According to the school, which is at the cor- ners of Tafelberg and Bokkeveld roads, the decision to curtail the grades offered is in the best interest of foundation and intermediate phase pupils who are exposed to violent sen- ior learners who smoke dagga at school. The school was opened in 2006 to meet the dire need for accommodation in Grades 8 and 9 for pupils in Tafelsig. John Jonkers, a member of the Safe Schools programme and the security volunteer based at Mitchell Heights, says they battle – some- times literally – with knife-wielding senior learners who smoke dagga on the premises. “Lately we have had a lot of cases where pupils are smoking dagga at the school. It is not right for the younger learners to be ex- posed to this,” he says. Principal of Mitchell Heights Primary, Gadija Thebus, says this is in fact one of her biggest concerns. “We are concerned about the safety of learners and the influence the seniors have on those in the foundation and intermediate phase,” she says. People’s Post interviewed the parents of Grade R learners and they had mixed reviews about cutting out Grade 8 and Grade 9 classes. Some say they are happy that they will no longer have to fret over their children being negatively influenced by senior pupils. Jessica Meyer (38) has two sons at the school, one in Grade 1 and another in Grade 6. “It is a good move. The senior pupils get out of hand and there have been incidents where younger learners have gotten hurt. The po- lice have even been called in when pupils get too out of hand,” she says. Meyer, who also serves on the school gov- erning body, confirms that they have had no objections to the proposed curtailing as yet. Johan Mars, who collects his grandson from the school, says offering senior grades is an advantage for parents. Mars says that the school needs to beef up security measures to handle the violent situa- tions which sometimes unfold when senior learners get disruptive. Thebus says the placement of the affected pupils is her main priority. “Most of my Grade 7 learners have received placement. We are monitoring the situation to ensure our learners are enrolled at a high school before the beginning of the new aca- demic year. This is being done to ensure no learner is left out in the cold,” she says. Thebus claims some parents of senior learners are negligent about enrolling their children at a different school. She explains why operating a school with children aged five to 17 is not the ideal situa- tion. “It is horrendous as you are dealing with a vast curriculum. It is also not healthy to have these learners on the same premises. The learners at senior phase level pose a dan- ger to younger learners,” she says. A final decision has been made by the pro- vincial education department, confirms Bronagh Casey, the spokesperson for MEC Donald Grant. “This decision has been coming on for the last two years,” Thebus says. Casey says: “There is a high demand for ac- commodation at primary schools in Mitch- ell’s Plain, therefore we will now be able to make additional space available for more Grade 1s.” The school will be building two new Grade R classes ahead of the new academic year, Thebus adds. Misfits cause grade cut DISADVANTAGE: Johan Mars collects his grandson, Jaden, from the school. WELCOMED: Jessica Meyer welcomes the move and says it is a step in the right direction. CHANGES: Mitchell Heights Primary is most likely to no longer offer Grade 8 and 9 as of next year. The school is awaiting official notification of the cutback.

LAY-BYES GLADLY ACCEPTED

OPEN SATURDAYS8 am -1pm

Dear reader,

Occasions such asChristmas andEid are re-nowned forupholding traditions and customs. On Sunday, South Africans joined 1.5 bil-

lion Muslims around the world in celebratingEid-ul-Fitr, the festival of charity signallingthe end of the holy month of Ramadan. In addition to prayers, spend-

ing time with family and friendsand enjoying traditional Eiddishes such as leg of lamb, breya-ni and trifle, it was a time to cele-brate, unite and give thanks forour many blessings. Also, to forgive.Generosity prevails during

this time, with “Labarang box-es” – equivalent of a Christmasbox – given to parents and chil-dren in the family and communi-ty.When my five siblings and I

were laaities, we would traipseDistrict 6, Drydocks and Walmer Estate onEid, returning home at the end of the daywithR2 – made up of half, one and two cents. We were chuffed with our takings – money

had a lot more value then. You could get three sweets for half cent at

MrGoodman’s, our favourite sweet and comicbook shop in Hanover Street.Today however, with inflation as it is and

thedepreciationof our currency, it is commonfor the children in my family to amass hun-dreds of rands on Eid.But not everything about tradition, as inter-

preted by some families, leaves warm fuzzyfeelings. In the 70s and 80s, childrenwould spend Eid

playing games on granny’s stoep, or gather ina room while the aunts and un-cles sit in the lounge around adecadent tea table. My gran’s house in Raven-

scraig Road, Walmer Estate, would hum with happiness, laughter, chatter – and the in-variable family spat that sig-nalled the endof another “tradi-tional”AbrahamsEid, and timefor everyone to say their per-haps not-so-fond goodbyes.Despite best intent and value

extracted from events at gran’shouse, my siblings and I havealso had a few “too traditional”

Eids that saw among others, a delicate cush-ion being flung, ire at a sibling notorious forvisiting our parents’ house too late and inabil-ity to reach consensus as at whose house toend the day.Perhaps technology holds the answer to al-

tering tradition as our family observes it. OnEid, during visits, most youngsters and adultsspent sufficient quality time with their cell-phones, sending greetings to others and keep-ing contact. It’s more efficient and eco-friend-ly to send electronic greeting cards – and po-tentially less volatile.Another solution may be that we revert to

making things; clothes for ourselves and ourchildren, bake from scratch our pastries andbiscuits as opposed to buying almost every-thing nowadays.Perhaps we aren’t tired enough on Eid, be-

cause we’ve bought the lekker tartlets andsteak pies once traditionally lovinglymade byour mothers and grandmothers.Nice thought in theory, but I prefer buying

my favourite treats, in the same loving waymy mom and gran made them.

LAILA MAJIET

FOR ALMOST 20 years, 21 families havebeen sharing one electricity meter.

The people living in Oppermans Oord inRotary Road, Strandfontein, are occupyingwhat were once chalets owned by the formerTransnet Allied Trade Union (Tatu).

Because the structures were never intend-ed to be used as residential units, there areonly two electricity meters in the area, caus-ing divisions amongst the people living there.

The mood in Oppermans Oord turns souron the third of every month as families areexpected punch in R250 electricity for themonth on that day.

However, some families do not pay, leavingothers in the dark.

The 22 chalets up on the hill next to BadenPowell Drive have only two electricity me-ters, one which has been installed inside thecaretaker’s chalet and another outside thecaretaker’s home.

Tatu, which has since merged with otherunions to form the South African Transportand Allied Workers Union (Satawu), is ex-pected to meet with residents shortly to ad-dress the matter.

The trade union last used the chalets 15years ago and people from all over Cape Town

and South Africa have since made this placetheir home.

No one pays rent.Ruwayda Curnow says her husband and

her were employed as caretakers by Tatu in1992.

She says there were only 10 families livingat the resort when she moved in 20 years ago.

“The other families used to pay R150 renta month to Tatu management. Now I am noteven sure who owns the land as no one comeshere any more,” Curnow says.

This reporter tried to speak to other resi-dents, but without success due to simmeringtension within the community.

According to a City of Cape Town documentinPeople’s Postpossession, it had been agreedupon that once the electricity arrears of al-most R30 000 had been settled, the chaletswould each receive their own electricity box. However this agreement has not yet beenmet.

The R30 000 had been paid.Mario Oostendurp, the chairperson of the

Strandfontein East Ratepayers Association, says he had to be accompanied by police whenhe visited the former resort due to the volatilesituation.

“Mediators cannot go there without police.Meter readers need to be installed in the cha-lets to put an end to the fighting,” says Oost-endurp.

He says the association has informed wardcouncillor Irma Jackson about the matter butno action has yet been taken.People’s Postwas unable to obtain comment

from Jackson at the time of going to print.

BOXES of expired food products havebeen found on the shelves of a local super-market.

Acustomer is demandinganswers after shebought two boxes of expired chicken nuggetsat Shoprite in Town Centre, Mitchell’s Plain.A revolting stench emanated from the re-

cently opened box ofCrumbedChickenTikkaCheezella Bites, a Florida Foods product. The chicken nuggets were covered in

mould and had a distinct green colour.Deidre Horn (37) says she always buys

these chicken bites as it is her eight-year-old

daughter’s favourite, but on returning it tothe store on 12 August, the floor manager re-fused to refund her or accept that expiredgoods were being put on the shelves. The expiry date of the products, one bought

on 3 August and the other on 7 August 2012,was 7 September 2011.People’s Post is in possession of a copy of

the till slipwhich shows that Horn had in factonly purchased the frozen products on 7 Au-gust.She says: “I amconcerned that theyare sell-

ing expired goods. What if my child and I hadactually eaten the nuggets and gotten sick?No one is taking responsibility for the ex-pired goods still being on the shelves. Afterthe incident I went to a Shoprite in the CBDand found the same product with an expirydate well into 2013.”A spokesperson for Shoprite says the su-

permarket chain views the display of prod-ucts past their sell-by dates on its shelves in

a very serious light. “Shoprite is, however, unable to explain the customer’s experienceas all of the other FloridaCheezella Bites cur-rently on the shelf have expiry dates of wellinto 2013,” says the spokesperson. The supermarket say they “adhere to effec-

tive in-store control disciplines that, amongst other things, include a strict stock-rotation policywhereby food products are re-moved from shelves and display cabinets onthe day the sell-by date is reached, and theresponsibility of merchandisers to checktheir various brands on shelf on a regular ba-sis”.FloridaFoodsMD, Jamal Parker, says they

have given the customer a replacement prod-uct and apologised for any inconveniencecaused.“We gave the customer a 3kg replacement

product for the inconvenience caused. We arean approved facility. Our products arechecked before they leave our factory for Sho-prite’s warehouse. We went to the store tocheck the batch they had in their freezer andthat was fine. We also tested our retentionsample and nothing was wrong with that,”Parker says. The Shoprite spokesperson continues: “In

order for a full investigation to take place thesupermarket would need to have the alleged-ly expired product in hand to be able to dothe necessary checks. Unfortunately, on theday that the customer reported this matter tothe store, the customer was unwilling to wait

for the controller on duty, who was dealingwith another customer matter at the time, and left the store with thematter unresolved. As she left with the product in question, andwithout leaving any contact information, itmade it even more difficult for Shoprite tofind answers to explain the incident”Horne says getting a replacement product

or her money back was the least of her con-cerns.“It shouldn’t have happened. The super-

market must ensure that it doesn’t happenagain to an unsuspecting customer.”

COMMUNITY WORKERS haveadvised tenants to know theirrights when a landlord attemptsto evict them.

This comes after a tenant living inWestridgemanaged to halt an illegaleviction.Lynne Phillips, the regional co-or-

dinator of community developmentfromtheprovincial department of lo-cal government, says illegal evic-tions by landlords are very commonin Mitchell’s Plain. She explains what tenants should

be aware of when their landlord at-tempts to evict them.“Irrespective if tenants have

signed a lease agreement, theyshould be given 30 days notice to va-cate the premises and police have toassist if tenants are illegally evicted.“No one can just evict you. Land-

lords can be arrested for trespassingif they put you out of a house you hadbeen renting from them, withouthaving given you 30 days notice.”Elton Johnson (28) was put out on

the streets and left to fend for himselfin the pouring rain last week.He says he had been living at 9 Ap-

ple Street, Westridge, for the last fivemonths until the landlord, AudreyBrand, passed away over two weeksago.Johnson was renting a room from

Brand. He says the landlord’s son had

tried to evict himwithout givinghimamonth’s notice. “After the landlordpassed on, her sonmoved in. She hadan interdict against her son,” heclaims.Police have confirmed that John-

son had opened a case of illegal evic-tion.Mitchell’s Plain police spokesper-

son, Constable Jerome Voegt, saysthe son allegedly acted unlawfully bytrying to evict Johnson.“I was soaking wet after being

locked out of the house. Her sonforcefully took my key from me. Iwent to the police, but they were re-luctant to assist and tried to talk meout of opening a case,” fumes John-son.

He says after hounding police forseveral days they eventually arrivedat the house on Wednesday night.“They gave Audrey’s son two op-tions: he either gives me the key orthey arrest him for illegally evictingme.”Philips further explains some of

the rights which tenants should beaware of to ensure they are notwrongfully evicted. “If there is alease agreement the tenant has fullresponsibility of the house for the pe-riod of the lease. The landlord has toarrangewith the tenants should theywish to make repairs on the proper-ty. Landlords could be arrested fortrespassing if they fail to do so.“A written agreement informing

the tenant of the 30 days noticeshould be signed by both parties be-fore an eviction can take place. It isalso the responsibility of the land-lord and tenant to find alternative ac-commodation for the tenant. If theyare unable to do so, the landlord isrequired to give the tenant a further60 days’ notice,” she adds.Aneighbour, who spoke toPeople’s

Post on condition of anonymity, saysshe had known Audrey for almost 25years. “Audrey was a bubbly personwho had a lot of dignity. Johnsonhelped her in her last days,” shesays.Johnson is now back in the house

and will be allowed to stay until fur-ther notice.

A STRANDFONTEIN family isgrateful no one was injured in arecent fire that gutted the tuckshop on their property.

Aunty B’s tuck shop in DennegeurAvenue, Strandfontein caught alightin the early hours of Friday morn-ing. The fire spread rapidly throughthe shop and garage. No injuries were reported. However, the tuck shop, fruit-and-

veg stall and two cars were de-stroyed in the fire. The shopkeeper – a Bangladeshi

man – was stuck in his room behindthe tuck shop when the fire brokeout, but the family managed to get

him out unscathed.Theo Layne, the spokesperson for

theCity ofCapeTown’sFire andRes-cue Services, says firefighters at-tended to the blaze at around 03.30.He says the fire is believed to have

started as a result of an electricalfault.Zaheer Armien, the son of the

homeowners, says his dad’s Corsabakkie and his brother’s Citroen C2were lost in the fire as it spread fromthe tuck shop to the garage. It is estimated that the damage and

loss of property amounts to R300 000.“The opposite neighbour heard

the crackling sounds of the glassshattering as the fire ripped throughthe shop and alerted us to the fire,”Zaheer says.

He adds that the fire and loss of in-comewill have an impact on his par-ents, as they are both pensioners. His father, Cassiem Armien (71),

says they are alsowithout electricityas their power supply cable had beendamaged during the fire.“We have connected to the next

door neighbour’s electricity meterin the meantime until the City ofCape Town does the necessary re-pairs,” Cassiem explains. His wife, Bahia Armien (73), says

they are grateful for the support anddonations of their neighbours dur-ing this difficult time.“Masjidul Bahr even brought us

food parcels,” she says. The Armien’s have been living in

Strandfontein for 35 years.

The gift of lifeTHIS is National Organ Donor AwarenessMonth. In the face of a dire shortage of donors to

match a growing need, this country is puntedon the South African government website as“a world leader for transplants”.This accolade is not undeserved.On3December 1967,DrChristiaanBarnard

performed the world’s first heart transplantafter the family ofDeniseDarvall donated herheart to Louis Washkansky.Darvall suffered severe brain damage in a

car accident and Washkansky was sufferingof gross heart failure and in desperate needof a transplant. It took a dedicated team nine hours to per-

form the operation.Succumbing to pneumonia, Washkansky

only lived for 18 days after the operation. The theatre where this transplant was per-

formed has been turned into a museum inhonour of these pioneers of medicine, and toDarvall and Washkansky. In a first for the African continent, Durban

will next year host the World TransplantGames.Competitors from some 55 countries are ex-

pected to compete inwhat is the single biggestorgan donor awareness event on the planet. This, in itself, is a celebration of the human

spirit. Their tenacity and strength of charac-ter bear testimony to true grit. The Games should bring together up to

1 500 participants.Since its 1978 creation, the World Trans-

plant Games Federation has sought to createincreased awareness of the need to donate or-gans and to promote the success of organtransplant through sport across the world.Barnard’s skill is now history, but the

shortage of adequate donors is aworrying fac-tor. The first heart transplant was gift to theworld of medicine. The selflessness of organ donors is a gift to

any other human on the face of this earth. That is the first step to being commendable.

There is no higher accolade or honour.

. I am a 59-year-old woman on chronicmedication. I have a weak heart and otherailments. I applied for a grant five timeswithout success. I ask myself why it wasdeclined. I can’t work because I’m tiredmost of the time and I get frequent black-outs. I wish somebody could help.Granny,Lentegeur

. This is absolutely disgusting.Ourpar-ents have to do the “walk around” formon-ies owed to them.

. Regarding the theft of pensions: Nexttime the culprit will use another lot ofcards. The culprit needs to be stopped be-foremore pensioners fall victim. The poorseniors get only one payment a month.

. I’m looking for Abraham de Koker. His sonwants us to get in contactwithhimurgently. Can you please help me to lookfor him? I don’t know his address, but heworked for Mitchell’s Plain police stationmany years ago. He lived in Lentegeur. Please contact me on 083 531 3385 [email protected].

. There is nothing wrong with breast-feeding in public. I do, but I cover mybreast before taking it out. As for havinga routine: do you stick to your eatingtimes, even in an emergency?

. When babies need to feed, they needto feed. They don’t ask when, where orhow. If breastfeeding is done in a decentmanner, why should people get offended? If mothers can’t breastfeed their babies inpublic, then people shouldn’t be allowed toeat in public.

. There is nothing wrong with breast-feeding in public, as long as you cover up.I expressed and bottle-fed my baby in pub-lic, but after a week he refused to drinkfromthebottle. Thenurseat the clinic saidhe was confused with the nipples. So I opt-ed to breastfeed in public if needed.Fatima

. I hope anti-public breastfeeders don’teat in public when hungry – to the pointof fainting. Mothers sometimes get de-layed before the next feed.

Faiza Steyn, the spokesperson for the provin-cial health department, responds:The Western Cape Government Health has

clear channels for patients to use for lodginga formal complaint. We encourage our clients, should they feel

aggrieved with the services they receive, tocontact the facility manager concerned as afirst entry point. That way they can assist usin delivering a quality health service and im-proved patient experience.

I AM disappointed that a leading bank doesnot provide IsiXhosa as a language option atits ATMs in the Western Cape.My comment follows after months of pub-

lic debate around the Draft South AfricanLanguage Users Bill. The Bill, which will betabled before the National Assembly laterthis year, proposes that positive measuresbe implemented to promote previously mar-ginalised languages, such as IsiXhosa, as perArticle 6(2) of the country’s Constitution. And Article 5 of the Constitution of the

Western Cape determines English, Afri-kaans and IsiXhosa as the official languagesof theWestern Cape, while Article 6(3) of thecountry’s Constitution expresses the princi-ple of regional languages. The private sector should be encouraged

to develop language policies which take into

account the language circumstances of localcommunities. It makes business sense to serve one’s cli-

ent in his or her mother tongue or languageof choicewhich in theWesternCapewill pre-dominantly be English, Afrikaans or isiXho-sa.It does notmake sense to provide Zulu and

Tswana as a choice and not IsiXhosa whichis currently the case in some instances.I intend writing to the regional manage-

ment of local banks to make them aware oftheWesternCapeLanguagePolicy and to en-courage them to develop language policieswhich promote respect for the diversity ofthis province and its languages, and in par-ticular isiXhosa.DR IVAN MEYERMinister of Cultural Affairs and Sport

Table tennis crisis talks failTTableable tennistennis crisiscrisis talkstalks failfailLIAM MOSES

THE future of a suspended national tabletennis coach has been left hanging in thebalance after mediated crisis talks withWestern Province Table Tennis failed tosolve a long running dispute.

Greg Naik, a former Western Province,Boland and national table tennis coach wassuspended in July for “bringing the game in-to disrepute” after the provincial body filedcharges against him.

Naik, who is also chairperson and founderof Boundary Table Tennis Club in Bonte-huewel, was subsequently banned from thegame for two years, but insists that the banis illegal and contravenes the WP Table Ten-nis constitution.

He responded by hiring lawyers and ap-

proaching the Western Province Sport Coun-cil (WPSC) and Western Province Depart-ment of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) forhelp (“Keeping mum on table tennis coach”,People’s Post, 14 August).

Last Tuesday, Naik met with Kelvin Smith,vice-chairperson and acting chairperson ofWP Table Tennis; Bennett Bailey, the deputydirector of client and scientific support atDCAS; Dave Roberts, chairperson of theWestern Province Council of Sport, and sev-eral other officials.

Bailey says no solution was found in themeeting because neither party was willing tobudge on their stance. “It’s like a negotiation, there is give and take. But if no-one wants togive and everyone wants to take then we arenot going to move,” says Bailey.

“The club didn’t move, because they wereof the opinion that Mr Naik did nothing

wrong and they need him at the club, becausethey rely heavily on him. The executive com-mittee (of WP Table Tennis) felt that theyneed to carry out the decision of the generalcouncil.”

Bailey says WPSC and DCAS have now dis-engaged themselves from the issue and willplay no further role for the immediate future.

Although no solution or decision wasreached in the meeting, Smith says he is hap-py with the result.

“They looked at our constitution and ourdisciplinary procedures. They looked verycritically at the steps that we followed andthey were happy that we followed all of theprocedures as per the constitution,” saysSmith.

“WP are happy with the meeting and we arevindicated by the comments of DCAS. We fol-lowed procedure to the letter. DCAS has prov-

en that we have followed everything correct-ly. So the ball is now in Mr Naik’s court.”

Naik, however, says the meeting is just thefirst part of an ongoing process.

“After the meeting, WP are spreading therumour that they are upholding the suspen-sion. What I understood was that the SportsCouncil wants call a meeting with me,” saysNaik.

“They said this is just the first part of theprocess. The next part will still happen. Theydidn’t uphold the suspension. They just saidthat we are closing the meeting until furthernotice.”

The former SA coach will now approach theWestern Cape Sport Arbitration Forum, as hewas advised to do at the meeting. UnlikeDCAS and WPSC, the Forum does have theauthority to either overturn or uphold Naik’sban.

talent, it also assists in developing youngCape Town footballers in other ways. Each one of the 16 teams that will compete

in the finals in September will receive train-ing equipment or a cash prize, regardless ofwhere they finish, and all the teams play thesame amount of games. The format of the competition means the

teams play against the strongest competitionavailable locally.“Once you play against the last sixteen

teams you are playing against the best teamsin Cape Town. You obviously have to be a bitbetter, and a bit more organised,” saysKruger. “It gives players the opportunity toplay against teams such as Ajax and Vasco, who they don’t usually get to play.“Here you are going to play against the best

16 teams in the region, so you are alreadyplaying at a higher level compared to playingyour normal LFA game.”This week 96 teams will start their journey

to the finals of the competition, when theyface off in the opening rounds of the tourna-ment.The firstmatcheswere set to takeplaceover

weekends, but waterlogged pitches meantthat the games could not take place.Unlike similar youth tournaments all

teamsmust qualify for the finals of the compe-tition and the participating sides range fromsmall, newly established teams to juniorteams fromprofessional clubs andacademies.

AS the opening rounds of the EngenKnockout Challenge kicks tomorrow, thetournament has already captured the at-tention of talent scouts around the coun-try.

Since its inception in 2003 the popular tour-nament has served as a platform for hundredsof players under the age of 17 to prove theyhave what it takes to progress to the profes-sional ranks of South African football. The current crop of talented Cape Town

youngsters will have their opportunity toprove themselveswhen the tournament finalstake place in September and, according totournament director Gilbert Kruger, theywill be watched by several representativesfrom professional teams. “I don’t want to putpressure on players by giving their names, but if I look at some of the players there seemsto be a nice crop coming through who couldbe noticed by the professional clubs,” saysKruger. “I have already been inundated withrequests from scouts and professional clubswho are asking for accreditation to come tothe tournament, because theyknow this is thearea where they could possibly find players.”The Challenge has already assisted some of

Cape Town and South Africa’s most talentedplayers on theirway to upper echelons of foot-ball. Former Ajax Cape Town and current Su-persport United midfielder George Maluleka,Ajax Amsterdam and Bafana Bafana attackerThulani Serero and Santos players TasleemPaulse and Zairon van Beulen all made a

LIAM MOSES

NEWLY PROMOTED National First Divi-sion (NDF) side Milano United are sweat-ing the outcome of a meeting which willdetermine whether they can play theirhome games at Rooikrans Sports Com-plex.

The Grassy Park-based side have played atthe field since their formation in 1986, butmay now be forced to move away if otherclubs based at field object to it being used forprofessional football.

The club’s officials will meet with repre-sentatives from the other sporting codeswhich are played at the field, such as baseballand cricket, tomorrow to work out a solution.

Nasief Brenner, Milano’s owner, says mov-ing the club away would hurt the team andits passionate supporters.

“We are here for over 20 years; it’s ourhome. I don’t think it would be fair to the com-munity to move us. We are using local playersfrom Grassy Park and Lavender Hill,” saysBrenner.

“Also to take it away from the supporterswould be unfair. The supporters come froma disadvantaged background, so to ask themto travel to Philippi or Wynberg is a burdenon them.”

Milano were promoted after winning theWestern Cape Vodacom League and then fin-ishing second the national promotion play-offs in Polokwane in July.

Brenner adds that the team needs commu-nity support for it to continue its climb up theSouth African football ladder.

“We need to play here for our community.Like with Chippa United, they did great inPhilippi because they were communitybased.

“You are nothing without your commu-nity, just another individual. We are Mi-lano from Grassy Park. Not Milano fromWynberg or Philippi.”

Milano have already received the go-ahead from the league, but are still in con-sultation with the City of Cape Town to useRooikrans. The final decision will be madeif they receive the permission of the otherclubs at Rooikrans.

Should the team stay at in Grassy Park, they will need to upgrade the facility byadding showers and making other minorchanges before the NDF conducts a final in-spection of the field at the end of the month.

Tandeka Gqada, Mayoral Committeemember for Community Services, says theCity is concerned that Milano’s request forexclusive use of the A-field and the hall atRooikrans, every second week, would beunfair to other codes using the facility.

“This restricts the use of the hall by thebroader community for functions and otherrecreational activities. As this is a communityfacility we would be hard-pressed to defend oneclub using this hall and field on an exclusivebasis every second week,” says Gqada.

“Secondly they requested facilities which arecurrently being used as a first aid room anddrug testing cubicle by the baseball and dartscodes, to be converted into a referee’s room. Inaddition to all these requirements they also re-quire a tunnel, which the facility does nothave.”

Brenner says Milano will be forced to moveto the Wynberg Military base, a venue whereother Premier Soccer League and NDF sideshave played in the past, should the other sport-ing codes vote against their stay.

The City has suggested that Milano use eitherPhilippi, Vygiekraal or Athlone stadium fortheir games.
