide a number of documentswhich formed part of Sanral’s deci-sion-making process, but which theyhave refused to provide to date. The City was successful in this ap-

plication too.Should Sanral be successful in the

implementation of the toll road, mo-torists using the N2 would pay tollfees at three toll plazas between theR300 interchange in Bellville and Bot

River. In the 9 April issue of the Gazette,

AldermanChrisPunt,executivemay-or of Theewaterskloof Municipality, expressed the concern of many localresidentswho fear the impact toll pla-zasbetweenCapeTownandBotRivermight have on the local economy.Herron said the court has granted

the City’s application for an interdictpending the final determination ofthe City’s previous court applicationfor a review of the toll project. “TheCity’s people and its economy simplycannot be burdened by unnecessarytoll roads. Sanral’s decision is onethat affects us all, but that will havea particularly profound effect on thepoorest and most vulnerable groupsthat call Cape Town home.”

Gee 'n kort oorsig van die besigheid.

OK Value is deel van die Shoprite

Checkers groep.

Ons was

albei voorheen betrokke by Pick n Pay,

toe by Spar.

Hoekom moet iemand julle besigheid kies bo jul

mededingers?

ook jou drank by ons nuwe Top

Liquormarket wat vandag sy deure

oopmaak.

Waarom Caledon?

Caledon, before and after the mallCaledon, before and after the mallCaledon will never be the same again. Itshistorywill, fromnowonwards, be dividedinto two distinct epochs, namely BVM andAVM. Before (the) Victoria Mall and After(the) Victoria Mall. By Friday evening 31May 2013, the question on everyone’s lipswas, “Was jy al by die nuwe mall?”By the Saturday probably everyone who

could crawl, walk, cycle or drive had beento the new mall. On 1 June it was rainingheavily but there were hordes of peopleswarming around, most of them doingshopping, rushing for the “specials”;manywerethereoutofsheercuriosityandexcite-ment. There was something new, some-thingbig, happening inourvillage andeve-ryone wanted to be a part of it.Onewell-known“bergie”was apparently

under the impression that food was beinggiven away for free and simply walked outof the main supermarket (or tried to) witha Styrofoam container filled with chicken,French fries and other goodies. He had ap-parently ordered the food and then tried, surreptitiously, to saunter out of the shopwithout paying. Alas, he was apprehendedat the door and escorted back inside theshop. That tale will be told and retold foryears to comeandbecomepart of local folk-lore. “Jaouens,daidagtoerieniewemoloop-maak toe wil ou **** mos somma ytstap met’n bak kos. Yoh!! Ek het dikwels met ’n sekere man ge-praat wat beweer hy is ’n ateïs, en elke keerwanneer ons gesels, het hy gesê hy soek na diewaarheid. Ten spyte van sy ateïstiese oortui-gings het sy gees uitgeroep: “Ek soek na diewaarheid!”In elke mens is daar ’n uitroep na jou Skep-

Pondering the complexity and mystery of timeAllbeings–ourselves included–haveasenseof time, appropriate to its circumstances. When (and if) one nears three-score-and-ten,onestarts “feelingyourage”.Theaveragecator dog, living to twelve or fifteen, shows thesigns–thosesubtlechangesinbehaviour, thelittle oddities in habit and diet, the slowingdown, the growing discomfort, the final de-crepitude and death. The main difference between us and them

is the time scale, and here we encounter ametaphysical conundrum: do cats or dogsfeel that their lives have been painfully andexcessively brief, much briefer than those ofus humanswithwhom they are so closely as-sociated?What about themayfly, that spends99% of its life as a larva and only emergesfor one final hectic day in which it reachesmaturity, mates and experiences the onset ofparenthood? Does it feel cheated, or does itgo with the same sense of having lived a fulland happy life, just as we do?What about theGalapagos turtles, that live

(if basking in the sun and occasionally am-

bling around after a blade of grass can becalled such) for three or four hundred years?Do they feel any differently about the dura-tion and variety of their existence than wedo?Cosmic time is another thing altogether.

A friend who has wrestled with quantumphysics (apparently no-one really under-stands it) describes the passing of time as “amatter of entropy, the way in all things sim-ply unravel in little discrete fragments oftime; the present does not exist, but past andfuture do and have. The life of any organismis simply an endless string of instants being“scanned” from beginning to end. And theendisentropy, wherebyallnaturalprocessesrun down irrevocably until the universe suf-fers heat death (or perhaps not).”Clear enough? If so, you’re cleverer than

the rest of us.For the present, however, Nature has been

atwork in a decidedly non-entropicway: lastweek’s winter storm really set in with avengeance. The northwesterly is funnelled

through a gap in the moun-tain behind me and in thenight it seemed as if the roofwas about to fly off. The nextnovelty was a flash of light-ning and a thunderclap, al-most simultaneous, theywere that close. Then camethe hail, mercifully smallerthanthoseHighveldgolfballsthat maim cows, kill smalleranimals, pock-mark vehiclesand flatten crops. It still leftsizeable drifts that lingeredonwell intotheday.Ofcourseweneed the rainwater tohelpus through our longer, driersummers, but may we re-quest that it be delivered ina gentler fashion, perhapsspread out a bit as in days of old, please?Been learning about entropy in another

way – older cars also tend to deteriorate andthe bits they need to be kept alive are not

bought off the shelf. Some patience is re-quired, much like in a marriage I think, butthe pleasure still outweighs the pain.– [email protected]

Vir my is daar net tweesoorte museums. Die eensoort ismorsdoodendaar-uit gee ek vinnig pad. Dietweede soort is museumswat lewe.
